Sharing a booth with its French Dealer, Global Consulting, Guntert & Zimmerman (G&Z) participated in INTERMAT 2012. G&Z exhibited its new S600: Multi-Purpose Slipform Paver. The S600 has taken the US market by storm since its domestic introduction at CONEXPO/CONAGG 2011. INTERMAT 2012 gave the international market its first opportunity to see the G&Z S600 in person.

Dufferin Construction Selects G&Z Slipform Paving Spread For Canada’s Longest Runway

To build what will be the longest airport runway in Canada, Dufferin Construction Company, a division of Holcim (Canada) Inc. recently purchased a three-machine spread of concrete paving equipment from Guntert & Zimmerman. Ontario-based Dufferin Construction , which already owns two other G&Z pavers, bought an S1500 four-track Slipform Paver, a PS1200 Placer Spreader, and an TC1500 Texture Cure Machine for this project.

The big project is at Calgary International Airport in Alberta, where Dufferin’s contract calls for more than 1 million square meters (1.2 million square yards) of new concrete surface. Construction has already started. Dufferin essentially will have two construction seasons – 2012 and 2013 – to complete the work, which is scheduled to wrap up by May 2014....Read More.

New TeleEndXL: Telescopic Paving Kit End Section

The TeleEnd: Telescopic Paving Kit End Section was originally released with 3 feet (0.9 m) of quick width change capability. G&Z has now introduced the TeleEndXL. The New TeleEndXL features 4 feet (1.2 m) of quick width change capability. The New TeleEndXL allows the contractor 8 feet (2.5 m) of quick width adjustment when the paving kit is fitted with two TeleEndXLs. This telescopic range adds to the argument that G&Z slipform pavers are the most versatile machines on the market.

G&Z’s TeleEnd has revolutionized the way contractors change slipform paver paving kit widths. The TeleEnd allows the contractor to perform width changes quickly and with fewer personnel. The TeleEnd is made up of a telescopic terminal that can be filled with easy to install add-in paving kit spacer sections. The Add-in Paving Kit Spacer Sections are made up of three components: a front spacer, a rear spacer, and a bottom pan section. The pans have a “tongue and groove” connection to engage the front spacer and fine level adjusters to attach the rear spacer. There are line up dowels on the spacers and pans to guide the sections together meaning there are no bolts to fix the sections as they are held together by hydraulic clamping forces.

Not all contractors necessarily require the ability to change widths in the middle of a pour, however many do want the capability to change widths quickly in between pours. Presently, the market offers concrete paving equipment which utilizes variable and quick width solutions but can not meet tight smoothness specifications. Today’s market requires contractors to have the ability to change widths quickly to meet production schedules while not sacrificing smoothness. The G&Z TeleEnd answers both the need for quick width changes as well as the ability to achieve smooth pavements. Because of the quick width change capability the contractor has a better chance of paving everyday.

Guntert & Zimmerman Partners with Leica Geosystems

Starting in late 2008, Guntert & Zimmerman (G&Z) and Leica Geosystems partnered together with the goal of 3D stringless technology to a customer base focused on ride smoothness. No one has every argued about the huge potential benefits of 3D stringless paving; however, prior to this time, stringless technology was widely considered by contractors to be more suited to airfield paving and highway paving under less stringent smoothness specifications. This perception was changed in late 2009 when G&Z and Leica Geosystems partnered with Flynn Construction of Dubuque, IA on their 10.5 mile Highway 65 Demonstration project near Mason City, Iowa where Flynn’s G&Z S850 paver was controlled using Leica’s industry-standard LMGS-S stringless concrete paving system.

Under Iowa’s very strict zero blanking band smoothness specification, Flynn earned 100% of the available smoothness bonus and did zero grinding. The smoothness achieved on the Flynn I-65 project established a new paradigm using Leica’s LMGS-S, ride was indisputably proven to be as good as the best stringline-guided slipform paving.

Since Fall of 2009, G&Z and Leica Geosystems have successfully commissioned nine Leica stringless installations that have been used on ten different projects around the United States and Canada. G&Z and Leica Geosystems are committed to taking this technology for the concrete paving industry to new levels.

Guntert & Zimmerman is happy to announce that starting in the Spring of 2011 the G&Z S600, S850 and S1500 mainline concrete pavers will all be available with “Direct Connect” software interface, facilitating the Leica system to communicate directly with G&Z’s Networked Microprocessor control system. This significant enhancement will simplify installation and improve the performance of the machine interface with Leica 3D controls. 3D machine control solutions for G&Z’s PS1200 Placer Spreader will also be available.

