Hi Everyone!

So far this school year has been going great! I am involved in Gwynedd's CLL program and it was the perfect choice for me. With working full time at Doylestown Hospital, the CLL program has really made it easy for me to get my school work done without feeling too overwhelmed after starting my new job.

CLL is Gwynedd's adult working program where students meet in class once a week for four hours and work towards getting there Bachelors or Masters degree. CLL offers many different degrees, not just in nursing but business, marketing, and many others. There are campus located in many different areas including Philadelphia, so even if you cannot make it to main campus there may be one close by in which you can attend.

The faculty in great and it really helps that they are the same professors that teach at Gwynedd's main campus. They are knowledgeable and always make themselves available if you have a question or problem about any assignment.

So, I think its safe to say that CLL was a perfect choice for me and fits into my schedule well. I am excited to see what else it has in store for me. I start my clinical rotation soon for Hospice care and I think it would be interesting to get a look into this type of nursing.

I will keep you all updated so check back soon!

Finally back in the states! Just after graduation I had the amazing experience traveling to Brescia, Italy as a part of Gwynedd's study abroad program. We were in Northern Italy just about an hour away from Milan, and Brescia proved to be such a cute little city. Our first weekend there Brescia had their annual Internatin Market where they would fill the squares with tents inspired by different countries through out Europe. They would serve foods, drinks, and clothes from their respective countries and it was a great place to go bother during the days and evenings.

While taking our Italian language and Philosophy classes Monday through Thursday we had the chance to meet with many of the Italian students that attended the high school. We asked them what they thought of Americans and our culture and we were able to answer their burning questions of what life was really like in the US.

The best part was having the opportunity to travel on the weekends. We went to Florence, Pisa, Rome, Venice, and Verona. Every single place was amazing and full of so much history. The buildings had the most amazing architecture. I am so happy I was able to be a part of such an amazing trip. Here are a few pictures!

Gwynedd's Italy trip was amazing and I would definitely do it again in a heart beat. I hope you enjoyed the pictures and I will update you after the first day as a GN at Doylestown Hospital!

My Advice for Future Nurses

As this year is coming to a close I thought it was only far that I share with you all of the things about the nursing program I have learned along the way.

First and foremost, get a job! If you get a job at a hospital or assisted living facility as a PCT or medtech then that will open so many doors for you when you are looking for a job as a RN. The tech job will provide you with a way to get your foot in the door and as help you as you go through many of your classes. You will gain exposure to a lot of different procedures and situations that you may not being able to experience in the clinical setting. The job will also put you a set ahead of many of your peers who have not done the leg work and you will be more valuable to a future employer because of your experience in the field.

Second, this goes along with getting a job, make positive relationships with your clinical instructors and/or the nurses you shadow. With building a good relationship they could serve as a reference on your resume and possibly help put in a good word for you with the floor supervisor. I know of a few situations where some students expressed to their clinical instructors how much they loved the floor they were on and that they would love to get a job there. It turns out that the instructor was able to give them a great recommendation and an interview, all because they had a great relationship and proved their competence.

Third, do not underestimate the power of the ARC. Here on Gwynedd's campus we have the Academic Resource Center which acts as a tutoring center for all students and majors on campus. It is a student to student approach and very much helps when studying for the, what seem impossible, nursing tests. Since the tutors have taken the tests before they help you focus on the main information. The ARC is also available after you have taken a test. They go over the questions you missed and provide an answer key to check the rest of your work. This is helpful to show not only what you got wrong but why, so you will hopefully not make the same mistake again.

Finally, do the case studies. Gwynedd's nursing program sets up mandatory case studies each semester. A lot f students put them off or don't take them seriously but they very much help when you have to take your HESI exit exam. It is also good practice for your NCLEX.

I hope this was helpful because these things that we push to the back of our minds really creep up on us. I have good news to share as well. I started my PCT job at Doylestown Hospital the summer of my Freshman year and worked all the way through until the end of my Sophomore year. Since I had that experience I was able to apply for their Graduate Nurse position and I got it! This puts me in a great position to start my career and still work towards getting my BSN.

