Dallas Resident Wins GCP's Volunteer Recognition Contest

Dallas area resident Nina Charles was painting the face of a young girl one weekend while volunteering to paint faces at a local charity event with Rainbow Day, a local child development organization. As Nina used her paintbrush to create a colorful creation on a young girl’s face, they began to discuss her interests and school experience.

“She proceeded to tell me that Obama was the 44th president,” Nina said as she described the scenario, “and I said ‘did you know that YOU could be president one day?’"

With an astonished look on her face, the child replied stating that she never thought of being president as a possibility for her life. “She gave me the most heartfelt smile as if I just instilled a deep belief in her heart.”

Moments like this, Nina said, are what motivate her donate her time to various organizations in the Dallas area both independently and through one of her company employee volunteer initiatives, Citigroup’s Global Community Day.

“Those are the experiences I want to share with others and hopefully it touches someone or many to want to do the same,” she said.

These extensive volunteer experiences, which consist of long-term volunteer commitments to food service organizations and health-related fundraisers, are the reasons she was chosen to receive the Volunteer Recognition Award from Gulf Coast Philanthropy. Nina’s prize included an $100 Amazon.com gift card and $50 donated to the charity of her choice, which she elected to contribute to the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB). Applicants for the award were asked to respond to two questions detailing their volunteer efforts in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and/or Florida.

The active community volunteer said she learned about the organization's work through her employer's corporate employee volunteer program.

“Every year, Citigroup holds Global Community Day to which they partner with various charities, have employees sign up to volunteer and donate to each organization,” she said. “Over a year ago a co-worker asked me to accompany them for Global Community Day at the North Texas Food Bank.”

That experience, combined with her own personal research on her community most pressing needs, solidified her commitment to volunteering with the North Houston Food Bank and Meals on Wheels.

“It was an eye opener,” she said. “Before then, I hadn’t realized the hunger crisis that was going on in the community and how many children went without meals each day.”

She now alternates volunteering twice monthly for each organization, and has adhered to her commitment for more than a year. In addition to her focus on ensuring families have nutritious meals, Nina supports the annual fundraising efforts for Susan G Komen Race for the Cure and March of Dimes.

Nina shares the wealth of her experiences by recruiting friends and young people in her community to volunteer their time as well. “It warms my heart when I receive messages about people who notice what I am doing and want to join in or want more information on the organizations, especially the youth,” she said.

Nina emphasized the invaluable sense of purpose and impact one can have simply by contributing one of life’s most precious resources: time.

“If all of us committed a minimum of our time to helping out others I truly believe it would make a huge difference across the world,” she said. “There is a great need for volunteers and volunteering helps you to see your life in different ways.”

Gulf Coast Philanthropy Announces Volunteer Recognition Contest

In recognition of National Volunteer Week, which is April 15 to 21, the Gulf Coast Philanthropy team is pleased to announce a volunteer recognition contest.

The intent of the contest is to highlight regional community members who volunteer extensively as independent citizens or through corporate volunteer engagement programs.

A five-member selection committee will review all applications and determine a winner during National Volunteer Week. The winner will be announced on April 21st on Gulf Coast Philanthropy. In addition to other eligibility criteria, applicants must have engaged in efforts over the past 12 months or more that benefits one of the following states: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama or Florida. A panel of judges will review all applications and notify the winner of their status by April 21st.

The winner will receive a $100 Amazon.com gift card and $50 to the charity of their choice. These prizes have been generously donated by the Detroit-based Kaleidoscope Consulting LLC.

Capital One Bank Supports Economic Development in Houston Through Small Business Program

Capital One Bank is embarking upon the third year of its “Getting Down to Business” Program in Houston, which offers an opportunity for qualified small businesses to grow by increasing business knowledge, networking with industry experts and lenders, and earning a matched savings reward.

Dandy Candy LLC Founders Gina Williams and Goya Qualls graduated from program last year and were the winners of the business plan competition. The company uses a new and patented technology to reproduce any image or message on the surface of delicious chocolate that can be packaged for various occasions.

Co-Founder Goya Qualls credits the program’s mentorship component with helping her to more effectively reach the company’s target market. “Prior to Capital One, we spent money in all the wrong places trying to get our product in front of people,” she said.

Goya’s business partner Gina Williams said she knew they needed to change their business development strategy, and felt it was divine intervention that they received an e-mail about the program. “When the chance came to participate in the GDTB Program, we jumped at the opportunity,” Gina said.

In alliance with several partners, including SCORE, Money Management International, Accion Texas, Capital One’s program provides small business owners with networking opportunities as well. The program consists of 15 evening education sessions, and participants are required to attend each session, develop a business plan with guidance from an assigned mentor, and meet other program requirements.

Ann Guliex, President of All-N-One Services staffing firm and 2011 program graduate, said the credit counseling aspect the program was essential helping her position her business for long-term growth and success.

“The credit reports from Money Management at the beginning and end of the program was an excellent source of information to fully understand what was needed to improve credit ratings and scores,” she said.

Ann also emphasized the need for participants to remain consistent to reap the benefit of the “Getting Down to Business” Program.

“Be totally committed to the program for the 7 or 8 months and you will leave the program with a better understanding on what direction to take your business and how build and grow,” she said. “You get out of the program what you put in.”

All qualified businesses will be contacted for an interview. Due to the high level of interest, a panel of judges will help select 15 applicants.

UNICEF touts having the largest volunteer mobilization effort for the U.S. We are less than 30 days away from National Volunteer Week (April 15-April 21, 2012) and it makes sense to think about how organizations can engage volunteers for National Volunteer Week and beyond.

Effectively recruiting and engaging volunteers can be a sustainable way for nonprofits to reduce organizational costs, publicize the organization, its mission and activities and engage the community. The most successful volunteer programs use multiple avenues to promote the opportunities available and to encourage initial and on-going participation.

Getting Volunteers
Publicity: Get the word out about the volunteer opportunities available and how to apply using the organization’s web site, blog and/or newsletters. Feature active volunteers in the newsletter and on the web site and always include instructions about how to volunteer.

Talent Scouts: Empower the current volunteers to recruit their colleagues and friends.

Volunteer Job Fair: Set up a Volunteer Job Fair or table at your next event where interested parties can sign-up to be volunteers in the future. Current volunteers should be on hand to answer questions and serve as ambassadors and champions for your organization and its volunteer opportunities.

Retaining Volunteers
Set Them up for Success: Give volunteers tasks in which they will be successful. Give volunteers all resources necessary to perform well.

Show Appreciation: Thanks and recognition are critical factors in motivating and retaining volunteers. There has never been a volunteer who has been thanked too often!
• Volunteer Recognition Banquets can be a powerful tool to recognize volunteers among peers and may help with ongoing volunteer recruitment
• Learn what motivates each volunteer and make your recognition appropriate to what he or she thinks is important
• Thank volunteers genuinely and appropriately
• Assess volunteers and promote volunteers to other roles that take better advantage of their talents

Show They’re Valued: Make sure the volunteers are doing work that is meaningful to them and the community. Show volunteers that you respect and welcome their feedback and opinion while planning and evaluating a process or project.

