Indie Royale Does it Again!

Well, I'll be damned: Indie Royale has come out with a second great bundle in as many weeks. The Lunar Bundle features 4 great games for less than six bucks!
For a long time we have looked at Indie Royale as just a bundler to pass the time while waiting for the next Humble Bundle to come out but lately IR has been kicking some royale ass. Pid has been on my Steam wishlist for some time and this is a great chance to pick it up along with recent release Dungeon Hearts, the great (I have played it) Cargo Commander and the complete Back to the Future game series. I cant wait to see what the 3 bonus games are! So go on and get em while they are hot.. and cheap... like a good date!

New Giana Sisters Game is Out Today

Back in the late 80's while everyone was jumping, block bashing, fire-balling, and coin collecting their way through Super Mario Brothers on their low-brow Nintendo Entertainment systems I was snobbily jumping, block bashing, fire-balling, and GEM collecting in Great Giana Sisters on my high performance fire breathing Amiga 500. Sure, I'm pretty damn sure that the layout of the first level of GGS was exactly the same as SMB's, but it sure looked and sounded better. Well. that's all I wanted to say. Thanks for reading.

Oh wait, there is a point to this. Today a new Great Giana Sisters adventure, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams will be made available on Steam!

This is no remake but a true sequel to the original Great Giana Sisters game that us geezers know and love. They have kept the original side-scrolling gameplay intact but with beautiful graphics and animation. Gameplay looks pretty darn smooth as well. Most likely I will end up checking this one out so look for a gameplay video and I will be sure to mention it on the next episode of G2B.

Most reviewers agree that while it was nice to see Cannon Fodder 3 released, the sequel lacked the heart of the first two games. It looks like the folks at Iceberg Interactive have found it in their Cannon Fodder tribute game Tiny Troopers. Mac Steam News: All That's Unfit to Print

A few Steam tidbits for both of you Mac gamers out there (don't flame me, I'm one of ya brotha')

Counter Strike Global Offensive went online last week and appears to be working fine. I also have it under good authority that it works WONDERFULLY with the Macbook Air's Intel HD3000i and 4000i based systems even though it is not listed in the HCL. Seen it with my own eyes folks: it's silky smooth without changing settings! I'll try to pry Jonah away from it long enough to get a screen recording of it this week.

Supreme Commander 2 and Shank may appear on your available games list but they are not playable just yet. Although both games have been available on the Mac for freakin' ever it appears that Steam users are just going to have to wait a while longer to get them. Release does appear imminent however.

Tiny Troopers arrived on Steam without much fanfare this week. The game pays tribute to Amiga's excellent squad based action game Cannon Fodder and is by many accounts a much better game than the recently released Cannon Fodder 3. Considering you cannot play CF3 on the Mac yet I think that is a pretty good deal.

Din's Curse, an action RPG by local favorite Soldak Entertainment showed up on Steam this week with the usual 10% off. We played the demo awhile back and liked it quite a bit. You could definitely do worse than this one.

Finally we have AVSEQ, one of those pretty audio puzzle games. I'm sorry I don't show much enthusiasm: It really looks quite good. I just have had enough puzzle games for awhile. If I manage to get a review copy on it I will do an update.

5 Great Games for the iCade

I love the the iCade. There are some games that just don't feel right with a virtual pad, and iCade provides that much needed joystick for controlling arcade games that really, really need tactile feedback to get some serious game on. Following is my “short list” of games that are a blast to play with this device, and most other game pads too. So scrape a few bucks together, grab a beer (or 2), dust off your iCade and try these 5 good 'uns, and no, I'm not mentioning Atari's Greatest Hits, most of you have that already... and it's kind of crappy. Got that beer yet? Yeah? Well then hit that More button below and let's get going!

Goat Up: There are 2 types of people out there: People who love Jeff Minter games and all of you loser jag bags out there. I for one think he was one of the best developers back on the C=64 and is one of the best devs on the iPad today. Take Goat Up for instance: Start with 1 goat who can move left, right and jump, add a vertically moving game field with platforms full of grass to eat and dozens of objects to collect. Finally include perfect dead on controls with or without the iCade and you have an instant winner. The retro graphics add ambiance to the excellent game play and combined with iCade make you feel like you are in a miniature version of the arcades of the 80's. There is so much nuance to this game it's hard to believe he cranks these things out so dang fast.

