Thats a photo above taken with the old regular GoPro Hero, With the announcement of the new GoPro Hero2, the game is changing and GoPro is stepping it up with their new release.

I was on a long debate figuring out if I wanted a Contour HD variant, Replay XD, or GoPro, but after the release of the Hero2, I've made up my mind. Watch the below video, and if that doesn't convince you, I'll explain my reasoning below.

Make sure you watch in HD!

Camera Optics

2X Sharper Professional Glass Lens
f/2.8 Fixed Focus
170º Wide FOV (Including 1080p)
127º Medium FOV (In 1080p)
90º Narrow FOV

Video

HD RESOLUTIONS:
1080p: 1920×1080, 30FPS
960p: 1280×960, 48FPS + 30FPS
720p: 1280×720, 60FPS + 30FPS

STANDARD DEFINITION RESOLUTIONS
WVGA: 848×480, 120FPS + 60FPS

If you haven't checked out the Replay XD, its a pretty cool system, but I think after watching videos online, and even on their site, both the Contour and GoPro beat it in terms of quality, haven't seen too much good video coming from that device yet. The next version will probably have a lot more features and better quality. Their mounting system and size is why I would probably pick up one possibly someday as an additional camera.

Contour Vs GoPro

First off, I wanted the best quality possible, and the GoPro Hero2 looks to win in that category. I wanted the ability to see what I was looking at via some sort of screen. GoPro has 2 options for that either via the screen backpack addon, or it can also stream video live with the Wifi backpack addon. Another additional accessory allows for the GoPro to hold 2 batteries at once. It takes regular SD cards and not micro sized pieces of plastic you feel like your going to snap. It already comes with a fully waterproof case. While the Contour has most of these features, they are spread through several models and some dont have what others should. I like that GoPro is keeping to one model of camera and using the accessory port to tailor to its customer needs.

I usually cover drifting events at Pacific Grand Prix, but on the 23rd PGP held a free super moto lapping day of sorts, and had a HUGE turnout.

Drivers of all age had the oportunity to drive around the twisty track and have a ton of fun while doing it.

Check out all the drivers! Even the owners of the track were surprised at the huge turnout!

Go-Kart intermissions were held all day and kept people buy having fun

I had never covered a super moto event in my life and this was a first. Nonstop shutter action is key, and I was snapping photos all day to try and make sure I got every driver.

It's amazing to see how low to the ground some of these drivers were getting around the tight hairpin turns.

Stopped for a bit to grab a bite and had some amazing burgers. Props to the cooks you guys make some awesome food!

Afterwards I got to the other side of the track where the younger riders were doing their thing.

Some of these young riders had some crazy lines going on! Its incredible to see such skill level in a young age.

This guy has done plenty of work on his scooter, and was passing quite a few of the bigger bikes. He saw my big white L lens and popped a wheelie for me haha.

You can check out all the photos from the event (over 400 since there were over 100 riders) by clicking the link below. Prints are available at low cost and feel free to share and save a copy for yourself/facebooke etc.

Headed down to IntecRacing in the early morning, look at new bulbs, and get the car dynoed up, because hey, everyone should know what their car is capable of.

Headed back to his house to chill for a bit, while we waited for Hell Ya Custom Coating to drop off the wheels off at the house. What a guy! excellent work and fantastic customer service.

Then it was off to get the tires mounted, checked out some nice Hankook rubbers while we waited.

Guy even took us where all the work happens to we could watch while Travis picked out some "new" tires for the wheels since apparently the old ones were falling apart.

Back at the house we got the pink and blue combos out of the car.

And with the help of his buddy got them mounted.

By this time we were fighting for daylight, so after some mandatory cell phone shots we hit the road to try and get at least one good rolling shot in on the highway.

The plan was to hit I-90 and beast up to the mountains, but we fell short of time and I managed to snag this shot with my 7D at ISO 3200!

