Very cool idea, and setup.  Seems like the software and hardware could use a bit of work when it comes to stability, speed, and accurate targeting… judging by the company’s website, the programmer is hard at work on software upgrades.

The total cost for this rig (minus the laptop and gun) is $250

My only question is, how long until someone pops a real gun into that rig and causes some major damage?

Seems like a huge liability considering the way you fire a toy gun and a real gun is pretty much identical.  The only thing that would likely need to be upgraded is the strength of the turret, because of the increased recoil it would need to withstand.

If you buy one of these please don’t hook it up to a computer labeled “HAL 9000″

Following up on the prior article I wrote today, Utah Valley University – Open Carry Incident, I decided to email Nick Moyes.  He got back to me with the following:

Trolley Square, Utah, Virginia Tech, Columbine, Northern Illinois University, University of Alabama, University of South Florida, Dawson College: Montreal, Canada, Fort Hood, and Ohio State University just yesterday.

For some reason, mass shootings like to occur on college campuses and other “Gun Free Zones”. Perhaps it is because bad people go to where they know they will have the least resistance in carrying out their diabolical plans. I believe this to hold true from a petty thief all the way up to a fascist dictator.

I did not break any laws nor did I disrupt school activities as is evident from the videos I recorded. A student called in to campus police and asked if I was legally allowed to carry a gun. The student did not call in panic or to report a crime, it was simply a question, and I believe it should have been handled as such.

When the officers approached me and I realized that it was not going to be a simple check to see if I had a Concealed Firearm Permit, and I when I realized that it was going to be my word and Utah law against the opinions of two law enforcement officers, I pulled out my iPhone and pressed record. I did so, not to make the officers look unintelligent but to have a personal record of the incident. I have been open carrying for a long time, well before I had a CFP, as it was and is allowed in the State of Utah. I do not believe that the gun laws of Utah and the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution are no longer applicable to me while attending my accounting classes. I refuse to be a victim. There is not a uniformed officer outside of each of my classrooms, nor do I expect there to be. It is not their duty legally or otherwise to protect me, I am the only one responsible for me.

I have never open carried to make a point, to be “cool”, or because I have some sort of “Napoleon complex”. Those that know me, know that this has never been the case. I choose to open carry because I am legally able to do so and because it simply works better for me.

I ALWAYS go about open carrying in a quiet, dignified, and polite manner. I am always respectful of those around me who have never seen a gun before, by being approachable to have a conversation about Utah gun laws, to talk about why I choose to carry, and talk about the responsibility that goes along with carrying. People that know me and attend classes with me repeatedly thank me for carrying in their classrooms and for being willing and able to carry a gun at my side. It just sits there, it does not move. I do not remove it from its holster; I do not touch it. It is just an object that sits discreetly by my side.

And that is where my gun stays; unless I am, or God forbid my fellow classmates, are ever in danger of losing our lives at the hand of another who wishes to take our lives before law enforcement can arrive. I will refer you back to the growing list of colleges that have to deal with this kind of tragedy. I am not paranoid, simply aware of my responsibility, and mine only, to protect myself. I carry a gun as a safety precaution, just like wearing a seat belt in a moving car. Please think about all of the parallels that are applicable to that analogy.

Thank you to those that have an open mind and understand this logical approach. I am not an activist nor did I intend for this to go public beyond my campus or utahconcealedcarry.com.

This has not been easy to handle and I sincerely thank those who are supporting me and thank you to all of those who also carry legally and quietly everyday. God bless you.

I think it is great that Nick was able to get his iPhone out and record the video so we could actually see what happened, rather than just hearing about it 2nd hand.  I think everyone that carries, both openly or concealed, should have some sort of recording device on them (preferebly both video and audio) in order to document any incidents that occur.

Anyone have any comments? Or a similar story to share?

Mean looking little guy!

OREM, Utah – A Utah Valley University student says he is within his rights openly displaying a gun while carrying a concealed gun permit, even while on campus. And that is what student Nick Moyes did Friday morning when he was stopped by the campus police and was told to put the gun away. As president of UVU’s Republican Club, Moyes was hanging posters for an event when he was detained.

I honestly don’t think Nick could have handled himself better.  He was polite, he knew the law, asked intelligent questions, and stuck to his beliefs.

It’s stories like this that I find really irritating.  If open carry on campus in Utah is legal according to the law, then why did this incident ever happen?  I don’t care if some of the students, or the police, don’t feel comfortable that someone without a uniform has a gun.  Nick Moyes was doing nothing wrong and should not have been harassed.  If you go to a university in Utah and you don’t like Utah state law, then I suggest looking into attending university in one of 49 of our other states.  As far as I am concerned, same goes if you are a police officer in Utah.  If you aren’t interested in enforcing the law AS WRITTEN, then that is not the job for you.

I say this again and again, but there NEEDS to be some accountability in law enforcement when it comes to situations like this.  A police officer should not be able to harass someone for doing something within the limits of the law.

Thank god for good trigger control, on behalf of the guy that got knocked over.  At 15 seconds he muzzle sweeps his entire team before he gets up and joins them.

It was pretty awesome when just as the SUV was driving away to yank the wall off, a lady opened the door, only to have it slam shut and hit the ground with the entire wall a second later.

I didn’t want to set aside 15 hours of my time yesterday to watch it, but judging by the winners list, The Hurt Locker really swept the show.

I have not seen the movie yet, but I plan on watching it very soon.  I avoided it up until now because I heard from a lot of people that it was annoyingly inaccurate.  I seem to enjoy other inaccurate movies anyway, so I’m not sure why I chose to listen to people and avoid this one up until now.

