Hawaiian energy is very strong and intense in sacred places such as Heiau. Heiau, or temples, usually consist of many pohaku (stones) placed in a certain arrangement, and often contain a pohaku block within, which is the ancient altar.

The first law of thermal dynamics states that energy cannot be created or destroyed. The Hawaiians must have known this as they believed that while the sacredness of a place could perhaps be defiled, it could never be lost.

For example, on the island of Kaua‘i there was a case concerning hotel toilets which consistently failed to flush. Specialists were called in to fix them, but try as they might they were unable to get the toilets to function. Finally the hotel moved the pavilion to a different location. Once this was done, the toilets worked just fine.

Energy extends to sacred places and the objects within them, such as pohaku. Pohaku hold a lot of power and seek to be in their proper place at all times. Many visitors have come to Hawai‘i and removed pohaku from sacred locations, only to experience a string of personal disasters upon returning to their home. At the Bishop Museum you will find scores of letters from visitors who have sent the pohaku back, imploring that they be returned to their home.

Although Hawai‘i is not Mecca, Lhasa or Lourdes, the islands deserve to be recognized as the land of the gods and goddesses. The land is not just filled with sacred objects, the land itself is sacred and blessed. According to Huna, when one makes a journey they must first chant to the place to which they are traveling, because no one else will ever experience what they will experience there. Every experience mixes our own personal consciousness with the sacred power of the particular place. Here in Hawai‘i there are many powerful and mysterious experiences to be had.

October 10th, 2010 was a very powerful and beautiful day in Hawaii for weddings. As a Kahu or Hawaiian spiritual guide, it was a privilege and honor to serve on this very busy wedding day. We were blessed with blue, sunny skies and puffy clouds. The trade winds were gentle and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect!

“Kahu Pomaika’i performed our wedding ceremony on 10/10/10 and we couldn’t have been happier! There were a number of traditional elements incorporated, and she worked closely with us to make sure everything was just the way we wanted it. All of our guests commented on what a great job she did, and how they’d never before paid so much attention to what the “master of ceremonies” was saying at a wedding. It truly was a perfect ceremony, and Kahu Pomaika’i was a pleasure all the way around. I highly recommend her for making your special day unforgettable for everyone involved.”

It is customary for a Hawaiian name to be given for one of three reasons: 1) when a baby is born, 2) by personal request, or 3) when a person enters a new phase of life. The Hawaiian name holds kapumana, which is spiritual power. It also imbues the receiver with the specific spiritual characteristics of that name.

There are different ways in which a Hawaiian name can be given. Sometimes a person passes their Hawaiian name directly on to another, sometimes the name is received directly from aumakua (family or personal gods) through a dream. Other times someone specifically prays to receive the Hawaiian name for someone else, the information coming directly from Akua, or God.

Kahu Pomaika‘i falls into this last category. Pomaika‘i will ask in prayer for the highest spiritual essence of a person to be shown to her. Through insight she then receives the Hawaiian name for this person.

Kahu Pomaika‘i will give private consultations for individuals wishing to receive their Hawaiian name, and also for businesses. Those who do not live in Hawaii yet still wish to receive their Hawaiian name can do so by sending a photograph of themselves along with their request.

Huna literally means hidden secret.

Huna is a modernistic classification given to an ancient belief system thought to have originated before 325 AD. Before Huna a mystery order existed that could be called The Order of ‘Io, the beliefs of which are similar to Huna.

Only fragments of this exist around the earth, because starting in 325 A.D. (it may have started as early as several thousand years B.C., but the effects were definitely under way by 325 A.D.) an attempt to eradicate the balanced systems of the earth initiated. Sometime between 750 and 1250 A.D. Hawaii was effected by this wave of belief system eradication. *

Mystery orders have always existed, most having been historically persecuted and at times even completely eradicated. In India, the system of Tantra was very nearly wiped out; in Western Europe the practice of Wicca has been widely persecuted; in Australia and the Americas the native people have suffered greatly at the hands of others who wished to destroy both their teachings and culture. However, in Hawai‘i, fortunately, the original teachings of the ancestors were successfully preserved by being hidden away within the chants and Hulahula (Hula dances) of the Ancient Ones.

