Under North Carolina law, statute 14-288.7 automatically went into effect. And that law which goes into effect when there’s a state of emergency prohibits the transportation, purchase sale and possession of firearms other than on one’s own premises.

HUH? Why?  Any particular reason? such as fear of looting etc..?

One question on my mind is, how is everyone supposed to find out about this “emergency deceleration”?

My guess is that it’s broadcast on the Radio and on the TV, but since I never listen to the radio and don’t have satellite or cable, how would I find out about it?  In fact, I don’t even currently own a cell phone.  I use the internet for everything.

If there was some snow on the ground and a few fallen trees, and I thought I could make it to where I was going,  I wouldn’t hesitate to go.  Why should I have to consult numerous sources for the O.K.?  If they ever expect these notification systems to even partially work, they need to broadcast the warning across every type of communication device.

That said, no one likes being told what to do.  Especially when it involves having their rights taken away, even temporarily.

It seems like people either love him or hate him.  I enjoy a majority of his videos, but they are INCREDIBLY long and verbose so I usually end up skipping through them.

People love to give him a rough time for a lot of different reasons which I won’t get into, but if you watch his videos you will likely find the pics below hilarious:

The above picture is poking fun as Nutnfancy’s continuous talk about “Sheepdogs”, which is a metaphor he often uses.  The picture is a photoshop of a screen shot from the famous YouTube tranny Chris Crocker’s video “Leave Britney Alone!”

The picture above I believe is a jab at Nutnfancy’s streed credit.  People often criticize his real world experience and call him a pseudo “operator”.

All I know is that he makes some interesting videos and definitely reviews a lot of cool stuff.  I really could care less about what he does for a living.

Stanley McChrystal, the top U.S. commander in that war zone.  These include popular fast-food outlets like Burger King, Popeyes and Taco Bell, as well as jewelry stores, souvenir stores and new car sales outlets.

“MWR (morale, welfare and recreation) programs across the theater should be limited in scope and tailored for an expeditionary force,” McChrystal said in his order. “MWR should never be the distracter that changes the focus of the mission.”

I know what you are saying Solomon.  I just think you gotta give these guys something to look forward to when they get back to base.  If you make being on base equally as uncomfortable as outside the wire (except for being shot at), It seems to me that morale will suffer greatly, not improve.  I can’t help but feel guilty back here at home, knowing that soldiers are getting even more taken away from them, when they already have very little.

They are already far away from their friends, family, and all the comforts of home.  Risking their lives on a daily basis for surprisingly little pay, and they can’t even enjoy a burger or some fried chicken during their down time?

I understand the possibility of getting “Fat and happy” exists, like you said in your article.  But why punish the soldiers that don’t abuse their privileges?

If you ask me, those guys already sacrifice enough.  We need to do everything possible to keep them motivated.

From talking to you before in email, I know your background enables you to speak with a lot more authority on this topic than myself.  I am interested to hear what you have to say back to my response.

Very nice commercial.. really highlights the guns and the lasers well.

There is a flash of the girl’s face at 1:00 where she looks a bit too happy for someone that could have been stabbed.  Maybe she realized that she had the upper hand

Some thoughts:

• The integration of the laser into the frames (although real well done in this case), is not my preference.  I’d rather see it as an option.
• Red lasers are so last year! … Don’t they know that green is the new red? Better visibility, greater brightness, and better range with the green.
• Ambidextrous cylinder release on revolver is a great idea
• I don’t like the external non-ambidextrous thumb safety on the pistol.  I prefer safeties you don’t have to remember to disengage (ie. like the internal safeties on Glock pistols).

The Packetman saw the post on SayUncle and forwarded my link to his contact at ABC.

Miguel Caballero makes fashionable lightweight bulletproof clothing designed for the world’s elite.

A reporter from VBS.tv goes to Bogota Colombia for a tour of their factory, and gets shot with a revolver from about 1 foot away while wearing one of their jackets.

“I shoot all my employees” says Miguel.  It’s an initiation if you are an employee.

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me, although some of it does look a bit bulky.  Any protection at all beats no protection, and that clothing would definitely save some lives.

In my previous post ABC News – How to get a grenade launcher we talked about how the media always gets their facts wrong, and time and time again manages to blow everything way out of proportion.