When volunteer recruitment efforts are thoughtful and deliberate, volunteers have meaningful work to do, and they receive appropriate orientation and training, are well supervised and receive feedback and are solicited for feedback and are recognized for their efforts, the volunteer experience will be satisfying enough that they will want to continue to be engaged with the organization for which they have volunteered.

Texas Restaurants Partner with UNICEF to Provide Safe, Clean Drinking Water to Children Around the World

It is said that everything is bigger in Texas, and this includes the immense philanthropic spirit of businesses throughout the Lone Star State. This year UNICEF – the United Nation’s Fund for Children – selected Houston as one of only five enhanced markets to implement its award-winning Tap Project. The result: several volunteers throughout the entire state have stepped up to register restaurants for this signature campaign to raise funds that will be used to support the UNICEF Tap Project.

“This project is an easy and efficient way for these businesses to help make a difference,” said Beaumont-based volunteer Candace Carver.

She said the Tap Project’s focus on water access and safety hits close to home for her. “In Southeast Texas, specifically, we know what hardships can be and we should know by now not to take our resources for granted.”

Texas joins thousands of restaurants, dining patrons, students and corporations, community, celebrity and government supporters nationwide. During World Water Week, which is March 19 to 25, these restaurants will participate in the UNICEF Tap Project, which is an annual nationwide campaign to provide clean water to children around the world. Patrons of participating restaurants are invited to donate $1 or more for the tap water they usually enjoy for free. The water programs supported by these fundraising efforts aim to reduce the number of children at risk of waterborne illnesses; the second highest cause of preventable childhood deaths globally – killing more than 4,100 children every day.

The list of participating restaurants in Houston and throughout the state will be featured on the official campaign website for public viewing, as well as receive coverage from a nationwide marketing campaign that includes strategic partners like online dining sites ZAGAT, OpenTable, SeamlessWeb, and Yelp.

Native Houstonian Miko Tsubai is volunteering to recruit and register restaurants in Houston, and said this campaign will allow the community to gain a higher level of recognition for the city.“We are not often counted among the upper echelon of U.S. cities,” she said.

“This is the first time that Houston gets to be a major city for the Tap Project. Local restaurants that participate can take pride in the fact that they are participating in such a momentous event, and camaraderie will be created among the staff because they will feel like they are doing something great together.”

The concept of the Tap Project is basic and compelling: “When You Take Water, Give Water.”

Since its inception in 2007, the UNICEF Tap Project has raised more than $3 million in the United States and has provided clean water to children all around the world. UNICEF works in more than 100 countries to improve access to safe water and sanitation in schools and communities, and to promote safe hygiene practices. Over the past 16 years, more than a billion people have gained access to improved drinking water and sanitation facilities thanks to the efforts of UNICEF and its partners.

In 2011 alone, nearly 700 restaurants and more than 2,200 volunteers from all 50 states participated in the national campaign, making it the largest volunteer mobilization effort for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. Funds raised through the 2012 UNICEF Tap Project will provide children with clean drinking water in Viet Nam, Togo, Mauritania and Cameroon.

For volunteers like Miko, the ability to illustrate that everyday citizens can support global philanthropic efforts is what motivates her to volunteer for this campaign.

“The Tap Project is a way to bring people from all walks of life together to enjoy a good meal and unite for a cause,” she said. “It asks us all to remember to not take easy access to water for granted, and to raise our glasses to fill hundreds more.”

Houston Airport System Helps Its Community Soar

The Houston Airport System (HAS) is a network of three airports - George Bush Intercontinental Airport, William P. Hobby Airport, and Ellington Airport, serving the city’s over 5 million residents.

Its mission is to “provide a safe and dynamic air services network that fosters economic vitality for the transportation industry and the greater Houston region.”

Rhonda Arnold, Director of Community Relations in External Affairs Division for City of Houston Department of Aviation, would like Houstonians to know more about HAS’ efforts of promoting and educating the community.

“It is our endeavor to provide a positive impact on the quality of life for Greater Houston and Southeast Texas Region and we need the community to thrive,” said Arnold, who has worked with the system since 2009. “As part of our Strategic Plan we must continue to build a better future.”

To accomplish this goal, the department develops and maintains positive, collaborative relationships with business communities, area chambers of commerce, local government, economic development agencies and community organizations in the greater Houston area.

In addition to Mrs. Arnold, Darian Ward, Community Relations Associate and Assistant Public Information Officer, and Mary McKnight, Senior Community Relations Liaison are also members of the dedicated and hardworking Community Relations Department for Houston Airports.

Last year more than 49.5 million passengers traveled through Bush and Hobby, including more than 8.5 million international travelers. The system forms one of North America's largest public airport systems, as well as positions Houston as the international passenger and cargo gateway to the south central United States and a primary gateway to Latin America.

Mrs. Arnold said HAS recognizes its prominence in the travel and aviation community, as well as its ability to serve as an example to others in the industry. The three key philanthropic areas of focus for the Houston Airport System are education, small businesses, and the environment.

“We partner with Houston Independent School District, Aldine Independent School District and Houston Works, Incorporated to raise awareness of community participation and careers in aviation,” Mrs. Arnold said.

To date, the Community Relations Department participated in 43 Career Days and 9 tour-related activities. HAS also supports small business development in the area, which is a sector of increased importance in this economy.

“One of the many things we do to support small businesses is work closely with the Office of Business Opportunities to support the development of a sustainable pool of Houston-based MWBE Outreach,” she said. “We have also participated in the Runway to Business Opportunities event , and the Government Procurement Connections conference which introduces bidding opportunities available for certified small businesses.”

Mrs. Arnold said one of the most important programs that she collaborates with is the Combined Municipal Campaign (CMC), which is a program to engage airport employees and the general community to contribute to non-profit, charitable organizations. The Houston Airport System holds several community events that support this initiative.

“During the 2010 contribution year, the Houston Airport System was recognized as raising the most funds of all City of Houston departments,” she said.

This year the Director of Aviation, Mario C. Diaz, is serving as the co-chair of CMC for the entire City of Houston. Along with Ms. Gabrielle Dirden, the liaison of CMC for HAS, Mrs. Arnold hopes that the local aviation system will continue to be a leader with the campaign for years to come.

There are three signature events slated for 2012, the Endurance Run to be held at Bush Intercontinental; the 911 Heroes Run and Aeros & Autos are highly-anticipated events, both are held annually at Ellington Airport. The Aeros & Autos event benefits the United Service Organizations (USO) and showcases prized autos along with military and private planes.

In addition to its charitable giving and volunteerism programs, Arnold said Houston Airport System is implementing measures to protect the environment as well.

“We are very cognizant of the importance of the green initiatives, so we work closely with area schools and chambers with activities to support these efforts,” she said. “In addition to assisting the Humble Clean Up Day with Nimitz High School, last year we launched the more environmentally-conscious Ecopark shuttle service at Bush Airport.”