There are a few different versions of the movie poster.  I found the one I inserted in this article especially chilling.

Any of you guys that have seen this movie, have an opinion on it?

Fabricated by Steve’s Welding here in Battle Creek Michigan. He said the project took about 4 months in his spare time. It’s all steel and wood. there is 4 feet of concrete in the ground and an internal post through the grip frame. The hammer is checkered, and the back of the grip is evenly ribbed.

I can’t tell from the pictures whether or not the mail goes in the business end of the 1911, but I am assuming it does.

I don’t know how much Steve’s welding would charge for one of those, but judging by the amazing detail it wouldn’t be cheap. I wonder if he could make me a Glock one? *Insert exploding mail jokes here*

Sure beats their old mailbox!  Judging by the first 2 pictures the old mailbox is still there, but probably no longer in use.

Getting kicked and pushed around to simulate actual conditions?

Also, that would be so irritating having someone fire blanks (I’m assuming they are blanks) off right near your head.

If you were actually getting treated that way in real life, I think it would be safe to say that it would be from the enemy (not your own guys), and you would be disarmed.

Anyone have more info on training like this?  Is it widely practiced?

I was thinking some more about that recent ATF airsoft seizure and came up with the following…

For your information, per provisions of the Gun Control Act (GCA) of 1968, 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44, an unlicensed individual may make a “firearm” as defined in the GCA for his own personal use, but not for sale or distribution.

The GCA, 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(3), defines the term “firearm” to include the following:

… (A) any weapon (including a starter gun) which will or is designed to or may be readily converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive: (B) the frame or receiver of any such weapon; (C) any firearm muffler or silencer; or (D) any destructive device. Such term does not include an antique firearm.

Another paragraph of interest…

Individuals manufacturing sporting-type firearms for their own use need not hold Federal Firearms Licenses (FFLs). However, we suggest that the manufacturer at least identify the firearm with a serial number as a safeguard in the event that the firearm is lost or stolen. Also, the firearm should be identified as required in 27 CFR 478.92 if it is sold or otherwise lawfully transferred in the future.

So… According to the ATF’s citations of the Gun Control Act and U.S. Code, you can make your own firearm and you do not need a FFL.

The ATF does not specify what material you have to use, and it does not put any restriction on making a firearm out of an object that previously had another use.  Hell, if you wanted to make a firearm out of a toaster, from what I understand you definitely could.

By that rationale, if you buy an airsoft gun that “Needs Machining” to complete its transformation to fit an AR-15 lower parts kit, is it not only considered a firearm once you complete it?

If you cannot drop a lower parts kit in those airsoft receivers without any machining then I think that is a VERY good argument that they are not firearms, and should never have been confiscated.

I wouldn’t recommend trying to build one for anything other than pure entertainment and proof of concept. The fact that the gun is flying out of your sleeve means that if the trigger catches on something on the way out, the gun is going to fire.  Use a toy gun.  If you happen to not heed my warning and build one for a real gun, pleese do not conceal carry this way, because it is not safe for so many reasons.

I can see it now, you’re at a Starbucks about to hand the barista your Rewards Card and all of the sudden your Ruger LCP flys at light speed of of your sleeve.  A dozens Starbucks patrons crap their pants, you make it on to National news, the Brady campaign uses you as an example, and you go to jail and pay a huge fine.  It’s not worth it.  Your Friends will be just as impressed if you use a toy gun, and don’t take it off your property.

I guess Batman must have special New York City (Gotham City) weapon privileges because he is a celebrity.

Makes you wonder if there any checks and balances in place to ultimately discard my signature? What’s to stop some Brady goons from signing their own petition with made up names, or even more cleverly using address information out of the phone book or readily available online.  With minimal web programming skills a program could easily scrape the internet for valid addresses and automatically submit them to their little web application.  At the very minimum I find it surprising there was no zip code validation in the form;  55555 isn’t even an Arkansas zip.

I am now even less impressed by the 28,000 28,001 signatures they claim.

UPDATE: CREDO action, the company that is handling the Starbucks petition actually has zip code validation on their own site where people can sign the petition ( http://act.credoaction.com/campaign/starbucks_guns/ ).  There still isn’t any other validation.

I applaud the kindness of Diane Latiker with her “Kids off the Block” program, I think that is great that those kids have a place to go to escape gun violence.  She supports the handgun ban because she “would rather something be in place then nothing be in place”.  I’d be willing to bet that all those 200+ people that are represented in her memorial did not did at the hands of law abiding citizens.  This is one of those criminals do not care about the law type things, where it’s easy to see that banning handguns in Chicago does not make them any harder for criminals to get.  It is the regular person that needs to protect themselves from the criminals.

Although I don’t live in Chicago, I anxiously await the outcome of McDonald v. Chicago (08-1521).

A repeal of the ban would be a huge Second Amendment victory.

Looks like that might actually work!  If I had a Wii i’d definitely try it.

FRANKFORT, Kentucky –Northern Kentucky University has been awarded $10,660 from the state Law Enforcement Protection Program (LEPP) to purchase patrol rifles, Gov. Steve Beshear announced Thursday.

Hmmm… Coincidentally the ATF had $10000 worth of “easily convertible” airsoft m4’s fall into their lap.   Agency to agency transfer anyone?

Also, awesome use of “Patrol Rifles”…. It’s refreshing to not see them demonized as “Assault rifle” killing machines.  I guess it has always been this way though; In the hands of police they are “tools”, but in the hands of citizens the same view largely isn’t held by the general public.

