Marion has been focused on one core idea, that when you walk into a space, there should be an emotional connection to the way it looks and feels.

That belief has guided everything we do, from early work in wallcoverings and interiors to pioneering healthcare environments designed to feel more human, more local, and more connected to the people who use them.

Today, we’re excited to share the next chapter in that journey: we’ve Joined TurningArt, a national art consulting platform.

This partnership allows us to expand what we can offer to our clients while continuing to work the way we always have, collaboratively, thoughtfully, and with a deep focus on design. Through TurningArt, we now have access to:

A national network of over 4,000 independent artists

Expanded fabrication and installation partners across the country

Infrastructure to support multi-location and large-scale programs

What this means in practice is more flexibility, more scalability, and more opportunity to bring the right solution to each project.

TurningArt is a national full-service art consultation firm specializing
in workplace, healthcare, and commercial environments.

What This Means for Our Clients

What hasn’t changed is just as important: our team remains the same, our process remains the same, our commitment to thoughtful, tailored design remains the same.

We’ll continue to approach each project as we always have, starting with the people, the space, and the story the design needs to tell. The difference is that we now have expanded resources behind us to support projects of any size or complexity, without compromising the level of care and attention our clients expect.

Building on a Strong Foundation

H. Marion has always believed that art plays a critical role in shaping how people experience a space.

From helping redefine healthcare environments in the 1980s to developing programs rooted in Evidence-Based and Biophilic Design, our work has been centered on creating spaces that feel welcoming, intentional, and human.

That work continues – with this next chapter, we’re able to build on that foundation, bringing greater reach and flexibility to the environments we help create, while staying grounded in the same principles that have guided us from the beginning.

Looking Ahead

We’re proud of the relationships we’ve built and the work we’ve done over the past four decades, and we’re excited about what this partnership allows us to do moving forward. If you’re planning a project, or simply want to learn more about how we’re evolving, we’d love to connect.

Let’s Start the Conversation

– Richard Taylor via taylorsculpt.com

Here at H. Marion Framing we are very happy to feature Richard Taylor in our Winnetka showroom. We currently have 4 pieces on display, a piece named “Whitewater”, and a series Taylor has named “Bookshop.” Each Piece uses a mix of materials such as aluminum, enamel paint, and varnish to create a multidimensional, colorful, textured and timbred work of art.

Based out of Milwaukee, Taylor has described this work on his website as a visual representation paying homage to his upbringing in rural Wisconsin and the architecture and agriculture he was surrounded by.

He wrote,

“Growing up in Wisconsin left me with a love and enduring appreciation for the geometry and gentle flow of the agricultural landscape. The plowed rows of earth, parallel lines of cornstalks and linear demarcations of crops paint a quiet, lush carpet on the native soil. Atop this rolling canvas sit groups of farm buildings in endless variations. Barns, silos, sheds and houses form little villages in each separate farmyard. The result is unending poetry. These wall sculptures are my ode to this landscape and to its subtle but enduring beauty.”

We have installed everything from family photo groupings to monumental corporate projects. During that time, we learned a few tricks to create a flawless presentation. Here are our top tips:

Choosing a Location

Proper proportions are always the best rule of thumb in choosing a location for a piece of art, or a grouping. Consider the use of the space, if in a dining room where users will generally be seated, hang your art a bit lower. If the audience is shorter in height (a pediatric environment) or in wheelchairs, trend lower. Conversely, if users are unusually tall, like the time we hung art for the Chicago Bulls, art was installed a bit on the high side. Factor in ceiling heights, sizes, position of furniture, architectural features, and lighting elements. Its best to have all the furniture in place first as you’re aiming for balance. Remember, every rule might be modified based on actual room conditions and décor.

Determining Height

When determining height, our installers generally hang art at 60” on center; but what does that mean? That is calculated by measuring the art height, dividing that by 2 and adding to 60. So, if a piece of art measures 40” high, the top of the frame will be at 80” off the ground (40” / 2 = 20” + 60”).

