Treadmills are better for most of you out there. Read on so I can explain why.

When deciding on a piece for exercise equipment there are some fundamental questions which need to be answered before you toddle off to the sports shop.

.
1.	Why are you doing this? Have you got old items of exercise equipment lying at home? The reason that many people fail in their exercise programs is from lack of motivation, not due to inefficient equipment. Cheap nasty equipment will DESTROY your motivation because its uncomfortable to use

.
2.	What can you afford? Rather buy a very good bike than a rickety treadmill. Don’t buy an elliptical for less than R6500 and don’t even think about a treadmill under R9 000… not ever! Cheap bargain equipment will feel different to the sturdy well built stuff you may have used at a gym. Spend a little extra and get a quality piece of equipment. It is a great investment.

.
3.	What do you want to achieve? Do you want to lose weight get fit, tone up or put on muscle? Is cardio equipment the right equipment for you?

.
4.	Do you have injuries? Or a susceptibility towards injury’s such as overuse injuries?

.
5.	Have you read my articles on why not to buy second hand cardio equipment? If not, then just remember, don’t EVER buy second hand treadmills and elliptical.

.
6.	Who have you been talking to? If you have not been talking to a professional with a great reputation in the industry and years of experience in training people, setting up and managing fitness facilities then it’s time to talk to me. I will help you answer all of the above questions and then provide you with the most affordable solution for you. Contact me on 071 863 73 98 or email miles@gym4me.com.

.
7.	Where are you going to buy from? Many clients I deal with making their first internet purchase feel hesitant as they think that it is risky to buy from an online retailer. Some online retailers are better than others, however this is a common way of buying fitness equipment.(contact me for names of reputable online retailers serving you region). And for those people who want try the machine first; ALL exercise may feel a little uncomfortable and strange the first time. There is little to gain from trying the machine on a shop floor for five minutes

The units sold through the various reputable companies are designed very carefully and professional teams are employed to make sure than no fundamental mistakes are made that would increase the chances of injury. Get the right advice form experts like me and the machine I suggest will be perfect for YOUR needs.

And if you are looking for a really good reason to buy online then remember; reputable Web based retailers have a far bigger range and fewer associated costs than the supermarket down the road. Call me for a list or reputable web based retailers.

.

If you need assistance in answering these questions or don’t know where to start then call me on 071 863 7398 or email miles@gym4me.com
If you want to lose weight and tone up then you want to burn maximum calories in the shortest time period.

Remember you will always put more effort into an exercise you enjoy. Most people enjoy walking as opposed to the elliptical movement.
Research has consistently shown that all things being equal, a treadmill workout and an elliptical workout burn similar numbers of calories. (Thomas Altena, University of Missouri-Columbia ) So what’s the difference?

A treadmill is like a conveyor belt and with some small differences mimics a walking or running action, and yes it can, under most circumstances assist with burning “fat” (providing you don’t eat ten cream buns straight after your workout.)
An elliptical machine is named after the elliptical movement of the feet as opposed to a stepper which is up and down and a treadmill which is forward in a type of arc but after landing on the belt creates a straight line back until the rear foot is lifted once again and brought forward.

When you should look at an Elliptical instead of a Treadmill

1.	Cost. Elliptical are cheaper than treadmills. An entry level quality treadmill for home use will cost you around R9500. An elliptical of equal quality will cost R6900.

.
2.	Knee injuries, running related injuries, shin splints, are indications that you should try a different movement such as an elliptical.

.
3.	You have a Treadmill in your home gym already and want to add another angle to the workout.

.
4.	You want to exercise upper body and lower body. Most Ellipticals have handles which exercise the arms, back and chest. Keep in mind that most people do NOT use the handles on a regular basis.

.
5.	If you get bored quickly then the elliptical offers more variety to your workout. You can pedal forwards, backwards and use the arms. It is possible to target different muscle groups with the different actions.

.
6.	You don’t like walking or running. Most people however do find walking easy. When you begin an exercise routine make everything as easy as possible during you workouts. Tricky uncomfortable machines may make you head for the couch instead of the workout room. Spinning is another option.