To better service our customers, Leica Geosystems and Guntert & Zimmerman conducted intensive cross-training this winter of their respective sales and service teams with the goal being that Leica sales and service personnel will be expanding and enhancing their knowledge of slipform paving technology and vice versa to better support our common customer.

New S600 Slipform Paver

Guntert & Zimmerman (G&Z) is proud to announce the release of the S600 Multi-Purpose Slipform Paver. The G&Z S600 Slipform Paver is designed around a multi-purpose tractor frame that makes it ideal for city street, secondary roads, highway and airport paving as well as a wide range of other applications such as barrier walls, off-set paving and zero or minimum clearance paving. The S600’s design has redefined what mobility means for a small paver without sacrificing the same performance advantages contractors have come to expect from G&Z’s large and mid-size paver. Utilizing G&Z’s time tested and rugged paving kit design, the S600 is capable of achieving excellent ride numbers on the toughest IRI and zero blanking band projects.

The S600 features a double telescopic tractor frame, access walkway, and hose hinges for a nominal working range of 8'-0" to 22'-0" (2.44 m to 6.7 m) with up to 7’-0” (2.13 m) of telescopic ability per side - the widest range in the industry. With the use of bolt-in tractor frame extensions, the S600 tractor can extend up to 22'-0" (6.7 m) with a dowel bar inserter (DBI) with hydraulic vibrators or 26’-0” (8 m) with electric vibrators and 29'-5" (9 m) without a DBI.

The versatility of the S600 tractor allows the contractor to quickly switch between applications and paving widths. The tractor components including center module, bolsters, and jacking columns are designed with universal bolting patterns offering a wide range of three and four track tractor configurations with or without swing legs. The S600 is the narrowest profile machine on the market. In standard paving mode there is less than 2’ (610 mm) from edge of pavement to widest point on the paver with sensor support arms removed. The paving kit, front tie bar inserters and many of the other optional attachments on the S600 are interchangeable with other G&Z paver models, giving the contractor a more versatile fleet of paving equipment.

The optional and patented TeleEnds: Telescopic Paving Kit End Sections provide the contractor the ability to perform paving kit width changes rapidly, without the use of cranes, and with only a one or two-person crew. Each TeleEnd gives the contractor 3' (915mm) per side (or 6' [1.83m] for both sides) of quick width change capability. A width change which could typically take a three to four person crew 6 to 10 hours can now be performed by a one or two person crew in less than two hours. For a width change involving a single spacer less than one hour.

The S600 is equipped with G&Z’s new and patented AccuSteer: Slew Drive Track Control. The AccuSteer slew drives are mounted on top of the track yokes and are used to steer the tracks in lieu of steering cylinders. The AccuSteer drives are powered with hourglass worm technology to give long life, high accuracy and extremely high maneuverability. The hourglass worm engages multiple teeth on the pitch line of the ring gear from the hourglass thread. This engagement gives enormous strength and power to the gearbox. The AccuSteer system allows the operator to independently rotate the tracks almost a full circle, providing exceptional maneuverability on site and rapid swing leg relocation for paving and transport without the need to re-pin steering cylinders.

The S600 is also available with G&Z’s new and patented SmartLeg: Swing Leg System takes on the fly track line adjustments to the next level. Working in tandem with the AccuSteer system, The SmartLeg System allows the operator to adjust the swing leg angle on the fly while automatically keeping the track straight ahead. This offers a high level of flexibility for the contractor to maneuver around track line obstacles (e.g. fire hydrants, airport runway lights, etc.) on the fly and without stopping to make a mechanical swing leg adjustment. With the new SmartLeg System, the process for transforming the S600 into the transport or side barrier wall position can be automated. This simple process dramatically saves time over other conventional four track slipform pavers. Using the combination of the 90 degree steering mode and the SmartLeg feature, the four swing bolsters and crawler tracks are automatically walked into the outboard, transport position in approx. 30 minutes. In this transport configuration, the S600 can easily walk and steer onto a standard 8’ (2.5 m) wide trailer. There is no switching of hoses required on the crawler tracks.

