High definition cameras have become more common and have plummeted in price in the last two years, and the ability to store several hundred megabytes of raw video has been the main reason why. HD video eats hard drive space like candy, and you’re going to need the right equipment to do HD composition, and adding in high definition special effects.

High definition composition is something that starts when you shoot the footage. A lot of the techniques used for film cameras are directly applicable to shooting HD footage, and the same techniques used for composing good still shots and mattes are applicable. We’re going to go over some basic concepts of HD composition (and making sure that each scene you shoot is a balanced whole), and then cover putting in high definition special effects.

When dealing with composition in HD video, just like composition in anything else, none of these rules are hard and fast; all can be bent, and some are mutually exclusive. The key is to recognize well composed shots and take the opportunities they present. The most basic rule of composition is that simplicity is important; your viewer is going to be trying to catch your scene in a few seconds. Make sure that there’s a clear foreground and background, and that the transition between elements is chosen appropriately. Likewise, lighting and contrast will call things to the human eye; putting lighter objects against a darker background will have the effect of shining a spotlight on them to your audience; the converse can also work, but is harder to pull off.

The next rule of composition is generally called the rule of thirds; this dates back to theatre work and the perspective drawing techniques developed in the Renaissance; you can divide most scenes that you shoot into three vertical and three horizontal bands; wherever there’s an intersection between these is the place where, psychologically, your audience is going to expect to see something of interest. Use this to guide the eye around what you’re shooting. You can also use this to organize a cluttered scene, by putting the first foreground element at one intersection, and then changing the focus on the next element you want in the scene by making sure it’s in the next intersection. You can also use framing elements to put boundaries on the visual scene to keep the audience’s attention focused where you want it, and framing elements combined with a narrow aperture can be quite effective with a bit of practice. Use of diagonals in an image composition will make it seem more action oriented – even if nothing is happening in the shot.

Costuming, lighting, the colors used, and the other visual elements, even ones that are ‘too fine’ to show up on HD composition, are all conveyed to the viewer. Similarly, adjusting your focus inward (or outward) allows remembered use of textures or colors to fill in details you didn’t even shoot. Also, don’t forget the impact that color has on people’s emotional responses to things

The tedious work comes once you’ve got the footage on the hard drive – composing your video with high definition special effects. There isn’t enough space in this article to really write about high definition special effects in full; each editing package has a set of tools and options that are subtly different from each other, and like editing and polishing a piece of writing, there’s no real upper boundary limit on how much time you can spend on editing a HD video composition.

The first rule is – what’s your deadline? If you’re just getting started, pace yourself. Try things out, and always work with a copy of your footage so that you can roll back. Save early and save often; this is the real reason why video editors and digital media specialists buy machines with terabyte hard drive arrays.

The second rule is to remember to keep it simple. Whenever you have a choice between doing something tedious or doing something simple, try the simple way first, and move on – look back on your edits and see what works and what doesn’t. In most cases, the simpler the effect, the less distracting it will be to your audience, and the less work it will be for you. (There’s a reason why all the packages for video editing have a number of ’simple effects’ baked in – they’re there because professionals don’t want to recreate the simple effects piecemeal.)

Which Should I Choose?

When it comes to choosing an HD camcorder, sometimes it can be a difficult process and decision. For those of you who are not familiar with HD or high definition camcorders, it is a term referring to the level of clarity either a single or a group of images displays on screen or in a photograph. High definition technologies are able to create smoother motion on the screen, enhance colors and display a wide screen view. If you were to look at an HD camcorder buying guide, there would be several tips you may want to consider before purchasing an HD camcorder.

1. Picture Resolution – It is very important that you select an HD camcorder that has a very good picture resolution. If you have a higher resolution, this can be advantageous in several ways. You will be able to capture pictures with better clarity. If you are interested in playing back the media on a computer screen or a large television, you will be able to use a higher resolution to play back your video and not lose any of its quality. You would probably do well to have a camcorder with 3+ megapixels because it may be easy on your wallet.