Aloha is the most famous word in Hawai‘i. To many it is a salutation, however in the Hawaiian language (as with many other sacred languages) it contains a hidden code or meaning:

A Aha (Glowing chord) With intent comes creation and essence

L Loa (Length) Extending, lengthening, touching

O O (Root foundation) Building on a strong foundation

Ha Ha (Breath, life) Imbued with the sacred breath of life

A Ao (World, light) You create the light in your world

*

Notice that the letters of each root word are integrated into the word Aloha. This process of disassembling words points to a clue in decoding the magic of Hawaiian words generally, or finding their kaona, or hidden meaning. In Hawaiian, not unlike the Kaballah, words are timeless and create the very thing they describe. Breaking down the words helps us manifest that which the words themselves describe.

Huna is one of the original sciences of healing and spiritual development. As a practice, Huna helps us develop spirituality and personal empowerment. It also helps increase our metaphysical healing powers, as well as our vibrational energy. We do this by becoming aware of the purpose of consciousness, which is the force within us that brings us closer to that which we truly are: spirit, connected to the higher power.

We are all masters of mana, our true creative power, and Huna teaches that each of us carries within us the very essence of god. In Hawai‘i, one skilled in the teachings of this consciousness and these mysteries is known as a Kahuna or Kahu, which is a kind of minister.

With Huna we can achieve love, happiness and success and live in a state of peace and harmony, even in a complicated and at times uncertain world. The ability to live in this state of harmony is called living lokahi. We live lokahi when we finally begin to move and act within the full purpose of our consciousness. Lokahi is a type of consciousness-blossoming, and also demonstrates Ao — the last letter in the world Aloha — and means to actually lift our vibration.

Although Huna is original to the Hawaiian people, it is believed its teachings are based on other teachings far older, dating back approximately 35,000 years. These teachings belonged to no race in particular, but rather to all the people of earth, and came from a great land known as Lemuria or Mu. This land spanned the distance from Australia to as far north as California and then eastward, on to what we now call Japan. The people of Lemuria were a harmonious race, and in many ways far more developed than the “modern” people of this age. They used telepathic communication, for example, as well as shells, crystals and stones in their healing work. It is said that a massive tidal wave ultimately destroyed Lemuria, though portions of it still remain — these portions can now be seen in the glorious mountain peaks of the island chain called Hawai‘i.

Hawai‘i is a beautiful, enchanting land filled with mystery, wonder and magic. Huna is the ancient practice of Hawai‘i, and through it we connect not only to our higher selves, but also to the ultimate highest power from which we originate — which is the power that flows through us all. Huna connects, emboldens, empowers and sweetens life.

We all come from and have access to this power, which is why Huna is for everyone.

Hanohano – Dignity

A middle-aged man walked into a local diner salivating at the smell of cooking hash browns and the sounds of crispy bacon on the skillet. He was hungry and had not eaten a full meal in days. You see, he had taken ill a few months back and lost his job as a salesman. Times were tough and the man had not been able to secure another job.

As he approached the table where he intended to sit, he knew that he had no money in his wallet to pay for his breakfast. He cautiously sat down anyway and contemplated his next move. Embarrassed that he was in this position he stalled and drank his second cup of coffee.

The waiter asked, “Sir, have you decided on your meal this morning?” The man nodded his head shyly and placed his order knowing full well he had no idea how he was going to pay. Shortly thereafter, his meal arrived. He was so ashamed that he was actually eating food in a restaurant with no means to pay for his meal. He gobbled it up anyway and it felt good to have a warm meal in his stomach.

As it came time to pay for his meal, he stalled again drinking yet another cup of coffee. All along, the restaurant manager, who was a very kind man, noticed the man’s reluctance to pay his bill. The manager of the restaurant was a humble gentle-hearted man who often times stopped by the tables of families in the morning to say hello. The manager had a very keen intuition and knew this man was struggling and didn’t have the means to settle the bill that morning. Right before the waiter placed the bill on the man’s table, the manager walked past the man sitting at the table and he cleverly dropped a twenty dollar bill on the floor next to him. The man humbly picked up the twenty dollar bill and looked to see if the manager had noticed. It was as if the manager knew the man was in need and was there to fill it but with no expectations. With great appreciation for the kind manager’s act, the man paid for his meal with the twenty dollar bill he collected from the floor in front of him.

Several years later, the restaurant was sold and re-opened after renovations. They hired a humble, gentle manager who loved the smell of hash browns cooking and the sounds of crispy bacon on the skillet. Some days the restaurant would have large families visit them who were hungry and in need of help. Often, these families were the recipient of a one hundred dollar bill that magically showed up at their feet in the local diner.

