If we asked the average English-speaking web user what China cities they could name, we would probably get a list something like the one below. China is still a little-known and rather exotic country for most of the world, despite modern transport and communications turning the world into a global village. Everyone knows China has the world’s largest population and is an economic giant. But did you know China has well over 100 cities of over a million people? India and the USA don’t even come close with just over 50 urban areas (not individual cities) of over a million people each. See China's Top Large Cities.

China's Large Cities — A World Comparison

China has 5 megacities (urban areas of 10 million inhabitants). This compared to 3 in India, 2 in the USA, Japan, and Brazil, and 1 in 14 other countries.

China has 14 cities of over 5 million people (Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Taipei, Chengdu, Hong Kong, Nanjing, Wuhan, Shenyang, Hangzhou, and Chongqing), whereas the USA has 8, India 7, Japan and Brazil 3, and 31 other countries have 1. So China has 21% of the world's 5-million-person cities.

China has 41 cities of over 2 million people, 20% of the world total, compared with the USA's 21, India's 15, Brazil's 12, and Japan's 6.

China has 79 (16.5%) of the world's 478 largest built up areas (i.e. city and connected suburbs), compared to 55 for India, 53 for the US and 50 for the EU. China has over 100 built up areas of over 1 million people!

China has half of the world's top 6 city clusters (a.k.a. megalopolises or megaregions):
The Pearl River Delta (Population: 120 million, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Hong Kong, Foshan, Zhuhai, and Macau)
The Yangtze River Delta (88 million, including Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Suzhou)
The Bohai Rim (66 million, including Beijing, Tianjin, Shenyang, Dalian, Dandong, Yantai, Jinan, Qinhuangdao, Qingdao, and Weihai)
The other three are The Indo-Gangetic Plain (200 million), The European Backbone (90 million), and The Tokyo Region (80 million).

From the architect. We like the virtue of architecture which makes possible constructing a house on air, walking on water... An abrupt plot of land overlooking the sea, where what is best is to do nothing. It invites to stay. A piece that respects the land's natural contour is set in it. Above, a shadow, the house itself, looking calmly at the Mediterranean. Under the sun, the swimming-pool brings us closer to the sea, it becomes a quiet cove. In the inflection point, the stairway proposes a evocative path, a garden in the basement...

Zhangye Danxia Landform, China

With its rolling hills, rocky peaks and multitude of colours, this otherworldly site looks like no place on Earth. The spectacular lunar landscape can be found at the Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park in Gansu Province, China. Like one giant red, orange and yellow-hued paint spattered artwork, the park offers breathtaking views that blaze with colour. The unusual colouration in the rocks is the result of red sandstone and mineral deposits being laid down over 24 million years

Fly Geyser, Nevada

Fly Geyser is a man-made geothermal geyser reaching around five feet high in Washoe County, Nevada. It sits on a seven-foot mound and was created accidentally when drilling took place at the point in an attempt to find sources of geothermal energy in 1964. Although people are not entirely sure why it occurred, it was most likely due to the well being left unplugged, leading to the accumulation of dissolved minerals which rose to the surface and created the mound on which the geyser sits. Plumes of hot water continuously spew up to five feet in the air, which fills the numerous surrounding terraces of pools with water. It is the brilliant green and red colouring caused by thermophilic algae which makes the geyser so remarkable.

Keukenhof Gardens, Holland
Historic park Keukenhof is the world's largest flower garden, with more than seven million flower bulbs planted every year. In spring, you can see the spectacular collection of tulips take over the park with their bright colours of pink, orange, purple, yellow and orange. The unique park in Holland also has carpets of hyacinths, daffodils, orchids, roses, carnations, irises and lilies, making it appear as something out of The Wizard of Oz when they are in full bloom.

Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Japan
The Arashiyama Bamboo Forest in Kyoto is a 500-metre pathway through the Sagano Bamboo Forest. It is one of Japan's most picturesque natural environments and is known for the sound that is made when the wind blows through the thick bamboo grove. The music was even voted one of Japan's must-preserve sounds.

