A month ago, some ne'er-do-well made off with B.B. King’s Lucille.
It was his 15th Lucille, actually. The 15th in the line of his 16 Gibson electric guitars. The instrument is legendarily named for a woman over whom two men were fighting during one of King’s early shows, in 1949, in a blues club in Twist, Ark. According to B.B. King lore, the two men tumbled across the floor of the club, knocking over a barrel half-filled with kerosene and setting the venue ablaze.
King ran free, but scrambled back inside to retrieve his Gibson guitar, which he summarily named “Lucille,” to remind him not to do anything so foolish again as to return to a burning nightclub to fetch a guitar. Thus, every guitar King has played onstage since has been named Lucille. And this summer, No. 15 vanished from his home in Spanish Oaks.
“Oh yeah, somebody stole one of them, and I just got it back about a month ago. Someone stole one of my Lucille guitars, can you believe that?” King said during a phone interview last week, the purpose for which was to give notice that he will perform at how eponymous nightclub at Mirage on Monday and Tuesday night, tickets are $50 for standing-general admission, and $75, $100, $125 and $150 for seated, call (702) 242-5464 or go to www.bbkingclubs for information.
The guitar was returned to King about a month ago when he received a call from someone who had seen the guitar hanging in a Las Vegas pawn shop. King can’t recall which pawn shop, but is certain the instrument was somehow sneaked from his home.
“This went in a round-about route – the guy that stole it let a guy that he knew pawn it, so the pawn shop guy didn’t know who he was or what was going on,” the 84-year-old King said. “But to be honest, they couldn’t miss it! It has my name on it, I mean made in it, from the factory. So, anybody who saw it would have to know it’s mine.”
So the lesson here is, don’t go buying a “B.B. King Lucille” guitar from a pawn shop.
With all 16 Lucilles returned to their proper owner, the 84-year-old King – who has recently recorded a new CD with longtime friend and fellow blues legend Buddy Guy -- provided a few ruminations as he prepped for a show at Hollywood Bowl on Wednesday night:
• “I’ve never been bothered by the heat in Vegas. I’m from Mississippi. I’m used to the heat.”
• “I’ve got a bad leg, which started when I was about 12 years old. The older I get, the worse it get. I sit down a lot more when I perform, and I don’t walk as much as I used to, but otherwise I feel fine. I still have a good time. Oh, do I.”
• “I used to have a bad habit of gambling. I liked keno and blackjack, those were my games. But when I moved (to Las Vegas), it cut my habit. I go home now. The way I tell my friends, when you’re single, you’re always looking for girls. But when you get married, you don’t need to look for girls anymore. With me, before I moved there, whenever you’d go to a casino, you’d gamble and would never go to bed. Just stay at the tables. That’s the way I was then, but now, I live there and it’s like being married. I don’t need it.”
• “About ’68 was when I got divorced. I haven’t really been close (to remarrying) since. I feel that one foot’s already in the grave, so why should I let some lady put the other in (laughs)?”
• “(Of a “farewell” tour he headlined in Europe four years ago) I never called it a farewell tour. I was over there this year, in fact, in Europe and South America. But I never said that. Never. But promoters like to make money, and if they think they can put something out that will make money, they’ll do it.”
• “I don’t have anything to do with the business side of the club. Our CEO is a young man named Tommy Peters. But they do always respect my decisions on the food. I wish they’d stop doing that, because I’m fat enough already (laughs). I’m cutting back my menu. I rarely eat meat now. I’ve lost 15-20 pounds, I think, but I like food and I like good food and the clubs do have good food.”
• “I don’t smoke now. I used to, but I haven’t smoked in 40 years. I don’t care for smoke now. When the Surgeon General said smoking was hazardous to your health, I stopped smoking. Smoking got in the way of performing. So what would I rather do: Smoke or perform? I’d rather perform. It wasn’t a hard decision.”
• “Musically, I’ve never been – who’s the great pianist who lived in Las Vegas? Liberace. I’ve never been one of them, who knows about the, shall we say, the sound of a room and all of that. He understood the acoustics and studied that. Now, there have been some places I’d rather not go back to, because of the sound, but I didn’t know exactly what was causing the sound to be what it was. … But we’re going to play the Hollywood Bowl tonight. I think it’s a pretty nice place (laughs).”
• “I don’t think most people in Vegas know that I live there. I never do hear anything about B.B. King living in Las Vegas. I see where a lot of other people live in Las Vegas. I check the paper, I read about who lives there. But I see where people talk about who they see here, but I’ve only seen that about myself a couple of times in 30 years.”
• “(When told Smokey Robinson also has a home in Vegas) I didn’t know he lived in Las Vegas! Yeah, he’s a great guy. He’s a good businessman. And Jackson, old-man (Joe) Jackson, he lives there too. I know that.”
• “(When told the economy is causing some serious blues) Well, I think you’re on your own (laughs). I can’t help you much there, because it’s giving me the blues, too.”

iPads Are Outselling Macs, Analyst Says

One analysts forecast shows that iPads are flying off retail shelves almost twice as fast as Macs at a nearly 2-to-1 ratio.