If you have any more questions please do not hesitate to ask!

      Hello!

This weekend marked our last Habitat project for the year and it went so well! We worked on a home in Norristown and got the opportunity to learn how to put up dry wall, instal a bath tub, and use a power saw. If no one has told you, restoring a house is hard work and the rain didn't help very much either. It was a tough but we had a great team and the other Habitat volunteers were a huge help. Even though that was the last build date for Gwynedd, they have a very helpful website and there are plenty of things going on throughout the summer.

It is beginning to sink in that the year is almost over. We had our last Manna day a few weeks ago and now we wrapped up Habitat. It is crazy to think I will be graduating in May with my ASN and then it will be the challenge of finding a job. I have a few things in mind that I will update you on when I hear more. Wish me luck!

      Hello!

This is going to be a short entry but I just wanted to let everyone know that this Friday, March 25 is our BINGO NIGHT!

To help support our alternative break trips, Gwynedd-Mercy's Mercy Works program has started to host an annual bingo night on campus. We have about 12 rounds, an amazing variety of prize baskets to raffle, food, a kids corner, and more. This event very much helps to fund our ASB/AWB trips and allows us to participate in other service opportunities around the community.

We have received amazing feedback from previous participants so I can guarantee you will have a great time. We will be having the event at the Griffin Complex, doors opening at 6pm and the games begin at 7pm. I truly hope that anyone who is interested comes because it is a very fun event and many of the local residents really enjoy themselves as well.

So that's all for right now!
See you all at BINGO!

      Hi!

So as you may or may not know, last week was Gwynedd's spring break and let me tell you, it was such a great experience. For the second year in a row I was lucky enough to accompany a group to Southwest Baltimore and be a part of many service activities throughout the week. To be honest, I was a little nervous to go back because the Sister that lead the trip last year passed away, and I wasn't sure how it would all work out this time. Thankfully, we had an amazing group of faculty and students, it was evident that Sister Kitty was missed but we made the absolute best of the trip.

We started off the week by having a free day where we went to the Inner Harbor and visited the aquarium, which was so neat, and then finished with a group dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. After that, we went to the home where we were to stay the week and we were very fortunate to have the same house as last year, which was more than enough for all 13 of us.

Throughout the week we kept in close contact with the Sisters of Mercy that reside in Southwest Baltimore to help us do as many service opportunities as possible. We spent a great deal of the week helping out at St. Peter's Adult Learning Center for people who are over 21 with special needs. We helped them with arts and crafts and career planning. Then we spent some time at Paul's Place which served as a soup kitchen, AA/NA meeting center, after school program, and market for homeless men and women to get clean clothes and shoes free of charge. Later in the week, we were able to get in contact with the founder of YANA (You Are Never Alone). This organization works with men, women, and children involved in the sex trafficking ills of the city. It was very eye opening to hear directly from the young women who are still actively involved and it makes you aware of how ignorant some of us are to what is actually happening right outside our neighborhoods.

Finally, our last night we had the opportunity of cooking, serving, eating, and sitting in on a meeting with people in recovery at Hezekiah. I must say that this was my favorite part of the trip. While enjoying the meal we all spread out and had amazing conversations with the members of this recovery group. They were all so welcoming and open about their struggles and how they were, or were not yet, able to overcome their addictions. I was so grateful that they did not shut us out, they saw we were there to help and were truly sincere. I believe I can speak for the group when saying it was a very powerful meeting and discussion after, and they told us how proud they were that we are in college and to not take that for granted. They wanted us to succeed and just that alone speaks volumes of the heart and spirit they all have.

Overall, this trip was better than the first. I got to see how things in the city have started to develop and see some of the people move on with their recovery. With these trips it begins with you wanting to give back to a population in need, however, at the end you realize you get more than you give. It is a wonderful and moving experience I think everyone should have at least once in their life.

Here are the websites of the different organizations if you would like to give them a look. I highly recommend it!

      Hi Everyone!

