The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot will join Barcelona on a free transfer in the summer.

The 23-year-old’s contract runs out in the summer and he has agreed a signing on fee of €10m (£9m) as well as a salary of just over £170,000 a week for five years with the La Liga leaders.

Rabiot has been at PSG since 2012 and was always expected to be the heartbeat of PSG’s midfield for years to come but his form has stagnated in the past couple of years and he will now attempt to relaunch his career in Spain. Despite being one of his country’s best young prospects he has played only six times for the national team.

Barcelona are also confident of signing the 19-year-old Toulouse defender Jean-Clair Todibo on a free transfer in June. Manchester City and Juventus were among the clubs interested in the young centre-back but Barcelonahave convinced the player to join them as they continue their overhaul of an ageing squad.

PSG, meanwhile, are in pole position to sign the young Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who had also interested Barcelona and Manchester City. The French club are in advanced talks with Ajax and are likely to agree a fee in the region of £65m for the 21-year-old midfielder.

Steve McManaman heaped praise on the “absolutely fantastic” Andy Robertson after his fine display in Liverpool FC’s 5-1 thrashing of Arsenal on Saturday night.

The Reds were at their brilliant best as they thrashed the Gunners at Anfield to help them to move nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Arsenal had taken the lead through Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the 11th minute, but Liverpool FC were soon level thanks to Roberto Firmino’s equaliser.

The Reds then when ahead in the 14th minute when Firmino fired home, before goals from Sadio Mane and Mo Salah’s penalty made it 4-1 at half-time.

And Firmino added further gloss to the scoreline when he fired home his penalty in the 65th minute to complete his hat-trick.

Robertson featured for 83 minutes at Anfield before coming off and had a pass success rate of 69 per cent.

And McManaman was clearly impressed by the Scot’s performance and overall contribution to the Liverpool FC team recently.

Speaking during BT Sport‘s coverage of the game, McManaman said: “He’s been absolutely fantastic.”

He continued: “He was patient to get in the side.

“More importantly, when he did get in the side, his passion, performances and work-rate has been absolutely outstanding. His numbers must be frightening.”

Liverpool FC will return to Premier League action on Thursday when they take on Manchester City at The Etihad.

Switzerland's Granit Xhaka & Xherdan Shaqiri face bans over goal celebrations

Switzerland pair Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri face two-match bans for their goal celebrations in their side's World Cup victory over Serbia.

Football's world governing body Fifa is investigating whether they broke rules on political and offensive messages.

Both players are ethnic Albanians from Kosovo, where a Serbian crackdown on the Albanian population only ended with Nato military intervention in 1999.

They made 'double eagle' gestures after scoring, symbolising the Albanian flag.

The country's flag carries the image of a double-headed eagle.

BBC Sport understands Fifa will examine if the gestures can be classed as provocation.

Under article 54 of the governing body's disciplinary code, "anyone who provokes the general public during a match will be suspended for two matches and sanctioned with a minimum fine of 5,000 Swiss francs (£3,800)".

It is thought Fifa plans to call expert witnesses to explain how the goal celebrations could be classed as provocative.

It will be argued that the behaviour illustrates the Albanian nationalist-supported notion of a Greater Albania, which makes territorial claims on parts of Kosovo, Serbia, Macedonia and Greece.

If Fifa's case is upheld, then the players would miss the last Group E game against Costa Rica and the last-16 match if Switzerland qualify.

On Saturday, Fifa confirmed its disciplinary committee had opened proceedings against Xhaka and Shaqiri, adding: "In relation to the same match, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the Serbian FA for crowd disturbance and the display of political and offensive messages by Serbian fans.

"Furthermore, a preliminary investigation has been opened against the coach of the Serbian national team, Mladen Krstajic, for alleged statements made in the aftermath of the said match."

It is unclear what the investigation into Krstajic refers to, but in comments to Serbian reporters on Saturday, he said of match referee Felix Brych: "I wouldn't give him either a yellow or red card, I would send him to The Hague. Then they could put him on trial, like they did to us."

After the game, which his side won 2-1, Switzerland's Bosnia-born manager Vladimir Petkovic was asked about the celebrations and said: "You should never mix football and politics. It's important to be a fan, and to give respect.

"It was a wonderful atmosphere and that's what support should be about."

Arsenal midfielder Xhaka's father spent three and a half years as a political prisoner in Yugoslavia, while Shaqiri was born in Yugoslavia before emigrating to Switzerland as a child.