The data collected by Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital Markets estimates that Apple sells in excess of 200,000 iPads each week in the U.S., as opposed to the estimated 110,000 Macs it sells each week.

These stats would place the iPad just below the iPhone 3GS in terms of sales; Apple’s latest iPhone has been selling around 246,000 units per week in Q1 2010.

In a note to investors yesterday, Abramsky wrote that retail inventories right now “show widespread iPad stockouts at Apple retail stores and Best Buy.” He predicts the company will sell around eight million iPads this year.

With the passing of Les Paul, Rock ‘n Roll’s legend and creator of the Les Paul brand of Gibson guitars, I want to share the colorful side of Paul’s famous guitars.

We have a well kept secret here in Seattle, a Gibson Guitar studio, tucked away in the Pioneer Square neighborhood, south of downtown. The studio is generally not open to the public, however I got to take a tour a few months ago, during a Thursday art walk.

The walls are filled with colourful guitars, pictures of famous bands, musicians and paintings. While chatting with some of the artists, I crossed paths with the PR Manager, who showed me a fabulous magazine, showcasing the famous Les Paul Guitars as public art in Austin and London. Here are some of my favourite guitars.

Gibson Guitars Plant Is Raided

The chief executive of the Gibson Guitar company will take a leave of absence from an environmental group after a federal raid on the company’s factory in Nashville, The Tennessean reported. On Tuesday, The Tennessean reported, agents of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service served a search warrant on company officials at a Gibson manufacturing plant where its acoustic and electric guitars are made. The agents did not say what they were searching for or if anything was removed from the plant. But some hardwoods used in making premium guitars, like rosewood from the rain forests of Madagascar and Brazil, have recently been banned under a federal law called the Lacey Act because of environmental concerns. In a statement to The Tennessean, Gibson said that it was “fully cooperating with agents of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service as it pertains to an issue with harvested wood.” The Rainforest Alliance, a conservation group, said the Gibson chief executive, Henry Juszkiewicz, would not rejoin its board until the federal investigation ends.

I am a complete guitar nerd, and love scoping out what axes bands left on stage. The more ridiculous and aggressive, the better. This is metal, after all. Below are my 10 picks for the most metal guitars ever made. I employed one rule: all guitars had to have three-dimensional appeal. They couldn't just be normal guitars with fancy paint jobs. You'll quickly see what I mean by three-dimensional.

Ikon Customs Slime Guitar - Trey Azagthoth Model

Houston-based Ikon Customs made this one-of-a-kind guitar as a tribute to Morbid Angel's Trey Azagthoth. It accurately captures the slimy neon green aesthetics of the Domination album. Carved into the top of this Ibanez Universe are the faces from the Altars of Madness cover. Sick!

KxK Karl Sanders signature WarriorV

KxK Guitars, another custom shop, made this radical design for Nile's Karl Sanders. It's futuristic, like Egypt via Stargate. The WarriorV name is apt, as the headstock is rather spear-like. See Sanders wield it here and here. Also, check out its various options, like different woods, ankh inlays, and a mind-blowing double-neck (here and here).

Ibanez SHRG1Z - HR Giger Limited Edition

The SHRG1Z is Ibanez' second collaboration with HR Giger, creator of Alien and pal of compatriot Tom G. Warrior. The first guitar collaboration was more along the lines of "fancy paint job." This one has detailed engraving in the body, which this time is the super-sexy Ibanez S shape. I love the "barbed wire" inlay snaking through the fingerboard. Emerald Alien

Speaking of aliens, here is the Alien by Emerald Guitars, an Irish custom shop. Above is the super-sexy back of the guitar. You can see its front here. I learned about this guitar (and several others here) through the fantastic Guitar Noize blog. Check out also this post about another Emerald Guitar called the Bahamut, which is even crazier. The design is a dragon with frickin' lasers on its head.

Amfisound Routa - Arctic Kelo finish

This guitar, by Finnish guitar makers Amfisound, screams "pagan metal." Truly, it is worthy of serenading Valhalla. A blacksmith forges the metallic parts, and the overall finish takes eight months to complete. You can see more pictures and read about it here.

Amfisound Lopashnikov 2008

Amfisound also made this custom baritone guitar for Sami Lopakka (Sentenced, KYCK). Its body comes from a replica of a Kalashnikov AK-47. This beauty has neckthrough construction, an Earvana nut, locking tuners, and a single EMG81 pickup. Talk about machine-gun riffing! See more pictures and read about it here.

