Since this blog is public what better place to offer them. I hope my readers enjoy this short side trip.
All Content Copyright © 2012 Ne-Do-Ba

U-ta-wa-un - Illustrated

Well, this may be the last of the Indians in Paris series, but then again it may not. Let’s see what the future brings.

Today I am sharing a number of cartoons found in the New York and Paris media in 1867 which may be directed at my good friend U-ta-wa-un. The humor of the times is often foreign to me. I don’t understand everything, but perhaps some of my readers will. In any case, it is interesting to find these items and fun to share them.
All Content Copyright © 2012 Ne-Do-Ba

Recent Favorites (weekly)

This person contacted me after doing an internet search on the name U-ta-wa-un. He offered to provide me with a copy of a pair of photos from a larger collection of “Indian” photos and told me I could do with them as I pleased.

I was just blown away when the copies of the photos arrived in my e-mail box. I think my readers will enjoy them as much as I do. The second photo will appear in my next post.
All Content Copyright © 2012 Ne-Do-Ba

Indians in Paris (part 5)

Today’s post is nearly the last (until I learn something new ;-) in a short series providing data for the American Indian presence in Paris, France in the year 1867. There will be at least two more posts containing a wonderful surprise.

Today’s post will cover everything (well, most of the good stuff anyway) I found in Paris concerning the presence of Native Americans in Paris in 1867.

I found books, images, news clippings, and scholarly works online and free. This is just a sample of the better resources available. I am amazed at the number of online resources I have located. Ten years ago this same research would have been impossible for me to accomplish. The time and cost involved in travel, communication, and copying materials the old fashion way can quickly become prohibitive. In the current age, I sit in the comfort of my home with the world at my fingertips - literally. For historians (especially those with disabilities or limited finances), this is certainly the best of times.
All Content Copyright © 2012 Ne-Do-Ba

Recent Favorites (weekly)

It is time to get back to business. Since I am waiting on the arrival of deeds from Chautauqua County, New York, I decided to finish up my Indians in Paris mini-series.
It has been many months since I last wrote on this subject so readers may want to review the earlier articles.

#1 Many of your ancestors may not have known how to spell their own names.

#2 Many people were known only by a nickname and never used the name they were given at birth.

#3 They wrote what they heard.

#4 The use of a family name or surname varies from culture to culture.

#5 The pool of names used by any given family or culture may have been very small

#6 The way a name was spelled was unimportant until industrialization.

#7 Changes in governments sometimes changed names

#8 Immigrants often changed either the spelling of their name or their name entirely.

don't count on anyone, anywhere at anytime having a consistently spelled name

If we want to protect the integrity of our authentic Indian made arts and crafts, it is urgent that everyone contact their Congress people and insist they stop these changes.

They are also claiming
tribes mentioned in history books no one has heard from in 200 years.
These fakes join together to form fake tribes and several states have
granted recognition to them without one iota of authenticity. The fakes
sell art as Indian made, teach a bastardized Indian culture in schools
and to the public.

Names can be
spelled a hundred different ways. Get over it. Spelling variations are a
fact of life for genealogists. Get over it. Some of you ancestors
didn't know the "proper" spelling of their own names. Get over it. Your
ancestors likely changed the names or the spelling of their names when
they moved to a new country. Get over it. The way names were spelled did
not become codified until well into the 19th Century. Get over it. Some
of your ancestors likely changed their names to avoid creditors, their
family, their church, or their enemies. Get over it. People still change
their names today. Get over it.

you will eventually find evidence of your native ancestors if there actually are any in your family tree.

High cheekbones are not a sign of Indian ancestry. There are plenty of Europeans with high cheekbones.

Photographs of ancestors in Native American garb are not evidence either. How many times have you been to a fair or carnival where there is a booth for you to dress up in period clothing to have your photograph taken.

I recently received inquires from two different directions about the family and a new item to work with. I thought this would be a good time to take a fresh look at the family.
I would like to thank my good friend Salmon for locating Item 1 and bringing it to my attention.
It is so wonderful to have these descendants showing an interest in their family history and so willing to share what they learn. We are learning from each other as we explore the Kanistanaux family from different perspectives.

I decided to educate myself a little in the art of dating old photos. The subject is simple in some ways and very complex in others. I decided not to try to teach my readers the process, but simply to share the highlights. I will include some links to sites I found useful.
All Content Copyright © 2012 Ne-Do-Ba

Recent Favorites (weekly)

It helps to understand the subject on a personal level and sometimes suggests other places to look for information.

I don’t plan to write blog posts for every single item I explore during this research project, but this one seems to lend itself well as a teaching tool. Working with oral history is a slippery slope, so I will be sharing some concerns and techniques.
All Content Copyright © 2012 Ne-Do-Ba

Recent Favorites (weekly)

during this early period, images tended to be romanticized, especially when dealing with historical imagery. This can leave us with false representations of our ancestors’ lives. Instead of these types of images, museums can be a great resource for you.
