(Caracas, Venezuela) In a battle of undefeated teams, the Canadian (4-0) and Japanese (4-0) Women’s National Teams played to a hard fought game. After scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth, Japan held on for the 2-1 win in a very solid defensive game. The loss was Canada’s first of the tournament, and they are now tied for second place in Pool A with the Netherlands with a 4-1 record. Canada will play South Africa (1-4) at 5:30pm EDT on Monday, before closing the preliminary round against the Netherlands on Tuesday.
In a well-played game where both teams received quality pitching and made several outstanding defensive plays. Canada had their chances, but could not get a bounce and ended up dropping the hard fought game.
The first three innings went scoreless as Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) had the only hit for Canada and Canadian starting pitcher Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) had only given up a double in the third. Defensively, Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, New York) made a great catch at the wall in centerfield as she had to go back to get the ball a foot from the fence to end the first inning.
In the top of the fourth, Canada loaded the bases with one out. Jenn Yee (North Delta, BC) led off the inning with a single to center and was called out at second on a Lawrick sacrifice attempt. Lawrie was hit by a pitch and replaced by pinch runner Evelyne Pare (Ile-Perrot, QC). Jen Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) then singled to right, but the hit was too shallow to push Lawrick in to score. With one out, Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph, ON) struck out, and Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) struck out on a 3-2 pitch after fouling off five pitches.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Japan was able to score the first run of the game. Japan got a leadoff single, a one out walk and with two out, a ground ball hit to Canada’s short stop Jen Salling took a bad hop and just missed hitting Salling in the face, bouncing into left field to score the first run. Lawrie then induced a fly out to left to end the inning.
Canada answered right back in the top of the fifth. With one out, Melanie Mathews (Surrey, BC) singled with a line drive to left field. Matthews moved to second on a slap out by Caitlin Lever. Jenn Yee stepped up and hit a ground ball past the first baseman into right field and Matthews beat a great throw from right field to tie the game at one.
In the bottom of the fifth, Lawrie was able to get the two first outs, but gave up a double and an infield single that Salling was able to keep from getting into the outfield and had no play. With two strikes, Lawrie jammed the Japanese hitter, who managed to get enough of the ball to bloop it over Salling’s head into left field. The first Japanese runner scored but centre fielder Caitlin Lever threw out the second runner with a perfect throw to the plate.
Jenna Caira (Toronto, ON) replaced Lawrie and sat Japan down in order in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh, Matthews hit a ground ball single to right field with two out. Lever ended the game with a comebacker to the Japanese pitcher.
Lawrie and Caira combined to give up six hits with one strikeout and one walk. Yee and Mathews each had two hits, while Salling and Lawrick added singles.
In other action on Sunday, Chinese Taipei doubled Argentina 6-3, the United States beat Australia 9-2, China blanked the Dominican Republic 7-0, the Netherlands shut out South Africa 7-0, the Czech Republic edged Botswana 5-4, Venezuela defeated New Zealand 5-2, and Cuba beat Great Britain 4-1.

Pegg landed two solid vaults in the women’s artistic gymnastics final for her victory.

“I try not to think about medals when I’m competing but it’s always in the back of your mind,” said Pegg, who also placed seventh in the beam final. “Winning gold here against the top Chinese and Americans is a pretty big accomplishment for me.”

Bronze medals were claimed by Kristina Vaculik of Whitby, Ont., in the women’s gymnastics senior floor exercise, Madeleine Gardiner of Cambridge, Ont., in the junior beam competition and Maria Kitkarska of Montreal in the junior rhythmic gymnastics ball event.

Most Ambitious Media Initiative in Canadian History Announced

– Consortium reinvents how Games coverage will be delivered —
– Canadians to experience Olympic Games like never before —
– Record 4,800 hours of live Vancouver 2010 coverage —

TORONTO (January 12, 2010) – It’s a completely new way to experience the Olympic Games. With one month to go until the Opening Ceremony, Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium announced today the most ambitious media initiative in Canadian history.

