Shakespeare in person

Yesterday morning, I was in an English Studies class (Literature) trying very hard to explain some of the fundamentals of the history of Shakespeare when suddenly I mispronounced a word. It was in fact a simple two-syllable utterance – “PERSON” which anybody of a basic reading ability could pronounce effortlessly. I remember pronouncing it as “PERCHENT” instead of correct one – person (\ˈpər-sən\). All of a sudden the whole class burst into laughter and I was taken aback, I can feel warm blood flowing down all over my face making me blushy for a while. Shortly,however, I was in control of myself and continued with my lesson.

This made me reflect that how meticulous were you in your pronunciation of a foreign language, your mother tongue still prevails. This is above all exceptionally true if you still speak your first language and is the dominant language in your everyday conversation. “PERCHENT” is undoubtedly a DUSUN influenced pronunciation, a clear indication that I spoke Dusun most of the time and converse in English only in my English classes.

I was actually very careful with my pronunciation and had great difficulty to adjust my British accent to the familiar local Maglish. I realised however, that I can easily lose my British accent when I try to speak quickly – so PERSON is pronounced as PERCHENT , ZOO as JU, ZEBRA as JIBRA and many more. This will be a lesson to me that however frantic are you in class, try to be in control and speak with confidence. Ha ha ha.. PERCHENT!, I can't believe it!

My Bad Weekend

I can’t believe it. This was my first bad weekend of the year. I went home from work last Friday and while I was on the road, somebody honked and shouted from my rear. I couldn’t understand what was going on. My first impression was that someone else ahead of me could have made a mistake on the lane. I was very confident that it was not meant for me.

Arriving safely home though, I was curious that I might be the one who was at fault. So I checked my car thoroughly. Upon checking the lights, I realised that one of the rear turn signals was not working. I was actually the person that the guy was honking and shouting at after all. This is actually the second incident.

The first incident was that my cheap (but much valued) Sony Ericsson F305 cell phone has gone bananas! It stopped working while I was teaching in class. Actually, I can still receive calls and text messages but there is nothing on the screen, it was completely white! My students gave their opinion that it could be the cable, specifically the flex cable. (For your information, my classic Nokia is my second phone, I use it as a spare phone whenever necessary).

After lunch, I went straight to an auto parts shop and bought a light bulb for the turn signal. Later, I stopped at a cell phone repair shop and inquired about what could have happened to my phone. Sure enough, it was the flex cable. The repair man explained in length about the problem and told me that the hitch is simple to solve but could be expensive. The flex cable itself cost RM75!, but it only took him 30 minutes to get it repaired. After a prolonged negotiation, he finally agreed to charge me RM60 for the cable inclusive of labour charge. I don’t really care about the RM60; at least she (F305) is working again.

Gunsirit: "This is a cheap cell phone, why has the flex cable to be so expensive?"

Technician: "This phone is an old model, it's very hard to look for the parts, that is why it's expensive."

And the final appalling occurrence was that, when I tried to open my website (gunsirit.com), instead of the normal home page, this is what I got –“Bandwidth Limit Exceeded. The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later.

I emailed my hosting company as regard to this problem and very shortly I got a reply (They were really efficient in servicing their clients). This was the reply :

Hello Sir,

Your account has reached the alloted bandwidth limit on the account and this is the reason the site is showing bandwidth exceed page.

I have raised 50 mb limit at this time. Please upgrade the account to the next plan with higher bandwidth as soon you can.

Well, it will probably cost me a few hundred bucks to upgrade and get it going again. Actually, I am broke at this moment, so this has to wait until the end of the month. On the meantime, thanks to blogger, I still have my old blogspot account. So I will be posting here up until I can get my site working again.

To compensate for my worse day, I decided to visit my tiny nursery at the back of the house. I was amused to watch my rubber seedling (actually small rubber trees) sprouting out some small leaves. They were really amazing and made me forget what I had just gone through the whole day. Here are pictures of my rubber seedlings and of my tortoise pet - Guntapil. Until then, happy blogging and will see you again in my next entry.

Natural Rubber Prices Skyrocket

The price of rubber has skyrocketed to the RM8.00 mark per kilo.

This information is based on TV3 programme broadcast a few days ago. It is a bit intriguing, so I did some web research and found out that it was actually true – rubber tapping for 15 days and bring home RM10K! This is really amazing, the amount dwarfed my monthly salary by two-fold and that is for a mere 15-day work.

