We would like to take a minute to thank Leo Bunnin and the Bunnin Automotive Group for the wonderful contribution of $1,000 just presented to Gull Wings earlier this week!  The funds will be used to continue providing hands-on exhibits and programs for the kids of Ventura County!

This Thursday, September 15 -  from 10:20 am- 12:00 pm for an exciting and fun lesson on Fossils. This class is held in the back of Gull Wings Children’s Museum and we recommend registering in advance since class size is limited.

GULL WINGS ASTRONAUT EXPERIENCE

What is it like to be an ASTRONAUT?

Since 1961 people have been traveling into space.

How do they do that?

What kind of machines take us there?

What does Mars look like?

Will we travel back to the Moon or fly to Mars?

Find out at Space Center Gull Wings Astronaut Experience!…

     Wear a space suit.

          Eat space food!

                Fly a training mission to the International Space Station!

                    Learn team work!

                         Be an ASTRONAUT for a day!!

Workshops are limited to 15 child participants and cost $4 per child (in addition to regular admission for the day). Pre-registration is STRONGLY recommended. To pre-register, please send an email to director@gullwings.org with the name(s) of the child(ren) participating, their ages, and contact information. You will receive a confirmation email of your reserved spot in the workshop.

Movin’ and Groovin’, our music program, will be moving to Tuesday mornings at 11 am.

Toddler Time, our storytime and craft program, will be moving to Thursday mornings at 11 am.

We will be introducing a new Circle Time program on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am.

We will be holding a special series of workshops aimed at homeschoolers, other young visitors, and their grown-ups during the months of September and October.  Called Focus On…, these workshops will be on different topics and will be packed with fun, hands-on activities.

Heather moved to Ventura County almost 3 years ago from Oakland with her husband and child.  What she loves most about painting is “it can be many different things to different people.

Here is Heather’s story on why she painted the mural at Gull Wings Children’s Museum:

“I guess the best way to start is to say that I wanted to volunteer to paint a mural at Gullwings because I love the service that it provides to our children and our community.  I have a 3 year old who loves to pretend he’s an astronaut and there aren’t many places around that can indulge that fantasy.  Because my family gets so much enjoyment from the museum I decided to give back in the best way I knew how, Painting.” (We are so happy she did!)

“I am currently an art student at CSUCI.  I love to paint, knit and sew.  I have been known to make a bit of jewelry that was sold locally under the name Ascending Peculiarity.  My painting in the past has been smaller scale; portraits mostly.  This is my first mural and I was inspired by Dr. Seuss.”

“I LOVE children’s art, both the art created by adults for children and the art children create themselves.  I think kids have an amazing ability to see and to translate what they see into something wonderful.  Honestly I’m kind of envious sometimes because it’s really hard to duplicate the uninhibited sort of expression kids are capable of.  I think it would be really fun to collaborate with a few kids of different ages on another mural.”

Personally, this writer thinks Heather did a wonderful job of expressing herself in a child friendly mural that is getting a lot of attention by all our guests, children and adults!  A BIG THANK YOU goes out to Heather Jameson for graciously using her talent to beautify Gull Wings Children’s Museum.  If you have a talent, gift or just love to help, please contact us volunteer.  We are always looking for volunteers, big and small!

Tern Plover

a New Leaf!

Saturday, August 20^th,

McGrath State Beach

Gull Wings Children’s Museum partners with our local state parks to present fun, family-friendly programs that get us out for some time in the outdoors!

Have you ever wondered what the names are of the different birds are that you see at the beach?  Have you ever come across fences and signs in the dunes, telling you that part of the beach is off-limits? Join us for this very special walk, when environmental scientist Alexis will share with you the wonderful world of plover and tern nesting protection!  If you have a daughter, be sure to bring her to this event – we will also talk a little about women in science. Bring a hat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and binoculars and/or a camera if you have them.

Participants will pay $5 entrance fee to the park instead of the usual $10 fee.  All money collected will go to Friends of the Channel Coast State Parks.