Stoke City forward Shaqiri also sported a Kosovan flag, stitched onto his boots.

"It's just emotion," he said about his celebration. "I'm very happy to score this goal. It's not more. I think we don't have to speak about this now."

Club officials spotted in London, Talks ongoing to agree Arsenal transfer deal this summer

This summer has been largely focused on the arrivals at Arsenal and not so much on the departures that have happened or are about to happen.

One such player that could be on the move is Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina who is being considered as a possible signing by the Turkish club Fenerbahce.

According to reports in Turkish Football, some of the officials of the club including president Ali Koc were spotted in London and it is said that they were in the city to discuss a potential transfer for Ospina. The president sees the keeper as part of a massive change that he wants to bring to the club.

Ospina is among the many players that Fenerbahce are targeting at the moment and they are confident that a deal can be struck for the keeper who is currently with his national team at the World Cup. Given the recent transfer activity of Arsenal, a move does not seem that far off.

Having just signed a new goalkeeper in the form of German Bernd Leno, it is expected that one of Ospina or Petr Cech will leave the club. The veteran has the advantage of Premier League experience under his belt and that may be the reason that he stays.

Ospina, on the other hand, would surely be looking for more first-team football and a move elsewhere may prove to be what he wants. His path was already blocked by Cech and now that Leno has arrived, it will be even more difficult to break in now.

The reason why Arsenal may let Ospina is that they can afford to do so now that they have secured the services of another keeper who is going to be the new number 1. And any funds that arrive from the sale of the Colombian, will surely be used to strengthen other departments.

Any move for the player is complicated by the fact that Ospina is at the World Cup right now. So, the Fenerbahce officials might have to wait a little longer for all the formalities to be sorted out.

West Ham are interested in acquiring the services of Jack Wilshere, according to Sky Sports.

Despite initial reports suggesting the midfielder was set to continue his eighteen-year stay at Arsenal, it is now understood the 26-year-old will leave the Emirates Stadium when his contract expires at the end of the month.

Talks with new Gunners boss Unai Emery failed to result in a contract extension for the long-time Arsenal man.

Amongst the teams seeking to land the skilful play-maker, West Ham are alleged to be one of the favourites.

Manuel Pellegrini is seeking to overhaul the squad in his first transfer window as manager at the London Stadium and the addition of Wilshere would inject a certain amount of creativity to a midfield longing for just that.

Manuel Lanzini’s knee injury will prevent him from making an appearance until well into the 2018/19 season, and Wilshere’s presence in the squad could alleviate the impact of the Argentine’s absence.

Wilshere was part of the Arsenal setup since 2001, making 125 appearances for the North Londoners.

The Englishman has also received 34 caps for his country, but notably was excluded from Gareth Southgate’s World Cup plans.

The Nigerian international has struggled to push on at Arsenal after his early promise and will hope to progress under new head coach Unai Emery

On Italian TV on Tuesday night, Sampdoria’s president, Massimo Ferrero, let slip that midfielder, Lucas Torreira, will be joining Arsenal for €30m despite his release clause only being €26m.

“Sampdoria do not sell unless there are excellent offers,” the president said. “We do not look for buyers. We have natural talents whose values increase exponentially.

“Generally, we do not make changes. Sampdoria is a stepping stone. It’s a family-run club and that allows players to grow up. It’s normal they have aspirations to play for big clubs, but I do not need to sell out.

“Torreira has left for €30million. I bought him from Pescara when no one believed. We bet and we won, paying just €3million. The money that comes in, is used to keep the club going.”

It was reported that Arsenal’s medical staff were travelling to Russia in order to complete his medical. Arsenal want to get the deal done as soon as possible before Torreira has any chance of increasing his market value at the tournament.

Torreira will join Arsenal on a five-year deal worth £2.6m-a-year to the player. Arsenal will pay Sampdoria £26.1m for the 22-year-old, exceeding his buyout clause in order to see off Napoli.

In addition to his release clause, Torreira also had another four years to run on his Samp contract.

Pescara will receive €1m from the sale, thanks to a sell-on clause in the midfielder’s Sampdoria contract. According to TuttoPescaraCalcio they had a 20% sell-on clause, with a maximum of €1m.

It looks like Arsenal have the edge over Manchester United in any potential transfer battle over Freiburg defender Caglar Soyuncu this summer.

The young Turkish ace has shone in the Bundesliga and has long been linked with a summer move to the Gunners, who need to strengthen at the back.