A new development from a frequent commenter Josh:

Regardless of all that, one of the stories I ran across said it was a 37mm Cobray grenade launcher. Obviously, 37mm is a flare, not a grenade, and the Cobray website doesn’t indicate that what they manufacture is anything other than a flare launcher. Way to go ABC. I think they might appropriately be called the “Alarmist Broadcasting Company.”

Here is the actual excerpt from the Fox News article he is referring to:

Detectives later searched the room where Woodson had been staying at the Red Mill Inn in Branchburg. BIG difference ABC.. BIG difference.  One is a Destructive Device (40mm) and one is not (37mm).

There is no such thing as “grenades” for the 37mm.

Now I don’t look at FOX as being an authority on gun related news either, but I believe that a lot more than the crap ABC tried to tell us in that newscast.

FOX likely did mess up on this, if it was presumably an AR-15 they are referring to:

Forrest said the .223-caliber assault rifle (Bushmaster) that Woodson was carrying had a defaced serial number and had been altered to fire .50-caliber ammunition.

Altered? as in had a new upper attached to it?

Also, an AR-15 is not an assault rifle.

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

The Firearms Freedom Act (FFA) is a fight for our 10th Amendment right.

In Montana, Tennessee, and hopefully soon in Utah, it would appear that a person can buy or manufacture NFA items (made in state) such as suppressors, short barreled rifles, short barreled shotguns, 20mm rifles etc… without all the Federal paperwork, tax stamps, and other red tape.

In Montana, the bill states the following specific exemptions:

Section 5.  Exceptions. [Section 4] does not apply to:

1. a firearm that cannot be carried and used by one person;
2. a firearm that has a bore diameter greater than 1 1/2 inches and that uses smokeless powder, not black powder, as a propellant;
3. ammunition with a projectile that explodes using an explosion of chemical energy after the projectile leaves the firearm; or
4. a firearm that discharges two or more projectiles with one activation of the trigger or other firing device.

Too bad about #4 covering fully automatic firearms.  These bills are definitely a HUGE step in the right direction!

The Tennessee bill, and the Utah one have the same exceptions as the Montana one.

I can’t help but wonder if anyone has tested the limits of this yet.

What if cars were controlled like guns are?

• You couldn’t own a vehicle with an automatic transmission. Everyone knows automatic transmissions are designed solely to make as many gearchanges as possible with a single shove of the gas pedal.
• You couldn’t sell your own car any more unless you were a licensed dealer. All car sales would have to go through Federally licensed dealers. And you couldn’t purchase a car or transfer the title via mail, either. If you bought a car for your wife, son or daughter, that would be termed a straw man purchase and you could go to jail.
• If you were convicted of any felony, or if you’d ever been involuntarily confined in a psychiatric care facility, you would never be allowed to own, operate or have access to a motor vehicle again, even someone else’s, unless you successfully petitioned a superior court for restoration of your driving right.

• Congress would be debating alternative weapons systems for people who can’t afford their own guns.
• You could carry in any State at any time because carry and possession of your gun is honored nationwide and is considered a basic American civil right.
• You could kill and injure people with your gun while drunk and still have your lawyer get your gun back because you need it for work.

At the very start it shows 2 kids playing with a gun.  I know the point they are trying to get across, but really?

At 51 seconds the gun clicks, indicating that it actually would have fired a round when the guy not wearing the watch pulled the trigger.

Gun rights advocates are hoping for even fewer restrictions on where they can have a firearm. Among their top goals is to make Arizona the third state where it is legal to carry a concealed weapon without a permit. Bills in the House and the Senate would also eliminate background checks and training classes for people to carry hidden guns.

“All we’re doing is handcuffing good people, restricting their constitutional, God-given right to carry and perhaps their ability to defend their families,” said State Senator Russell Pearce, a Mesa Republican sponsoring the bill.

Right on!

Police departments worry that making permits optional might encourage more people with bad motives to carry concealed weapons, said John Thomas, a lobbyist for the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police. It also could lead to more accidents by people not adequately trained, Mr. Thomas said.

