Admissions time... the dilemma of choosing the "Best" school

Its that time of the year !... yes the School Admissions time.. which in recent times becomes a stressful time for parents of toddlers.
As a parent I also faced what every parent goes through.. confusion, anxiety and stress when it comes to this tedious process of sending their little ones to the 'big' schools. The exhaustive processes of visiting the school, shortlisting the schools, filling up forms and the anxiety of final results gives us all many a sleepless nights.
We have seen parents preparing the kids, working with the playschools to enrich their skills to showcase in the interactive sessions or calculating how they are faring on the point systems. You are constantly haunted with questions like 'Which school is best for your child with respect to distance or curriculum' or 'which school has a better reputation' or ' how much fees do we have to shell out'
Finding answers and fitting yourself and your child into the admission parameters becomes not just days but months or even more longer task for all.

So how do you decide ?

As a parent myself and and connecting with parents across the city everyday, we all resonate the same feeling that our child is a piece of us and first and foremost we should be looking at where our child will be safest and loved and cared just like home. Where the kid will be enjoying and liking the hours he/she spends away from you.
At the child's age of about 3-4 years, should we be thinking how our child will fare in higher classes or which school claims to prepare the child for better career in future.

So probably a few parameters which can help us in finding our answers and choosing what is best for our kids could be :
- Safety & Security of the child at school.
Look at the safety setups at school wrt to policy guidelines. Check and question their setups and raise your concerns.
- Nurturing and encouragement of talents (scope of extra curruculars)
You must see what are the extra activities that are build into the everyday routines in early years to give a wholesome development to the child.
- Academic preferences ( Boards and academic strengths)
Selecting the curriculum that is right for your child actually makes a difference later in middle or senior years. For primary years seek where kids are learning holistically and not opressed under academics routines and exams
- Faculty and management backgrounds
Faculty competence and management outlook must be also considered as the teachers are your kid's care taker for many hours in the day and the way your child is taught not just academics, but morals, values and inclusiveness with all is a very important aspect of growing up for the child.
- Fee budgets

Yes, our pockets matter too. Finding the right school which fits your criteria and still doesn't pinch on your financials can be a tough decision.
- Distance from home
If you have access to reliable more of transport from your end or school transport system, distance should not be so much of an issue when it comes to the right institution for your child.

An important aspect to remember is choose what could work best for your child, not you. What worked for you decades back or fits best in your decision, may or may not be best for your child. So choose wisely and in relaxed manner... Don't worry and panic if it doesn't work best for the child in initial years. There is still a long way to go and you can change the school in later years for what works for your child best.

The Branded Metro Stations

The striking colours and big hoardings at our Metro stations are surely a different site from what we would expect at a metro rail station in India
It began with the privately operated Rapid Metro Gurgaon bringing in the concept of branding rights to corporates for each station and adding the extra jazz to the scenery of the city's Metro Stations apart from the additional revenues for them.

Rapid Metro stations began with the christening done as Vodafone Belvedere Towers Station, IndusInd CyberCity Station and the Micromax Moulsari Avenue.

The branding trend spilled over in the city to the Yellow Line of the Metro Line.

Apart from the Large Billboards and Concept looks to the stations, the bright colour schemes at few surely catch up your vision from a distance.
HUDA City Centre has recently become HTC Huda City Centre; IFFCO Station now is Honda 2-wheelers IFFCO Chowk, MG Road became SyskaLED MG Road, Sikanderpur is Bank of Baroda Sikanderpur, Guru Dronacharya is Indigo Guru Dronacharya.

The branding trend is not unique to our city metro. Many cities across the globe follow the concept of naming the stations with specific brands for a permanent basic.
But here we are yet to witness if this is a permanent nomenclature or we will see transition of branding across the stations.

We are also yet to see any particular ownership from brands come in for the newly operational Rapid Metro line Gurgaon South extension on the Golf course road. Lets see what novelty will that bring to the town !

It is that time of the year again especially for school students when they have to appear for their Final exams. And what starts building up is Anxiety.

What is Anxiety?

It is the feeling of fear, panic, worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome.

What is Exam Anxiety?

It can be defined as a state of uneasiness, nervousness, or distress before or during an exam and it often lowers performance.Exam anxiety is like an epidemic among students worldwide.

Symptoms of Exam Anxiety
1. Physical Symptoms:Be aware of Physical Symptoms like headache, tense muscles, nausea, fast heartbeat or trouble in breathing, cramps, sweating, dry mouth, shaking, "Butterflies" in the stomach etc.

2. Emotional Symptoms:

Exam anxiety does not only effect you physically but also emotionally you are caught by it. And this is something not to be ignored. Few symptoms that can help you become aware of emotional anxiety are anger, feeling of helplessness, hopelessness, depression, disappointment, excessive fear, crying or laughing uncontrollably and so on.

3. Cognitive Symptoms:

Exam anxiety also impacts on our cognitions / thoughts and this can have a lifelong effect on you. Few cognitive symptoms can be avoidance, getting distracted easily, racing thoughts, difficulty in concentrating, getting frustrated easily, blanking out answers to the questions even though you know the content and have the information, negative self talks....

Tips to reduce Exam Anxiety:
Preparation - Organization - Practice

Simple. I know this. This is common sense. Yes, it is but still most students suffer from Exam Anxiety. Moreover, it's not only about them it is also about their families experiencing the same anxiety. So, let us not only read these simple steps time and again and but also take actions accordingly.