2. Product Specifications – These are the different details as well as information of a model you are interested in perhaps purchasing. The following are different specs that you want to watch for: digital video format or the “operating system”, image stabilizers that will prevent unnecessary movements like breathing, hand shaking, etc., programs such as close up mode, sunny, night mode, snow, etc., microphone zoom is particularly useful when you zoom in and out, and media such as disks and cards. The larger the storage, the more hours of video you will be able to shoot.

3. Screen Size – When referring to an HD camcorder buying guide, it is very important to consider the size of the screen. If you happen to be recording video, you may first wish to review the video by playing it back on the camcorder’s screen. If you have a larger screen size, this will enable you to preview the recording before deciding to upload it to a computer.

4. Read Product Reviews – Since the Internet is so accessible today, it is easy to look up a product and read what is said about it in the reviews. Make sure that you not only read reviews in magazines geared toward electronics, but pay attention to the reviews that are placed on the Internet. Make sure that the reviews have been around for awhile and are not just some recent posts about someone who is very excited to get their HD camcorder.

5. Practice Makes Perfect – When it comes right down to learning how to use an HD camcorder, you will find that you have to practice, practice and practice. An important point to remember is that focus is extremely crucial with an HD camcorder than with a regular video camera. It may be well worth investing in a tripod to avoid camera shake.

6. Lifelike Quality – This quality is to be considered with high definition recording and/or surround sound. In your HD camcorder buying guide, consider the benefits of an HD camcorder and the fact that it will have surround sound audio capabilities. This will make your video seem much more real, when watching it on your HDTV.

7. Camera Controls – Finally, the last tip would be to try out the controls on the camcorder you are considering to buy. See whether it is a comfortable fit in your hand. Note that with a smaller camcorder, it may be more difficult to hold it steady, and the controls may not be easily accessible when recording.

Hopefully, all of these tips have helped you to make a closer decision on which HD camcorder to purchase. It is extremely important to practice using whichever one you decide to go with. I bought one but my daughters use it more than me! Good luck on making a good decision.

Product Details: Sony has been making electronics for a very long time. The first time anyone really took notice of them was when they created the Playstation. Until then, they were just the name you saw printed on the front of your television set. But now they are creating the Blu-Ray players that you hear so much about. Chances are if you’re here, you’re thinking about buying yourself a Blu-Ray player. So let’s talk about the BDP-S360 and see for ourselves whether or not it lives up to the hype.

Upon inspecting the device, it presents a problem right out of the box. It’s a Blu-Ray player alright, but where is the internet support? Every other Blu-Ray player we’ve seen has offered access to Amazon on Demand or even Netflix. It’s pretty clear that the BDP-S360 is simply a Blu-Ray player and nothing more.

Click Here to Watch the Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player on YouTube

On a brighter note, the BDP-S360 does have Profile 2.0 Support, which is good because by this point most people understand the concept of the profiles. There are some other issues with it. First of all the USB port is recessed, making it hard to put a memory stick in if you wish to listen to MP3’s. The remote lacks an eject button, and a few other design flaws.

All that aside, we have to admit that the thing is very attractive. It does have a nice glossy finish on the front, but the rest of the device isn’t glossy at all. So what does that mean? It means you won’t need to worry about leaving excessive fingerprints on the BDP-S360! That’s always a good thing, trust us, because you don’t want to leave oily fingerprints all over your device.

More than likely you’re probably wondering about the quality of the BDP-S360. You will be quite happy to know that its picture and sound is second to none with most Blu-Ray movies. You will probably also be quite happy to know that it is very competitively priced, costing anywhere between $175 to $300. The BDP-S360 is not the cheapest on the market, but it comes pretty close!

So what we are essentially dealing with here is a basic Blu-Ray player. If you are thirsting for internet access, streaming video and the like, you’re not going to find it here. If what you’re looking for is a basic player that is able to play the latest movies that you can buy at the store, then the BDP-S360 is likely the best choice for you. We would say this is basically for those just starting out in the world of Blu-Ray players that just want to sit at home and enjoy a movie without the hassle of all those other features. After all, those pesky internet features tend to get in the way!