So we had another very successful day at Manna on Main Street last week. In case you were wondering, Manna is the local soup kitchen in Lansdale and Gwynedd has developed a great relationship with them allowing us to get these highly coveted soup kitchen dates. We had a small group go and it worked out great. Since I am a Scholar in Service to Pennsylvania (SISPA) member it is up to me to get the kids on campus interested in the many volunteer opportunities we have on campus, and Manna is just the tip of the ice berg.

While at Manna we get to have one-on-one interaction with the people we serve. The clients come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, ages, and socioeconomic statuses. It is really great to get to know them on a personal level and you find you can connect with them easily on many levels. We help serve food and get drinks, then help with clean up when we are all finished. At the end you feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction because you really do help the clients. Just by having a conversation with them you can tell means a lot.

I only have a few more dates scheduled for the rest of the semester and they are all filled! But I am also working on a Habitat for Humanity 5k/fun run fundraiser to be held in April so that will keep me busy. A group of us students from Gwynedd-Mercy, Philadelphia University and Villanova have been working closely to put this together and I am confident it will work out very smoothly. When I hear more I will be sure to update.

Check back in soon!

Nursing, as usual, has started in full swing and the beginning of my maternity rotation at Holy Redeemer has started. Even though this is not exactly the field I want to go into I love how Gwynedd exposes you to all different areas of nursing. So far, I was able to spend the day in the nursey and NICU and I had the best time! The babies were all so adorable and everyone had a little something that was so unique about them. I am not lying when I say I couldn't take the smile off my face the entire time I was in there. We were able to give them their first baths, give them their shots and eye drops, and deliver them to the proud parents for their first feedings. It was definitely a very special time.

Next week is my last day where I will be in Labor and Delivery. I can't wait! Also, next rotation will be at CHOP for my peds rotation. As you can see we bounce around a lot when we go to our different clinical sites which is also a great thing. I like being able to see a variety of patients from all different backgrounds and situations because it makes for a great and knowledgable learning experience.

That's all for now and I'll be sure to check back in soon!

Even with all of the snow the second semester is already off to such a great start! It wasn't too long ago since a group of eight students, including myself, returned from our Alternative Winter Break trip (AWB) to Philadelphia. AWB is just one of the many opportunities Gwynedd-Mercy offers its students to get in touch with our surrounding community and see how we can help to make a difference.

While you are on an Alternative Break trip you really learn a lot about yourself. It provides you with the chance to make new friends with people you might not have connected with otherwise. You realize you are there with people who want to better their community as well as themselves, and you find out you have a lot in common.

We started off by leaving campus and making ourselves at home at Cranaleith Spiritual Center, sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy http://www.cranaleith.org. While there, the Sisters made it as though we were visiting our Grandmothers for the week. This is due to all of the delicious food and warm smilies they provided us day in and day out. In between being in the comforts of Cranaleith we did an astounding amount of service that greatly benefited the people of Philadelphia.

During our first day we went to Project H.O.M.E, www.projecthome.org, which is an organization that helps Philadelphia's homeless population. Our Second day we visited Manna, www.mannapa.org, which is an organization that provides free meals to residents dealing with life-threatening illnesses such as AIDS, Cancer and Diabetes, to name a few. While there we made well over 2,500 meals! On our third day we helped out at Impact Thrift, impactthrift.org, with sorting and organizing. Then our last day of service we worked with Aid for Friends, www.aidforfriends.org, which is like Manna but they provide meals for elderly shut-ins that cannot leave their homes and get adequate nutrition on their own. The great thing is that all of these organizations would take any help they can get from volunteers in a heart beat, so don't hesitate to contact them!

AWB also opens the floor for discussions and reflection about what we saw and enjoyed about our experiences that day. Some more good news is that Gwynedd also offers Alternative Spring Break trips and this year we will be going to the Bronx, NY, Baltimore, MD, and Cincinnati, OH. Just last year we were able to travel to Texas and New Orleans, so you never know what to expect.

There will be more to come about all of the great things Gwynedd-Mercy offers along with my advice and experiences on how I made the smooth transition from transfer student to a Griffin!