You see, the manager had been in this position before. He was familiar with not having the ability to pay for his meal and understood the blessing he received that morning years ago. The kind-hearted manager blessed many families in need at the local diner and was known to bless others by his acts of generosity while allowing others to hold on to their dignity all along.

The sky was gray and thick clouds rolled in the day before a large wedding was scheduled at He‘eia State Park. Many guests were arriving from Japan and the mainland.

Friends and family alike prayed and asked for the weather to clear and the sun to shine on this special day. The morning of the wedding I awoke to blue skies and the sounds of birds singing.

I could feel the excitement in my na‘au (insides, gut) as I prepared for the sacred ceremony. The couple expressed a great need for a Ho‘oponopono ceremony (to make right, put things in their proper order) as both had been in previous relationships including marriages. They shared with me that this was the most important part of the wedding ceremony for them as they felt the need to release the energetic connections from their past relationships in order to move forward with one another.

During the Hawaiian wedding ceremony, He‘eia State Park (located on the East shore of O‘ahu) filled with sunshine. The wind gently caressed our skin as the white clouds above offered shade and a cool breeze washed over the park.

I began the Ho‘oponopono ceremony to cut the AKA cords (energetic connections) of past relationships for this couple. This ceremony includes the use of the most sacred leaf to Hawaiians, the Ti leaf, pa‘akai (blessing salts) holy water, and prayer. The ties of the past are severed and cleansed from the beginning of creation until the present time.

After the AKA cords of past relationships were cut you could feel a lightness of spirit and you could see the weight had been lifted from the couple as they were connected energetically to each other only.

Most often, couples about to be married want to release past relationships and the energy attached to these past relationships. This is where a Ho‘oponopono ceremony is necessary. After the ceremony is conducted these energetic connections no longer serve a purpose or remain. The past is set free and it is time for new beginnings.

As the ceremony came to an end, He‘eia State Park was filled with ua mana (mystical rain), a sign that my work was completed and the ties from the past had been cleansed and purified.

I am so grateful to be able to offer this important part of the wedding ceremony as it is of great value to new couples, same sex couples or any couples renewing their vows who are searching for harmony and lokahi (balance).

Mahalo ke Akua, na Aumakua mau loa.

For example, on the island of Kauai there was a case concerning hotel toilets which consistently failed to flush.

Many visitors have come to Hawaii and removed pohaku from sacred locations, only to experience a string of personal disasters upon returning to their home. At the Bishop Museum you will find scores of letters from visitors who have sent the pohaku back, imploring that they be returned to their home.

Although Hawai’i is not Mecca, Lhasa or Lourdes, the islands deserve to be recognized as the land of the gods and goddesses. Here in Hawaii there are many powerful and mysterious experiences to be had.

A young lady booked a Lomilomi massage with me late in the afternoon at the Kahala Hotel and Resort Spa where I was employed as a massage therapist. We will call her Susi, she was twenty two years old and her sister was twenty three.

Susi and her sister were here on O’ahu for a Hawaiian vacation, they were so excited to experience all the mysteries of Hawaii. I began Susi’s Lomilomi treatment which included an Opu Huli adjustment. Susi was very athletic and seemed to be a very healthy young woman but I soon learned of her full story. I asked her if she had pain in her back and she began to explain. Apparently, she had taken a bad fall off a horse at her home in California. She was an equestrian and owned many horses. Just two years prior she fell from her prize winning horse and broke two of her vertebrae in her back. She told me she had visited many different types of physicians including chiropractors, orthopedists, and surgeons to name a few but no one had addressed her stomach or opu.

When I treated her opu I found it to be turned and twisted to the right. When I checked her leg lengths, one was approximately two and a half inches shorter than the other! No wonder she was in pain! As I gently adjusted her opu she relaxed and was amazed at how important her aligned stomach was to her healthy back. I explained to her simply and in a nutshell that, the stomach is connected to the back and by the opu being in proper alignment, back pain will diminish considerably. The opu treatment did not take more than 20 minutes, which is a lengthy opu huli treatment, most only take a few minutes, but when I was finished she cried and cried tears of joy. She and her sister were overwhelmed with gratitude and relief for her pain was simply gone!

When her treatment was completed, her legs were even! She said now her jeans would fit right and she didn’t have to get special orthopedic shoes made for her! She was thrilled. Thankfully, I did not have another treatment scheduled after theirs, so we sat and talked for almost an hour. They cried and were so grateful for the blessing and miracle of opu huli treatments. How simple yet complex.