By the time we had gotten done it was dark so we hit the road again and found a generic parking garage to snag some shots for the books.

Went out to Garage AutoHero a few weeks ago with AfroMat in the TT, fun car to drive around in, but has a few shortcomings like not bing able to hold a pizza, but thats about all. its a clean looking car and the rain was just starting to why not snap a few photos!

Up close of the front grill, I always think of the Olympics, anyone know the significance of 4 rings? All these shots were taken with my GF1, paired with a 14mm f2.5 lens. I've been using this lens more and more lately, and try and test it out as much as possible.

We met up with Yoshi of MotorMavens.com who had his awesome Yoshvan parked outside. More to come on this hopefully, Mat was filming on some crazy driving adventure we had a while later, hopefully we can get that uploaded.

Yoshi probably playing with some crazy cool app on his iPhone, but I think he has a secret love for Audi's

Took a quick trip to get some food, went with the awesome cheapness that it Little Caesars, cheap pizza that tastes pretty awesome for 5 bucks. Throw in a side of crazy bread and your set.

After getting through the intense line and parking, Up to the top of the parking garage, which was the location of choice for this show. Its always nice to see the familiar face and car, but there was plenty of new interesting things to see at this event.

Instant wallpaper! being in the right place at the right time, clean background and nothing too distracting.

This VW was one of the more unique cars at the event, and one of my favs! There's a few other detail shots in the full gallery, be sure to check those out.

And the overall "Best Stance" award taken home by Zach Dunn. Nice one man.

What's an event without competing DJ's? Sorry man, but the main guy had better taste in music. Nice cars though! :D

Spied this in the back of someones car, and a small group huddled around. Definitely not enough to spread around and share with hundreds of people.

Thanks again and always to NOS Energy, always with the free drinks and gorgeous server. NOS has shown much love for events in the pacific northwest, other drink companies can't compete with the level of attendance they show.

My friend recently picked up a Panasonic GH1 and got the 14mm lens with it, We traded and I gave him my 14-45mm. It was a good lens when I used it, and the image stabilization was suprisingly good, but I have been after a pancake lens for so long. Read ahead to check out my little testing tour around Seattle we took.

Here's my GF1, in all its iPhone camera glory. The new lens really gives it that old school film camera look, this has been a project camera for some time, and now its where I like how it looks, complete with leather wrapping. I got a filter for it, but if you look its almost a 3rd of the length of the lens! ha.

The files the GF1 produces are interesting to edit, and I notice some difference from editing RAW and JPEG files from my 7D. In a way it feels more fun, I dont know how to describe it. Click on any of the pictures to view in a larger size

The lens is definitely sharp, I was worried I wouldn't get the desired DOF with the 14mm as I would with the 20mm at 1.7 But one less stop is a small price to pay to have the nice wide view of the 14mm. Sharpness is very good, handheld focusing on these water droplets and still great depth of field.

There's a small hidden park where I shot this, did as long of an exposure as I could with the lighting conditions, you can see Bellevue in the distance.

If you look at this shot closely you'll see the reflections and then I'll tell you that I shot it out of a elevator, still maintaining great quality through half inch glass.

I had never walked to the end of this pier before but its a new view that I have never really seen before. Just looking at The Old Spaghetti Factory in the red brick building makes me hungry. Below is another shot of the same area, Pier 70. I am content with this lens, and cant wait to use it more.

Lot of new faces and new cars out on the track, (which if you still dont know is normally a go kart track :D, used for lapping and drifting) Lots of tight turns and technical entries on the track.

Also took this event and created a new editing technique that I am very satisfied with. A combination of effects to get cars to pop and give colors a sort of "animated look" The yellow car above best represents the changes.

Drivers Andrew Larson and Gleb Antonov getting their cars ready for the track. Tune in next article when Andrew throws his 350Z over a hill, the car is a tank, it's been through lots, and is a favorite among the northwest scene.