The shuttles run on compressed natural gas (CNG). The vehicles were made available due to a partnership between the Houston Airport System (HAS) and Houston-based energy giant Apache Corporation in an effort to support the City of Houston’s Green Initiative, which aims to reduce particulate matter and green house gas. The buses transport an estimated 676,000 people, operate more than 1 million miles annually and reduce fuel costs by an estimated $2 per gallon.

The 20-year community leader said her work with HAS is fueled by her genuine passion for giving back, and also allows her to express her personal beliefs about philanthropy.

“My philosophy is 'pay it forward by enriching others and you, too, will find happiness'.”

Dallas Violinist Nurtures the Musical Talents of Youth

Violinist Richmond Punch is quickly becoming a recognizable name and face in Texas and beyond. The Founder of Richmond Punch Productions, he has traveled the world to perform for audiences consisting of up to 16,000 people. The 30-year-old musician also lends his time and talents to nurture youth through the Dallas Uptown Youth Orchestra, a program of the Punch Family Foundation. The philanthropic entrepreneur graciously shared details with Gulf Coast Philanthropy about his family’s charitable organization, as well as his journey to becoming a highly sought-after Violinist. Gulf Coast Philanthropy: You were essentially a child prodigy. When did you first pick up the violin and what prompted you to continue playing?

Richmond Punch: I was introduced to the violin at age 5 in public Montessori school by a teacher with a amazing dedication to each one of her students. It was in that environment, combined with the nurturing upbringing of my mother, that allowed me to fall in love with the instrument on a personal level. After participating in my first summer camp at the University of Texas at Austin, I studied at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan, Southern Methodist University Pre-College, and Aspen Music Festival. I also got to play in England, France and Scotland with Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra. Combined with hard work, this type of exposure and the free lessons offered by a program of the Dallas Symphony helped me to be able to go to my first choice school, The Juilliard School, which is one of the most prestigious schools in the world. I also completed my master's degree at Yale University, a peaceful place to hone your skills academically and artistically.

GCP: When did you launch Richmond Punch Productions and how has it grown since then?

RP: In 2005 I started Richmond Punch Productions after facing difficulty finding a job as a member of a major symphony orchestra. When I became an entreprenuer, I had only a violin for the events I wanted to do and some jazz and classical music under my belt. Now, in 2011, I have Violin, Violin with DJ, Jazz Band, String Quartet. At a recent event I played everything from New Orleans Jazz and Devil Went Down to Georgia to I Want You Back [by Jackson 5] and Black Eyed Peas' I Gotta Feeling.

GCP: Who are your musical influences?

RP: I love the music of “Stuff” Smith, my favorite violinist, but I am also influenced by Itzhak Perlman, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Quest Love, Esperanza Spalding and others.

GCP: When was the Punch Family Foundation started, and why was it launched?

RP: Punch Family Foundation was started meet my financial needs to be able to graduate from Juilliard and Yale, and it continued thereafter because many musicians back home in Dallas had similar needs. We sought a way to help others and began with a partial college scholarship initiative and then continued with the Dallas Uptown Youth Orchestra. We also are excited about the growth of our community service and doing workshops, concerts and summer camps in Houston and around the U.S.

GCP: Do other companies collaborate with you to support your Foundation?

RP: Yes they do. In 2007 we started what is today our largest program, Dallas Uptown Youth Orchestra. In transitioning from giving scholarships to training students in an orchestra, we needed to find a place to teach our Youth. Since 2007, The Trinity Trust, which funds the Trinity River Project in Dallas, lent their space to our non-profit. Next, we were able to use space at a church, St. Paul United Methodist Church, and we've spent the last two years at The Point Center for Arts and Education at C.C. Young retirement community. At present we are searching for a new home in Dallas because of C.C. Youngs need to bring more seniors into living spaces and provide activities for the seniors themselves. These partnerships have worked well. In each venue we would give free community performances as a thank you for their lower rent and fully donated properties for our use. Since we presently searching for a new practice facility, we are asking for any suggestions in the Dallas, Uptown, North Dallas and other centralized locations so that we can find a new home for our 2011-2012 Season.

GCP: There are essentially three programs associated with the Foundation, but you are specifically the Artistic Director of the Dallas Uptown Youth Orchestra program. Tell me about this initiative and your involvement with youth.

RP: Dallas Uptown Youth Orchestra is a music program for youth ages 5-18. We teach kids orchestra, private lessons, music theory through classical music and styles of music that young people today are listening to. We want each kid to have a chance at a music scholarship to college and our focus is Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass. We work with Southern Methodist University and other local colleges where we seek volunteers and pay other teachers to teach our students. A Violin is as low as $100.00. We welcome sponsors for all our areas of need.

GCP: Growing up in Dallas, were there any individuals and/or community organizations that nurtured your academic and skill development?

RP: Yes. Individuals who have made a difference in my life include Isabell Cottrell. Organizations such as United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, Sponsors of the Dallas Symphony and local arts in Dallas, The Brotherhood Inc. of Anchorage Alaska, and Big Brothers and Big Sisters Dallas and National have also made a difference in my life from giving my single parent mother resources to hiring me for corporate and special events entertainment.

GCP: What is your philosophy about giving back?

RP: Great question. I donate to many causes as I have constantly expanded my window of opportunity and I notice that my life and career is growing as a result. My philosophy is this: give back to something new such as Punch Family Foundation, give wholeheartedly and your best, and expect a return because it will happen.

GCP: What is the ideology by which you live by each day?

RP: Well I am a Christian and I believe that God has placed me on this earth for a reason. I also believe that even if I can touch one person in an audience of 10,000, I am doing God’s work. I am able to do it in so many styles of music, venues, and reach so many cultures. It is an honor to do something you love. God is good!

Art & Inspiration: Houston Art Gallery Supports Local Lecture Programs

The most effective initiatives often utilize the appeal of popular social events to inspire and motivate community development. Houston’s Wade Wilson Art Gallery is doing just that: leveraging the vibrant art community to support nonprofit programs. Founded by longtime art critic and enthusiast Wade Wilson in 2006, the gallery is located in the city’s historic Montrose area. Wade Wilson Art Gallery showcases painters, photographers and sculptors whose work “reflects current movements in international art circles”.

“Houston has an extraordinary art community and a great community period,” Wilson said. “It’s rare that you’ll ask someone to step up and they don’t - that’s what I love about philanthropy in this town.”

Wade Wilson Art Gallery is one of many supporters of the Brilliant Lecture Series, a Houston-based non-profit organization whose aim is to motivate and inspire by presenting national and international leaders, role models, philanthropists, artists, humanitarians, authors, and entrepreneurs.

Scott Brogan, Founding Director of the Brilliant Lecture Series, said the organization accomplishes this goal through its educational programs, including an International Youth Leadership Exchange, the Brill Talks in-school interactive dialogues, and the quarterly Conversation with… series. Previous speakers include international luminaries Diana Ross, Sir Sidney Poitier, former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Global Colors Founder Barton Brooks and Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan to name just a few.