As always I disagree with the “encourage more people with bad motives to carry” argument, because criminals do not care about the law.  The part about accidents happening more frequently is a valid concern.  I hope that even for their own personal safety, no one would carry a gun that they were not familiar with.

We need some guerrilla marketing campaigns as clever as this, that are pro gun.  Can you imagine the stir that would cause?

That is the slogan that appears on the latest ad from Nike where the catch phrase is “Prepare for combat”.

There are two different ads.  One that features LeBron James, and the one above which features Kobe Bryant.  The Kobe Bryant one features the controversial slogan.

Nike says that the whole leaving something in the chamber is a commonly used reference for shooting a basketball.

Seems like a pretty deliberate way to get some press considering the locker room confrontation between those two Washington Wizards players in January brought guns and the NBA into the forefront.

Bravo to Nike for not wimping out and just going ahead with using a gun reference.  They knew damn well it would cause a stir.

• A buyer has to be a resident of a state that allows them to have a grenade launcher
• The buyer needs a gun permit

40mm grenade launchers are actually considered “Destructive Devices” by the ATF and they are highly regulated.

37mm copies of them are actually flare launchers so they are not regulated at all.  People often refer to these as “grenade launchers” as well, even though there is no such thing as a 37mm grenade.

I know that I’m a watch snob, but that one just looks terrible!  What would have been wrong with using an RFID tag that you could just carry in your pocket that would communicate with the gun. The gun must take batteries too if it lights up, so there’s another thing to worry about.

I’d rather see electronics and guns stay away from each other in general, unless we are talking about railguns, those are awesome.

I don’t know about you guys, but if someone breaks into my house when I’m home I want them DEAD, not tickled by a cute soft ball with tentacles on it.

Intelligent how?  It’s smart to let some scumbag that wants to steal your stuff and/or hurt or intimidate your family survive to do it again another day?  Interesting.

I could see its use in Law enforcement for crowd control.  But the home defense thing is just laughable in my opinion.  The only clear advantage I can see is that you wouldn’t have any collateral damage with this (because there would be NO damage) if 100% of your shot didn’t hit the bad guy.

From my point of view, what happened at S&W was pure greed.  After a blockbuster year thanks to Obama, they still needed more money, and were willing breaking the law to get more of it.  Without personally knowing the inner workings of S&W, I can say with confidence that they have numerous lawyers, all of which would know better then to say bribery would be a good thing for the company.

I do agree with John on the ridiculousness of  the following:

“Let’s see, at $75,000 a year, it’s $6,250 a month per agent,” he calculates. “$6250 x 30 months = $187,500 per agent. $187,500 x 250 agents = $46,875,000 to arrest 22 people.”

Voila! That’s $46.875 million of your tax money to arrest 22 people, or more than $2.1 million each.

If FBI agents really do make $75k /year and all 250 of them were working solely on this sting, then that is a crazy amount of money.  It would definitely work out to much more than $2.1 million if you factored in expenses besides just their salaries.

Recently the Florida Highway Patrol conducted testing for a new duty pistol in Tallahassee, Fla.  One of the pistols they tested was the Gen 4 Glock.  The problem is Glock is only offering the Gen 4 in 9mm and .40 S&W, and FHP wanted a .45.  To secure the contract of “about 3000 pistols,”  Glock agreed to manufacture a special run of Gen 4 pistols chambered in .45 GAP.

I know the “purpose” of the .45 GAP is to have the ballistics of a .45 ACP, but in a smaller volume cartridge.  What’s wrong with .45 ACP though?  or even .40 for that matter?

The standard magazine capacity of the fullsize .45 GAP Glock model 37 is 10 rounds.  The Glock 21 (.45 ACP) standard magazine capacity is 13 rounds. One clear disadvantage of the G37, especially in a law enforcement environment.

According to Jeff Quinn’s article on the G37 at Gunblast.com:

The grip frame dimensions are where the two guns differ, and the smaller size of the model 37 does indeed offer improved ergonomics for those who prefer the feel of the medium frame Glocks. A comparison of the critical dimensions are as follows:

Why exactly does Florida need/want the .45 GAP though?  Have they had failures in stopping bad guys with .40 or .45?  Are there a bunch of new officers with small hands?