Under the LEPP, administered by the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security (KOHS), appropriate agencies can seek financial help for certain defensive items essential in the course of their duties.

“These funds will help ensure that our law enforcement will not be out-gunned and increase security on campus,” state Sen. Katie Kratz Stine, of Southgate, said.

Damn, I’ve only been out of University a couple of years now, but it must be getting pretty rough.  All jokes aside, if this keeps the students safe from psychos then I’m all for it.  I still think allowing students to carry on campus would be a zero cost better alternative though. $10660 isn’t going to buy that many patrol rifles, especially since they will all likely be fitted with some fairly pricey optics.  I say this because I can’t see open sights being a good choice for a possible shootout around hoards of innocent students running in every direction.

In conjunction with the Kentucky State Police (KSP), KOHS derives income from sales of confiscated weapons.

Oh that’s nice! *sarcasm*   I thought confiscated weapons were either destroyed or else given back to the original owner (if they were found to be stolen).  Or does this policy vary by state and department?  My first thought is that confiscating weapons to fund department purchases doesn’t seem very ethical.

Ever since the military and law enforcement started using m16’s and m4’s produced by Colt, the company developed an elitist status because they chose largely to turn their nose up at civilian market.

Now they seem to want a piece of the market, with the new AR6720.

The fact the pricing for the Colt 6720 is being based on serial number just goes to show that you can’t shake old habits. I don’t know if the tiered pricing was decided by Colt or by Clyde Armory (the exclusive retailer of the 6720).  The serial number in itself obviously only has extrinsic value… meaning no one really cares what it is, unless you can find someone pretentious enough that “NEEDS” a certain serial number that you possess.  Unless of course for this model, Colt doesn’t clean or calibrate their machines after the first parts are made.  I guess that would make the later ones less valuable? heheh

Here is how the pricing goes…

• The least expensive guns are serial # 400 and up – $1200
• Most expensive serial # 11 – $3000

#1 – #10 are apparently “spoken for”

I’ll admit $1200 isn’t TOO terrible…  like Solomon at SNAFU! mentioned though, it is still quite a bit higher than similar offerings from Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, Armalite etc…

I don’t ever like telling people what to do with their money, but in my opinion if you even pay $50 more for a #300 to #399 serial you’re making a big mistake. No matter what, you are better off buying a different brand name AR-15 such as the ones mentioned above, and spending the left over money on ammo or a red dot optic.

TACOMA, Wash. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized a shipment of 30 machine guns that arrived in an ocean container at the Tacoma Seaport last October.

Officials say the shipment of M-4 automatic rifles, manifested only as “Toys and Parts,” was valued at nearly $10,000 and was shipped from a manufacturer in Taiwan.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms found that the rifles were tooled to shoot plastic balls, but replacement of internal components with original machine gun components would render the rifles capable of firing live ammunition.

“These rifles could have had far-reaching and potentially devastating ramifications if they had gotten into the hands of individuals who wanted to do harm in the American population,” said Customs and Border Protection Area Port Director, Rolando Suliveras, Jr. “This was a good interception by our officers.”

The guns will be destroyed.

Special agent Kelven Crenshaw has a bit of trouble with the magazine at 1:18   I guess they only teach the operation of the m4 platform in “extra” special agent school.

Interesting info from the company who got their guns seized, AirsoftOutletNW:

Now we at Airsoft Outlet Northwest, being the rational individuals we are, went out and had a gunsmith check the true compatibility of these replicas and found the following information:

• The WE TTI M4’s lack any sort of functional gas tube which is integral to an AR15’s operation
• The upper receiver of an AR15 fits onto the lower of the WE TTI M4
• The stock trigger pack in the WE TTI cannot strike the firing pin of a AR15 bolt
• The body of the WE TTI lower is several mils thinner than an AR15 lower, and shims would be needed for any AR trigger pack to work
• The trigger pack of an AR15 appears to be able to fit onto the lower receiver of a WE TTI M4, one of the AR15 trigger pack retaining pins is impossible to insert without major modification, and the hammer isn’t operable with the WE TTI lower.

The full article, Airsoft: An Industry Without Standard, is actually a really good read if you have the time, regardless of whether or not you are into airsoft.

The only real issue I would say may exist, is if you could put a REAL upper on an airsoft lowers and have it fire, either fully automatic or semi automatic.  The lower receiver of a M4/M-16/AR-15 is not subjected to any extreme pressures when a round is fired, so as long as the material the airsoft replica was made out of is semi rigid, it would likely hold up for a while at least.  That said, I highly doubt that any of the airsoft lowers would be able to accept a REAL upper, and fire without any modification.  Although the whole airsoft industry thrives on authenticity, it is not in their best interest to get attention like this, which is why I doubt the parts are exactly 1:1 interchangeable.

Basically, if the ATF claims these airsoft guns can be easily converted into real guns, they should just demonstrate the conversion, and put a couple of magazines through it.  There needs to be some accountability and burden of proof placed on these government organizations.

Those of you (in most states) that have bought a new Glock might recognize the following picture as the envelope and casings from 2 spent rounds that are included:

Their are some states that require the two casings to be retained by law enforcement and entered into a database as a way to fingerprint your gun.  I talked about the failure of one of these ballistic identification systems in in New York in a prior article (HERE).

Everything looks normal… A CCI Blazer .45 caliber aluminum cartridge casing.  Good looking primer strike.  The round obviously fired.

But wait!  What the heck happened to the side of the casing?

Looks like a blow out!