The Sun claimed some time ago that Arsenal were closing in on the signing of Soyuncu, though the Manchester Evening News also suggested the Red Devils could consider him as one of a number of options for them to improve their defensive options.

The latest from the player himself, however, is that he’s keen on a move to Arsenal (with no mention of United) but that it still depends on Freiburg deciding to let him go.

Calciomercato have claimed the 22-year-old would cost around €40million, but it remains to be seen if Arsenal will pay that for a relatively unproven player.

Providing an update on his situation, Soyuncu told Gunes: ‘It is true, Arsenal have made an offer, I want Arsenal, god willing I will go to Arsenal or the Premier League but it all depends on Freiburg.

ARSENAL TO HOLD TALKS WITH SEVILLA MIDFIELDER’S AGENT

Arsenal are set to hold talks with Ever Banega’s agent over a possible summer switch to the Emirates, according to FootballGossip.

The 29-year-old is currently in Russia with the Argentina squad for the World Cup and reports in Italy claim that the midfielder’s agent, Marcelo Simonian, is ready to talk to with Arsenal in the coming days over a potential move.

Unai Emery knows Banega very well from his days at Valencia and Sevilla. However, Emery is known not to have much input in the recruitment of players, but Arsenal did have reported interest in the Sevilla midfielder when Arsene Wenger oversaw the club.

Sampdoria president confirms Torreira departure

Sampdoria’s president Massimo Ferrero has confirmed that the club has agreed to sell midfielder Lucas Torreira for €30 million.

It’s yet to be confirmed that Arsenal are the club that have bought the Uruguay international although it’s been widely reported that personal terms have been agreed and that the deal will be ratified by the Gunners when the player’s World Cup duty ends.

Torreira came off the bench in Uruguay’s opening game in Russia as they beat Egypt with a 90th-minute winner.

Speaking to Italian TV station TMW, Ferrero revealed: “Torreira has left for €30million, I bought him from Pescara when nobody believed in him.

“We took a gamble on him and we won, paying just €3million. The money that comes in will be used to capitalise the company.”

Bernd Leno Signs Contract with Arsenal

Key to the Gunners’ Success?

Widely seen as a successor to Petr Cech, Bernd Leno will have a lot to do at the Emirates. After a trying season, Arsenal need to shore up their defences and surely will do so with Leno on their books.

He became only the third goalkeeper in Bundesliga history to keep a clean sheet in his first three games. Bernd Leno also became the youngest stopper in Champions League history, after making his debut against Chelsea in 2011. Leno kept 10 clean sheets out of 33 appearances for Leverkusen last term, only one less than Petr Cech.

Leno will be instrumental in Arsenal’s push for silverware this season and for Champions League football the next. Cech is nearly 10 years older than the German and is in the twilight of a decorated career.

this as a double victory, not only have they been able to sign a much-needed player, they have also managed to fend off interest from Napoli and Atletico Madrid.

Adding to the signings of Lichtsteiner, this sends a message that they are still very much a force in the market, and a draw for top players. Arsenal fans will be hoping that this is one in a string of additions by the new manager. Whether Emery will sell Cech or Ospina remains to be seen.

JOEL CAMPBELL FOCUSED ON WORLD CUP NOT ARSENAL EXIT

It seems unlikely that Arsenal will afford Joel Campbell an opportunity to resurrect his Arsenal career.

In the seven years he’s been a Gunner he’s only spent one and a half seasons actually competing for a first team place at the Emirates – the rest of the time he’s been out on six different loan moves.

With just days left on his current contract, the 25-year-old would be forgiven for having one eye on negotiations with possible suitors, however, he’s at the World Cup with Costa Rica…and, well, that’s important too.

Asked whether the chance to play in Russia could help him secure a move, the attacker said: “The World Cup won’t change my life, I don’t come here to show myself.

“I came to help my national team, everyone writes his own history and we have to look after group.

“I know about my contract and I know who I am. God has a plan for me.”

That all seems reasonable. Campbell didn’t actually start his country’s first game. He was a second half substitute as they went down 1-0 to Serbia.

Arsenal transfer news: Update on Lucas Torriera medical issued by Italian journalist

Torreira is wanted by the Gunners with a move understood to be nearing completion.

He’s available for £22m due to a release clause in his Sampdoria contract, however Arsenal are willing to pay more in order to spread out the cost of the deal over several seasons.

And he’s now edging close to becoming Unai Emery’s latest summer signing.

