David Gurteen is visiting South Africa in October 2009

By David Gurteen

To: Gurteen Community Members in South Africa

I thought you might like to know that I will be speaking at the Iinternational Conference on Knowledge Economy (ICKE2009) at the IDC, Sandton, South Africa, 20-22 October 2009. This looks like being a great conference with several excellent international speakers such as Ng Kok Chuan, John Girard, Ron Young and Dan Remenyi and I hope to see several of you there :-)

I plan to stay a little long in Johannesburg and also visit Cape Town for a few days and if you would like me to give an internal talk, run a Knowledge Cafe, a Knowledge Cafe workshop or a Social KM Cafe for your organization or simply meet-up for coffee or dinner then please get in touch as I'd love to hear from you.

Best wishes David

Event: Implementing a Knowledge Cafe, 09 Sep 2009, London, United Kingdom

A one-day masterclass designed to help you:

Understand the importance of conversation in your business

Design and run Knowledge Cafés

Use Knowledge Cafés to solve specific business problems and challenges

Create opportunities in your organisation for creative conversation

Knowledge sharing is a key issue for business success but real knowledge sharing requires an open mindset and continues to be a challenge for many companies. One way of energizing an organisation to achieve real knowledge-sharing benefits is the use of Knowledge Cafés. A Knowledge Café is a face-to-face meeting, providing an effective vehicle for opening up discussions that lead to sharing. It can be employed as a tool to share tacit knowledge used within teams or Communities of Practice to question entrenched assumptions, help facilitate learning from others and gain a deeper, collective understanding of a subject through conversation.

It is not just about talking and networking, though these are secondary benefits, but allowing people to engage each other in "dialogue" with the aim of learning from each other rather than entering into unproductive debate and attempting to impose their views on the other which invariably end in failure and frustration.

Specifically, a Knowledge Café can it can be your easy, low cost way to make knowledge sharing work for your organisation by:

gaining buy-in for a new initiative

acquiring improved understanding of a complex issue

improving the way that people work together by gaining a deeper understanding of each others perspectives on issues

enabling a tacit transfer mechanism between young and retiring workers

facilitating the merge of two cultures after a take

In this workshop, you will get to understand the fundamental principals and benefits of the Knowledge Café process. You will go on to participate in a Knowledge Café, experience
the benefits first hand and reflect and discuss your experience.

The workshop is designed for anyone who is involved in developing a knowledge-sharing or more innovative culture within their organisation. You don’t need to be a professional facilitator but book today and you will leave the workshop understanding the power of the knowledge sharing and with the techniques to run to one.

within our organizations?

The Gurteen Knowledge Cafe
David Gurteen will start the evening by explaining the history of the Cafes; their purpose; their benefits and the process by which they are run.

He will then move on to run a knowledge cafe by briefly talking to the theme for the evening and facilitating the session.

David has run 100s of knowledge cafes over the last few years and they are really great learning and networking events. Everyone engages with the theme of the cafe and some tremendous insightful, energetic conversations take place. If you can make it - please do come along. You will not be disappointed. Better still the cafe format is one that you can take back with you and use in your own organizations to help create a more innovative culture.

Invite to free Gurteen Knowledge Cafe at Cadbury in BIRMINGHAM

By David Gurteen

To: Gurteen Knowledge Community Members in the Birmingham area

I regularly run Gurteen Knowledge Cafes in London and elsewhere but this time I am running one at Cadbury in Birmingham on Tuesday 4th August 6:00pm - 8:30pm thanks to Nancy Kinder who is hosting the event. The Cafe is free and if you are a Gurteen Knowledge Community member or even if you are not - you are welcome to come along for the evening.

If you would like to attend please register here where you will also find more details; the address of the venue, a map and directions to get there.

The theme of the evening is "What is the business role of conversation both face to face and virtual and how do we encourage more productive conversations
within our organizations?"

I will start by explaining the history of the Cafes; their purpose; their benefits and the process by which they are run and then move on to run a knowledge cafe by briefly talking to the theme and facilitating the session.

If you are not familiar with the Cafe concept you can learn more here. I have run hundreds of them over the last few years and they are really great learning and networking events. Everyone engages with the them and some tremendous insightful, energetic conversations take place.

If you can make it - please do come along. You will not be disappointed. Better still the cafe format is one that you can take back with you and use in your own organizations to help create a more innovative culture.

Best wishes David

Date: 22 - 23 Jul 2009
Organizer: ERM (Environmental Resources Management)
Location: International

In these cost constrained times where budgets for expensive and elaborate safety change programs are being cut back it is important to focus on what you can do to maintain and improve safety performance on a reduced budget. Over the past two years ERM has developed an award winning and truly innovative intranet site called ‘Minerva’ which has played an instrumental part in transforming the safety performance of ERM across the globe.

This on-line workshop will demonstrate specifically how the design, implementation and everyday use of the intranet has helped to communicate, engage and excite ERM’s staff about safety issues and drive improvements in safety performance at ERM. If you are keen to find out how you can upgrade your HSE intranet site so that it is a positive force for change then this event will be perfect for you.
Job: Head of Fraud Information Sharing

A government agency seeks a Head of Fraud Information Sharing. This role will directly contribute to the strategic aims of the organisation by delivering the outcomes and objectives on better information sharing. This will require a senior lawyer to develop and coordinate the capability of the counter fraud community to exchange information on fraud, fraudsters, the causes and consequences of fraud in order to better direct the national response.

We are seeking a Solicitor or a Barrister who:
- understands and appreciates the strategic importance of information sharing and effective knowledge management;
- has a strong grasp of the technical and legal approaches and challenges of sharing fraud information (including intelligence based information) within and between all sectors of the economy, both public and private
- is able to influence stakeholders to change working practices for improved performance across government; and
- Can communicate results effectively to a wide audience without losing context or rigour.

A large part of the role will involve engaging with and influencing a wide range of external stakeholders including law enforcement agencies, regulators, national and local government, private sector bodies and international partners in order to establish and develop a clear understanding of:

- the legal and regulatory environment that directs or constrains the exchange of information between counter fraud stakeholders
- the technical and resourcing challenges faced by stakeholders;
- organisational priorities and practices within stakeholders.

The post holder will engage in a number of self or team directed projects and activities: prioritised to challenge inertia; remove obstacles and identify solutions delivering effective information sharing.

One of the key functions of the post will be to engage constructively with key stakeholders. This will sometimes involve either meeting, or arranging events involving stakeholders and the post holder will, therefore, occasionally need to travel nationally and internationally and sometimes to work outside of normal office hours.

The post holder will require current security clearance (or the ability to obtain and retain) up to Developed Vetting level, therefore you must be a British citizen you has resided in the UK for at least the last five years.

TFPL operates as both an employment agency and an employment business.

If you do not hear back from us within 2 working days, then unfortunately your application has been unsuccessful.