Sure enough, it goes right through.

CCI Blazer aluminum is definitely one of the cheapest lines of ammunition you can buy.  I’ve put many boxes of it through my Glock since without incident, but it definitely doesn’t inspire confidence when one of the two rounds that Glock included are blown out.  I’m assuming the wall of the casing was incredibly thin, or else bent in at that point causing it to expand and blow through when fired.

I suppose the money saved by using CCI Blazer aluminum over a cartridge with a brass casing ends up saving Glock a lot of money over all the guns they sell.

You gotta love the transitions from standing to prone, and the awesome forward and lateral rolls.   This whole video reminds me of Ice Capades.

The tags in the video suggest that its Russian Spetsnaz (Russian Special Forces) training.  Those guys definitely have some interesting methods, to say the least.

One thing I found very odd was the opening scene when the shooter has their finger on the trigger during the magazine change.  Then proceeds to rack the slide with their finger still on the trigger.

Hopefully if we keep on top of them, they will take due diligence seriously and start getting their facts and terminology correct on a regular basis.

Back on July 1st, 2009 a 30-year-old man distraught over a divorce was booked on suspicion of murder after he walked into a Simi Valley, CA dental office and allegedly shot and killed his wife and wounded three others.

Jamie Peredes allegedly walked into the office and began firing an SKS semiautomatic assault rifle.

One of the other ladies that was working there (Lydia Carranza) managed to survive a gunshot to the chest.  According to the recent story on NBC L.A. the bullet entered her breast and deflated the implant.  The bullet fragments were millimeters away from her heart and her vital organs.

According to Wikipedia, Breast implants are either filled with saline or silicon gel.  Although it sounds unbelievable that a sack full of a liquid similar to water could stop a 7.62×39mm round, if you have ever shot at bottles of water you know how it can slow down a bullet, and destroy the integrity of it.

I believe this a lot more than the bullet proof fat story from a few days ago.  If the gunman indeed carried out the shooting with an SKS, Due to the high energy of the round, I would imagine that Lydia Carranza was either quite a distance away from the shooter, or even got hit due to a ricochet or another indirect method.  It seems improbable that she would have lived if it was a direct hit at close range.  Who knows though… stranger things have happened.

Ten years ago, John was involved in a near-fatal motorcycle wreck, leaving him 95 percent blind.  While some people may see John’s blindness as a handicap, through these doors he’s just another one of the guys.

For those of you that are wondering, yes Brunswick Corporation is the same one that still exists today making Bowling, Billiards, Marine, related products.  I can’t seem to find any mention of a defense division on the company website, so I’m assuming they got out of that business.

Why did it not catch on? If I had to guess I’d say it is mainly due to the bulkiness and weight of the rockets themselves.

A surprisingly negative and stereotypical “crib sheet” summary of the New York Times article at over at Vanity Fair.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – A Florida woman said her love handles saved her life when she was shot entering an Atlantic City bar. Samantha Lynn Frazier said she heard two pops when she walked into Herman’s Place early Saturday. The 35-year-old then felt pain and saw blood on her hand after she grabbed her left side. Atlantic City police said Frazier was an innocent bystander.

Frazier told The Press of Atlantic City that ‘I could have been dead. They said my love handles saved my life.”

I don’t know who “they” are, but if she means doctors, I highly doubt any of them told her that the fact she had love handles actually saved her life.  Muscle is far more dense than fat, so having less fat and more muscle would have actually been even better at stopping a bullet.

Also, I highly doubt she was shot with anything but a mouse caliber and probably not a direct hit either.  My guess is that she got grazed, because the bullet wasn’t intended for her in the first place.

Frazier also told the newspaper that she had been “hollering” that she wanted to lose weight. She now said “I want to be as big as I can if it’s going to stop a bullet.”

Great perpetuation of a stereotype Associated Press, to print that she was “hollering” in quotations.  That made me LOL

Samantha wants to be as big as she can now to stop a bullet?  I’d suggest the opposite, and start working out and trimming down… that way she would be less of a target.  Another con of trying to be as “big as you can” is the health aspect… even if you think that will save you from bullets, how is it going to save you from dying prematurely from heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other diseases associated with obesity.

Samantha, please think this one through before you start eating McDonalds 5 times a day to stop bullets.

I got my new mouse gun, a single-shot Nerf Secret Strike AS-1. Paid $2.99 (no background check required). The fit and finish are pretty nice overall, except for a bit of sprue in a couple of spots along the mold lines, but that cleans up easily with a razor blade.

It came with two darts, so I bought an extra pack of 36 for $5.99. A pack of ammo costs more than the gun. Go figure.

The size is pretty compact, fits easily in the hand…

It has a belt clip, but I’m going to remove it because I have no need for it. The trigger is a button on top you push down with your thumb…

The pump is under the barrel. The barrel’s huge bore would be pretty intimidating to a bad guy…

I shot it over a sandbag rest at 5 yards, using Nerf hollow point suction darts. Other than one flier (I flinched on that one), it presented a pretty respectable group, more than adequate for close-range self defense…

You can give it from two to five pumps for regular range practice, but I gave it the recommended maximum of seven pumps to test accuracy at +p velocities. Despite the gun’s light weight, recoil is negligible.

I think the claimed factory ballistics are a bit optimistic. I found the maximum effective range is about twenty feet with a tail wind. But that’s fine, since this gun is really only intended for those last-ditch “Oh ****, my gun jammed” moments anyway. But if you want to do some internal modifications, you might get another ten feet out of it.