“We provide a unique forum in Houston that integrates education and entertainment without social or political agenda,” Brogan said. “The young and the young at heart come from across the United States and around the world to share these rare and candid conversations with the most fascinating people in the world.”

The collaboration was launched when Wilson and Brogan were introduced by mutual colleagues. Both shared the belief that one person can initiate change, and are committed to inspiring and motivating people to achieve their goals.

Most recently, the two organizations collaborated to host an educational program focused on Haiti at the Wade Wilson Art Gallery. Wilson said he has been especially impressed with the school-based inspirational lecture programs of Brilliant Lecture Series, and how the speakers really impart the idea that one idea and one person can change the world.

“That sort of empowerment can create a level of confidence that doesn’t exist in many students these days,” Wilson said. “That’s the beauty of the Brilliant Lecture Series: it inspires people to be better, to do better with what they have, and to try to stretch beyond their limitations.”

Scott Brogan launched the Brilliant Lecture Series in 2005 after recognizing the lack of opportunity most have to hear from and speak with such influential people. “If our speakers came to Houston, most of them spoke at private, black-tie events. At such events, these icons of our society are not sharing the unique journey of their life but are telling the dinner guests how wonderful they are for attending the event and supporting that particular cause,” he said. He found that these events, while worthwhile, are not accessible to most people, especially our youth who need to hear from these role models now more than ever.

“Prior to the Brilliant Lecture Series, there was a huge disconnect between their powerful stories and the people that need to be in the room to hear and receive those messages,” Brogan said. The former political strategist decided to leverage his connections to address this need and ensure that these types of stories were shared.

For Wilson, this collaboration with his art gallery allows him to continue his support of local organizations. During his career in the arts, Wilson has helped to support fundraisers generating over eight million dollars for community initiatives since moving to Houston in 2000. Wilson asserts these community involvements efforts have been mutually beneficial. “Corporate support for programs like this is invaluable,” he emphasized. “It helps me to be a part of something bigger and engages the community I want to engage.”

For both Wilson and Brogan, this partnership effectively merges the creativity of the art world with the inspirational stories of people who manifested their basic ideas into global movements.

“I really love the idea that we’re changing the public’s vision of people who are changing the world,” Wilson said.

Sales Executive Leverages 'Sphere of Influence' to Benefit Charities

The best way to describe Susan Casias’ energy is to think of a latte with a double shot of espresso. Yes, it’s that jolting and vibrant! Her zest for life and passion for supporting charities are infectious and magnetic.

“I often hear ‘I want what she’s got’,” Casias said. “I tell people ‘you have it, you’ve just got to pay attention and tap into it’.”

She graciously uses her ‘it factor’ to benefit Houston area non-profit organizations by tapping into her business connections and hosting high-profile Shred Days to raise money for non-profit organizations. Casias held her first fundraising Shred Day in 2008 while working with a large Houston-based recycling and shredding company.

In addition to serving on various community boards and mentoring youth in her church, she currently donates 20 Saturdays annually to coordinating and promoting the shredding fundraisers for non-profit organizations. Individuals donate a minimum of $10 to the selected organization, and their documents are then securely destroyed.

Casias’ journey to hosting these events was a logical transition, considering her background. She has always had an interest in sales and increasing public awareness about important issues. “I was doing these shred days for the public on weekend because I have a passion for the security of information, having been a victim of identity theft a couple of times myself,” Casias said.

In 2008, a colleague suggested raising money for non-profit organizations and she quickly began working to implement the concept.

The first organization she sponsored was Memorial Assistance Ministries, which was the “Charity of the Month” for the Houston West Chamber of Commerce. The first Shred Day was a huge success. “We raised $2,000 for that first event!” she said. An additional benefit to the organization was increased public awareness due to Casias’ large professional network.

At the time, she was working with a larger company, but eventually transitioned to working with Texas Security Shredding (TSS), a smaller company. Due to the cost of providing the shredding materials, TSS was only able to subsidize the cost of providing the resources for each Shred Day at a cost of $450.

Faced with this dilemma, Susan set out to research options that would allow her to still support local organizations. “I couldn’t find anyone to do this for free, and Texas Security Shredding charged the least amount for this service,” she said. In addition to reaching into her own pocket, Casias said she also recognized the power of her “sphere of influence” and opportunities to tap into her resources.

“My former clients from my previous employer hunted me down,” she said. “I realized companies didn’t care what company I was working for – they just wanted to work with Susan,” she said.

She decided to roll the dice and reach out to her colleagues to donate the funds needed for the first Shred Day she planned to host with Texas Security Shredding. “The first time I e-mailed my business friends, it took less than thirty minutes to get the underwriting the organization needed,” she said.

Casias also sent word out to her business colleagues to ensure a large turnout for the event. Sara Rice, Volunteer Coordinator for Memorial Assistance Ministries, said the organization has hosted eight events with Casias and Texas Security Shredding, which has exposed more people to her organization.

“It’s been a new way for people to come out and learn about us,” Rice said. “We also pair the shredding events with Houston Computer recycling, so it’s a green and environmentally-friendly event.”

For Casias, the Shred Days have affirmed her belief that “there is always a way to help a charity.” She provided the following suggestions for individuals seeking to support non-profit organizations:

Think beyond money and large amounts of time. “Dedicating just an hour a week to volunteering for a local charity is a great way to help.”

Co-op your efforts to maximize the impact. “Combine your funds with friends and contribute your funds to one organization,” she advised.

Use your voice to support an organization’s fundraising or public awareness initiatives. “Find a charity who needs people to make phone calls,” she said. “Let’s say you’re homebound; this is a great way to support a charity and interact with people.”

Reach out to your circle of friends. “You’d be surprised by how many people in your circle already contribute to a charity, and don’t say anything about it,” she said.

Casias said these events have reinforced her spiritual values. “To be forthcoming, I wasn’t always the best citizen,” she said. Since turning her life around, she said she feels empowered by her ability to give back and watch her efforts grow through the organizations she supports. “When you’re doing everything you’re supposed to do, God just puts things in front of you and gives you everything you need.”

Guest Feature: Continuity of Plans for Nonprofit Organizations

As we embark upon the month of June we are reminded that hurricane season is upon us once again. Luckily for south Florida, our major disasters are somewhat seasonal and predictable and therefore we should be better prepared than some of our neighbors facing unannounced tragedies such as earthquakes, flooding and tornado damage.

As community based organizations we have a responsibility to: 1) protect our staff and property (physical assets and agency records); and 2) also to serve as a resource to our community in times of need. In my area, the Miami Dade County Office of Emergency Management has a template for organizations to use. Organization may also design their own plan or to update/strengthen your existing plan using the Continuity of Operations Plan provided by the Virtual Community Action Network.

According to the county-provided Continuity of Operations Plan, “the plan should develop procedures for alerting, notifying, activating and deploying employees; identify mission essential functions; establish an alternate facility; and roster personnel with authority and knowledge of functions.”