Coming from the Beretta 96, one would think that Florida Highway Patrol would be used to a large grip circumference, and that a Glock 22 or Glock 21 wouldn’t be hard to get used to.

Maybe is it an Elitism thing, where they want to brag to everyone that Glock custom made them a new model?

I would hate to see the bill for the cost of 3000 custom Glocks.  I’m sure Florida tax payers would also cringe, especially knowing there are at least 2 other perfectly great off the self models that their highway patrol could be carrying.

Maybe someday this .45 GAP cardridge will catch on.  Glock sure pushes it in every issue of Glock Annual.

I definitely have not noticed .45 GAP ammo at any of the gun stores I frequent, though maybe that’s due to the large amount of dust that likely collected on the box, making it unreadable.

In 2007 the ATF decided the shoestring alone was not a machine gun.  It was only considered one when added to a semi automatic rifle in order to increase its rate of fire:

Thank god they reversed their 2004 ruling.  It would have been pretty difficult to prosecute the entire shoe wearing population of the United States for constructive possession of a machine gun.

The first picture in this post is allegedly a “registered” shoe string, that the owner paid to be able to use legally.  That metallic tag apparently has a serial # on it.

This raises a couple of questions in my mind…

1. Why is the ATF so specific of the type of string used?
2. Why is the ATF so specific with the length of the shoestring?

I wonder what would happen if someone was caught using a 13 inch piece of fishing line?  I suppose since it still would increase the rate of fire, it would be deemed a machine gun no matter what type of string or length.

Those of you that frequent the gun forums will know what I’m talking about.

SayUncle points out a recent post on the SubGuns forum where one of the guys asks if hes paranoid or not, to think that owning one of these Tipton brand “Patch Catcher” devices could be considered intent to manufacture a suppressor.

Attach it to the end of the muzzle of any gun. Screw an empty water or soda bottle into the threaded end. Dirty patches and solvent are safely and cleanly contained. Then just toss the bottle!

In my opinion, just having the product “as is” and using it to catch patches would never be considered intent.

I’d say it would be a completely different story though if you were caught shooting with the patch catcher on, and a bottle attached.  Worse yet, if you were caught with the patch catcher and a bottle that had something that looked like it had baffling, spacers, wipes etc.. I think it would be safe to say you would be in a load of trouble.

There are quite a few videos on YouTube of people making plastic bottle suppressors and using them on their 22LR.  It’s hard to tell with background noise and crappy cameras if the sound is actually being suppressed.  I wouldn’t want to take any chances though.

Tipton patch catcher on Sportsmans Guide – HERE

It started with some inspiration from the video game “Army Of Two”.
The main characters use weapons equipped with shields.
I thought these gun-shields were an innovative, if not entirely practical, idea.

The functional components: A railed AR, Havoc 37mm Flare Launcher, Beta C-Mag

Extra components: Molded plastic grip with horizontal & vertical gripping points.

After having completed the above, I thought adding a stowable bipod would be a nice feature.
Before long, that idea changed to giving it vehicle-mounted capability.
Mounting via the rear hitch receiver, it has a vertically adjustable pedestal.
I went the quick route, not fabricating a true pintle/cradle or T&E.
The inner pedestal tube allows 360 degrees of horizontal traverse.
Elevation is from horizontal to vertical, but with no adjustable/locking elevating arc bracket.

Who likes picking up brass?
I added a 50cal ammo can/cradle to catch ejected shells and a 3” ABS plastic chute to direct them from the weapon into the ammo can.
Wearing a respirator, I heat-formed the ABS to better interface with the ejection port and clear the C-mag.

The fact it is made out of mild steel means that it wont effectively stop very many calibers.  The design could easily be transferred to a harder steel though.

I definitely recommend reading the full article.  It has a couple other gun related anecdotes.

Most of the time, travelers are on the short-end of TSA regulations. In this instance, however, you can use travel rules to your advantage. If you’re traveling with equipment you would prefer locked up and watched more closely than your run of the mill luggage, you can pack a firearm with the equipment or luggage.

Whether or not you own an actual firearm isn’t important—the TSA considers a starter pistol a firearm, and it must be checked in and secured properly.

Something to consider.  It sounds like it just might work!