*** Click Here to Purchase the Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player ***

Product Details: The Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player allows people to get Blu-Ray at an affordable price.

In a world where the high end Blu-Ray players are all the rage, it’s also a world where they’re extremely expensive. Many people want to get in on the Blu-Ray phenomenon, but they just cannot find the extra padding in their wallet at the end of the month, and when a Blu-Ray player is more than $500 they simply cannot justify the expense. It makes sense, after all, considering that money could be spent on those pesky things like food clothing and shelter.

Luckily Samsung has created the BD-P1500 Blu-Ray player which is now Profile 2.0 compatible so long as you feel like performing a harmless firmware update. Firmware updates can be executed by utilizing the Ethernet port on the back of the device. That being said, we now come to the device itself.

Click Here to Watch the Samsung BD-P1500 Blu-ray Disc Player on YouTube

The device looks just like any other Blue-Ray player, but luckily Samsung has ditched the overly-glossy exterior this time. Normally Samsung liked to gloss everything, and as you know that tends to attract fingerprints. With the BD-P1500 you don’t need to worry about this because only the front plate is glossed over. This eliminates those moments where you look at your entertainment center and wonder what happened over there.

You won’t have any trouble getting used to the remote; the BD-P1500 comes with the exact same remote that Samsung has used for years. Luckily there are brail nubs that will help you find the right buttons even if it’s dark. A backlight probably would have helped with that too.

One thing that’s likely to upset some people are the lack of analogue outputs. That is to say there are no analogue outputs. Those with HDTV’s probably aren’t going to be put off by this because they’ve all become familiar with the glory of the HDMI cable, but those who are still using analogue televisions are probably going to be someone put off by this fact. You have to wonder why Samsung did not include analogue with the BD-P1500, after all, it is a discount Blu-Ray player, and many of the people interested in it might be owners of older television sets.

So basically what you’re dealing with is a highly discounted Blu-Ray player, and it is discounted because of the pricing that many retailers have enforced. You will be looking at paying somewhere around $130 for this, which isn’t bad when it comes to players of this type. So all in all, this is a great choice for someone on a budget. It won’t have the crystal clear quality of the top of the line Blu-Ray players, but it is worlds apart from DVD players which is all that matters in the long run.

Bad Aspects: CinemaNow is not quite as well devised as Amazon video on demand; similar cost to a PS3.

Product Review: LG is a name that has always been associated with quality. That is to say that most of their products have been high quality, but there are a few instances where they might have done a little more research before releasing a product. Let’s take the LG BD 390 Blu-Ray player for example.

There is no doubt that this is a great Blu-Ray player. It’s features include near perfect image quality, access to Wi-Fi, Youtube, Netflix, and even CinemaNow. It can even play files from a USB drive, which is to say it can take advantage of flash drives and USB hard drives. This is perfect if you want to turn it into an MP3 player for a while, and many people do.

Click Here to Watch the LG BD390 Blu-ray Disc Player on YouTube

It is an excellent player, featuring incredibly fast loading time, and as a standalone it truly stands out. For those who want a Blu-Ray player with access to the latest movies and videos this is perfect. There are a few things that need to be addressed before anyone purchases it however. It’s access to CinemaNow and Netflix means that you will be able to see movies on demand even if you lack cable or satellite. The player has one gigabyte of onboard memory, meaning that you’ll be able to store several movies on the device, and more if you decide to utilize the services of a memory stick.

First of all, the CinemaNow is not quite as well devised as Amazon on demand. Secondly there is the price issue. You can purchase this unit for anywhere between $200 and $300. If you remember, that was about the price of the DVD player when it was first released, which was fine because there wasn’t anything like it, at least not as far as anyone knew.

