High Protein Salad

Cheat days.

These words have haunted me for far too long. About eleven years now, if you’re counting.

I used to think that every day had to be a regimented, strict eating day and then only on the chosen day (or days in my case), could I indulge my true cravings. I would wait diligently until Friday night or Saturday night and then I would blow my calorie load (pardon me) on whatever I could get my newly toned hands on. After about ten years of on again off again dieting, crashing, splurging and guilt ridden excess, I think I finally found true balance. There are no cheat days. Never again will I call it those awful words. To cheat means to induce guilt, and we all know I have enough of that. From now on there will only be healthy living and healthy indulgence, for to have all work and no play makes Liz a dull girl. I will eat that beef rib and cornbread side with butter and I will drown it in chocolate porter. Then I’ll work out like I always do and I will feel no guilt. I will have my piece of chocolate cake and some bacon ice cream. People will wonder “how does she stay so skinny?” and they will ask me, as they always do. But I’m always truthful. Work out. Hard. Move your body. Every day. Pay attention to what you eat, don’t finish your kids plates, don’t drink your calories, water is always best.(...)

Yogurt Panna Cotta with Early Grey Grapefruit Jam

I know what you’re thinking. Where are the guilty desserts, the luscious cream filled cakes covered in gooey frosting? Where are the guilt inducing sauced up meat filled dishes of yore? Where has the “guilty” in Guilty Kitchen gone?

Well, it’s still there, somewhere. It comes out every weekend or so when I like to indulge in a little meaty goodness at a good friend’s BBQ restaurant, but that is literally the only place I indulge for the most part. Here and there we have beer tastings with friends paired with many a cheese platter, meats, fresh baked sourdough and veggies and dip but for the most part I’m sticking to my healthy eating.

We try to keep meat eating down to once or twice a week, and again only because I have a big soft spot for BBQ and charcuterie. Everything else I’ll pass over for healthier options. I’m not dissing the meat eating world, this is just what works for me. For some the paleo diet is what works for them and I applaud them for it. I wish I could deal with that much meat. But I love my bread…..and beer. (...)

Brew Dog Rip Tide -Twisted Merciless Stout

Sweet alcohol and cocoa on the nose. Starts sweet and transforms to a dark chocolate coffee taste. Surge of dark chocolate into the back of your throat and nose from this 8% brew.

Rating: 4.25/5

This is not for all but one to not be passed by for loud beer lovers.

Phillips Brewing Co. Hoperation Tripel Cross IPA

A gorgeous balanced blend of citrus hop and Belgian yeasty spice on the nose. Next you are faced with a malty Belgian spiced taste mixed with copious amounts of aromatic hops. Finish is floral yet bitter that lingers on the top of your tongue.

Warm Mushroom, Barley and Kale Salad

For a month now, Adrian and I have been joining many others in a photo challenge. You take a photo a day for the whole month based on a set “theme” for that day and you use the hashtag #janphotoaday, #febphotoaday, etc. It’s been really interesting to see what others think of when the words are “nature” or “something old”. These two photos are not part of the challenge but they are the result of taking your photography to the next level. I feel like every photo I post on my Instagram feed needs to be awesome, impressive and beautiful. (Oh, by the way, check out our Instagram feeds anytime you want. Even if you don’t have an Iphone, the tab above “Instagram Feed” shows both Adrian’s and my own feed.)

Abbaye-Abdij du Val-Dieu – Grand Cru

Wine like nose. Ripe fruits with alcohol. Malty spicey ripe fruits. Finish is sweet malty. Well balanced. Can’t really tell its 10.5%.

Unibroue – Éphémère Black Current

Another yummy offering from Unibroue. Grape and currents rule the nose with a light spice. Tart & carbonated with light malty taste. Finish is tart but pleasant with a slight spice. Carbonation wanes as it sits out.

Endive, Fennel and Barley Salad

Winter and salads don’t usually invoke a shared memory. When I think back to foods we used to eat in winter during my childhood, there were mostly big dishes filled with hearty stews, soups, casseroles and meat with grains. There was Salisbury steak, pork chops cooked in rice in a dutch oven with green peppers (don’t even get me started on that one), lasagna, beef dips from leftover roasts, chicken legs, pork chops in breading and cooked in swimming pools of oil over an ancient electric frying pan. These were comfort foods of the highest order. My mother, sister and I and our love of comfort foods goes back so far it can’t be traced. My mother brought it to us and her mother to her and so it goes, back through time. (...)

It’s funny how when the weather turns crummy, most people turn to heavy stews soups and casseroles. They bust out the slow cooker and cook up a big old hunk of beef with a side of potatoes and gravy. But for me, when winter comes, I long for the easy food. Quickly tossed together salads with winter citrus based dressing so I can get back under the blanket on the couch with my lover and our little ones. There’s nothing in this world of food I love more than a big, juicy, crispy salad covered in vegetables, cheese and avocado. Add in some seriously addictive candied nuts and I am in food heaven.

Have I ever mentioned that I lived on salads for practically five years. From high school to marriage I ate nothing but salads. Salads were my comfort food for I had exhausted my allowance of real comfort foods during the first 18 years of my life. Here I was, 20 years old, single, having lost 65 pounds and I was determined to never see that side of the scale again. So salads were my friend. I learned to make a million different salads. I became known for them. Elaine’s “Big Salad” from Seinfeld? She ain’t got nothing on me and my notorious salads.(...)

It all starts with a plan. At first, it’s in your head and you only catch glimpses of it as you sleepily roll around in your warm bed. But then you catch it by tail the with the tips of your fingers, and it begins to come to life. You grasp that idea with the strength of 900 lb. gorilla and you don’t let it go for any reason. You think about it constantly, you eat it, breathe it, dream it. You get up in the middle of the night, keep pads of paper with you wherever you go, manically type on your iPhone in the middle of the aisles of your favourite grocery store. It takes you over from the inside and then finally, it begins to take shape. Physical plans and blueprints get printed, rolled tightly to unfurl at the job site. Contractors are hired, fired, yelled at, throttled, threatened and ultimately become a piece of the background as the maddening pace of a restaurant’s construction takes foot.

Roasted Cauliflower Salad

It’s January.

For some of us Canadians, that means we are just heading into the depths of winter and all it’s depressing greyness, cold and damp dark days. Fortunately for me, my parents happened to settle on the west coast, particularly, Vancouver Island. Even better than that, I had the fortuitous idea to move to the capitol after high school and settle in the warmest climate in Canada. My garden is budding already, there are flowers shooting up from under all the trees and the house sparrows have returned to the birdhouse outside my kitchen window to create their nest and have 16,986 chicks before the next winter settles in.

January also means that people are into their annual health kicks. Gym passes, yoga mats, weight sets and ab machines have been bought, grocery lists have been decluttered of “chips, chocolate bars, cheezies and instant noodles”. Deals and pacts have been made with ourselves to be different this year.(...)