This salmon colored car was doing work the entire day until he bottomed out on the edge of the track and got stuck for a good 20 minutes while track workers brought in the big equipment.

I half expected benny hill to be playing the entire time as they tried rocking the car, using wooden planks, pushing, pulling.. Finally a truck was brought out and.... It didn't work. The next best thing comes in shades of yellow:

The driver looked on in horror as the big yellow machine barreled down the track, later a track flagger told me he had said said they were just going to punch through the windows and pick it up that was, heheh.
Awesome place to explore and had a few close calls toward the end.

The park is home to many trails and even a small military base, we chose to head to the beach first off and explore from there.

A ways down there was an old lighthouse in the process of being restored, and it was at this point that me and Michael discovered... The cliff. We had already noticed on the beach a ways down the small landslides made of clay, and this huge landslide begged us to climb it.

We started running down the beach, just because we had high energy and wanted to let it out and almost missed this baby seal who looked lost. or maybe he just wanted a sweet tan, had to whip out my camera and snap a few of this guy before he wandered back into the water to find his mother.

Brandi and my other friends Seth and Peter were forced to play in the clay for a while longer, as me and Michael took on the challenge presented before us.

I'd never tried to climb a landslide, and didn't know what to expect. We made it up the first part of the slide, it was a bit steeper than it looked. Clay is a bit slippery and made it a bit more difficult. In the above picture we were currently stuck at the near vertical top of the first climp, we ended up having to dig footholds for the rest of the way up in the hardish clay.

I had decided to take my 7D up with me on the climb as I had no idea where we would end up, iPhone photos only. I'm glad I ended up bringing my backpack bag rather than a shoulder bag. You can see us almost to the top in the above pictures and the 3 dots that were our other friends at the bottom.

Once we reached the top, all thought of taking pictures was gone. It was simply the most incredible view of mother natures power I had ever seen. Clay formations that looked like stone were everywhere, the entire land mass we were walking on was slanted, and filled with cracks. If you take a look at the above picture you can see that the entire side of the mountain slid off, and created the land we were walking on. We had decided to travel toward those cliffs and search for another way we could get down.

It's a surreal feeling walking on rough clay terrain with all trees slanted from the fall. The landslide had taken all trees and brought them down with it, we were walking through a slanted forest. We encountered quick sand 5 times and again when we finally found a way down. clay ooze had covered what was left of the beech and made walking back difficult. I need a helmet cam and to go back and record everything we walked through.

Working till 1:00am is never a good thing. I got home after work and was in bed and asleep by about 3, leaving 4 hours till my desired time to get up and leave for the Golden Gardens car meet... With most people showing up at 8:00.

My alarm woke me up bright and early, 10:30am, wait what?! AH #%&$@!!! The year before the exact same thing happened. I was out the door with my gear in less than a minute, and then went back inside to get some pants.

The drive down was fast and as I got close I could see quite a few cars that decided to leave early, but plenty of cars still left when I arrived. I decided against parking my Accord in with the rest, and parked it by a cop who was pulling people over who thought they could drift around one of several great corners.

The event was put on in part by Northwest Nissans, and the parking lots were packed, cars driving around and the occasional tourist trying to find a parking spot and wondering what was going on.

I shot what interested me, many great looking cars out there and events like these are always great to just tune in your skill behind the lens. I'm not one of those people who shoots every stock 240 there is and post them all, I shoot what looks good or interesting. If you want to get coverage, you can't look like the rest, gotta set yourself apart!

The event started dying down in the afternoon, but not before NWN had their raffle, some sweet prizes given out, and the announcement of the winner of the Formula Drift Sponsorship, Walker Wilkerson. Good luck out there Walker!
Some people hate rain, but a photographer faces rain head on with a bag over his camera. That was the sight at this event, pretty much every media person was sporting a camera condom to get through the day.
The day started out like any other Washington day it seems, dark coulds and rain. The afternoon let up a bit and the light turned fantastic for a few and backed off. but not before I snagged this next shot below, perfect light all around.
It was nice to see this RWD converted STI back again for more sliding. I always make it a point to try and get at least 1 good tandem shot, and I got one and more, the below is one of my favorites from a series, Ya 8FPS!
Or Rent-A-Cops

You need This document inside your camera bag, print it out and shove it in there.