1. Prepare: Be familiar with the syllabus. What all is covered for a particular subject. Focus more on topics which you do not know very well. Start preparing after having all the basic information about the exam with you such as

How many questions are normally asked in the exam for a particular subject.
How is the marking, score divided among the questions.
What format the questions are in (subjective or objective, multiple-choice)
What is the time duration of the exam.

2. Organize: Stay organized by creating a study plan that outlines what you are going to work on, how you are going to work on and when you are going to work on.

Ensure your study plan includes manageable tasks/goals for you to accomplish within a reasonable period of time.
Keep on checking yourself for getting distracted, procrastinating.
When you have accomplished a set task/goal, strike it off your schedule/plan so you experience a sense of achievement.
Keep a tab on your Negative Thoughts as these thoughts can throw you off your study schedule.

Few examples of negative thoughts :
- I always do poorly in exams.
- Others are far better and smarter than I am.
- If I do not pass, I am a failure.

To help yourself and be back on the track try replacing these negative thoughts with better positive thoughts such as: "I have a better study plan and schedule this time. I am well prepared. "
Whenever, you have these negative thoughts coming back to you again, remind yourself of all the positive thoughts, things, schedules you have in place for yourself.

3. Practice: Practice and Practice.

Time yourself and test your concentration level.
Keep on practicing until it starts to feel natural and effortless.
Make sure that all your studying and practicing is complete few days before the exams.

Few more tips to combat exam anxiety:

Practice breathing techniques that will help you stay calm and focused.
Keep all things required for an exam handy a night before so that you do not struggle finding them in the morning on the day of the exam.
Try to avoid coming too early or too late at the centre on the day of the exam.
If you find yourself "going blank" always remember that ACTION FIGHTS ANXIETY. Start jotting down whatever points come to your head on a paper. Once you start writing, you are more likely to recall whatever you have learnt. Take a deep breath and remember worrying is not going to do any good.
Do not rush to start answering the questions. Take few minutes to go through the question paper. Also remember that you can skip difficult questions and always come back to them later if there is time.
Take good six hours sleep before the exam day.
Have balanced diet during exams and if possible make it your habit. Healthy eating habits will prove to be a boon for you throughout your life.

Role of Parents, family members:
Family plays a very vital role in keeping the mood, attitude, thoughts, morale of the student positive. Do not let your anxiety pass down to your child. Keep the home environment lively and positive. Ensure that the child has proper meals at proper time. Keep the communication channels open between you and your child. Do not judge the child based on his previous performance or by comparing him with other siblings and/or friends. Do not pressurize the child with your expectation from him/her. Be with your children like a strong pillar and let them know that you believe, trust and love them unconditionally (No Conditions Applied).

Give your children a peck on the forehead and a warm hug before they leave for their exam.

If at all your child's exam anxiety levels do not come down, consider finding a coach to help him/her come out of it. This coach could be the parents, family member, a supportive friend, or an expert in the field.

“I’m 6 years old, a beautiful, little girl with black hair aboard a domestic flight. Dad and I. Looking out the window. The flight takes off now. The clouds look majestic. Some time goes on, but oh, wait, something’s not right! We have been asked to stay in our seats and put our seatbelts on. Everyone seems scared. Dad is asking me to stay calm and take deep breaths, before the announcement interrupts his voice: an emergency landing due to a technical glitch. I am afraid, crying, holding dad’s arm and deciding never to take the plane again.”- So spoke the 40 year old lady in her hypnosis session with me, having taken the first step to overcome her Fear of Flying. Earlier in the morning, she had talked to me about this fear becoming a hindrance in her life.

Interestingly, she knew that travelling by air is one of the safest modes of travel. But for her, flying was not flying. It was fear, anxiety and panic all rolled into one. Simply put, while it was easier to run away at the sight of a plane, it was not so feasible to do so, given the requirements of her job. This fear of flying had always been like an uninvited guest since a young age for her, but the reasons had always remained unknown. However, we soon discovered them in her subsequent sessions with me.

But you need not accept and start living with such fears in life. These can be worked upon, and this is just what we did: with the help of Clinical Hypnotherapy, suggestibility, and a tool that would allow her to induce a feeling of relaxation when she began to feel anxious, we worked upon her fear. The next time she visited me after about a month, she comfortably took a flight from Mumbai to Delhi.

Fears and Phobias are just one aspect of the success we have had. We have had immense success in areas like Fertility too. A couple who could not conceive for 13 years inspite of taking all mainstream treatment, were able to conceive just after a few sessions with us. Even an Autistic child started showing huge signs of improvement in her speech and behaviour after only a few sessions.

How to ensure that lines before banks disappear, noise of parliamentarians subside, subdued business activities grows fast and RBI / Banks & Govt. heave a sigh of relief?

The shameful acts if some of the bankers and corruption in the banking institutions, and inefficient, slow and unplanned distribution system of cash, have complicated the knots so much that it is necessary to think of solutions & solutions only, because roll back of demonetization is impossible after 35 days.
The hydra headed problem can be solved or at least the points of the public can be mitigated if Bankers reach the public. The ways to open the knots are:

1.Payments in villages should be made through Panchayats by the designated banks for the villages.
2.Payments to workers in the organised sector should be through the employers with the help of the banker where employer has the account.
3.Payments to workers in unorganized sector should be through their employer / contractor with the help of their bankers.
4.Small shopkeepers / self-employed / pensioners etc. should be allowed access to banks for withdrawing from bank on weekly / monthly basis preferably on weekends / holidays.
5.Panchayats, Employers, Contractors, must workout the forecast of their requirement on weekly /fortnights basis and forward to their bankers for arranging suitable funds.

The above suggested way is one way to solve and the other is to use “Chamre Ka Sikka” for at least six months to give relief to all.