Now that the Playstation 3 has dropped in price to $299, people may opt to purchase it for it’s Blu-Ray capabilities instead. That’s not to say it’s a sure thing, but some who want more functionality might just go for it. This is particularly true since the majority of the multimedia audience, at least those who would buy this type of device are gamers.

That by itself isn’t enough to condemn the player, and nether is the fact that users of the LG BD 390 have stated it has lip syncing issues. Apparently it has other flaws as well, which several other users have reported. Do all of these things make it a bad purchase?

The answer is absolutely not, if you think about it, every new piece of technology past or present has had some sort of issue. For example, the original Delta faucet leaked. Did they give up on it? No, they went back and reworked it. This is what’s going to happen with the Blu-Ray players, especially the LG BD 390. The question as to whether gamers are going to buy this instead of the Playstation 3 however really is a legitimate question. But no matter how you look at it, the LG BD 390 has the market when it comes to standalone Blu-Ray players, and it shows no signs of letting go.

*** Click Here to Purchase the LG BD 390 Blu-ray Disc Player ***

Good Aspects: User-friendly, durable and compact design; compatible with VholdR’s TRailTM Mounts; rechargeable lithium ion battery; capable of capturing video at both 30 FPS in HD mode and 60 FPS in SD mode; compatible with both PC and Mac.

Bad Aspects: 2 hours of battery life; 60 FPS video capturing in SD mode is unsupported on DVDs and YouTube.

Product Review: The ContourHD is the obvious next step in helmet cam technology designed for shooting high quality video for sporting activities. It shoots 720p HD video at 30 FPS which satisfies even the most demanding videographers. An improved video processor and image sensor ensures that colors are as rich and vibrant on video as they are in real life.

The ContourHD is compatible with up to 16GB microSD memory cards and is capable of storing up to 8 hours of HD video. The camera features a single, oversized record button, for easily recording the action during sporting activities. Simply slide the record button forward to begin recording and slide back to stop. A rotating 192-degree lens and two lasers help users accurately align shots. Users simply rotate the lens until the lasers are lined up horizontally. It also features an advanced microphone for eliminating all the wind noise while ambient sounds remain clear.

The ContourHD is compatible with VholdR’s TRailTM Mounts, providing a variety of options, including mounts for helmets, goggles, vehicles, and handlebars. The helmet mount and goggle strap mount are included with the camera. The helmet mount is highly adaptable and can be attached to most hard surfaces and helmets. The goggle strap mount is quite convenient to use and provides a cool point of view. It also comes with VholdR’s Easy EditTM software (PC and Mac compatible) for easy editing, uploading, and sharing of your videos with family, friends, and the world.

The ContourHD is equipped with a 135-degree fisheye lens to record the entire scene without over-distorting the video. The standard definition mode on the ContourHD is actually just cropped from the full frame size so the field of view is 90 degrees. The best part about SD mode is its 60 FPS, which makes for a surprisingly impressive video. The video still has a resolution of 848×480 in widescreen, which exceeds most other helmet cams on the market. While the ability to capture 60 FPS is exciting, it isn’t particularly useful for distributing video because YouTube and DVDs do not support 60 FPS. However, VholdR’s video sharing portal will support 60 FPS, and for those not using VholdR’s portal, a potential solution is to stretch out the video to 30 frames per second.

While the camcorder features a rechargeable lithium ion battery, testing revealed that the ContourHD has a limited battery life of approximately two hours. However, backup batteries can be used to avoid missing a shot. Another attractive upgrade from the VholdR is the car charger which is capable of charging your ContourHD off of any 12 volt power source while recording. Combine this with an 8 or 16GB card and you can record some serious footage!

With all of these features, a delicate or cumbersome camcorder might be expected. However, the advanced Contour HD weighs only 116g (4oz), is compact, and durable. The camcorder’s water-resistant body is made of anodized aluminium and meticulously tested to withstand mud, snow, dirt and dust. Additionally, the ContourHD is shock, vibration, and impact resistant, and the all-in-one design of the Contour HD means that users don’t have to manage multiple wires. Overall, it is one of the best HD camcorders for sport.