Italian reporter Fabrizo Romano issued an update on the Torreira deal yesterday - and added Germany goalkeeper Bernd Leno is also on his way to the Emirates.

He wrote on Twitter: “Torreira will have medicals with Arsenal soon! And also Leno is coming... #transfers #AFC #Arsenal.”

3 Deals Completed: Rating Unai Emery’s First Dealings As Arsenal Manager

Since Unai Emery has been appointed Arsenal manager, the club has made three significant moves in terms of players and from this we can start to see the style that the new man wants to implement at the club. In this article, we take a look at each deal and grade it.

1 – Stephan Lichtsteiner

Emery completed his first deal as Arsenal manager at the end of May, signing former Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer.

An experienced defender, captain of Switzerland with 100 caps and more than 200 appearances for Juventus. He may be 34, but the tactical nous and experience he can add on and off the pitch will certainly be important. It’s good to see Emery notice our lack of depth at fullback and it is not a foregone conclusion that he will be back up to Bellerin, with the young Spanish defender struggling for form recently. Hopefully, the arrival of Licht will push Bellerin to improve, and you’d hope he’ll learn a thing or two from Lichtsteiner who can play as a traditional right-back or as a wing back if we revert to a 5 at the back formation.

Head coach Emery said: “Stephan brings huge experience and leadership to our squad. He’s a player with great quality with a very positive and determined attitude. Stephan will improve us on and off the pitch.”

2 – Ainsley Maitland-Niles Extension

Emery clearly views Maitland-Niles as a key part of the team and that excites me. When A new man arrived I was worried what he might make of certain players I like, you never know, but he clearly sees the potential in Ainsley. On signing a new contract the player said the following:

“You don’t really hear a lot of young players being shouted out by their managers, especially a new manager who hasn’t really seen them play too much,” Maitland-Niles told Arsenal Player. “I think it’s brilliant to hear from him and it gives me a load of confidence.

“It feels fantastic knowing that I’m going to be a part of the squad, and a big part of the squad. It means a lot with the new head coach coming in and Arsenal tying me down [with a new contract]. I’m very pleased.

“We had a little meeting. He said that he wants all of his players to work hard and I’m no stranger to doing that. It will be second nature to me.

“I think [the high-pressing game] suits me a lot, too. I’ve got a lot of pace to give to the team, pressing up high and winning the ball back as soon as possible is a major factor in football.”

3 - Granit Xhaka Extension

Granit is a bit like Marmite, some fans seem to hate him but fans that don’t hold grudges will see him in a different light. The midfielder has a lot of potential and has perhaps been the teams best player in 2018, at least in the top three for me. He’s improved lots already during his time at the club and under Emery I’m excited to see how much more he can develop. It’s good to see the new manager agrees:

“I’m delighted that Granit has extended his contract with us. He’s an important member of the squad and is still young so will be able to develop even more. I hope he has a successful World Cup with Switzerland and comes back fit and ready for the new season.”

This is a bit of a ‘wait and see’ deal – if Emery can get the best out of Xhaka and sign a midfielder like Lucas Torreira to get the best out of him, then this extension could be a 10, but for now I’m going to rate it a 7/10. I’m definitely happy with it, but time will tell if Xhaka was worth the extra investment, I think he will be.

€25m Deal Nearly Done: German To Have Medical At Arsenal Tomorrow

Arsenal are set to announce their second senior signing of the summer tomorrow, according to reports emerging from Germany today.

The report comes from Kicker, who have been pretty accurate with Arsenal news to date. The report says:

‘As expected, Bernd Leno leaves Bayer Leverkusen and joins Arsenal. Atletico Madrid and SSC Napoli are said to have been interested in the German national keeper, but Leno himself had always preferred a move to London. According to our information, he will complete a medical check on Tuesday at Arsenal and then sign a five-year contract.’

26-year-old Leno is expected to arrive on a long-term contract and provide competition for Petr Cech, who is now 36 and possibly in his last season at the club. Should Leno’s move be completed, David Ospina is expected to leave, with several Turkish and Mexican teams interested in his services.

Leno is a keeper who showed a lot of promise as a youngster, but one who has struggled to iron out the mistakes in his game since maturing. Emery and co. must feel there is still potential to be unearthed in Leno, who is a somewhat lively goalkeeper – he could be compared to Woijech Szczesny.

The report also says that Napoli made a late offer of around £16million, but Arsenal’s offer trumps that at around £22million and the Gunners will win this race.

