I find it hard to believe that someone could make that many obvious errors in one title.

Lets break it down:

• Glock & Wesson – Well the Glock part is correct.  As far as I know Glock never collaborated with Wesson from Smith & Wesson on anything.
• 45mm – WTF?  That would be a hell of a round!
• FPO – I have no idea what that means in the context of firearms.
• Designed in 1789 – hahhaha Uhhhhh no.   Semi automatic handguns were not invented until the late 1800s.
• Designed by Colt Koch – Samuel Colt wasn’t born until 1814 and died in 1862, long before the Heckler & Koch company was founded in 1949… and as far as I know there is no one named “Colt Koch”.

I hope to god they didn’t get that information from the DEA agent.

It was at around the 1 minute mark where the camera spins around and I noticed this:

As I wrote on the screenshot I took… looks like the shot was taken at no more than 5 yards away. It’s no wonder the wad went through the screen.  I’m glad no one got hurt.  That’s a very close range to be taking a shot at something besides paper (if you ask me).

In my initial post ( Picatinny Power ) , I raised some questions I had about the system.

Howard Kent ( one of the inventors ) from Reset Inc. was nice enough to provide the answers, in addition to emailing me a lot of extra information:

1. How are the accessories getting power from the “Gold plated contact pads” that are along the rail?

The RIPR has an internal bus design drawn from our computer industry experience which provides power and data similarly to the popular USB accessories we all carry now. The entire system is armored with hard anodized Aluminum channels and then solid potted with 700+ degree compound. Pretty tough…it swims live, works frozen, et cetera.

2. Would users need to purchase some sort of adapters from you, in order to use their current weapon accessories? If so, what is the cost?

We offer a number of ways to adapt what you already have; battery door conversions and kits with dummy cells that can be restored to original function instantly, direct rail interfaces that MIL-STD heads and tailcaps screw into that eliminate the “stick light tube”…plus more; if there is a demand for a particular product, we’ll make it happen. I have to add that the “Purpose Built RIPR Accessories” are VERY small and powerful…stand by for the Nov. 1st kickoff.

3. It says the rail is powered by a “standard AA” batery pack. Does that mean there is a handfull of replacable AA batteries inside that larger pictured unit?

The Army suggested using the world class “L-91″ battery and being a “Yes, Sir!” operation we complied. The pack is Delrin with (8) L-91 (or any AA battery) and it is rated at 6v./6,000 mAh. For your techies, the Energizer manual paraphrased says: “At high load the CR-123 lasted 7 minutes, while the L-91s @3v. lasted 80 minutes…at -20 degrees the new CR-123s would not function at all, when L-91s would operate for up to 20 minutes”. So in summary; you carry fewer batteries on a mission, they last up to 8x longer in total, you have only one kind of battery, they are available worldwide, they cost a fraction of the price, et cetera…but fear not, we have Aerospace quality rechargeable battery technology, too. For a civilian version…you can’t beat never looking for CR anything ever again.

4. Can the weapon accessories still be powered with regular batteries in case of a catastrophic failure?

On the issue of catastrophic failure, the RIPR basically changes nothing on MIL-STD equipment since to do so would require extensive requal. For example, our DBAL and ATPIAL adapters replace the battery door and battery. The wise troop would keep his backup options open by dropping the original cap in his pack and taking the CRs off dead enemy soldiers who are not equipped with RIPR in the highly unlikely event of damage to the armored, electrically isolated RIPr chassis and battery holder. If the RIPR pack is damaged, you take another out of your MOLLE and toss the old one…but to ease your concerns, it takes more to damage a RIPR than the majority of accessories can stand.

5. Are batteries able to be kept within the weapon accessories while being powered by your rail?

The RIPR military developments keep all of the devices powered even when changing packs so you don’t lose night vision and other functionality. You can keep your original items (maybe a one set per squad would be enough) as mentioned above, but the hottest thing since sliced bread is the EOTech with an internal rechargeable battery…

6. What is the weight of the entire system including the battery?

Fully loaded it weighs less than a pound…the idea of SWAP-C (Improved Size, Weight, Performance & Cost) being to redistribute the weight away from the forend with purpose built devices (LDI, SureFire, Insight) and between your hands in the only dead spot on the weapon. The Rangers used to like Redi-Mags for the latter reason. As an example of weight reduction; a stick light and tube laser with mounts weigh 20-28 oz., RIPR with a 350% more powerful light and green laser weighs 20.5 ounces…already breaking even and aiding the “feel” of the weapon, plus it adds a quick change battery and powers the other accessories as well.