The trigger button is smooth and consistent and not heavy at all. In my opinion, it really doesn’t need a trigger job to lighten the push.

It’s light enough that it should carry well in an ankle holster, but I intend to use it for pocket carry. I just need to find a good pocket holster for it. Maybe Desantis makes something that will fit it, I’ll check their website. Great for summer carry, too. It will be my constant companion now as a back-up to my G30. I wouldn’t recommend it as a primary defensive gun, but it would give an attacker a rude surprise when your .45 fails to stop him and he thinks you’re out of ammo.

I give Nerf a big thumbs-up on this one, they designed an awesome carry piece. Since it’s so compact and light weight, I’m thinking of getting another one as a back-up back-up, just in case the air valve in the first back-up gun gives out at the worst possible moment. If there’s one thing I learned in the Cub Scouts before they kicked me out for bad behavior, it’s to be prepared.

People walking everywhere. people shooting in every direction, guns being passed around freely, kids everywhere… I wonder how many people get injured per year from celebrations such as this?

When I saw the guy at 3:25 with the umbrella I was expecting some sort of batman’s penguin style gun… but sadly my hopes turned to disappointment when I realized it simply started to rain.

These guys hold their guns weird.  Looks like most of them shoot with a half assed limp wristed grip.  Also, most of them couldn’t maintain a safe muzzle direction to save their life.

Is there a 5 round magazine limit in Pakistan? It seems like that is all each of them is shooting in a row.

I wonder if their is a Pakistan equivalent to the Brady center?

The law, passed by Congress in May, reverses 94 years of National Park Service policy that generally allowed visitors to transport unloaded, disassembled weapons in the trunks of their cars. It applies not only to national parks, but also to national wildlife refuges.

Critics, say there are as many potential complications as there are state and local gun laws.

David Barna, a National Park Service spokesman, said park websites are providing some guidance to visitors, but it is the responsibility of each gun owner to understand the laws of the state they are visiting.

“The single biggest threat is the situation that’s going to occur in campgrounds, where you have inexperienced people, who don’t know much about parks, who are out of their element,” Wade said. “You are sleeping under the trees and you hear a noise. You look out of the tent and see a shape and start firing.

I definitely think that is a valid concern, especially when alcohol and camping pretty much go hand in hand.  Hopefully common sense prevails though, because it would be a shame to see a sharp rise in deaths or injuries as a result of less restrictive laws.

CONNEAUT, Ohio – Michelle Pryor said early Monday morning their German shepherd Sirus began barking so she let him out and was stunned when she heard gunfire outside the home.  Sirus got shot in the chest and on the muzzle between his eyes.

It’s stories like this that make me wish I had a dog.  German shepherds are my absolute favorite.  I’d have a couple of them in a heartbeat if I had a big yard for them to stay in.

The NRA has a rule against bringing ammunition into a class, said Tom Wagner, a NRA instructor in Orlando who was not involved in Saturday’s shooting. He said the association has “no problem yanking a certification if the rules are being broken.

I’m glad to hear that guy will no longer be instructing.  There is no room for error when it comes to safety with firearms.

Once again… If the four BASIC rules of gun safety mentioned in my previous post would have been followed, this would never have happened.

If there is one person that cringes every time an incident like this surfaces in the news it would definitely be Lee Paige.  Paige was making a “drug education presentation” in April 2004 to a group of kids in Florida when he put a round from his .40 caliber Glock through his foot (or leg according to different press coverage).

“I’m the only one in this room professional enough, that I know of, to carry this Glock .40″

Those words, and the couple of seconds following them, will live forever on the internet.

I don’t agree with incidents like these being called “Accidental discharges” (AD).  When it is human error that causes them the correct term is “Negligent Discharge” (ND).

Too bad there wasn’t a video of the NRA instructor shooting the student.  That way he could try and sue the NRA for embarrassing him like Lee Paige tried on the DEA.

The Desert Eagle just doesn’t do it for me.  It’s bulky, incredibly heavy, and very expensive.  Yea you can get it in the big boy .50AE caliber, but I don’t really see the purpose of that either.  You are supposed to be using your handgun as a first method of defense, or as they say to “get to your rifle”.  I know it’s a good gun, but I just think that there are better options for most applications.

Salt Lake City, UT – Sixteen-year-old Maile Fine was pronounced dead at Intermountain Medical Center Thursday after an apparent joke about Russian Roulette went horribly wrong.

Though friends with him at the time said he had taken the bullets out of the gun, when Fine pointed it at his head and pulled the trigger the firearm went off and the bullet struck him.

The 4 basic rules of gun safety as advocated by the late Marine Lt. Col. Jeff Cooper can not be stressed enough:

1. All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. (For those who insist that this particular gun is unloaded, see Rule 1.)
3. Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target. This is the Golden Rule. Its violation is directly responsible for about 60 percent of inadvertent discharges.
4. Identify your target, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you have not positively identified.

It’s just not worth taking the risk and violating any of those points.

Pretty spry for a 67 year old.   Good to see seniors not putting up with crap like that.

From what Bruso said in the interview, he very well might carry a pistol on him at all times.  If he had it on him during this incident, he definitely exercised good judgment in not using it.

His message at the end of the video: “Don’t F**K with old senior citizens, they will surprise you once and a while.”

This video has been going around the blog world lately and people are saying “Bill O’Reilly supports gun confiscations during weather emergencies OMG OMG WTF”.  Not once does he say that in the video,  he simply asks questions that would imply he supports the idea.

I have watched the video twice now, it it looks to me like he is just being his regular antagonist shit disturbing self.