Disaster and emergency preparedness should not be limited to the hurricane season and wind and water damage. Fire, electricity outages and hazardous waste spills are probably more likely to occur than an explosion at Florida's Turkey Point or a tsunami in Biscayne Bay. Having mission-critical information stored in a secure and accessible off-site location or on the “cloud” are great first steps to ensuring data is not lost and downtime can be minimized.

An Emergency Communications Plan should be in place to share critical information with key people and agencies. Defining, in advance, what role your agency can serve in the event of a localized disaster is another value-added sign of your organization’s commitment to the community’s well-being. Residents might seek your agency out in a disaster as a communal gathering place and a source of information and safety whether you plan for that to happen or not. Is your organization ready?

Texas Entrepreneur and Prairie View Graduate Inspires Austin Youth to Achieve

Most people never refer back to past homework assignments for inspiration, let alone to just review them. However, Ramont Mittchell, owner of Austin-based Supreme Clientele Hair and Massage Studio, referenced an assignment from an old college course and converted it into a successful business.

“A friend and I developed the idea for the business for my engineering economics course while at Prairie View [A&M University],” he said. “I am literally carrying out the exact concept now.”

The project detailed futuristic barbershops that included innovative technology for clients. “My business actually has a café, private TV rooms and Wi-Fi internet for clients,” he said. “People can come on their lunch break and get their hair done.”

In addition to his salon, Mittchell is also an author and fitness trainer. “My philosophy is that everything I can do well, I will turn into a business,” he said. “I am essentially turning myself into a walking portfolio.”

The 35-year-old Detroit native said he committed himself to retiring at this age when he was a teenager - and he did just that! “Last year on my 35^th birthday, I submitted my 30-day notice to Dell,” he said. “I figured whatever I was doing for myself at the point, that’s what I would do.”

The young entrepreneur honed his skills perfecting the hairlines of his undergraduate classmates while studying electrical engineering at Prairie View A&M University. “I realized I was good at it and enjoyed it, so I planned to open a barbershop after I graduated.”

After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree, he worked for Fortune 500 companies, including Dell, for three years to secure the capital he needed to fund his business aspirations. In 2006, he secured a facility and worked as the lone barber in the shop. “I started off with one person then, and now I have thirteen employees in 2011,” he said

Mittchell is just as proud and proactive about his charitable work as he is about this business. After recognizing his unique position as a barber and the potential to impact the lives of young males, he decided to use these opportunities to encourage and inspire his clients.

“People talk in salons,” Mittchell said. “I realized I had the opportunity to speak with so many male high school students who come in for haircuts.”

The multi-talented entrepreneur first decided to focus on having constructive dialogue with his clients, and serve as a positive role model. . “I wanted them to see that I own this business, and that I don’t just talk about success – I am success,” he said. “I started asking young black males about school and their favorite subject before discussing the latest basketball game.”

Mittchell’s commitment to youth stems from his upbringing in a tough Detroit neighborhood. “If you think of the worst neighborhood scenario, that’s where I lived,” he said. “I want to show young people that they can be a success no matter where they come from.”

This philosophy and his desire to change the lives of young people motivated him to launch the Ramont Mittchell Foundation in 2006, which promotes “continuous investment in the development of self” to high school kids through academic, aptitude and attitude awareness. "

Initially the organization offered free hair cuts and hair styling to high school students throughout the academic year, provided they maintained a certain grade point average. “That was the backbone of the Foundation,” he said. Mittchell also began to host annual school supply drives to provide resources to students in need.

Now, the organization is developing monthly sessions on leadership development, money management, healthy eating and entrepreneurship for high school students. “I try to get it in these young people’s heads that ‘hey, you don’t have to just cash the check – you can write the check’,” he said.

His salon staff and operations also serve as a positive example to his clients. Supreme Clientele’s maintains a strict dress code policy for both staff and clients, and only Rhythm and Blues music is played throughout the day. “I want both a child who is five-years-old and an 80-year-old to feel comfortable in my shop,” he said.

His future plans? “I’m working on two more books and I plan to franchise,” he said. His goal is to become what he refers to as “the Wal-Mart of barber shops.” In essence, he wants to offer clients everything they could possibly need from a personal service with regard to hair and nails.

Mittchell said he also aims to have a sustainable impact in the greater Austin area. “I’m here to support my community for the long haul, and I honestly just want people to remember me as being sincere,” he said. “Everything that I do comes from the right place.”

Flex space and mixed-use buildings: changing times, new opportunities

Business incubators have been around a long time. They provide office space for small businesses and start-up companies that is shared, making it more affordable than locating office space individually.

Business incubators are usually sponsored by community organizations that promote entrepreneurship through education and mentorship. There can be intense competition for spots in these coveted incubators. But where there’s competition, there is innovation.

Enter the flex space. The term flex space typically refers to larger offices that have been updated to allow several types of business in a single location such as light manufacturing and shipping. But today’s flex space is more versatile and more accessible.

Americans are working from home in record numbers, either as a telecommuters or as a self-employed contractors. This shift has led to home offices becoming the norm, either as a stand-alone room in a home, or simply a small area carved out for a small workspace that can also serve as (or flex) as living space. This idea has also merged with the rise of mix used buildings.

Land developers and city planners across the U.S. are embracing the idea of mixed-use buildings, which allow consumers to live, work and shop in the same area in some cases. These buildings typically feature an anchor business, such as a bank or grocery store, as well service-based businesses, such as dry cleaners and restaurants. These anchor or service-based businesses may be located on the ground level, while the apartment or condo units are on the upper floors. This flexible model has been expanded to include the small business owner. Mixed-use buildings seeking to attract small business owners often provide an apartment or condo that is attached to a business space, which has a separate street level entrance from the living quarters.

A few examples of various mixed-use buildings in Gulf Coast states include Houston’s CityCenter, the Downtown Development District in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the award-winning Tapestry Park European Village in Jacksonvilla, Florida.

Depending on the type of business and location of the building, the cost of renting or buying this type of flex space in a mixed-use building is often much less expensive than seeking out a separate office. This concept allows more people to bring their business aspirations into reality.

Cooperatives: Models of Community and Sustainability

Today’s businesses are in fierce competition for customers. More and more, customers are aware that what they buy and where they buy it has a direct impact on our communities through sales tax and how businesses reinvest in the communities they serve. Common ways that businesses reinvest in the community include offering scholarships, donating a percentage of their profits, or simply making regular contributions of money, services, or volunteer hours to charitable organizations. However, cooperative businesses go even further, defining their purpose and success in terms of how they support the community.

Cooperatives, commonly called co-ops are, “autonomous associations of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprises.” Examples of co-operative businesses include credit unions (this is why members of one credit union can use teller services and ATMs from another credit union free of charge), as well as some grocery stores and apartments complexes in large metropolitan cities.

Further, their business model is based on environmentally conscious growth that is sustainable and equitable.

Louisiana Company Mends Roofs and Spirits of Residents

“Pay it forward,” is the advice Billy Savely, owner of Roofing Louisiana, LLC, gives to recipients of his quarterly roof giveaway to needy families.