7. What is the MSRP?

They will kill me if I talk out of school…but it should street for less than a well known grip light people all seem to have.

So we don’t yet know the MSRP.. but from his hint I assume he is talking about the M900 Surefire series which range from $560 – $700.

It will be interesting to see what the purpose built RIPR accessories will be going selling for. It would be nice if the decreased size (no battery compartment needed) would also substantially decrease the price.  I suppose at first it will likely go the other way and cost even MORE money because  it would be considered a lower volume specialty product.  I guess we will have to wait and see.

I wish them the best of luck with the product. Looks like it has a lot of potential.

$55 gets you the adapter which is the part you register with the ATF according to the website.  The oil filter is considered the removable expansion chamber.

Pretty cool as a novelty. Unfortunately there doesn’t appear to be any videos on YouTube of people using one of these things.

It’s too bad there wasn’t more specs on how to use it, and noise reduction info on the website.

It would be funny if the same company came out with a set of EXTREME hi-rise sights especially for this application. LOL

Be prepared to get lots of attention, and questions about your Glock(s) and how much you shoot.

If you’re a guy and you decide to wear one… LOL… well be prepared to be mocked.

Interesting idea, but I still think keeping the guns discretely inside the cab is a better idea.

Also, call me crazy but having the guns point directly at the drivers back seems like an accident waiting to happen. It’s only a matter of time before someone might put a loaded rifle in that box and it gets rattled around enough, or something hits the trigger and it goes off.  Having them point out the side or the back of the truck wouldn’t really be beneficial in lots of cases either if such a discharge were to occur.

The look on the seal’s face is priceless.

As you can see in the first picture, it appears that their powered picatinny rail piggybacks your existing picitainny rail, and delivers power via that 20 round magazine looking battery on the left.

There is very little information on their website, so naturally I have some questions and concerns:

I don’t know what to think of that commercial. It’s really well done, but the fact the soldier is missing his legs, and then presumably dies after turning the TV on seems to be in poor taste.

Pretty impressive… this guy should build a coil gun using that capacitor bank.

Maybe I’m just a safety nazi, but I don’t think regular eye glasses and a poke stick is adequate for making damn sure you don’t get hurt.

If that were my setup, id be remotely detonating it from around a corner at the very least.  I also wouldn’t have the power all connect up to it while I was in the setup process.

You gotta love the sound the washer makes at around 4:30.  As far as i’m concerned it could have just as easily shot strait into his body rather than going straight up into the air… yep, WAY too risky.

Not that surprising considering the book was published in 1992. I’m sure there a lot of other good advice in that book that hasn’t been rendered obsolete.

As a 2010 office tip for women regarding self defense and removable storage media, i’d have to recommend going with breaking a CD or DVD in half and wrapping it up in some cloth or paper so you don’t cut yourself. Those things are RAZOR sharp when broken.

I haven’t seen a 5 1/4 in. or 3 1/2 in. disk since the last flea market I went to.  I don’t think I’ve seen a box from “card files” anywhere in the last couple decades.

I tell you, that smell beats the pants off BreakFree CLP. Whenever I get a whiff of CLP now all I can think of is almost passing out after an unfortunate ventilation incident where I likely lost a few million braincells.  I’m sure Hoppe’s is just as deadly in unventilated rooms, I just never had a similar bad experience with it.

Seriously, where are some seagulls when you need them most? According to one of the main pictures (left) on the hilarious looking website, the pocket is big enough to stash a 67 fl oz. ( 2 Litre ) bottle of coke. Hey, if it can do that, then maybe you could stash that mortar or AT4 you were looking for a place to hide!  You just gotta watch out you don’t bend up your loose cigarettes too much.  hahaha

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, New York City Police are very concerned:

What is also funny is that the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency apparently has an advertising policy that states ads should not appear to promote the use of firearms or advocate any violent action.