.
7.	Very heavy, obese or overweight people may find less strain on their joints, feet and back. However the elliptical movement itself can still be very difficult for an overweight person. Most treadmills do however have very effective cushioning and flexible decks. Running on a treadmill is nothing like running on the road.

.
8.	A last point before you head out of the cheapest gym equipment; I do like the comments here (http://exercise.about.com/cs/exercisegear/bb/bybelliptical.htm) in regards to spending as much you can. I wouldn’t have put it so bluntly but as he has then I no longer need to! He is of course right though. Another valid post here (http://www.ellipticalhome.com/elliptical-trainer-buyers-guide.html). Do it properly Buy Good Equipment

.

So, all things being equal, and especially as a new comer to the home exercise team, Buy a treadmill first.
In conclusion I would like to remind you of an important fact of life. Maintaining an exercise program is sometimes difficult and I advise that you remove all of the potential obstacles. Invest correctly in your home gym, make it look nice, smell nice, sound nice and buy equipment which motivates you and makes you want to come back for another workout.

If you are ready to make the next move call me for more details on reputable online vendors or for advice as to the best way to get you body and your fitness back to where it should be

Part Two of this article will deal with How to choose a treadmill or elliptical, what questions to ask when you have decided that one is better than the other.

So what does make a treadmill workout so effective? Do you feel the need to buy a treadmill? Have a look at what I say here then contact me by phone or email:fitness@gym4me.com Well, as you all know I am some what of a holistic and pragmatic thinker. (What on earth does that mean?) Bear with me, the writing style calms down a bit after the early morning coffee wears off!

So what does make a treadmill workout so effective?

Do you feel the need to buy a treadmill? Have a look at what I say here then contact me by phone or email:fitness@gym4me.com

Well, as you all know I am some what of a holistic and pragmatic thinker. (What on earth does that mean?) Bear with me, the writing style calms down a bit after the early morning coffee wears off!

That means that I realised many years ago that “paper theory” and practise in the gym are very separate matters. That’s why so many of you (the client) and us, (exercise professionals) just didn’t get the results we were after.
I also realise that if the average de-conditioned member does not enjoy the exercise that they are doing then they will not continue training. It’s as simple as that. All of the best intentions in the world and all of the goal setting mean nothing if you don’t start having fun in the gym or your home gym.
The primary reason why a treadmill workout is effective is that the movement is natural and easy to perform. Sometimes this makes it potentially dangerous as we recall (some 20 years ago) how we used to run for that rugby ball! If you have been out o condition for a few years then remember, “superman does not live here anymore”.

As exercise professionals we are always looking for ways to make exercise more comfortable and inviting for our clients. A treadmill is a really easy way to get back into a light exercise routine as you as a client do not have to think too much about the movement.
So how do we make the treadmill workout more effective?

1.	Choose the right machine. (here he goes again!). Yes you are right! I am going to make this point again.

Buy a cheap nasty unit and you won’t use it. If you have been out of training for a while then make this as enjoyable and inviting as possible. Spoil yourself. Buy the expensive treadmill, why not? We always support the expensive car purchase by telling our selves that it is good quality, will have a better resale value and that it will motivate us to drive a nice car. Well the same thing applies to exercise equipment.

Get something nice and not only will you want to get out of bed and use it, but you will want to show your friends, they might come around and use it and before long you have a group of people training at the house and you put money into a kitty and buy more equipment and hey presto, you have small community gym rocking and rolling at your house. (See my blog on gyms and mixed businesses.) Motivation is King and good friends motivate.

2.	Choose the right shoes, as well as the right type of clothing. Yes, buy a running shoe, and put those Crocs away for goodness sake. What were you thinking?

3.	Consider your fitness levels. Have you been away from exercise for more than a few months? See point 10. Remember that exercise creates changes in your body and metabolism that are good for you.

Overtraining, however will run your body down and take down your immunity levels. What is a light workout for a Marathon runner may be deadly for you. Take it easy.

4.	Consider your weight. Walking and running are very natural movements, however your weight may have increased since you were at school. Very heavy people should consider some alternatives before running on a treadmill.