Years ago when I was 10 or 11, the price of rubber is about 50 to 80 sen a kilo and the highest it can go is to the RM 1.50 mark. It is a far cry to the price today as it has sky rocketed to RM11.00. Good Bye Blogger

Actually, I am upgrading - migrating to my own domain gunsirit.com. It is still under construction so you will only see a blank page right now. I will miss my blogspot, 3 years being my lover and I am going to leave it just like that. On a second thought, I will probably still utilise it as a tool to promote my new blog. In other words, I would still be interacting with it as long as I need it - so sad! Macam buang girlfriend lama pula bila sudah dapat girlfriend baru..

In the mean time I would not be able to visit and comment on your gorgeous blogs as I am now busy working to set up my new site, hmmm..I forgot all those php file handling techniques, the SQL databases. This could take me a few days just to set it up. For your information, I was advised by Donny at donnyien.com to get a paid hosting and he recommended exabytes.my. I purchased the cheapest package available at only RM77.00 yearly. Thanks Donny! So, what are you waiting for? upgrade!..hehehe..

My Childhood Years - New Year

It was indeed a very dark night, cold and foggy. We were at our usual spot by the river bank sitting and chatting endlessly awaiting for the arrival of the New Year. We had a complete chicken each on a barbecue and they really looked full of flavour as the smell now slowly percolated into our consciousness. I didn’t ask him how he managed to get hold of his chicken, and I am not willing talk about how I got mine too.

They were cooked a few minutes before the clock ticked to 12.00 a.m. and we quickly ate them without even sounding a word. They were simply delicious!

At 12:01, we jumped into the river half-naked. It was a tradition during that time that you should throw away your underwear to get rid of all your bad luck of the previous year and to enter the New Year with a fresh start. Well, all this while I broke up with my girlfriend, had a few accidents with my buffalo and to top that up I was in a few skirmishes with my friends as well. I want to start the New Year with something that I have been dreaming of – no girlfriend at all, better handling of the buffalo and winning up more friends. So, I intentionally put on my favourite yellow underwear, though almost 3 years old, it was still good as new (except for a few patches here and there). So, I dived into the cold water a few times and took off my underwear and threw it downriver as far as it can go. Amidst the roaring sound of the river, I could somewhat heard somebody yelling, but I am not so sure, it could only be the thud coming out from bellow of the water.

"Who is the wise guy getting rid of his underwear and throwing it on my head!?"

Next morning, I woke up feeling refreshed. I almost believed that this would indeed be a good year for me and the first day of the year should go by without an episode, but I was wrong.

"Have you seen my chicken that I just bought?"

"No, sir, I didn't see it"

"You are lying!"

"No, sir I don't"

"I don't believe you!"

"No, sir, I swear!"

"I know, you had it barbecued last night!"

"No, daddy, I didn't"

My Second and Final Date

It was on our second date, again on top of a buffalo, that was my dear pet Guntalou. I can still remember vividly, it was a lonely September afternoon, cool as usual but the smell of buffalo dung was everywhere. That was not the point; the most important thing is that I am with her again after the embarrassing failure of the first date.

We were just going through the most romantic talk when suddenly a larger male buffalo appeared from nowhere. It was pure instinct that the more superior bull will be the aggressor and the smaller male has no choice but to run for its dear life.

We were completely taken by surprise and haven’t been able to disembark. The ride was really painful as I was sitting on the neck side of the beast, I can’t imagine how many times it bumped on my balls – what an infuriating experience! I didn’t have a chance to look behind to see how my girlfriend is doing; all I can recall is her screams and curse and repeatedly shouting out that she is going to leave me for good.

Guntalou suddenly jumped into a river, that jump ended the chase. For a while I couldn’t find her, she could be under the buffalo! But a familiar voice later proved that my speculation was wrong. “Gunsirit, cukup lah, sansara saya ikut-ikut sama kau”, she held her breath for a while and continued, “Kau ni macam gila-gila bah, orang lain dating di Taman Bunga, kau dating atas karabau!”, she paused for a while, washing her buffalo-dung tainted hair. “Ini yang terakhir lah ah! Kau cari saja lah sumandak yang suka karabau macam kau, gud bai and gud luk!” I will be alone again but at least Guntalou is still with me.