Because of that you end up with normal movie posters like this….

The one thing I find funny is that Will Ferrell and Marky Mark actually are playing cops in this movie, and are even flashing their shields on the poster. It’s not like they are dressed as thugs or otherwise.  Last time I checked San Francisco police still openly carry guns, and I’m pretty sure people aren’t bursting into tears of fear when they see one of them around.

In an interesting double standard, the SFweekly blog reports that the regular non photoshopped poster is being used on the sides of all the public transit vehicles.

If it even prevented one persons feelings from being hurt I guess they can consider it a job well done .  They better get cracking on those public transit movie posters though, god knows what will happen if they roll past some hippie hangout.

Shortly after Part 1 came out in April, I have been getting 1-2 emails per week from people telling me about the video. Rather than be rude and say “That is the most boring video I’ve ever seen” I was nice and said I’d consider posting about it.  Since it is clear the emails are going to keep coming in regarding this video I decided to write this post.

The only thing that I found slightly impressive was in Part 2 when the cannon operator was able to hit the gas filled balloon and the fluorescent light from a decent distance.  Although, in retrospect that could have been take #whoknows … so i’m pretty much back to being unimpressed.

Pretty hilarious how bad their laws are there. Most of the scenarios set out in the videos are pretty laughable and unrealistic too.

According to their promo website DropTheWeapons.org, “Picking up a gun or a knife always makes a situation worse never better.” …. Good to know! seems I learn something new every day *rolls eyes*.

And like needed another reason to never visit the UK, they have something there referred to as “Joint Enterprise“, which sounds pretty ridiculous.

There isn’t too much Will Ferrell comedy I’ve seen that I didn’t like. In fact, not too long ago I re-watched a few episodes of “Eastbound & Down” (killer show btw.. you can buy Season 1 on Amazon if you want), and was laughing at his role as “Ashley Shaffer” the white haired owner of a BMW dealership.  Danny McBride who plays the main character ”Kenny Powers” is priceless.

Got back yesterday evening.  I already miss the mountains etc…

The pic in this post is of me looking at Mt. Hood from the top of Tom, Dick, and Harry Mountain on a hike I did a few weeks ago with my sister. Pretty badass views of a handful of mountains once you reach the top.

Now I need to get down to business and start posting again…. SO much stuff to go through.  I have some things to post about from my holiday related to the topic of the blog, those will come at a later date.

Initially I planned to blog off of my netbook, but In a embarrassing rookie mistake I decided to torrent a TV show (which I don’t normally do outside of a virtual machine) and managed to get a virus. To make it even more embarrassing and textbook rookie, it was one of those fake windows update type ones.  Yea I clicked it LOL.  I keep telling myself that I might have already had the virus at that point, before I actually clicked “update”, and that the official look of it was just to fool n00bs.

As the title of the post says, I am currently in Hood River, Oregon. Let me tell you, google street view does NOT do this place (and many other places) justice.  Besides the fact that it is insanely beautiful, there are also basically no bugs, the weather is perfect (right now anyway) and I’ve been told that in winter, when it does snow it’s gone in an hour or two.  House and condo prices are surprisingly reasonable.  I am considering a move.  The gun laws here appear to be good too… Open and concealed carry are permitted (with some restrictions) and as far as I can tell there are no NFA items that are not allowed, so that is always nice.

For those that have never been to Hood River, you can see Mount Adams from pretty much everywhere.  Behind the town is Mount Hood (which is equally as impressive) and you can see it plain as day once you are higher up.  I am staying at my sister’s place, and I can see Mount Adams all the time from the front two levels, and the top of mount hood from the rear 2nd level.