Sandy Banks from the L.A. Times is gearing up for column this Saturday on America’s fascination with guns.

This initial article, Do you love your gun? Tell me why has a bit of a negative feel to it considering it is mainly about the recent NBA incident.  Though there is a positive and optimistic feel to it:

I discovered that I’m a pretty good shot. That there is something thrilling about holding a gun. And that firing real bullets is nothing like playing Halo.

I don’t think guns are evil, but I’m trying to figure out the fascination with them for Saturday’s column. I’d like to hear from gun owners. Why do you love your guns?

I respect Ms. Banks for giving shooting a try and keeping an open mind.  I am optimistic that the article on Saturday will not make us look like a bunch of right wing extremists.  I believe she will find that people love their guns because they are a means for self defense, and because shooting is a fun hobby where you can enjoy the outdoors and time with friends and family.

We will see, come Saturday.  Don’t let us down Sandy.

I actually thought the cost would have been much lower.  A bulk price of $800 seems very steep.  I suppose these are not comparable to your average low end AR-15 though.

shot this with a Casio EX-F1 of my shooting my Browning 12 Gauge shotgun. The clips that are at the 4:5 aspect ratio were taken at 300fps. The other clips were filmed at 600fps. All of the footage is raw, no color grading/image adjustment was added. Sadly, the sun was on the left side of the gun, so everything on the right side is in shadow. I couldn’t turn my gun around and shoot the other way though.

Some of my thoughts on Digital SLRs:

The picture on the right, is of the camera that was used to take the footage.  Pretty interesting how it is a Digital SLR and not a conventional video camera.

From some recent “behind the scenes” footage I have seen, it seems that a lot of music videos are now being filmed with digital SLRs.  They offer manual focus, a plethora of manual adjustment, and high resolution, for much cheaper then you could get a conventional video camera with comparable features.  It even comes with a beautiful lens compared to most lenses you would get with video cameras in the same price range.

Figured it’d be a fun project, I made some changes, as I can use a mill, so the whole segmented bolt thing was unneeded. I got my dad to fold the receiver and weld on the mag well so I’d be all legal and such. It uses sten mags, has a modified AK fire control group, a luger barrel with a ring in it from a barrel wrench (I got it free at a gunshow), a fixed extractor, and a section of arc welding electrode as a firing pin.

Combined Ballistic Identification System

A system where the shell casing of a bullet, (or brass) from a fired round is supplied by a gun manufacturer in an approved container shipped with a new handgun that is shipped to the NY State Police when the gun is sold or if the new handgun is shipped to the Federal Firearms License holder, the FFL takes the gun to the State Police Lab to be test fired and the lab keeps the shell casing and the fired bullet.

• The shell casing is scanned into a computer data base to be compared against shell casing recovered from a crime location.
• This program has has NO success in NY while costing $4,000,000 to start and an estimated $4,000,000 a year to maintain or an average cost of about $200 per legal gun.
• CoBIS only collects information from legal guns that are new and have not been linked to a crime and the size of the data base in New York alone is in 10s of thousands of guns and will, within the first 3 years included almost 66,000 data files with almost 22,000 new handguns being added each year. Questions:

1. This program is been around for 8 years and has had no success… so why is it still sucking up millions of tax payers money?
2. Does the shell casing always has to be matched to striations (marks from the guns rifling) on a bullet found lodged in something at the scene, and both of those tied back to the gun?  Or is it considered enough evidence if just two out of three are available?
3. Why would someone that is legally buying a gun want to take the risk of being in a database such as CoBIS?
4. Should we all take collecting our own brass at the range a lot more seriously if systems like this are going to be used to assign guilt?
5. Doesn’t the firing pin, and barrel rifling slightly change over time with normal wear?  How is this taken into account?
6. We know that criminals can pick up their casings at a scene, modify the rifling of the gun, modify the firing pin to produce a different imprint.  So why have a costly system that is rendered useless if even one of those happens?
7. Since New York isn’t an impenetrable fortress, where nothing can get in or out. What use is this database if a criminal can just bring in a gun from another state to commit a crime?

This guy sets out to prove whether or not grabbing the slide of an auto pistol in a close quarters gun fight would disable the gun by causing it not to cycle.