At the very least I’d like to see higher caliber guns used, longer distances, and even a “production” rifles event, where modified rifles are not allowed.

Watching someone in spandex shoot 50m with an alien looking .22LR does not interest me even the slightest.

The book was published in 1909, so maybe chicken winging was embraced back then?

This police officer from Marble Falls, TX must have studied a copy of the book as part of her training.

Since the detachable box magazine was not widely used back in 1909, I’m sure the tip on putting your magazine in backwards was picked up by the officer from another source.

It’s kind of hard to read the list on the graphic, so I retyped it:

1. Don’t be a hero: Accept the situation and prepare to wait.
2. Do what you’re told – and remember: the first 45 minutes are the most dangerous.
3. Don’t speak unless spoken to, and then only when necessary
4. Get comfortable, but never turn your back on your captor
5. Don’t make suggestions: you’ll be blamed if the idea goes wrong.
6. Don’t try to escape, unless your sure you’ll succeed and even then think twice.
7. Let medical needs be known – but in a matter-of-fact way.
8. Be observant: memorize captors’ names, identifying marks etc…
9. Answer only “yes” or “no” if you end up fielding questions from authorities
10. Signal the police if your captors are listening in on the line.
11. Don’t be argumentative: treat your captors like royalty.
12. Hit the floor: when help comes, stay down with your hands on your head.

Probably all good advice if you are willing to take the chance of dying at the hands of your captor.  Often though, you are going to have some pissed off captors on your hands once they figure out they are not getting all that they demand.  This has the potential to turn sour real quick and that’s when hostages start disappearing.

This is why I offer then 2 step solution to dealing with captors:

I know some of you are going to jump on me saying its not feasible in all situations, and I agree.   I’d rather take responsibility for my own life, rather than rolling the dice on whether or not Law Enforcement is going to surgically remove the scumbags before innocent people start dying.

179 Department of Homeland Security weapons were lost between 2006 and 2008 — some falling into the hands of criminals — after officers left them in restrooms, vehicles and other public places, according to an inspector general report.  This is mainly because officers did not properly secure them.

Unfortunately this type of loss is always going to happen.  DHS is a huge agency, which makes me wonder exactly what percentage 180 guns equates to?  Do other large agencies such as the FBI have a similar number of guns lost every year?

I am assuming there were no repercussions at all for officers that lost their firearms, because according to the article DHS doesn’t even have a policy in place regarding the control of firearms.

According to wikipedia, the Bombardier Global Express goes for $45 million.  That’s a lot of Glocks!  I imagine most people that spend $45million on a plane probably spend another couple million at least upgrading it.

This conversion was done on a Finnish m27 in order to increase the rifle’s capacity from 5 to 20 rounds.  There is no information provided on whether the magazine is detachable.

Two things immediately struck me as odd:

1. It is being marketed as a good gun for home defense
2. The ad is targeting women

Maybe FN Herstal re-thought this advertisement after it was printed, because  http://www.fnhusa.com/FIVESEVENhomedefense6 does not go to any sort of relevant product page.

I don’t consider myself a ballistics expert by any means, but just like every other cartridge, I believe 5.7×28mm has its purpose.  In my opinion, close range home defense is not one of them.  I’d much rather have a bigger and slower round (9mm, .45 etc..) for that purpose, over a tiny fast one any day.   The way I look at it, is the bigger the wound(s) you create, the faster the fight is going to be over.

There is a common misconception that all 5.7×28mm rounds will penetrate body armor.  Although there are variants of the cartridge that will, they are not available to anyone outside of law enforcement.  In January of 2005 the ATF released a letter to the public outlining the capabilities of commercially available 5.76×28mm ammo.

The only relevant reason I can see for targeting women in this ad campaign is the fact that the 5.7×28mm round has less recoil than other popular home defense rounds.  The manageable recoil would allow for more accurate follow up shots.

A 22 year old woman gets pulled over by an unmarked vehicle (2001 silver BMW).  A man not wearing a uniform approached her car and flashed what appeared to be a badge and then asked her for identification.  The woman got suspicious and asked the man to have a marked vehicle respond.  The man became uncomfortable and drove away.  The woman called the police.

Police identify 29 year old Benjamin Phillip Canon as a suspect after the woman driving identified him as the man who pulled her over.  Police set up surveillance on Cannon and arrest him at his home and allegedly find a police scanner, a strobe light, handcuffs, and a siren inside his car.  Cannon was booked in to jail, and has since posted $10000 bail.

There is an outpouring of support for him on Calguns.net, where he is treasurer and director.  In the first post on that thread Mr. Canon also claims the allegations are untrue and that he hopes this will all blow over quickly.

My Thoughts:

• I hope he is innocent, but if he isn’t then I hope he gets all he deserves.  We definitely don’t need creeps pulling women over and pretending to be cops.
• Who did he piss off to end up in a police lineup?  I find it odd that a business man would be on the sheriff’s violent crimes unit radar.  Did he have any sort of past run ins with the law for something serious?
• Although some members on Calguns would disagree, it seems to me that having all that police related equipment in his car is not going to help his claim of innocence.  I agree though, just like the media often does.. those alleged items they said Canon possessed could actually be other everyday items that they just embellished the name on to make the story more interesting.

A Manchester-by-the-Sea man who allegedly had a cache of weapons in his home told police he was preparing for Armageddon, authorities said.

Armageddon? SHTF?  OMG OMG and he had a stockpile of dried and canned goods as well? and medicine!  Last time I checked it was called “Being Prepared”

Gregory D. Girard, 45, was arrested Tuesday night for allegedly storing several tear gas grenades and explosive pepper ball projectiles. He was also charged with the illegal possession of four police batons.