Fake reCaptcha – Photoshop Tutorial For Trolling:

1. Take screenshot of the reCaptcha you are trying to troll (even type your troll words underneath before hand, for authenticity).
2. Paste it into Photoshop, zoom in on the reCaptcha and delete it or color over it with white
3. Select the type tool and change the font to “Times New Roman”, and change the style to “Bold”
4. Type your trolling word(s) then use Warp Text (Layer –> Type –>Warp Text)  to give a distorted look.  I like the style “twist”.
5. Flatten the image (Layer –> Flatten Image)
6. Add a slight blur to the text.  I prefer Gaussian (Filter –> Blur – Gaussian) or Motion blur.
7. Apply the Photocopy filter (Filter –> Sketch –> Photocopy) and even the “Graphic Pen” filter (and blur slightly for effect), Basically just fool around with the settings until you get it how you want.  You can use other filters and combinations of filters to achieve similar effects.
8. reCaptcha troll word(s) complete.

I decided to mod a Bluetooth earpiece for my phone out of a kids plastic toy gun. Now, I look forward to receiving a call from the First Lady while I’m at work. I draw the gun out of my pocket, stick the barrel in my ear (the speaker is in the business end), and pull the trigger to answer the call.

That on its own is a terrible idea.. but then I read this:

I’ve been debating on painting it to look like a real gun. (I get equally giddy and frightened by the panic that this could cause should someone not notice that the gun is a fake or should I accidentally take a call while at the bank.)

Do people actually EVER fall for this crap? I searched google for a couple of lines from the letter and it seems that there are a lot of different “from” and “reply-to” email addresses used, which tells me it is likely used to verify working email addresses.

I wonder if the actual Lawrence K. Wilson knows that a scam artist is impersonating him?

Made by Magpul fanboys obviously. If Magpul didn’t make good products I would make fun of these guys, but since they do I’d have to say it’s perfectly acceptable to buy as much Magpul as you want.

Although you can’t see the targets in the video, the guys in it definitely seem to be pretty good and familiar with their weapons. Not surprising when in the youtube comments the uploader “glin1216″ says that a majority of them in the video are Military and they attended classes occasionally.

As far as the camera they used, the description says “Shot with a Canon 5DMKII + 70-200 f/2.8 IS L”, which for video is quite similar to the Canon 7D or T2i that I perpetually lust over on this blog.

You gotta love the choice of song too.

Smyrna, GA – Residents living adjacent to buildings owned by gun manufacturer Glock Inc. are challenging the company’s request to encroach on the city’s required stream buffer necessary for future expansion.

Under the proposal, Glock would clear out and level 25 acres of heavily wooded land on a portion of its property that lies behind an existing company building on Highlands Parkway. To do that, the company needs to work within the area running around a porter of streams that is usually protected to preserve the environment.

Like I always say… sometimes you gotta bulldoze a few trees and disrespect some streams to get a good pistol made.

When someone not in uniform carries a gun in public, they are in effect saying “I could kill you, if I chose.” Which in turn poses an immediate threat to my own freedom of speech, freedom of action, freedom to congregate and freedom to be in public spaces.

So does driving a car make the same statement then?

Open carry advocates claim they are protecting the public by being a secondary, informal police force. Personally, I prefer the trained, publicly accountable and regulated police force. I know the rules that law enforcement are obligated to protect. I do not know what laws, regulations, whims or prejudices govern the behavior of someone I have never seen before who is carrying a weapon.

Publicly accountable? hahhaha  How often is a police officer held accountable for their actions when they do something wrong?

Also, the last part I put in bold I found especially hilarious.

Very interesting idea.  Seems like it would be pretty tough to get the perspective perfect unless you could somehow hook your camera up to your computer and have some sort of “live view” and overlay the historical picture with lots of transparency. There must be some programs available to do that… trial and error would just be too tedious.

Anyone who thinks these would work has been watching too many movies. Unless the person holding the gun to you happened to have the safety on, or didn’t have one in the chamber, then you’re going to get a bullet in you. I’m sure the tactics would work great against something that doesn’t shoot projectiles out at thousands of feet per second… such as a knife.

I can’t find the clip, but all this reminds me of is when Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan are bullshitting in the movie Rush Hour practicing something similar. LOL

Terrible that the photographer lost his life. As usual the news outlets are touting it as an “accident”… it’s not an accident when you treat a gun as a toy (or prop in this case) and don’t do something as basic as checking to see that they are unloaded and rendered safe.  If the photographer wasn’t familiar with guns he should have told the couple that he was not comfortable that he would be safe, and then declined to do that part of the shoot.