If any of you have ever shot photos in public places, you may have stumbled upon a federal building in the background, or any building for that matter and gotten yelled at by some security guard or maybe even talked to by police. A recent document has surfaced courtesy of the New York Times, the specifically details what police and security forces can or cant do to you.

Funny how they didn't want the public to see this.

Click on for more...

Says it right there in the first line, no laws currently exist prohibiting from shooting federal buildings while standing in a public area.

This document should always be part of a photographers camera bag, view the whole things and print it out Here.

Joe McNally and David Hobby. If you don't know those names then you probably should pay more attention to the industry. Joe has been in the industry quite a while, and never carries less than a truckfull of speedlights. David is the brains behind Strobist.com, helping people around the world take control of their flashes in creative ways.

Flashbus Tour 2011 will start in Seattle of all places so I hope to be there to learn a thing or two from these guys, check out all the other info over here: http://www.theflashbus.com

As the year comes to a close I've started going back through all drifting events I've gone and photographed and doing another edit. I have developed a few new ways to edit photos and I have been really pleased with the end result.

Some of my favorite shots have been selected to go into a brand new wallpaper gallery, from Formula Drift Round 4 "Throwdown" at evergreen speedway, to local events at the track and pacific grand prix.

In addition to this, I'm adding some new driver galleries, original sized images for downloading and sharing. I have learned a lot this season and I look forward to seeing all the cars back next year, and any upcoming car shows.

I've decided not to make a size for different monitor sizes, (we should stick to one ratio really) but rather settle for a wide screen size, never a fan of how square a 1024x768 monitor looks either, 16x9 is where it's at.

Click on any picture above or select from the below list. Expect more images and galleries in the upcoming weeks. If you know one of the drivers, please share and let em know Gwag sent yeh!

The snow is gone, but having a giant snow dump before thanksgiving in Washington is a rare occasion by itself. The above picture is a few hours before I left work on monday, on the roof looking toward Boeing.

What started as a gentle snowfall turned into a wind/snow/ice combo that would turn my normal 15 minute drive into a long 0mph top speed, 4.5 hour quest to get home. A single intersection with about 20 stalled cars who were futzy enough to not put chains on basically backed up an entire city to a deadlock...

Went with some friend to a local park where there was plenty of untouched snow about.

On the way back we figured that if you combine a truck, rope, boots with no tread, and neighborhood streets with half inch of snow pack equals snow surfing. My and my buddy being dragged laughed at the passing head that did a double take as we slid past them.

Here's me with two of my good friends looking like a total futz staring away at my eggnog and rum, I title this picture, "There's fuzz in my drank!"

We invented a new variant of beer pong called Tri Pong, a fast paced insano game which I guess is kinda like quarters but with ping pong balls. Good times.

At this rate I'm expecting another snowstorm, I definitely need to make it up to the mountains and get back on my board. Been way to long.

Woke up this morning to the white flurries spittin about, a nice welcome to the joke of a storm we had yesterday, no camera with my so out comes the good ol iPhone loaded with The Hipstamatic app.

I spent a couple minutes before work just shooting for a bit, I regret not getting out and photographing last years snow so this year I made a goal to change that.

Even in a parking garage it's surprising how many good shots you can find, I was getting down low for most of them.

Favorite shot. Looks like a window through the trees. The gate to Boeing in the background along side the main road.

It's been a long time since I've gone out with my camera and shot a still car. I'm used to them flying past me over 50mph and hoping my focus is keeping up. This is why I'm so used to fast paced photography and the slower tedious work was definitely a good break from the norm.

