As the weather turns poetically Bay County perfect and the water calls loudly – we have an upcoming meeting (14 May) at the County library and would love to see a great turnout! That I’m providing refreshments, I’ll be prepared.

As one who recently volunteered to help with membership and dues, believe it or not, I have finally arrived at what I believe is an accurate list of members and where we are in annual dues. We’re actually not in bad shape.

In all honesty, while many show in arrears for quite some time, I am tracking only our current position – 2014. You will note that I am sending this “blind copy”. The bottom line, if you have paid your dues for 2024, bless you. If you have not or are unsure, it is $8 single membership and $12 for family. In any case – it is truly the deal of the year. You get a great group of folks with a common interest (shells), a vast corporate knowledge of shells, informative monthly meetings, great summer and Christmas party get together, monthly auctions and awesome refreshments. All for less than a dollar a month. What a deal – geez – we need to raise dues, soooooo – take advantage of all this treasure box while it still remains unchanged!

If you have paid your 2024 dues – THANKS – we appreciate you. If you have not, either (preferably) come to a meeting and pay in person or mail your payment to either myself at 527 School Avenue, Springfield, FL 32401 or mail to Jim Brunner. No matter what, it’s all a “WIN-WIN” for you, the shell club and all points considered.

RE: Visit to Barnes and Noble Booksellers, PCB Parks and Recreation office, and Latitude Margaritaville development in Panama City Beach.

Today Scott and Kathy Dilbeck and Linda and Jim Brunner set out to lay the foundation for future book sales and the recruitment of new members.

First stop was at the new Barnes & Noble Booksellers store in Pier Park North on Panama City Beach. A recent article stated that their new business model allowed more latitude for store managers to place local publications on their shelves. The store manager was receptive to the idea but indicated that we would have to obtain an ISBN number (International Standard Book Number). We have the information on how to obtain this and will check it out.

The second stop was at the PCB Parks and Recreation office. To introduce Scott Dilbeck and to insure that the national election in November would not interfere with the show. We received assurances that this was the case.

The final stop was at the Amenities Center of the Latitude Margaritaville development on Highway 79 just north of West Bay. Our purpose was to propose presenting a program on shell collecting as a hobby with emphasis on the Northwest Florida area. The representative we met with, Jen Yarrish, was very enthusiastic about the idea. We’ll be setting a date for the presentation in the near future..

We’ll keep you informed with updates as they become available.

The bad news is that we need to move the materials in the current unit to the new one this Saturday (and yes it has to be in one day as I only have one lock). I will need help in doing the moving; 3 or 4 people for 3 or 4 hours beginning at 9 AM.

Let me know if you can help and if you have a hand truck or cart available (the new unit is in the same building as the old one and we can use the interior hallway to transfer the items)

I’ll bring the needed tools to disassemble the current unit.

Linda Brunner has been researching like crazy and is ready to tell us about the family Busyconidae (the true Whelks). Do you know the differences between the local species of Pear Whelks? No? If you have one, bring it along along with any other whelks you aren’t sure about. You are more than “whelk-come” to an ID

Also, we need to decide what to do about the CD that matures next month. AND there is a super low tide at Cedar Key on February 10th.

Kathy and Scott Dilbeck have refreshments so let’s kick off the new year with a bang. See you there!
