In this post we thought we’d try something a little different. Most of our posts are on playing technique/theory or cool videos of songs or tracks we really dig. This time, we wanted to share a couple vids with you, but instead of music we want to share some tips that we feel could be helpful for most guitar players. These videos are from a cool guy we found on YouTube who goes by Gearmanndude (check out his channel)!

What exactly is a guitar jam track?

Is there a difference between a guitar backing track and a guitar jam track?

Since we’ve run across several people wondering about these things, we thought we’d devote a post to explaining the differences between a backing track and a jam track and what you can get from each of them. Hopefully this will clarify any questions you have and also get you excited about the possibilities of jamming with both!

To answer the first question, a guitar jam track is a track (made up of 1 or more chord progression sections in any key(s)) created specifically without a lead guitar part (sometimes without any guitar whatsoever) for guitar players to “jam” over. It could almost be described as having a band backing you up. Regardless what instruments are used on the track (could be drums, bass, keyboards, etc), the idea is that there is plenty of room in the upper register of the track for a lead guitar player to add their own improvisation over top and respond to the track’s melodies.

On the other hand, a backing track is a specific song without the lead guitar parts (it also may or may not have vocals). These are great for anyone looking to practice playing well-known songs without needing a full band. For example, if you are looking to practice playing the guitar parts for Pink Floyd’s “Comfortable Numb”, you would want to look for this guitar backing track.

So with this in mind, the main difference between the 2 is that with guitar jam tracks you are looking to practice your improvisation/lead playing in different rhythmic/melodic contexts and keys, whereas with a backing track, you are looking to practice playing/jamming over a particular song.

Hopefully this gives you a clearer idea of the difference between these tracks and helps you figure out which ones you are looking for. We can tell you that there is tremendous benefits to playing with either type of tracks, it just depends on where you are trying to go with your playing. Ultimately, you may even want to make use of both of these tracks in your jamming/practice routine!

Our focus is on helping you find your own voice as an improvisational guitar player and helping you improve your overall playing abilities…No matter what style you like or what skill level you are at. We are considering offering some backing tracks in the future, but as of right now, we do not have any.

If you are only looking to learn/cover other peoples’ songs, our lessons will still help you, but you are probably looking for backing tracks to play over as opposed to jam tracks. There are lots of great resources online for these types of tracks.

For anyone interested in Greg Howe, he is an American guitarist and collaborative musician that has released 9 studio albums as well as worked on many other projects with a huge variety of artists. What many people wouldn’t guess from listening to this jazz/fusion jam is that Greg is also a very talented rock guitarist. His earlier work with his Van Halen-inspired group Howe II is really cool and shows off his more aggressive hard rock side.