He launched this initiative through his Lafayette, Louisiana-based company in October 2010 after recognizing the impact of the economy on his business.

“It was literally our worst year,” he said. Rather than focus on his lack of clientele, Savely shifted his attention to contributing to the community.

“If I couldn’t sell a roof, I decided to flip the situation: I would give one away to a family in need. Times were hard, but I had faith. I knew that what you give, you get back.”

He promoted the campaign on social media websites and even purchased radio advertisements. Over 1,400 residents applied for the company’s first roof giveaway, and the first recipient was provided with a new roof for Christmas 2010. Overwhelmed by this large response, Savely said he and his staff selected a first and second place winner. “I never knew the level of need for this sort of thing,” he said.

Residents like Dale Benoit, who was selected for the first giveaway, really emphasized the need for this campaign, Savely said.

“She risked getting electrocuted because there was water getting into her light fixtures,” he said. “When it rains some nights, I can’t sleep when I think people who have holes in their roofs and the electrical outlets getting wet.”

The cost of labor and materials for each new roof is approximately $4,000, all of which was initially contributed by Roofing Louisiana.

The company was actually founded as a result of Savely recognizing how contractors were taking advantage of area residents. In 2002, Hurricane Lili ripped through the Gulf of Mexico, including the nearly 48-square mile city of Lafayette. “I saw local and out-of-town contractors really taking advantage of people,” he said.

Armed with previous entrepreneurial experience and an understanding the threat of annual natural disasters in the area, Savely said he launched the construction / roofing company committed to providing honest, good service.

“The slogan we’ve had for 10 years now is ‘We’re Not Leaving Town’,” he said. “I only had a financial management background, but I was experienced in business enough to know you surround yourself with people smarter than yourself or more knowledgeable in the industry,” he said.

Using those skills and the work ethic instilled in him by his mother, Guadalupe Cochran, Savely launched his roofing company the following year. “My mother worked hard to raise six kids by herself – all with morals and values,” he said. “I knew my mother needed help at times, and someone always helped, now I ‘pay it forward’ by helping others.”

Savely said those hardships allowed him to have certain perspective and understand for those in need. “We moved twelve times in one year,” he said. “I know what it is to be in a bad situation or just need help.”

His company’s philanthropic efforts recently garnered the support of other businesses: Owens Corning and GAF/ELK have agreed to donate $3,000 worth of shingles; and Stines Home Improvement and West End Roofing Supply both plan to deliver products and accessories. Further, a local consignment shop owner offered to provide clothing for one of the future roof giveaway recipients.

“This isn’t about glory because we’re already the largest residential roofing company in Lafayette,”he said. “This is sincerely about helping people.”

Savely said he his proudest moment since launching the campaign occurred when one of the recipients unexpectedly contacted him. “A few days after fixing the roof of one of our first recipients I received a text message from them,” he said. “It just said ‘Mr. Billy, thanks again and I just paid it forward.’”

Roofing Louisiana is currently accepting applications for its next roof giveaway. The deadline is June 30, 2011, and applications should be submitted online by visiting the company website.

Passion Into Action: Employee Volunteer Programs

In honor of National Volunteer Week (April 10-16, 2011) it seems apropos to highlight the importance and potential of employee volunteer programs (EVP).

In the 1970s, under the Nixon Administration, businesses were called to assume broader responsibility for the quality of American life and to expand their somewhat myopic focus from profit and corporate business alone to people and community business as well. This charge resulted in the birth of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and EVPs were established as a pillar of CSR.

Through EVPs, employees were increasingly encouraged to volunteer with local organizations and to participate in company-sponsored community projects. Since the first documented case of employee volunteerism, the number of companies who support EVPs has continued to grow as well as the number of employees actively participating in these programs.

Employee volunteerism continues to rise and there is no wonder with so many benefits for the company and the community. EVPs benefit companies by:

Complimenting business goals - Community investment helps build community capacity, creating a stable, sustainable and healthy local community that will often supply the company’s employees and customers.
Building employee morale – EVPs allow employees to find an enjoyable way to interact with colleagues and the community.
Providing teamwork/teambuilding activities – Volunteering can foster inter-departmental cohesion by enabling new teams to work together and create a sense of common purpose.
Creating leadership opportunities - Working outside the constraints of the company may allow unlikely leaders to emerge and use skills that are otherwise untapped.

Addressing and helping to alleviate community issues - EVPs seek out causes that matter to the company and the community. Nonprofit organizations can benefit from EVPs in the following ways:

Increasing visibility - Partnerships offer an expanded audience to which nonprofit organizations can communicate community needs and organizations that are working to address them.
Increasing credibility – A partnership between a well-known business entity and a lesser known non profit organization can raise the credibility of the latter within the community served and the business community.
Providing networking opportunities – Partnerships between the nonprofit and for profit sectors open lines of communication between diverse sections of the community.
Employing new talents/ideas to meet community needs – EVPs provide new talent and energy by increasing the number of volunteers and pool of available skills and increases capacity to provide community service.
Leveraging business savvy – There is a trend among EVPs to provide expertise to the nonprofit sector and to enlist the help of the nonprofit for its expertise rather than going to an outside consultant.

Neither of the lists of benefits are exhaustive. And the bottomline is that successful EVPs that are meaningful and sustainable result in meaningful impacts for companies, their employees and the community. Employee volunteer programs allow a company to invest in a community and allow nonprofit organizations to increase their impact by enlisting the help of others.

“Corporate” Social Responsibility: Small (to Medium) Business, Big Impact

What drives businesses to commit to corporate social responsibility? Well it depends on who you ask. The C in CSR is for corporate. However, small and medium businesses engage in CSR activities and are committed to its principles in a big way. But, there are marked differences in how corporations engage in CSR and how smaller businesses make decisions about donating their resources – both human and financial.

More times than not the owners/managers of small and medium businesses use personal values rather than expected business benefits as the motivating factor for engaging in activities that contribute to the social good. In other words, their decisions to give can be guided by the heart (doing good for goodness sake) and not the head (doing good for business sake). Because small and medium size businesses often engage in CSR without a related business strategy, they demonstrate a true commitment to the community and to the charities and organizations to which they contribute.

What does this mean to the nonprofit organizations? Nonprofit organizations that are looking to diversify their funding and increase sustainability should consider approaching small to medium size businesses for their time and talent. Local businesses that are familiar with the local nonprofit organization are likely to give money or manpower/womanpower to events and programs. This can be as substantial as a yearlong effort to raise money for a charity, cause, nonprofit organization, or as simple as providing complimentary meeting space or hosting a canned food drive in the business’ lobby. Whether the plan for contributing to the nonprofit organization is simple or substantial, the organization should keep in mind sustainability while creating and cultivating a relationship with the business owner/manager. The relationship with the business should be long-term and mutually beneficial.