A medical for Leno should be a formality, he did not make the final Germany squad so will be able to complete his medical in London, as well as completing his photoshoot and other media duties.

Arsenal are also expected to finalise deals for Sokratis and Lucas Torreira in the coming weeks. As well as a goalkeeper, the Gunners are also looking at potentially signing a new winger. Personally, the likes of Cristian Pavon and Hirving Lozano have caught my eye at the World Cup, but Gelson Martins is another possibility, especially with the news that he has reportedly cancelled his contract.

Napoli ask Arsenal for Petr Cech on loan

Napoli want to sign Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech on loan, according to reports.

Italian outlet Di Marzio write that Napoli are desperate to sign a goalkeeper this summer, after their pursuit of Bernd Leno appears to have failed. Their priority signing is Alphonse Areola of Paris Saint-Germain, but the French club aren’t open to a sale, and would prefer to sell Kevin Trapp.

The Serie A side haven’t given up on Areola just yet, but they’ve reportedly made enquiries with Arsenal over the availability of Petr Cech on loan as a back up plan.

It’s a bit of a strange thing to propose to Arsenal, considering Cech’s current contract with the club only lasts until 2019 anyway. By the time the 36-year-old returned from loan he would be available on a free transfer, so it would make much more sense for the Gunners to sell.

It’s not completely unheard of for Arsenal to send players on loan in the final year of their deal, but it usually happens with youth players. For example, Marc Bola and Tafari Moore both spent the year with lower league English clubs, before Arsenal released them this summer on their return.

Perhaps the club could consider doing the same thing with Cech, given he’s unlikely to command a big fee at his age. We’ll have to wait and see how they respond to Napoli’s enquiry.

5 New Signings: Predicted Arsenal Line-Up vs. Manchester City On Opening Day

It’s less than 2 months before another season kicks off and with the fixtures now announced, we wanted to take a look at the possible team Arsenal could put out against Manchester City, if the transfer speculation is true.

GK – Bernd Leno

You may be wondering who Leno is. Well, he’s a 26-year-old keeper from Bayer Leverkusen who is reportedly set to join Arsenal. Leno is highly rated by Sven Mislintat, with the Arsenal head of recruitment thought to be influential in arranging this move. Should he sign for a reported £22million, I would expect him to be number 1 and be ahead of Cech.

RB – Stephan Lichtsteiner

Bellerin is not with the Spain squad so he will be fresh, but I get the feeling that if Switzerland do not go far in Russia, Emery will go for the experience and tactical discipline of Lichtsteiner against Manchester City.

CB – Sokratis Papastathopoulos

CB – Çağlar Söyüncü

Arsenal are said to be closing in on a deal for Soyuncu, with reports suggesting the player has agreed to the move. If he does join, it will likely be for a significant fee. The 22-year-old is highly rated in Europe and I would expect him to come into the starting line up, particularly because Turkey have had the summer off. Capped by Turkey 15 times already, he is regarded as one of the best young defenders in Europe and has been identified by Sven Mislintat, and it is believed that Emery approves of the signing. Standing at 6ft 2′, he is a physical defender but also someone who is comfortable on the ball. With Koscielny injured, Mustafi and Chambers futures in doubt and Mertesacker retired, should Soyuncu sign, I expect him to start this game.

LB – Sead Kolasinac

With Spain likely to reach the latter stages and Monreal in the squad, I expect Kolasinac to get the nod for this one, he will have to improve defensively under Emery, though.

CM – Lucas Torreira

Torreira is a signing that is set to be completed and I’m sure he’ll come straight into the starting eleven. He’s got the energy to get the best out of Xhaka and has been described by some as a mixture of Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin mixed together – that’s exactly what we need alongside Xhaka and it will help give our defence more cover.

CM – Granit Xhaka

RAM – Mesut Ozil

CAM – Aaron Ramsey

Ramsey will hopefully sign a new contract soon and then become a key member of Emery’s team. It is thought that Unai rates him very highly and wants to build the team around the Welshman. He’s an energetic midfielder who can give the team a lot and help spread the new work ethic across the team, perhaps even with the captain’s armband?

LAM – Henrikh Mkhitaryan

ST – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Whilst Lacazette and Aubameyang could play together under Emery, I feel he will only opt with Aubameyang for such a tough opening fixture. Selecting just one striker will give the Gunners more energy and balance – something Emery will be keen to show from an early stage at the club.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Lucas Torreira will be done and dusted by early next week, according to latest reports in the Express.