The new and patented VariWidth: Tractor Frame Width Change System, working together with the AccuSteer system, allows quick telescopic tractor width changes with the use of rollers and a hydraulic clamping puck system eliminating all clamping bolts. The S600 extension tubes are held in place while in operation with an automatic hydraulic clamping puck system. When the tractor frame width needs to be changed, the operator simply has to flip a switch to release the hydraulic pucks from one side of the machine and walk the machine in or out using the 90º steering mode. The tractor frame extension tubes slide in and out of the center module with the help of rollers. All of the hydraulic hoses and electrical cables between the power unit and the end bolsters are contained in G&Z’s hose management hinge system which eliminates the requirement to change hoses for width changes. With no bolts to loosen, hoses to change, or supports to be added under the tractor, the VariWidth System is a huge time saver. Tractor width changes can be accomplished in a matter of minutes.

The S600 features superb operator visibility and ease of operation. The operator can easily see all around the machine including under foot into the concrete liquification hopper. The S600’s power unit enclosure and cooling system has been designed to minimize the paver operator’s exposure to noise, heat, and vibration. The Operator Console is easily relocated anywhere along the operator platform hand railing to optimize visibility and to meet operator preference. The S600 is provided with emergency stops on all four corners of the machine with magnetic holders to allow them to be relocated.

G&Z’s Next Generation Plus 1 Operator Control System incorporates user friendly operator features and state of the art networked controllers allowing extensive monitoring and diagnostic capability including remote diagnostics. The Operator Console features intuitively organized switches which are labeled with standard ISO symbols making this a durable, easy to use, multi-lingual user interface.

The S600 features G&Z’s NoLine: Stringless Paving Preparation Kit. NoLine integrates the use of stringless technology directly into the S600 Operator Console and provides telescopic mounts for the total station prisms. Stringless paving technology is gaining wide spread market acceptance. As the bidding table gets more competitive, the need for innovative solutions to reduce job site costs is increasing. With the use of stringless technology, the contractor saves money on surveying, stake driving, and string set up making them more competitive in the market.

G&Z has always been a proponent for the use of a spreader plow over an auger on its paving equipment. A spreader plow safely moves more concrete, faster with less operating expense than an auger. The S600 features a spreader plow system that allows for easier width changes. Spreader track sections are aligned together by a dual pin connection and held together with a single bolt. Each spreader car track section is light enough where it can be handled by one person without the assistance of a crane.

As an option, the S600 can be fitted with G&Z’s proven trailing finishing pan and/or final finisher. Mounted off the rear of the paver under the rear walkway, the trailing finishing pan provides a proven method of finishing pavement surface and edges and ensuring that the product coming out the back of the paver is of the highest quality and smoothness.

The S600 is available with G&Z’s market leading Compact Dowel Bar Inserter (CDBI). The patented CDBI is a single, self-supporting module that mounts quickly on the rear of the S600. G&Z is the worldwide leader in DBI technology. The highly productive, mobile, reliable, and user friendly G&Z CDBI is designed to insert dowel bars accurately, make width changes and transport easily, and help achieve smooth rides. G&Z is also currently developing a new narrow profile DBI for the S600.

G&Z’s New Telescopic End Sections allow the contractor to perform width changes quickly and with fewer personnel. The Telescopic End Sections give the contractor 6 feet (1.8 m) of quick width change capability on both the G&Z S850 and S1500 Slipform Pavers. A width change which could typically take a four person crew no less than a full day can now be performed by one or two people in two hours. The new end sections can be specified as an option during the purchase of a new G&Z Slipform Paver or can be retrofitted to any existing G&Z Slipform Paver. The Telescopic End Sections will also be available as an option on G&Z’s New S600 Multi-Purpose Slipform Paver.

The G&Z Telescopic End Sections answer both the need for quick width changes as well as the ability to achieve smooth pavements. Giving up that smoothness to gain functionality was never an option when developing this new option. It has always been a source of pride for G&Z that its customers are confident in the smoothness produced by its rigid and high production slipform pavers. The G&Z Walk Box Allows Ground Level Track Control for Quick Width Changes

Guntert & Zimmerman (G&Z) is proud to announce the release of the New Walk Box. The G&Z Walk Box is a remote control that allows the equipment operator to control one set of tracks from the ground level. The Walk Box gives the operator the ability from the ground to “walk” the left or right tracks in or out to perform width changes. With the G&Z Walk Box, the operator has the capability to slowly and accurately move a side of the machine without ascending to the operator console.

The Walk Box can be connected to the Left or Right Track Pump Electric Displacement Control (E.D.C.)* on the G&Z S600, S850, S1500, PS1200, and TC1500 (TC850). When the Walk Box is in use, the speed and forward/reverse controls on the operator console will not work for the side being controlled. This innovative product has been designed to run on only a single AA battery.