Johnson AK87/91

Speaking of gun guitars, here is an absurd one by Johnson Guitars. It is one of three machine gun designs; see the other two here. Johnson makes all sorts of strange guitars, including fighter plane and Egyptian shapes. Maybe Karl Sanders should look into the latter.

ESP Armor Custom

The next three guitars come from the lunatics at ESP's Custom Shop. It must be a nice job to turn people's deranged ideas into reality. (See, for example, the least metal guitar ever.) The Armor Custom guitar screams "power metal." You can see a nice photo of it here.

They just want to learn to play guitar to play at camp fires and impress their friends or family with their guitar playing skills. LEARN TO PLAY THE 'BLUES'

I’ve just finished looking at Griff Hamlin's latest
guitar package, Playing Through The Blues - A Guide For The
Lead Guitar Player. Obviously I see a lot of products
either because I'm looking for something specific, or
because someone wants me to promote their product.

Most of the time I'm less than impressed, but this
learn to play guitar product has me quite excited because it is so different
from anything I have seen in a long time. That is why
I have taken the time to sit and type a letter to all
the people I know want to learn to play the blues on guitar, and tell you all about it.

Learning the blues on guitar can be a frustrating task. It seems
so simple, but only a handful of people seem to know
the trick to really making it sound great. Griff and
his team have put together what I believe is a really
thorough, step-by-step method to learn to play the blues on guitar that has actually been
tested and proven on his own guitar students over the
past several years.

The main book provides all of the guitar scales, techniques,
theory, and guitar tricks that you'll need. It follows a
simple and logical progression. Each chapter builds on
the one before it. At the end of each chapter, you'll
be told exactly what you need to be able to do on your guitar before
moving on to the next chapter. You can't fail to learn guitar with this.

The best part, however, is the guitar audio examples and jam
tracks. Every audio example comes with a full speed
and slow speed version, so you can play along easily on your guitar
at first, and pick up the pace as you get better.

There's also 4 complete guitar solos that really sound like
they are from your favourite blues guitar songs. You could
memorize them and totally use them at your next blues guitar
jam or gig. They demonstrate all of the guitar techniques
throughout the book, and give a very good "real world"
example of the techniques and approach.

Also, there are 6 jam tracks that come with the
package, so once you get going you can just play your guitar
along with the band. And the tracks are really good
quality, just like you're jamming with a real band.
It's a lot of fun.

As a bonus Griff has included an excellent book full
of turnaround and ending guitar licks. Some of them are
pretty straight forward blues, but a couple of them
are real head-turners.

As you can tell, I'm really impressed with this learn to play the blues guitar
package as a whole. The testimonials on the website

out, tested, and put together learn guitar system.

LES PAUL-'Father of the Electric Guitar'

Les Paul, one of the most revered guitarists in history and the father of the electric guitar, passed away on August 12th 2009 at the age of 94. Paul’s manager confirmed to Rolling Stone that cause of death was respiratory failure, and a statement from Gibson indicates Paul was suffering from severe pneumonia and died at a hospital in White Plains, New York.
Les Paul, known as the "Father of the Electric Guitar," will be honoured at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's annual American Music Masters series.

Paul is a rock 'n' roll da Vinci, part artist, part inventor, and at age 93 was still performing weekly at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City.

Paul recalled that the first time he heard a guitar on his mother's radio he knew he had to have one. At the age of 13, he was performing semi-professionally as a country-music guitarist.

He built a solid-body electric guitar in 1941 — an invention born from his frustration that audiences were unable to hear him play.

Paul says he remembers the moment when inspiration hit. He was playing at a barbecue stand somewhere, when a man told him his guitar wasn't loud enough.

It took Paul 10 years to sell the Gibson guitar company on the concept.

"They thought it was a crazy idea to make a guitar come through an amplifier," he said.

In 1952, Gibson introduced the Les Paul model, which became the instrument of choice for musicians such as Duane Allman and Jimmy Page and many other famous guitarists.

"We now could be king because you could turn the level up and you could be heard and you could play things that you could never have played acoustically," Paul said.

Paul's other innovations include recording techniques like close miking, echo delay, overdubbing and multi tracking. He also made his mark as a jazz-pop musician, recording hits like "How High the Moon" with his second wife, singer Mary Ford.

1957 'LES PAUL'

Paul was inducted into the early influence category of the Rock Hall in 1988.

He said he still tinkers with new ideas and is busy designing four new amplifiers and two new guitars for Gibson, including a model that beginners can afford but still fall in love with.

"Most of the people that I know that have a guitar love that guitar like they do their wife," he said.

Paul will perform at a tribute concert Nov. 15 that caps the American Music Masters series. He will be joined by a legion of guitar virtuosos, including Slash, Duane Eddy, Billy Gibbons and the Ventures. Play a Les Paul Click Here!