There are only a few minor details that need to finalized and after that, the club can officially confirm the Uruguayan as a Gunner. The deal is expected to be announced before the country’s next match against Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

The player is currently with his National team at the World Cup in Russia, where he appeared as a substitute in their opening match.

The club have sent a few staff members to Russia to accelerate the completion of the deal as there are a few sticking points. The

primary objective is to get the medical of Torreira done during the World Cup.

A €30m deal between the player, his club Sampdoria and Arsenal has been agreedfor some time now. With personal terms out of the way, the only detail remaining is the medical and the announcement. It

Vis understood that Torreira will be given permission by the Uruguay officials the time needed to complete his move.

Once the deal is announced it will become the second transfer to be confirmed by Arsenal after the signing of veteran Swiss full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner. Torreira will provide an immediate boost to the midfield and help relieve some of the pressure that is often felt by Granit Xhaka.

Signing him has not been an easy task as it was complicated by the interest of Napoli and Borussia Dortmund to a certain extent. But, the offer of the Gunners and the superior financial package that they put forth proved to be the clinching factor in getting Torreira to agree to a move to Arsenal.

The Uruguayan has the ability to break up play with his aggressive defending and he can also facilitate the attack as his passing range is very good. Bringing in a player like Torreira will make it interesting to see the way in which Unai Emery will use the services of Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil.

Arsenal fans will have an eye on the matches of Uruguay to see what their new midfielder will be able to bring to the table.

Granit Xhaka signs new contract

Arsenal have announced midfielder Granit Xhaka has committed his future to the Premier League club by signing a new "long-term" contract.

Switzerland international Xhaka featured in all 38 Premier League games in the 2017-18 season, starting 37 and making a single appearance off the bench.

And Arsenal confirmed on Friday that Xhaka has agreed to extend his stay at Emirates Stadium, although the length of his contract remains undisclosed.

The 25-year-old midfielder featured in all 38 Premier League matches last season, starting 37 and making one appearance from the bench. He has made 94 appearances for us and won the Emirates FA Cup in his first season. He has 61 caps for Switzerland and is part of their squad for the World Cup.

"Hi Gunners, it's Granit, I'm happy and proud to sign a new contract here for Arsenal," Xhaka said in a video message posted on social media. I hope for good results in the future."

Lucas Torreira transfer: Arsenal medical staff arrive in Russia to complete signing

ARSENAL have medical staff in Russia to complete the signing of Lucas Torreira, according to reports in Italy.

Torreira came on in the final minutes of Uruguay's World Cup opener against Egypt as they won 1-0 from a late Jose Gimenez header but will be an Arsenal player in due course.

He is expected to sign a five-year deal worth £2.6m a year after Arsenal agreed a £26.19m fee with Sampdoria.

Arsenal already have the doctors over in Russia to complete the medical procedures and he will officially be an Arsenal player before the end of the World Cup

Unai Emery and Arsenal’s transfer committee have identified the midfielder as the man to help dictate games in north London.

He has impressed for Sampdoria and is expected to be involved in Uruguay’s World Cup campaign.

Yesterday it was claimed the signing was done and dusted by Fabrizio Romano.

When asked by a fan on Twitter about the Gunners’ pursuit of Torreira, Romano said: “[Torreira] is done mate! But I don’t know when [it] will be announced.”

Emery has already signed Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus in his first deal since arriving at the Emirates.

Arsenal are also closing in on deals for Bernd Leno and Sokratis Papastathopoulos as Emery looks to overhaul his side.

Emery is also keen to develop his current group of players and challenge for the Champions League spots.

“I believe we can grow with the players we have,” he said when appointed last month.

“The objective is to work hard together and with these talented players.

“It’s very important for the club, after two years outside the Champions League, to work to be the best team in the Premier League and also in the world.”

Premier League 2018-19 fixtures: Arsenal host Manchester City on opening day

New Arsenal boss Unai Emery will kick off his Premier League career with a nice gentle opener against champions Manchester City on a mouthwatering opening weekend of the 2018/19 season.

Wolves mark their return to the top flight with a home game against Everton, while the other teams returning to the Premier League, Cardiff and Fulham, begin their campaigns against Bournemouth and Crystal Palace respectively.

Tottenham travel to Newcastle – a repeat of last season’s opening fixture – while Liverpool against West Ham is another tasty-looking clash.