On the other hand, what does this mean for small to medium size businesses? These types of businesses can - and should - continue to be guided by their passion when making decisions about giving. However, they may also want to borrow some lessons from the big boys and communicate their giving in a formal way to their employees, local market and the community. Evidence shows that businesses that are perceived as socially responsible attract and retain more customers and vendors. Thus, effectively reporting community investment can affect a business’ bottom line.

Reports of community investment need not be complex and overly formal. They can be presented on company websites, through press releases or published brochures. Moreover, reports can be low cost and high yield. If expertise or cost is an issue, business owners may want to consider contracting with a community involvement advisor with writing expertise to assist with integrating a CSR report into their marketing plan.

Employing and communicating use of CSR initiatives can ensure a big impact for a business’ bottom line by increasing its customer base and fostering employee leadership development. Garnering support from local business owners who share the vision of the nonprofit organization can have a substantial impact on the organization’s capacity to serve the local community. In other words, through use of effective community engagement initiatives, small (to medium) businesses can make a big impact.

During my seven years working in eight countries across southern Africa with Africare, I know my efforts resulted in a new and empowered class of African development professionals working with international credentials today. Projects I managed produced the intended results: refugees were eventually repatriated with new income generating skills and a solid basic primary education. Farmers are still growing improved varieties of maize and orange fleshy sweet potatoes, and mothers have passed on new recipes to their daughters on how to make nutritiously enriched porridge using locally sourced products. So now what?

When I officially began my professional career working in international development in 1997, the common philosophy guiding me and my freshly hatched college graduate colleagues was how we were working with the goal of building local capacity as a way to “work ourselves out of a job”. Well that is exactly what I did and now thirteen years after making this pledge I have transitioned to embrace a new mission statement.

Building on the past five years of working with dozens of local nonprofits in Miami, I was interested in building on my lessons learned in Africa to develop new solutions based on the following:

1) technology that did not exist a short ten years ago;
2) technological contributions to the quickly evolving field of collaboration; and
3) impressive opportunities to develop new social enterprises as a way to ultimately provide viable, funded local solutions to local problems.

This is the next wave of global philanthropy: self-inspired solutions to local problems which require culturally competent, appropriate technology. While hopefully the giants of global philanthropy like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will remain active for a long time to come, this movement will further democratize global philanthropy by supporting hyper-local efforts. As donors and technical assistance consultants in the field, we must provide and fund that middle step between the project and the international donor to help ensure local solutions to project success, sustainability and onward marketing.

Transitioning the skills, knowledge and successes that I developed during community meetings under trees, in refugee camps and with Ambassadors and Heads of States to an equally exciting and rewarding career back in the

United States

has become an insightful journey in itself. I now work in Miami with community-based organizations, and each day I find far more similarities to my work in Africa than I expected - but in a surprisingly different way. In an opposite way, actually. While we worked hard to ensure accountability, sustainability and results were at the foundation of all of our development programs with Africare, these concepts are largely absent from the nonprofit and donor sectors in my new hometown. Funding tends to follow historic relationships and largely ignores deep community impact and social change. These sorts of projects would not have the luxury of continuing in Africa. Without demonstrated impact-based results, ongoing project funding would not be renewed.

Bringing this international development and global philanthropy perspective to U.S.-based community development has been exciting. Just this week I discussed a related concept with the University of Miami, specifically the implementation of the community health worker model based on Project Medishare’s success in Haiti. This model would allow for more effective outreach in Miami around school health initiatives. Best practices are abundant in global philanthropy, which can equally be applied as domestic solutions. Global after all does not mean just “them”. It means “us”. All of us.

Houston Networking Guru Combines Business and Philanthropy

There are times when one may arrive at a perpetual fork in the road in life. The chosen path often unexpectedly shifts the direction of one’s life for the better. Small business owner Tony Gambone arrived at his own fork two years ago, and the subsequent detour has allowed him to impact numerous business owners and non-profit organizations.

Born in Pennsylvania, the 13-year Houston resident and community volunteer hosts both his own blog radio show, Tough Talk with Tony Gambone, and networking events in conjunction with InHouston. Local charities are spotlighted during these programs, and all proceeds from the networking events are donated to the selected charity.

“I wish I could I say I was this really smart guy who had a dream one day about how this was all going to happen,” Gambone said. “I definitely didn’t plan this, but I’ve been fortunate.”

Prior to launching his blog radio show and becoming one of the most recognizable faces in Houston, Gambone’s career included managing a Las Vegas casino and operating a successful construction company with his wife Wendy. His segue into business networking and consulting began in 2009. It was that year Gambone said he was told he had eight blood clots in his lungs. “I was told I had a forty percent chance of getting out of the hospital,” he said.

Though he survived, Gambone was unable to continue working in the construction industry after completing treatment. He decided to take time off to determine his new career path. On a whim, he decided to launch his popular Tough Talk with Tony Blog Talk radio show to improve his public speaking skills. “My wife thought that would be a good name because of where I’m from,” he said.

Gambone recruited a friend to help him launch and promote the show on Facebook in early 2009. He interviewed entrepreneurs about their businesses in an effort to help them market their services. “I started doing the show once a week, then three times a week, and then ninety minutes a show,” he said. “Then people started asking me to sponsor my show and do commercials for them.”

Fast forward nearly two years later and Gambone said this initial hobby is now a business venture. Tough Talk features guests from all over the country three days per week. While Gambone’s larger-than-life personality has made him a recognizable face in the Houston community, he admits his notoriety came as an unexpected surprise. “I honestly didn’t even know why people liked me so much,” he chuckled.

Through his volunteer efforts, he identified the Joe Joe Bear Foundation, an organization that provides new teddy bears to children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses. He said the Foundation resonated with him due to his personal experience with managing Crohn’s disease, a chronic digestive illness, since he was a teenager. The Foundation was the first organization Gambone highlighted through his ventures, and he is a former Board member.

“What I’ve found was that doing things to help other people and organizations has caused other people to want to help me,” he said. Gambone has a penchant for connecting people with the resources and potential partners they need. “I encourage people to seek out new business partners,” he said. “It’s like developing a love affair.”

He also emphasizes the need to determine what one can give - just as he did - during challenging times. He aims to change the way small business owners leverage networking opportunities, and help his colleagues understand the benefits of focusing on helping others rather than selling.

While he understands the value of elevator speeches and business cards, Gambone said he often does not use either when navigating networking events.

“Take the time to learn about other people and how you can help them first,” he said advises. “Life really is that simple, but we often complicate it more than we need to.”

Achieving A Trifecta Through Fundraising Event Corporate Sponsorships

Everyone loves a win-win. Well, how about a win-win-win? A fabulous fundraising event such as a fun run, dance marathon, annual dinner, auction or wine tasting hosted by a nonprofit and sponsored/underwritten by corporations who are committed to corporate social responsibility is a win-win-win: a winning situation for the nonprofit, the corporation and the community they both serve and a nice alternative to answering a foundation's Request for Applications (RFA) or Request for Proposals (RFP).