The day started around 3:00pm in what I refer to as the industrial part of Tacoma. The only easy way to get there besides walking across the closed 11th street bridge is the roundabout way from I-5 or coming from the back. This area is full of countless backgrounds, buildings, and textures that I have used on several portrait shoots. It's a great location and there is always something new to explore.

This garage has been shot a ton, and its no brainer why. Covered in graffiti its home to countless car shoots and portrait locations, so naturally I had get in on the action. Garage was full around 5:00 when we arrived and went to get some food. PSP (Puget Sound Pizza) serves some of the best freshly cooked pizza I have had and its work checking out if your in the area. Both the garage and PSP are within walking distance of each other and is located in the south end of Tacoma.

First time as well that I brought out my lights. I tend to dwell in natural light and generally like how it "can" look better, but at the same time external lighting allows you to get more creative in your work. I tend to go the route of McNally and use speedlights vs. lugging out battery packs and power cords. Set up and tear down time was under 20 minutes.

I used a simple setup with 2 lights and a gelled third light to add some color. Cybersync's to trigger everything, if you haven't checked out these things or think pocketwizzards are to large, take the time to look them up. Half the cost and just as durable, these things have about half the range as well but I'm not lighting a helicopter or anything.

As far as editing goes, I tend to go crazy with editing. This shoot allowed me to experiment with a variety of editing techniques. I used Adobe Lightroom with final editing done in Photoshop.

The above photo is a prime example of how waiting a while longer can create stunning work. I was in Tacoma at my friends shop for a while during the rainy weather. It was sunny when I left my house but the clouds decided to roll in right as I stopped being a lazy bum.

The rain let up for a bit and I was able to get out and take some shots for a book I'm working on, but as I got into my car and drove toward the highway, I passed the bridge and saw the incredible glowing city you see above. I have a feeling that the pollution down there plays a part in how great Tacoma sunsets look, and for that I say pollute away!

I have to share this, its an amazing piece of work. For someone who is a huge fan of WWII movies, you know, the (IveWatchedBandOfBrothersOver20Times Type) This video is no exception, written, directed, shot, and edited by, Marlon Torres, its worth teh watch. Also check out the Vimeo Link to read more about the film.

In addition, check out my Recreation Shots of WWII and the Vietnam War. Ive been asked before If they were colored shots from the 40's, another if I had a time machine. That's just silly. I do have a lead encased bunker 20 stories down below my house undetectable from government satellites, but that's another story.

" />

So I started one. It's nothing new, many photographers are doing it, have done it. One unique photo, everyday for an entire year. For me it was more of a mission to see how I improve over the course of 365 days. I'm on day 15 so far and its been a fun experience thus far. I highly encourage any photographer to try something like this, just don't fall into the hole of laziness. Get creative now, all day and let yourself find a shot you've never seen before. Read on to see some of my favorite shots, and how I took them. All shots so far have been taken using my Panasonic GF1 with a 14-45 lens.

This shot was taken at my desk, where a few other shots have been and probably will be taken. I used what was within my grasp, apparently I was glued to my chair and couldn't make the 10 foot to my equipment shelves for anything else. The background is my computer screen, makes for a good backdrop when shooting with glass. the front of the bottle was lit with my iPhone using some flashlight app. How's that for DIY lighting.

This was a fun adventure, as I occasionally drive myself around Stevens or Snoqualmie Pass. Took one of the exits near Easton, drove about 2 miles down the road to the middle of nowhere. Parked along the side of the its to the right up the hill in the picture, and found this gorgeous view. There's a park a ways down and a single house, but other than that your alone, and nothing but the sound of water and wind in the trees. This was taken with 1 single shot, with a lot of dodging and burning afterward in PS4.

This was one of those shots I took on the fly at the last minute and it ended up being a fun learning experience. I think this was on the pier I took on a lunch break from school. Messed with the color afterward in Lightroom to give it sort of a film look. a bit change from the bland gray snap I started out with.
