In this free video guitar lesson you will learn an extremely simple way to improvise with modes without having to know anything but basic pentatonic scales.

The key to modal target notes is to know what note in each individual mode gives it it’s unique sound and then add that note to a familiar pentatonic shape as a target note.

After watching this video you will see just how simple this method can be. You will be freely soloing with modes all over the fretboard in no time without having to learn different scale forms for each mode.

In this video I will describe the process of why the target notes work the way they do and demonstrate how to create modal improvisations with this extremely simple method.

Be sure to download the TAB PDF for this lesson below since it has all the diagrams you will need to follow along with the video more easily.

Hope you guys enjoy this method. Cheers! Carl..

In this 2nd free video guitar lesson on visualizing arpeggios we will take a look at the arpeggios surround the scale shapes built from the 2nd and 3rd notes in a major scale.

Knowing your 3-notes per string major scales is obviously essential in order to do these arpeggios studies correct so make sure you have those down before attempting this lesson series.

This arpeggios concept will enable you to truly play all the triads that work within a key instead of just focusing on the tonic triad of a given key as most players do.

Be sure to grab the free TAB PDF for this video lesson below. It is 4 pages total.

I hope by the time you finish this second video guitar lesson of the series you can see the benefits of this kind of study.

In this free video guitar lesson we will begin our study of arpeggios and how they can be visualized around the familiar 3 notes per string scale forms.

Within this video I will demonstrate ALL of the triad arpeggios in the key of G major while always playing a G major scale shape built from the root note between them in order for you to learn to visualize them together.

Arpeggios are extremely important improvisation tools and should be mastered all over the fretboard.

Now before anyone sends me an ugly email screaming that there are 15 major keys just understand that I didn’t include any enharmonic keys. So if we go through all 12 major keys without enharmonic repeats we will have the 12 you will see here in this video.

I am playing a ii-V-I chord progression twice in every key switching from key to key using the circle of fourths. You can just watch the screen to know what the current key and chords are or you can download the TAB PDF for this backing track below.

This free video guitar lesson will introduce you to the incredible sound of exotic scales on the guitar.

You can hear this type of playing in players from Marty Friedman and Jason Becker to many jazz guitar greats.

In this video guitar lesson I will show you 5 different scales that comes from Japan. These exotic sounding scales can sound very unique and beautiful when used in the proper context. You will also find many of them contain quite a bit of dissonance which helps shake things up a bit with your creativity and sense of melody.

All of these Japanese scales are a subset of the pentatonic scale. They all contain only 5 tones each. It is important for you to create your won pentatonic scale shapes using the scale formulas for any of the scales that you like the sound of. The TAB PDF that comes with this lesson will have a complete scale formula breakdown for each scale. Grab the TAB PDF below.

Exotic Scales Pt.1 TAB PDF Download

You can even use some of your familiar two notes per string pentatonic licks using these scales instead to REALLY give your improvisations a quick boost.

Enjoy! Carl..

Here is a cool video backing track that you can use to practice your Lydian improvisation skills using the keys of B and E Lydian.

I tried to mix it up dynamically a little bit giving you the opportunity to solo over both high energy and more subdued Lydian tonalities.

While listening and playing along to the video be sure to watch the screen for the key changes. It will become pretty obvious to you though after a couple of listenings since we are only working with 2 different keys here.

Hope you guys enjoy this!! Cheers! Carl..

One of the most essential aspects of playing guitar is keeping your hands in shape and ready to play. Not only do proper warm-ups loosen up your hands and make is possible for you to perform at a high level, but they will also help prevent repetitive motion injuries that are so common with musicians.

These stretching exercises work well in tandem with the previous stretching exercises that we have already done here at GuitarLessons365.

Those other exercises were made to be done without a guitar in your hands and by the responses I have received since that video went live, it is now being used by everyone from guitarists, pianists, typists and even in rehab programs for US soldiers injured in combat.

These new stretching routines are designed exclusively for guitarists. Through these 7 simple exercises you will work on the flexibility between every adjacent finger on your fretting hand.

Take your time to let your stretching capabilities develop. I suggest doing the first stretching video first, then follow it with this one with a guitar in your hands. Listen closely to the instructions as well, you don’t need to start out doing everything the same way I am in the video.

Download the TAB PDF for this lesson below.

Have fun, and please remember not to push it too far in the beginning. Everybody’s hands are different and some will naturally be able to stretch further than others.

Cheers! Carl..

In this free video guitar lesson we will take a look at Eric Johnson’s exciting use of pedal tones in his solo playing.

Eric Johnson usually employs hybrid picking to accocmplish a fast fluid pedal tone sound that fluently transitions between many different strings. The hybrid picking pattern that he uses is actually quite simple and straightforward and shouldn’t present much of a problem to get under your fingers.

Try and keep the note separation clean because letting two notes rings together will create a pretty dissonant and ugly sound, especially when using a high gain setting.