Whitehaven Beach, Australia
The Whitsundays' Whitehaven Beach is a pristine beach stretching seven kilometres, gently lapped by rippling waves of turquoise and aquamarine. The sand at the Australian beach is so pure and white that it is 89 per cent silica, and is believed to have been brought to the beach from sea currents over millions of years.

Lake Hillier, Australia
Western Australia's Lake Hillier is a bubble gum pink-coloured lake that is surrounded by a rim of sand and dense woodland. It is a complete mystery to scientists, who have never been able to identify why the is pink. Some say the colour comes from a dye created by bacteria living in the salt crusts. The lake is best viewed from the sky, but there is also the Pink Lake lookout, which offers stunning views of the 600-metre-long lake.

Crystal Cave of Skaftafell, Iceland
The breathtaking Crystal Cave of Svmnafellsjvkull in Iceland's Skaftafell National Park is a glistening wonder with its brilliant indigo and aquamarine hues, and unique snap, crackle and pop sounds. Created by the Vatnajvkull ice cap in the south of Iceland, the cave is accessible through a 22ft entrance on the shoreline and is a tight squeeze towards the end where it is no more than four feet high.

Cappadocia, Turkey
The surreal landscape of Cappadocia is characterised by subterranean cities, cave houses, fairy chimneys and winding valleys, and is one of the most enchanting places on the planet. The otherworldly landscape is best enjoyed from the sky on a hot air balloon ride, where you can see the extraordinary rock formations, vineyards and villages of the historical region in Turkey.

Lake Gairdner, Australia
This salt lake in South Australia is surrounded by brilliant red sand hills and the shimmering surface is a photographer's dream. When standing in the centre of the surreal Lake Gairdner, the horizon seems to disappear. The site hosts the annual Dry Lake Racers event in March.

From the architect. The castle of the Portuguese city of Pombal testifies to the power of time as the main contributor for the transformation of the built environment. The top of a hill overlooking the valley of the Arunca river has been occupied since the time of the Roman empire, and since then performed multiple roles and configured very many spatial and social practices. From a small provincial community, it evolved to a vital defensive structure in a territorial network of military apparatus, and eventually became a touristic destination and an identifying device for the region. After designing the reorganization of Pombal castle's hill, comoco arquitectos were commissioned the design of a visitor centre for the castle’s ward, including the landscaping of the area and the revitalization of the amenities already installed in the Torre de Menagem (the castle’s keep).

Shayton Equilibrium

The newest super sports car called Shayton Equilibrium comes from Slovenia. The name Shayton means "falcon" in Sioux Indian, one of the most feared birds of prey that is also the company’s logo. The aggressive lines of the Equilibrium are the work of local designer Andrej Stanta. Shayton Equilibrium will be powered by a V12 engine capable of 1,084 horsepower and 930 Nm of torque (686 lb-ft) at 5,000 rpm. With only 1.200kg, thanks to the use of titanium and carbon in the construction of the chassis, the supercar can go from 0-60mph sprint time of 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 250mph! There will only be 20 units made available and its price will be over €1,000,000 ($1.39 million). Shayton is already accepting preorders for the car, so hurry up!

this intervention addressed the themes of protection, revelation and readability. first, the clear delimitation of the site with a membrane of corten steel to contain the higher perimetrical surface, allowing both access and a panoramic view of the site. stepping down to the site, a hovering structure protects the existing mosaics, its underside covered in a black mirror that allows the visitor to see reflected the vertical perspective of the pavements. for the protection of the eleventh century muslim domestic structures and its frescoes was taken as an opportunity to reproduce, through conjectural interpretation, its spacial experience as a series of independent rooms arranged around a patio that introduced light and ventilation into an otherwise exteriorly isolated dwelling. the evidence of the iron age settlement is exposed and protected trough a self-contained volume that extends from the perimetrical corten walls to embrace the depth necessary to its revelation. the experience is construed by its material protection and musealization.