Muffin Knight: Great graphics combine with smooth gameplay to make an excellent single screen muffin-collectin' platformer. The real hook to the game is the massive amount of upgrades and unlockable characters available. While the touch controls are neigh impossible the frustration ends and the fun begins once you hook up the iCade and get down with some hardcore arcade fun. Also check out the similar but much harder game Super Crate Box.

Forget-Me-Not: A Pac-Man RPG? What kind of crazy mind comes up with this stuff? And what a great idea! Wander around the maze gobbling up dots, killing monsters and collecting the key to escape each randomly generated level. The built in swipe controls work quite well, but playing Forget-Me-Not with the iCade is an UnFORGETable experience. Great stuff.

Dynamite Jack: This stealth based top down bombastic action game is darn near impossible to put down once you start playing. Avoid or destroy the guards blocking your way out of an underground prison mining complex. Simple to play, hard to beat. A classic graphics style combines with modern lighting effects to make a sinister play experience. Includes a level editor to create your own levels and share with others. One of the best iPad games out there. Period.

Super Ox Wars: Jeff Minter is one of those guys that “gets” gaming on the iPad. The man cranks out games for the device at an astounding rate, and each one is better than the last. This is probably why 2 of his games make my short list. Super Ox Wars is a top down collect-em-up shooter with an 8 bit aesthetic combined with a pixel-perfect control scheme. This game has it all: looks, great sound and tight gameplay. A wide variety of enemies and that classic Llamasoft style make Super Ox Wars an instant classic. It really plays well on the touch screen, but its obvious Minter spent a lot of time getting things right on the iCade as well.

So ends my short list of great games for the iCade. There are plenty of great games for the device that did not get mentioned here, but we mention them from time to time on the podcast and here at GuysGamesandBeer.net. Also make sure to check out the official iCade supported games list for a full catalog of iCade compatible games.

It's Official: Black Ops is FINALLY Coming to the Mac

...Just in time for BO2 to come out for everyone else. I hate to whine, (oh who the hell am I kidding, I love to whine) but wouldn't it be great if they just released the second Black Ops game in line with the PC? *sigh*. Anywho there has been some speculation about the release since Steam's guts poured out a Mac listing for the game last week. Now Aspyr has confirmed Black Ops for release this Fall. OK, I really kind of wish my personal favorite MW2 had been ported first:
I think the actual emphasis on in game communication made that game the best in the series but the run and gun action of Black Ops comes in a close second. So I'm glad its coming. As far as MW3 goes they can leave that thing on the XBox where it belongs... Yuck.

I wonder how this will effect the strong (and Mac heavy) Modern Warfare gaming community. It's been a long time since the Mac has seen the Call of Duty love and I can only guess that Mac users will swarm to Black Ops like flies on a warm poopy. A year from now will there still be enough interest in old, creaky COD4 to scrounge up a good free for all? I sure hope so. 'Cause as much as I love a shiny new game, I'm still an old schooler at heart.

Is That Dynamite in Your Pocket or Are You Just Happy to See Me?

Those of you who follow the show (both of you) know that Dynamite Jack gets a whole lot of love from both the Mac and the PC side of the aisle. Well now you can get your bomb-on on the go because DJ is now available for the iPad.

If you have not read any of our earlier ramblings on this game, Dynamite Jack is an excellent old school Bomberman meets Metal Gear mashup.

The basic premise of the game is to locate your flashlight and dynamite, avoid or bomb the living heck out of the enemies on each level, collect any goodies and escape. I found the game to be simple to learn, fun to play, and hard to put down. Once you are done with the built-in levels you can create and share your own as well as play ones made by other gamers. The editor is very easy to use and I was able to make a fairly complex level in about 15 minutes.

For about the price of a Starbuck's coffee you can get a great game with crisp graphics, a serious yet fair challenge and excellent, tight controls. Oh yeah... the controls... I'm happy to report that a whole lot of thought has gone into the control system on this game. You can choose to control Jack by drawing a line for him to follow kind of like flight control or use a floating virtual stick to move him around: the floating virtual stick is nice because it tracks your finger's movements no matter where you are on the screen as opposed to a small only set area. What is good about this is that there (obviously) is no tactile feedback on a virtual stick so your finger tends to slide away from the center of the detection area decreasing accuracy. Floating virtual sticks compensate for this. The iCade is fully supported and I consider this is among the best games you can play on it.