5.	Consider any injuries. Do you have some niggles? Old injuries? Don’t make them worse. Go and see your GP and ask to be referred to a biokineticist or physiotherapist for a monitored program. If you have a pre existing injury then I would always suggest specialised medical help first for a diagnosis, then a personal trainer afterwards.

6.	Keeping an eye on the heart rate. I will deal with different types of workout later this week, however if you are serious about your health and fitness levels then you should have a mobile heart rate monitor and chest strap.

Do not rely on contact heart rate monitors on the treadmills. I train on a treadmill that costs over R100 000 and the contact heart rate does not work correctly. It’s the technology, not the quality of the treadmill. Anyway your mobile heart rate and strap can be used for swimming and walks.

7.	Design your own programs. It’s easy. Remember that simple features on a treadmill often means that you can get a unit with great fundamentals and cheaper electronics.

Although it may be convenient to have a fat burn and sprint program on the treadmill, nothing beats being able to design your own program simply using the speed and elevation settings.

Watch this space for more on designing your own program. Or contact me for telephone or email consultation ion 071 863 7398 or miles@gym4me.com

8.	Correct planning of your exercise schedule. Get into the habit of training at the same time every day. Some research has shown that you burn more fat when you train in the morning, however it’s more important to train when you have energy and when you will enjoy the workout. A large portion of exercise results are dependent on motivation. If you need help with understanding motivation see some sites on NLP.

9.	If you feel dizzy, uncomfortable, short of breath, or in any way “unwell”. Stop the unit and consult your Dr. If you train on your own, let people know where you are and what time you expect to finish. And to all you youngster having a laugh out there, it can happen to the fittest of people that they slip and fall and are not found because they went to work out in their basement gym.

10.	No injuries? No niggles? No health problems? Have a check-up anyway. You would be surprised at how much your GP can pick up from a check up. Gym4me.com is all about wellness and enjoying a long and fruitful life. Let your GP tell you that you see him too much rather than being told that he could have helped has you come sooner.
So in South Africa what makes should you be looking at that have the golden three features? (Price, Product and Back up)

There are a few brands in South Africa that meet the criteria. Contact me and I shall forward you prices lists and recommendations for your needs. Alternatively if you would like to contact the suppliers directly then contact me and I shall forward their details to you.
I will be posting some specific workouts and examples later this week, so watch this space.

For many people LACK OF EXERCIZE it is nothing but a guilt trip, perpetuated by their inability to take action, even on the smallest of scales. That does not have to be you.
Starting an exercise program is easy, why not start your new life today rather than in a year’s time?
There are various reasons why somebody would want to train at home, and you may be scouring the web looking for you first gym equipment purchase. If I have read your mind well enough then I would say that you are looking for a treadmill?

If you are relying on all of your results from your home gym then please look at the following considerations when choosing that item of home equipment

1.	How much should I spend? Don’t buy on price alone. Would you have brain surgery with the cheapest surgeon? Well your fitness and health should be no different; every day gone by can never be reclaimed. (And tatty treadmills, like tatty brains have a very poor resale value.)
No matter how rich you are, time cannot be bought and bad advice followed is the same as having time stolen from you. Think about that.

Make sure that your vendor is willing to give some solid advice and has been in the fitness game for some time. If you have made the decision to start exercise then you owe it to yourself to get it right the first time.
If you buy cheap nasty equipment it will feel cheap and nasty, and you will feel cheap and nasty after you use it. You will feel used and dirty and cheated! Terrible!!!
As I have mentioned many times before, you get what you pay for. Deal with a reputable company, (contact me for a list of reputable vendors in South Africa, fitness@gym4me.com) and discuss your budget. Like the brain operation, this should be a very important purchase in your life; spend some time discussing it with a professional.

2.	What is your goal?
a.	To lose weight,
b.	gain muscle,
c.	get fit,
d.	recover from an injury,
e.	improve aspects of health or wellness?

In most cases I find that when I discuss goals with clients there are a number of different goals such as muscle gaining, toning and weight loss. One treadmill (especially a cheap and nasty one) may not be the most efficient way of achieving this. To see all the benefits of exercise please see the gym4me.com site.