Foundation funding is one of the most popular streams of funding sought and secured by nonprofits. However, event sponsorships are often offered by the same philanthropic organizations. For example, Comerica Charitable Foundation and Corporate Contributions Program identify several specific charitable priorities. However, Comerica and other corporation's provide sponsorship for charitable events or events held by non-profit organizations. But, why do corporation's sponsor events and why should nonprofits seek sponsorships?

In a nutshell, the nonprofit and for profit have the same goals. On the surface, community organization's purpose for hosting a fundraising event is to provide an experience that amuses, entertains, enlightens, tugs at heart strings and hopefully purse strings.

Non-profit fundraising events also have three underlying goals:

1. Generate publicity for the organization

2. Raise the visibility of the organization

3. Bring in money, preferably new money.

Corporate sponsorship serves a three-fold purpose for the sponsor:

1. Increase company or product awareness

2. Increase visibility

3. Bring in new customers/new money

The corporate sponsor's goal is met through a mutually beneficial arrangement where the non-profit organization solicits businesses, corporations to buy a table, an ad or pay a significant amount of the event's cost in return for having the business name being prominently displayed at the event.

So if you’re a nonprofit ready to host a fundraising event or a for profit organization considering what to do with profits earmarked for community giving, consider the rare trifecta of a corporate sponsored charitable event that increases visibility for the non profit and the for profit, offsets costs of the event and benefits those served in the community.

Comerica Bank: Changing the Face of Financial Institutions

“If you live in a community and conduct business in a community, then it’s imperative to give back to that community,” said Irvin Ashford, Community Development and External Affairs Director for Comerica Bank. This philosophy, he emphasized, serves as the foundation for the company’s community involvement initiatives.

Interestingly enough, Ashford’s career actually began in the non-profit sector. “I’m a community guy who works at a bank,” he said. “I consider myself an investment banker by investing in the community and watching those efforts grow.”

For the past ten years, however, Ashford has invested his own professional skills to support community initiatives on behalf of the company.

Headquartered in Dallas, Comerica’s charitable giving efforts are focused within its primary operating locations of Texas, Arizona, California, Florida and Michigan.

In 2010, the company contributed some $10 million to non-profit organizations nationwide, and its employees contributed over 6,000 volunteer hours in Texas alone. Further, Ashford said the company’s employee contributions have gradually increased over the past four years.

It is through these efforts that Ashford said he strives to change the public’s sometimes fearful perception of financial institutions. “A bank is a facilitator for your dreams,” he said. “They should be considered your partner as you journey through life’s circumstances.”

Ashford said Comerica is committed to being a socially responsible business and making tangible investments in communities. The company’s efforts are driven by a distinct community investment mission, as well as issues that are important to its employees.

Comerica’s charitable giving programs are administered through the Comerica Charitable Foundation and Corporate Contributions Program. The company’s specific charitable priorities focus on ensuring the economic development and self-sufficiency of individuals and families through various philanthropic initiatives, including:

Ashford emphasized the benefit of these community giving initiatives to financial institutions. “The reciprocal nature of volunteerism and giving is more than creating a good feeling,” he said. “We benefit by being able to use our craft in a different and meaningful way.”

In addition, he said employee volunteerism efforts provide a neutral platform for staff members to collaborate, which is vastly different from the traditional competitiveness of corporate culture.

“These community collaborations foster team-building and leadership development in a non-threatening environment,” Ashford said.

He emphasized the company’s support of small businesses in this economic climate, as well as its commitment to ensuring the long-term success of entrepreneurs. “We support small business owners by partnering with community lending organizations like ACCION,” he said.

Ashford attributes the company’s successful partnerships to adhering to two key concepts: Community Buy-In and Mutual Respect.

“Comerica is very good about listening to our community partners to learn about what they need rather than telling them what we will give them,” he said. “If I could emphasize one thing, it would be to earn trust, respect and community buy-in by building long-term partnerships with organizations.”

For Ashford, community development is a concept that extends beyond charitable giving. He also strives to influence the perception of African-American men and foster cultural understanding through his work.

“If you notice, I have locks and there aren’t many men in Corporate America who do,” he said. “I hope the people I interact with in business settings realize I’m the same man both in and out of this suit.”

While his community development goals may seem quite vast and daunting, Ashford humbly perceives his efforts as only a small part of the global circle of those working to create community change.

“The non-profit organizations are the real heroes,” he said. “We’re just a helping hand.”

GCP Founder Wins International Prize from British Airways

British Airways selected Gulf Coast Philanthropy founder Shannon Prudhomme as a recipient of its international 2010 Face of Opportunity Event Prize. She is one of 250 organizations chosen based upon elevator-pitch style essay submissions and public votes.

Her award-winning essay demonstrated a focus on helping local businesses create socially responsible initiatives. Prudhomme learned about the competition through British Airway’s sponsorship of the Houston Black Professionals Meetup group, an organization to which she belongs.

On February 2, 2011, The Face of Opportunity nominees will participate in an exclusive British Airways Face-to-Face Global Entrepreneur Conference in New York City, which will focus on providing small businesses with information and resources to develop a global presence. Following the conference, British Airways will take the nominees to a private networking reception in London, where they will be presented with a complimentary roundtrip ticket to any destination serviced by British Airways.

After participating in the events organized by British Airways, she plans to travel to Uganda to volunteer with the Uganda Village Project. Prudhomme plans to chronicle her experience on the site upon returning from the trip.

Cleaning & Organizing Business Supports Cancer Patients

Jacqueline Wright browsed the internet one day in 2008 and read an article that changed her life. As a result, she now has the ability to impact the lives of many Houston residents. “The article quoted the Department of Commerce as stating that 80% of domestic homes would seek outside assistance to manage their homes,” she said. “I took that information and ran with it!”

Within months of reading the article, Wright said she launched Neena’s Maid and Organizing Service in Houston, Texas. The company reflects both Wright’s love of organizing homes, as well as her lifelong charitable spirit.

“As a child I always enjoyed cleaning the homes of the older family members and neighbors in the fifth ward community of Houston,” she said. “I absolutely loved it!”

Today, Wright still donates her time and talents to others, as well as encourages other businesses and individuals to think broadly about ways to give. “Philanthropy is not just about money,” she emphasizes. “It’s about giving of yourself, your time.”

Her company has provided sponsorships for numerous community events, and recently partnered with the Cleaning for a Reason Foundation, a national organization that provides cleaning services for women undergoing cancer treatment. Through this partnership, patients can apply for services through the Foundation's website.

As a five-year breast cancer survivor, Wright said this new partnership is especially meaningful because she understands the challenges of battling the disease. "A person appreciates you doing something they can’t physically do themselves,” she said. “Cleanliness is especially important for cancer patients since their open wounds cause them to be susceptible to infection.”

While Wright focuses the majority of Neena’s philanthropic efforts on breast cancer initiatives, she also donates her time to various other organizations throughout Houston. Wright says she believes all people have the ability to contribute to their communities in some way. “Find something you can give to someone else and start there,” she says. “The power of giving is that it illustrates that you truly have to give to receive in life.”