I was a little worried about how well this game would work on the iPad because of the serious need for accurate controls in Dynamite Jack and the iPad's long list of barely controllable action games. Having spent a few hours playing I am happy to say Hassey Games has done an excellent job of bringing this game to the small screen. Recommended.

Pretty much my entire youth was spent blasting asteroids, slaying dragons and chomping dots while being pursued by flickering ghosts. Oh the memories... I honestly cannot remember a time before Atari existed and now the company that practically invented the home console market is 40 years old.

Drox Operative is Really Pretty Cool!

OMG It's Diablo... In Space! OK, well that IS an over-simplification, but the Drox Operative is indeed a starship based RPG shoot-em-up being developed by Soldak Entertainment, the guys who gave us Kivi's Underworld and Depths of Peril. In the past I have played Kivi's Underworld and Depths of Peril and found them competent, but I never really got too much into them. Drox Operative on the other hand is a completely different beast.

Even though it's still in beta it is really, REALLY difficult to pull yourself away from this game. We are about 20 hours in and still finding new goodies all the time. Drox features 10 playable races all with different ships with differing advantages and disadvantages. One of the things I really like is that you can create a new ship and continue the same universe with it instead of starting all over. Online and LAN multiplayer are included and are pretty well implemented. The universe is dynamically generated so you never play the same game twice. Soldak loves to create games with multiple factions vying for control and did a fairly decent job of building tension in Depths of Peril, but it always felt not so much tacked on as just a "neat feature". In Drox Operative this tension feels like part of the game's DNA. I think this game is going to very well received. We will be getting a video preview together later on in the week so stay tuned, and we will be bringing it up on Episode 9 of GTB. You can pre-order Drox for $15.00 from their website and play the beta now.

Wasteland 2 will use the Unity Engine

Wasteland 2 Kickstart supporters were surprised with a lengthly announcement about Wasteland 2's selection of the Unity 3 Engine for the loooong awaited sequel to 1998's hit post apocalyptic RPG Wasteland. iNXile Entertainment sighted the need for cross platform compatibility and the top - down point of view as reasons for the decision. The fact that Unity will make it easier to allow user-created content also ranked high among the reasons.

I for one don't mind the decision at all. Unity can so pretty impressive graphics, and the turn based nature of the game should not stress Unity's capabilities too far. The complexity of the game should not be effected and it should run on most major operating systems without too much tweaking. Now they may even be able to make an iPad version to take the Apocalypse on the road with you. This could also add a huge amount of legitimacy to the idea of using the platform for creating high quality games.

Casual Gamer? Really??

I hate the term “casual gamer” as it is used today. Back when I was a kid, before the wheel was invented and we ran to school everyday because Pterodactyls would pick us off if we moved slowly, there were “gamers” and “non-gamers”. You know: folks that played games and folks that didn't play unless forced. Now we have lots of gamers all over the planet and excellent games all over the place. Gaming has become a mainstream hobby. So now of course some elitist shmucks have to ruin things by declaring certain game types as for the “hardcore” and others as not.

I'm going to say this clearly so that some of the sledge heads out there can understand. THE TYPE OF GAME YOU PLAY DOES NOT DETERMINE HOW “HARD CORE” YOU ARE. The time and experience and effort you put into the game is what makes you hardcore. I know some guys that play Battlefield 3 every once in awhile. They are not hardcore players. Some play an occasional RPG, still not hardcore. You CAN be a hardcore gamer and play these games, but it's your enthusiasm for them that makes you a serious gamer. So if you really love puzzle games, you study up on how to get the best combos to improve your score, then you could well be one hell of a hardcore Bejeweled player.