Write the goal down, visualise what you will be and can do when you have achieved this goal. Now make the commitment and let’s get you started.

3.	Do I need other equipment? Actually I shall commit the sin of “mind reading” and answer this one. Yes, you probably do want to have some sort of strength training as well as a treadmill. Contrary to what most people think, running and cardio training alone is NOT an effective way to lose weight. A combination of strength training and cardio is the best way.
This, of course links in with point number one. Discuss your needs with a reputable vendor or a fitness professional before buying the wrong equipment. I consult to many players in the industry as well as assist my clients to achieve holistic wellness goals. You are welcome to contact me for advice. Fitness@gym4me.com

4.	Why did I give up my last exercise program? Did I get bored? Did I injure myself? Did I see no results?
Write the reasons and potential reasons down and let’s avoid them from happening again. Trust me on this issue; you are not the first person and not the last. The whole fitness industry revolves around you getting results. There are ways of getting over all of the obstacles.

Write them down and lets discuss them. Contact me for assistance or ask me for a list of reputable Gym Equipment Vendors in South Africa. Contact fitness@gym4me.com.

That’s all for this post. It’s more than enough information to help you make an educated decision with regards to your first purchase.
Do you feel the need to buy a treadmill? Have a look at what I say here then contact me by phone or email:fitness@gym4me.com

You get what you pay for. Although there are some really good value treadmills out there please be wary of the “best treadmill around for the cheapest price”

I recently spoke to a gym owner who had been promised a lifetime warrantee on all moving parts by an unscrupulous equipment vendor.

The chances of the frame lasting more than 7 years are very remote, especially in a gym environment. When it was time to send the motor in for repairs the treadmill stood for 6 weeks and the gym owner had to pay for the technician to take out the unit and send it to a city far away from his gym
Check the small print!

At gym4me.com we have linked up with the most reputable and reliable brands in the country and can offer you the best VALUE deals.

Contact gym4me.com or on 071 863 7398

Ten things to consider when buying a treadmill

1.	Forget the second hand good deal route. Do not buy a second hand treadmill… ever.

2.	Look online at a reputable vendor. There are a few exceptional online vendors that I have used in South Africa and I will send you their details if you want them. Contact me

3.	Be wary of Saturday morning specials at the local hyper market. Many home units at shops are impulse purchases and are geared around that fact. I.e. they look flashy on the outside and are designed to go at the cheapest rate possible.

4.	Ask for advice from an independent fitness expert before deciding on only one item of equipment. Gym4me.com also offers free advice. A treadmill may not be the piece of equipment that you are really needing.

5.	Ask the vendor for advice. The reputable companies have owners who are experienced in the fitness game and can give solid advice. If you are not happy with the advice or want more advice call me.

6.	Ask how long the brand has been in the country. Is it an ongoing supply? Or was it part of a once off container that a part time supplier is palming off.

7.	Deal with a company that does this full time, somebody with a business to build up and who cares about your customer satisfaction. There are some really good gym equipment suppliers in South Africa. Contact me and I will send you their details.

8.	Have you budgeted properly? R12 000 is about the cut off point for a good quality home treadmill. R5000 and I am sorry, what sort of car will you get for R5000? Need I say more?

9.	Remember that exercise is a lifestyle choice. This is not a monthly purchase it is a product which if maintained will look after your fitness for five years or more. R12 000 over 5 years is R2400 per year, that is R200 per month, cheaper than a gym membership. Don’t be “pennywise and pound foolish”.

10.	Don’t buy second hand treadmills. Didn’t you read this the first time I wrote it? Of course its a good deal! Now look for spares. “Ooopsey, we don’t make that model anymore there are no spares”. The country’s gyms are littered with units which were brought in to the country on a once off basis. No back up, no spares, no service. Buyer beware of “five star deals”

11.	I know I said ten things but this is important. DONT get fooled by big motor statistics. HP, (Horse Power) must be “Continuous Duty” not the often quoted “Peak Horse Power”. Compare apples with apples
So the next time your gym owner tells you that it’s an expensive business maintaining the equipment on low monthly gym fees, please believe him.

Happy hunting and call me for advice or for a list of REPUTABLE South African Vendors