Police batons are illegal devices?  Considering you can buy them off the internet and get them shipped straight to your home I highly doubt it.

In addition to the grenade-type devices, police found approximately 20 weapons, including high-powered rifles, shotguns, and handguns. All of the firearms were purchased and registered legally within the past 10 months, McKiel said.

So… why was he arrested???

Police also found a large collection of camouflage clothing, knives, bulletproof vests, helmets, and eight pairs of handcuffs in Girard’s home. They also discovered stockpiles of medicine and non-perishable foods. An illegal indoor shooting range was also found in the attic, police said.

To be fair, an indoor attic shooting range is pretty stupid (not that I wouldn’t like one with the proper ventilation and safety measures to make sure no shots go where they shouldn’t).  Sounds like it was just a makeshift one where he shot at a ballistic plate (see video below)

Yea, she calls a magazine a clip about 5 times… forgivable though in this case because of context.  I’m sure she must have got blasted for it in the comments because she locked them and corrected it in the video captions.   She is definitely pro 2nd Amendment, down to earth, and otherwise fairly knowledgeable about guns, and gun law in her state.

If she started doing more videos on guns (and shooting), I’m sure she could get a huge following.  She seems to be doing pretty well on subscribers just off her makeup videos alone, but adding more gun videos could create a niche that I am not sure yet exists on YouTube.  It might help get some more girls into shooting and guns in general!

As a direct and proximate result of Ward’s unconstutitonal actions, Embody was subjected to arrest in violation of his Fourth Amendment rights and subjected to mental anguish, humiliation and embarrassment, because, the events described in this Complaint were published widely in the Nashville area by the local news media.

If he is so embarrassed, then why does he showboat around on all the forums?

I’ll hold the constitution above personal opinion any day of the week, but if he expects to win a case like this, I bet any lawyer would have told him to keep his mouth shut, and lay low on internet forums.

In response to the news about the lawsuit filed by the owner of the AK-47 pistol, we may have to agree to disagree. I think this guy got exactly what he was asking for. Notice that I said “asking for.” I believe this guy went out with the intention and the hope of provoking a reaction from the public and a response from the authorities. Let’s not forget he was dressed in camouflage clothing. I imagine dressed in woodland camo with an AK-47 (pistol or not) slung across his body he looked more like an Afghan militia member than the upstanding, law-abiding citizen he will be portraying in court. Worth noting also is that he had painted the end of the barrel blaze orange, seemingly in an attempt to make it look like a harmless toy. At the very least I think that he demonstrated a lack of maturity and showed a sense of irresponsibility that law-abiding gun owners and gun rights activists should be ashamed of. This is not the image of gun owners I want popping into peoples’ minds when they pause to think about the second amendment.

Admittedly, whether or not he was trying to provoke a response from the authorities, and regardless of the fact that in doing so he may not have been acting in the most responsible and civilized way, it seems that nothing he did was illegal. Let’s examine that though. It seems that his weapon is legal by the slimmest of margins. The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, section 479.11, defines a pistol as:

“A weapon originally designed, made, and intended to fire a projectile (bullet) from one or more barrels when held in one hand, and having (a) a chamber(s) as an integral part(s) of, or permanently aligned with, the bore(s); and (b) a short stock designed to be gripped by one hand and at an angle to and extending below the line of the bore(s).”

It seems to me that it wouldn’t be much of a stretch to argue that his weapon was originally designed as a rifle, not a pistol, and therefore does not meet the requirements to be classified as a pistol. I know this isn’t the case, but I think this weapons classification as a pistol is a bit shaky. I have yet to see one of these things being fired from one hand either; that certainly seems improbable, and certainly not how it was intended to be fired. Its legitimacy as a pistol is, I think, questionable to begin with.

All of that aside, let’s look at why he’s filed a lawsuit. I haven’t seen the actual lawsuit, but according to the story that was linked to, his civil rights were violated by, “detaining him on Dec. 20, 2009 without probable cause and for longer than was necessary to determine he was not committing a crime.” The officer acted in good faith while performing his duties in stopping him to determine whether he was acting within the law or not. As a combat veteran infantryman, I’ve spent enough time in Afghanistan to recognize an AK-47 (or its variants) when I see one. I certainly would not have thought this to be considered a pistol by any means. He had probable cause to detain him, that’s clear. To release him without verifying the legality of a weapon that does not appear to be a pistol would have been irresponsible on the part of authorities. The only real question seems to be whether or not he was detained for an unreasonable amount of time. It seems that will be left for a judge to decide. I’ll say this though, if I were the authorities detaining him, once I determined that it was technically a pistol, he would remain detained while I determined whether or not he violated any laws by painting the end of the barrel orange to make it look like an airsoft toy. I believe that’s illegal in some jurisdictions, and I think rightfully so.

In the end I think (and hope) that this case will be dismissed; nothing awarded to the plaintiff.  I feel no sympathy for his predicament. I do, however, feel sorry for the fact that he must go through life operating with a sub-standard level of maturity, and am regretful that he feels compelled to act out in ways that bring negative attention to the firearm rights he purports to hold so dear.

Under North Carolina law, statute 14-288.7 automatically went into effect. And that law which goes into effect when there’s a state of emergency prohibits the transportation, purchase sale and possession of firearms other than on one’s own premises.

HUH? Why?  Any particular reason? such as fear of looting etc..?