It takes four and a half minutes, some sarcasm,  humor, and blood.  And the result? It is proven that you can in fact cause a gun not to cycle by grabbing the slide when a round is fired.

Definitely good to know, because it would sure beat getting shot… I don’t think I’ll be trying this any time soon though.

From what I see in my stats, there are quite a few of you that follow my blog using the RSS Feed.

For those that don’t know what RSS is, it stands for “Really Simple Syndication”, and it is a really lightweight way to view my blog content from your computer, cellphone, iPod, etc…

It is definitely not as pretty as coming to the actual blog, because the formatting is very minimal, and the way the pictures are displayed may not be optimal.  Some users may prefer it though, for various reasons.

Readers that were using RSS before, when I just provided the article summary, will be able to enjoy the updated feed now automatically.

I am hoping that providing a full content RSS feed comes with an increase in readership and interaction.

I was the white guy with the black Burrberry jacket that you demanded I hand over shortly after you pulled the knife on me and my girlfriend. You also asked for my girlfriend’s purse and earrings. I hope you somehow come across this message. I’d like to apologize.

I didn’t expect you to crap your pants when I drew my pistol after you took my jacket. Truth is, I was wearing the jacket for a reason that evening, and it wasn’t that cold outside. You see, my girlfriend had just bought me that Kimber 1911 . 45 ACP pistol for Christmas, and we had just picked up a shoulder holster for it that evening. Beautiful pistol, eh? It’s a very intimidating weapon when pointed at your head, isn’t it?

I know it probably wasn’t a great deal of fun walking back to wherever you’d come from with that brown sludge flopping about in your pants. I’m sure it was even worse since you also ended up leaving your shoes, cellphone, and wallet with me. I couldn’t have you calling up any of your buddies to come help you try to mug us again. I took the liberty of calling your mother, or “Momma” as you had her listed in your cell, and explaining to her your situation. I also bought myself some gas on your card. I gave your shoes to one of the homeless guys over by Vinnie Van Go Go’s, along with all of the cash in your wallet, then I threw the wallet itself in a dumpster.

I called a bunch of phone sex numbers from your cell. They’ll be on your bill in case you’d like to know which ones. Alltel recently shut down the line, and I’ve only had the phone for a little over a day now, so I don’t know what’s going on with that. I hope they haven’t permanently cut off your service. I was about to make some threatening phone calls to the DA’s office with it. Oh well.

So, about your pants. I know that I was a little rough on you when you did this whole attempted mugging thing, so I’d like to make it up to you. What you are looking at is a weapon platform that can shoot around corners with the aid of a hinged receiver, video camera, and monitor.  This particular model is fitted with a stuffed cat in order to disguise it as a weapon.

I didn’t take pictures of the shooter out of respect for their privacy.. but his hands/arms were injured pretty badly. He was obviously in tremendous pain as he and his buddies waited quite a while for paramedics. Are paramedics/EMTs supposed to take their sweet time when walking onsite?

Anyhow.. I was told that the shooter(s) often times used a hammer to close the bolt. Feel sorry for the pain and damage the shooter had to endure.. but that’s the potential consequence of improper reloading and firearm use. (Source)

Judging by the pictures, there appears to be no damage forward of the chamber. It is probably an “out of battery discharge” meaning that the round somehow discharged before it was fully chambered.  There appears to be some sort of damage 1/2 way down the buffer tube, but I assume that it is probably from the buffer spring or weight when the Kaboom happened.

As some of you know, I am not a huge fan of putting a .50 in the AR platform.  I am not saying it can’t handle the recoil and doesn’t work flawlessly for lots of people.  I just personally am not comfortable using a platform which was developed for a significantly lower powered round with such a beast.

The weapon will recoil backwards and to the weak side of the grip.  This sideways motion can move the weapon off the target.  It is helpful to tilt the weapon to the weak side from 45 to 90 degrees (it will vary with the shooter).  The recoil-induced motion will then more nearly stay within the target outline.

Anyone have a scan of the original training manual, or any other manual to verify this?

I caught a glimpse of an IPSC patch a couple places in the video. I don’t know if this in the U.S. or not.

That kid can sure handle a .45 without any issue though. I wonder how he scored?