The Consortium will deliver unprecedented choice and access in a broadcast plan that is unlike anything seen before anywhere in the world. The strategy is designed to allow Canadians to experience the Games on their own terms – to watch what they want, when they want and how they want. Viewers can access three levels of experience: Best of the Best (on CTV and V), Extended (on TSN, Rogers Sportsnet, RDS and others), and Complete (on CTVOlympics.ca and RDSOlympiques.ca). The Olympic Games experience will also be delivered by the Consortium via online, radio, print, mobile, VOD, theatre, and in person at local events.

“Throw away any pre-conceived notions you may have about an Olympic Games broadcast,” said Ivan Fecan, President and Chief Executive Officer, CTVglobemedia and Chief Executive Officer, CTV Inc. “We are giving consumers complete control of their Olympic Games experience, tailored for our digital age.”

“We have seen an evolution in the way Canadians consume media, and as content providers, we have an obligation to deliver on those desires and expectations. And that is precisely what we aim to accomplish,” said Keith Pelley, President, Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium.

Viewers can choose the intensity of their Olympic Games experience:

Best of the Best – All the ‘big’ moments will be featured live on CTV and V (with French-language coverage produced by RDS). Viewers won’t miss any of these key moments from Vancouver 2010, as the two channels will provide live coverage of the top stories and most significant events at any given time, including every single Canadian medal victory. In addition to live event coverage, CTV and V will present highlights from events happening concurrently on other channels, directing viewers to additional networks for extended coverage of certain events.

Extended – Companion networks, including TSN, RDS and Rogers Sportsnet, will present live coverage of key events from start to finish. Full hockey games, curling matches, alpine skiing races, figure skating programs, speed skating, sliding events and more will air in their entirety on these channels.

Complete – Every second of every competition will be provided live on the Consortium’s two websites CTVOlympics.ca and RDSolympiques.ca. With up to 14 concurrent live streams available, the websites will host live feeds from five networks (CTV, TSN, Rogers Sportsnet, V and RDS) as well as the live host broadcast stream of every sport and discipline from beginning to end of competition. For coverage viewers don’t often get to see – such as the 65th-ranked alpine skier from the Cayman Islands – CTVOlympics.ca and RDSolympiques.ca offer access like never before. Viewers won’t miss a second of the action.

The Olympic Games transcend sports, and as such, the Consortium will roll out the red carpet for all the glamour and glitz as the ETALK and FASHIONTELEVISION teams cover the celebrity sightings, style, fashion and pop culture of the Games. MuchMusic also heads out west for a daily double dose of the music, sights and sounds of the Games with MOD Live @ The Base, as well as exclusive coverage of the star-studded nightly concerts from the Vancouver and Whistler Victory Ceremonies. CTV and Rogers’ industry-leading news organizations will also be front and centre with frequent daily reports on the politics, protests and topical issues of the Games.

In an Olympic Games first, the Consortium will deliver every second of every competition LIVE from Vancouver 2010, encompassing more than 4,800 hours of coverage in 22 languages on 12 television channels, 20 radio stations and two dedicated websites. In all, the Consortium will present more than 2,250 hours of coverage on television, 2,350 hours online and 200 hours on radio. The Consortium’s coverage of Vancouver 2010 on television alone is more than double the amount of Canadian television coverage made available in English and French for Turin 2006 (1,009 hours). Coverage of Vancouver 2010 will be produced entirely in High Definition and will be presented from February 12 to 28 across the following platforms:

• Television (English) – CTV, TSN, Rogers Sportsnet, OLN, APTN, MuchMusic

To help viewers navigate their Olympic Games experience, CTVOlympics.ca and RDSolympiques.ca offer an all-encompassing interactive digital Viewers’ Guide, presented by Bell. Launching February 1 at CTVOlympics.ca, RDSolympiques.ca and as a mobile application, the Viewers’ Guide is fully customizable offering Canadians complete control over their Vancouver 2010 experience. The Viewers’ Guide also enables and instructs fans to set reminders and alerts as well as program their Bell TV PVR by specific sport or event, ensuring they don’t miss any of the action or results.