I'm not saying that certain genres tend to attract the hardcore: this is certainly true. I would guess that hardcore players do tend to play FPS's and RPG's. It's just that it is not a requirement. What was hardcore 15 years ago was platformers and shooters. They were definitely NOT casual. Games like Blood Money and Ghosts n' Goblins will chew you up and spit you out if you are not steady with a joystick. Let them kick you around for awhile and see how “casual” they are. It's an insult to these games that in some circles they would be lumped in as casual. Hell, they were the games that CREATED the term!

Well, I think I have ranted enough. In the end what I am saying is that the type of game you play does not indicate your dedication to the hobby. There have been hard core gamers since before there were beat 'em ups, FPS's and MMORPG's and there will be long after they have been replaced with the next big thing.

You Know What Really Annoys Me About the Vita?

I love my Playstation Vita, don't get me wrong. It has the right controls (you know, dual sticks maaan!), great console quality graphics and a large screen perfect for my aging eyes. It's just that, well I know things could be just so much better if a few things had gone a little differently. Here's my short list of what went wrong, and how things could get better.

The NAME
Vita. Really? I know, a rose by any other name and all, but VITA? I don't want my game system to be named flower, love bunny or cheese bread. I sure as hell don't want it to be called "life". Give me a break, it's a game system not an air freshener. Who thought this would be a good idea? I liked NGP myself. Or DEATHBRINGER!

Identity Crisis
When the Vita was officially announced June 6, 2011 I was excited. Sony touted a handheld that would finally bring the home console experience on the go. I could not wait to play online FPS's on my handheld while the kid hogged up the XBOX 360 on the big screen. Well guess what, I'm still freakin' waiting. There was not one FPS available on launch, and nothing will be out until the end of the month. Yeah there is Unit 13 (which I like btw) but that is a 3rd person shooter, not a first. One of the main selling points of the Vita was the dual analog sticks, Sony should have made a huge effort to make sure a big name FPS was there on launch. A lot of the games like Unit 13, Mod Nation, Little Deviants and (shudder) Ridge Racer are made for short gaming sessions. While there is nothing wrong with this, why are so many Vita games shrunken versions of what could be full length games? The Vita is really too big t shove in your pocket, and the battery life is not phenomenal. Let's release some games with depth, so I can play something meaningful on those sleepless nights, or while I'm waiting forever at the doctor's office? The 3DS does small games well, as does my iPad and cell phone. I need a reason to play the Vita as opposed to them. A console experience would go a long way.

Ridge Racer
I know. It was such a disappointment that it deserves it's own section. Hell, the iPad version of Ridge Racer is better than this. No real single player mode. Really? I have yet to find an actual online game either. Oh yeah, and it came with only 4 tracks. At least I got some more with the free download included in the package. Oh, and all the cars drive the same. This game never should have been released like this. If this were a homework assignment it would have earned an incomplete. It is a complete embarrassment to the Vita system. The RR series has been a high water mark for racing games until now. Bad. very bad.

No PSONE Games
Umm, I'd like to play Final Fantasy VII please.. and letting me play through some of those old playstation classics would really help round out those early release blues. Come on Sony, let me play them.

The Price
I am not from the camp that thinks that the Vita is terribly overpriced. It is premium tech and premium tech comes with a price tag, but Sony makes a lot of money on every unit. A drop in price may shake loose some consumers who have been waiting in the wings for a price drop and encourage more development for the system.

The Future
Sony created a solid piece of hardware with the Vita. It was well designed and powerful, with a whole lot of features. The Playstation Network has also come a long way and minus a few hiccups is supporting the system nicely, and rumor has it that any minute now PSOne games will arrive. Theres also a great selection of Minis and and PSP titles available for download right now. The first of the FPS's Resistance, should be here at the end of the month, and Modern Warfare is on the way this year. These games should give the Vita a much needed push in the right direction. As long as Sony keeps supporting the Vita, and promoting games that keep the system in the right light they should be in a good place a year from now.

Larry, fabled adventurer and discoverer of the long lost city of Lars, believes that he has finally discovered the ancient secrets used in the creation of the Mystical Pyramid of Lars. "I believe it has to do with these strange hooking devices I removed from the top of these construction cans." Larry stated, clearly pleased with himself while gesturing proudly toward the gleaming mound of pop caps he amassed. "I am clearly only a drink or two away from a major breakthrough". Good luck brother, success is close! I for one, still believe it was aliens though.