One question on my mind is, how is everyone supposed to find out about this “emergency deceleration”?

My guess is that it’s broadcast on the Radio and on the TV, but since I never listen to the radio and don’t have satellite or cable, how would I find out about it?  In fact, I don’t even currently own a cell phone.  I use the internet for everything.

If there was some snow on the ground and a few fallen trees, and I thought I could make it to where I was going,  I wouldn’t hesitate to go.  Why should I have to consult numerous sources for the O.K.?  If they ever expect these notification systems to even partially work, they need to broadcast the warning across every type of communication device.

That said, no one likes being told what to do.  Especially when it involves having their rights taken away, even temporarily.

Don’t worry, it was apparently for a promo video for MTV’s video music awards.

It seems like people either love him or hate him.  I enjoy a majority of his videos, but they are INCREDIBLY long and verbose so I usually end up skipping through them.

People love to give him a rough time for a lot of different reasons which I won’t get into, but if you watch his videos you will likely find the pics below hilarious:

The above picture is poking fun as Nutnfancy’s continuous talk about “Sheepdogs”, which is a metaphor he often uses.  The picture is a photoshop of a screen shot from the famous YouTube tranny Chris Crocker’s video “Leave Britney Alone!”

The picture above I believe is a jab at Nutnfancy’s streed credit.  People often criticize his real world experience and call him a pseudo “operator”.

All I know is that he makes some interesting videos and definitely reviews a lot of cool stuff.  I really could care less about what he does for a living.

More than 50 AAFES (Army and Air Force Exchange Service) concessions serving U.S. troops in Afghanistan will be closed within 90 days under an order issued Feb. 5 by Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top U.S. commander in that war zone.  These include popular fast-food outlets like Burger King, Popeyes and Taco Bell, as well as jewelry stores, souvenir stores and new car sales outlets.

“MWR (morale, welfare and recreation) programs across the theater should be limited in scope and tailored for an expeditionary force,” McChrystal said in his order. “MWR should never be the distracter that changes the focus of the mission.”

I know what you are saying Solomon.  I just think you gotta give these guys something to look forward to when they get back to base.  If you make being on base equally as uncomfortable as outside the wire (except for being shot at), It seems to me that morale will suffer greatly, not improve.  I can’t help but feel guilty back here at home, knowing that soldiers are getting even more taken away from them, when they already have very little.

They are already far away from their friends, family, and all the comforts of home.  Risking their lives on a daily basis for surprisingly little pay, and they can’t even enjoy a burger or some fried chicken during their down time?

I understand the possibility of getting “Fat and happy” exists, like you said in your article.  But why punish the soldiers that don’t abuse their privileges?

If you ask me, those guys already sacrifice enough.  We need to do everything possible to keep them motivated.

From talking to you before in email, I know your background enables you to speak with a lot more authority on this topic than myself.  I am interested to hear what you have to say back to my response.

Very nice commercial.. really highlights the guns and the lasers well.

There is a flash of the girl’s face at 1:00 where she looks a bit too happy for someone that could have been stabbed.  Maybe she realized that she had the upper hand

Some thoughts:

• The integration of the laser into the frames (although real well done in this case), is not my preference.  I’d rather see it as an option.
• Red lasers are so last year! … Don’t they know that green is the new red? Better visibility, greater brightness, and better range with the green.
• Ambidextrous cylinder release on revolver is a great idea
• I don’t like the external non-ambidextrous thumb safety on the pistol.  I prefer safeties you don’t have to remember to disengage (ie. like the internal safeties on Glock pistols).

I know in the past SayUncle has had a number of his posts linked to by Instapundit (a hugely popular news website).  I remember being in awe of the traffic he was getting.

The Packetman saw the post on SayUncle and forwarded my link to his contact at ABC.

I can only speculate the chain of events that occurred after that, which led to my post being picked up by Instapundit.  I definitely saw a huge spike in traffic.

10414 visitors yesterday.  That is about 7000 more visitors than an average day for this blog.

Miguel Caballero makes fashionable lightweight bulletproof clothing designed for the world’s elite.

A reporter from VBS.tv goes to Bogota Colombia for a tour of their factory, and gets shot with a revolver from about 1 foot away while wearing one of their jackets.

“I shoot all my employees” says Miguel.  It’s an initiation if you are an employee.

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me, although some of it does look a bit bulky.  Any protection at all beats no protection, and that clothing would definitely save some lives.

In my previous post ABC News – How to get a grenade launcher we talked about how the media always gets their facts wrong, and time and time again manages to blow everything way out of proportion.

A new development from a frequent commenter Josh:

Regardless of all that, one of the stories I ran across said it was a 37mm Cobray grenade launcher. Obviously, 37mm is a flare, not a grenade, and the Cobray website doesn’t indicate that what they manufacture is anything other than a flare launcher. Way to go ABC. I think they might appropriately be called the “Alarmist Broadcasting Company.”

Here is the actual excerpt from the Fox News article he is referring to:

BIG difference ABC.. BIG difference.  One is a Destructive Device (40mm) and one is not (37mm).

There is no such thing as “grenades” for the 37mm.

Now I don’t look at FOX as being an authority on gun related news either, but I believe that a lot more than the crap ABC tried to tell us in that newscast.

FOX likely did mess up on this, if it was presumably an AR-15 they are referring to:

Forrest said the .223-caliber assault rifle (Bushmaster) that Woodson was carrying had a defaced serial number and had been altered to fire .50-caliber ammunition.

Altered? as in had a new upper attached to it?

Also, an AR-15 is not an assault rifle.