• CTVOlympics.ca and RDSolympiques.ca will provide a record 2,350 hours of live Vancouver 2010 coverage, representing the most comprehensive Olympic Winter Games web offering ever.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Special treatment for Leaf goalie

Sep 20, 2009 04:30 AM

I had to write to show my dismay and disappointment in our “great” medical system.

This has to do with the recent ablation procedure new Leaf’s goalie Jonas Gustavsson underwent on his heart. I appreciate he is key to the team, but my husband has been waiting for more than two years.

He was referred by his cardiologist for the procedure and finally heard from the hospital in January. He went in for consultation in the summer and was put on a waiting list for at least another year.

He has had an atrial fibrillation condition for more than 25 years. All of a sudden someone in the limelight has it for a few hours and leapfrogs over my husband and everyone else on the waiting list.

This type of preferential treatment is wrong. I am very upset that this occurred and want to understand why.

10 interesting facts you probably didn’t know about gymnastics!

# 1 The number of the National Federations which are members of the international Governing body (FIG) has grown to 130 in the year 2008.

# 2 1960 saw a number of Gymnastics curiosities in Great Britain: like 200 boys applying for 90 places in the first National School Boys Course held at Swaylands College near Tonbridge, or the Royal Albert Hall’s 6,000 seating capacity being insufficient to meet the demand of the crowd during the British Championships held on 25th March 1961.

# 3 British Gymnastics is one of the oldest Governing bodies in the world. It has been formed on 21st June 1888, then under the name Amateur Gymnastics Association.

# 4 The triple somersault on floor was seen for the first time at Olympic Games in Seoul 1988; it was performed by Valery Liukin (USSR) whose daughter Anastasia (Nastia) Liukin became Olympic All-around Champion for women exactly 20 years later, in Beijing 2008, competing for the USA.

# 5 The first International Code of Points for men has been created in 1949 and consisted of 12 pages, while its last edition, from 2007, consists of 150 pages.

# 6 Svetlana Khorkina (RUS) is the only woman in the history of gymnastics who has won the World Individual All-around title three times – 1997, 2001, 2003.

# 7 Under the overall description of Gymnastics lie the individual disciplines and activities of: Men’s Artistic Gymnastics, Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Trampoline Gymnastics (all of the above being Olympic disciplines), and also Tumbling, Acrobatics, Aerobics, General Gymnastics and Gymnastics & Movement for People with Disabilities (GMPD).

# 8 The word gymnastics is derived from the Greek ‘gymnos’ (naked), as most athletes during the ancient Olympic games performed without clothes. The ‘gymnasium’ in Greek was a public school or place designated for physical exercises.

# 9 There are four male gymnasts who have won the Individual World All-around title twice: Yuri Korolev (USSR), 1981 & 1985; Dmitry Bilozertchev, (USSR), 1983 & 1987; Ivan Ivankov, Belarus, 1994 & 1997 and the Chinese Yang Wei, 2006 & 2007.

# 10 Artistic Gymnastics is one of the few sports that have been contested at every Olympic games of the modern era since 1896 when only 18 male gymnasts took part representing 5 nations.

41st Artistic Gymnastics World Championships
London (GBR), October 13 – 18, 2009

LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, July 31, 2009:

The 2009 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships will truly be a worldwide event as the Definitive Registration list shows 75 delegations and a total of 457 gymnasts (283 MAG and 174 WAG) will be present at London’s O2 Arena for the biggest gymnastics show, on October, 13-18.

The overall number of all participants, coaches, judges, officials and guests to be accredited at this event comes, so far to 1,166 people.
Considering that the last World Championships of the competition format that will apply in 2009 (Competitions 1, 2 and 3, but no Team event), in Melbourne in 2005, saw 189 male and 95 female gymnasts representing 67 National Federations, it is apparent that the London World Championships will be one of the biggest ever.
According to initial estimations, 961 men’s routines and 551 women’s routines will be competed in the Qualification round of the Championships on October 13 – 14 for men and women respectively – a tough job for the judges!
The heavyweight countries are of course all represented, with China, the USA, Romania, Russia, Japan and Great Britain amongst the delegations sending a full complement of 6 MAG and 4 WAG gymnasts.

The other countries sending the maximum number of participants are Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia and Switzerland.