Hanging Art With a Wire

If the art is being hung by a wire, measure the back of the frame, from the top of the art to the taught part of the wire. Transfer that measurement down from that 80” mark on the wall and that’s where you’ll sink your picture hook. If the piece is heavy, consider two hooks. If really heavy, consider an anchor or trying to hit a stud. If you’re hanging a mirror or something you don’t want to cant forward from the slack in a wire, then use a French cleat from the top rail.

Avoid Adhesives

Just as they say in the kitchen, if you’re making an omelet, you’ll have to crack a few eggs. Never rely on adhesives, tape, or Command Strips; just be prepared to make a hole in the wall! Remember that every adhesive (including Command Strips) will eventually fail over time. And that art will eventually fall off the wall, which typically happens in the middle of the night!

First, Create an Arrangement on the Floor!

When hanging a grouping, the easiest method is to lay out all the art sizes and shapes onto the floor directly in front of the wall where you intend to install. If the art pieces are all the same size, and you like symmetry, just find the center and go! Align the tops, stagger them, be creative! If art sizes vary and you like something more random, create a pleasing grouping on the floor, then transfer those measurements to the wall starting in the center.

Want to Do Something Unusual With Random Sized Pieces?

Hang them in a straight line, aligning the bottom of each piece letting the tops create a random pattern. This makes it look like they’re all sitting on an invisible shelf!

Hanging Larger Pieces

Larger scale pieces in a 2-story setting might require scaffolding. Select the appropriate setup making sure to protect walls, floors, railings from the metal ladders and planks.

Take all precautions for the safety of the installers. Rehearse hand placements and work in lock step with your helper. Remove tripping hazards and try and visualize every step of the art handling process so there are no awkward surprises when handling something large while suspended over a long drop.

For super-sized environments, consider scaffolding or a scissor lift. You might want to engage a professional at this point. We would love to help you out! Contact our professional art installers for any of your needs. We look forward to collaborating with you.

While this is invaluable for this particular type of unit, the boxes themselves have presented some issues in the past. Resident’s loved ones usually provide the mementos, but in situations when families are not involved or a unit changes function, the boxes can be left empty. The architectural nature of these millwork features creates complications if the intended use of the space should change. Unit changes do not simply mean changing out a piece of art, but rather entails a costly removal and patching process of the memory box.

After building a new addition, one of their memory care units changed to a short-term rehabilitation unit. The hospital administration elected not to remove the recessed boxes due to the possibility that the care center may convert the space back into a memory care unit.

In the absence of an organized plan, the boxes became receptacles of an assortment of unrelated collection of objects. Director of Healthcare Design, Pam Rosenberg, devised a plan to create a unique theme for each box utilizing vintage and current collectibles presented in mixed media vignettes. The collectibles highlight topics of nostalgia and everyday life; from card games to sports, and even a ‘sundae shop’ themed box, all designs are intended to evoke positive memories and associations, and become a talking point for residents, prompting them to socialize and allowing them to connect as a community.

Boxes are not only visually interesting, they serve multiple functions within the space. Repurposing the boxes allows the facility to incorporate visual interest and overcome a budgetary challenge in a cost effective and creative manner. The design complements a space that can now easily be transitioned in case of a shift in use, and the interactive nature inspires residents to be more active as they walk and enjoy exploring the fun details hidden in each design.

Here are some tips from the pros:

Still planning? Think about using a simple matted paper or stretched canvas for people to sign. Guests can also sign small wooden tokens and drop them into a customized shadowbox ‘memory bank’. Both of these are unique takes on the traditional guestbook.

Take Care of Business. For couple’s whose weddings include a ketubah, it is important to have your ketubah mounted before the ceremony. We recommend matting in a neutral color, but a colored double mat can be a great way to support your theme. Flip open the front cover to sign during the ceremony, and display on an easel at the reception; the ketubah stays protected by the included mylar window.

Think Ahead. Collect small mementos (invitation, favors, etc.) from the shower or ceremony and incorporate them into a shadowbox with other items like the engagement or wedding photos as a gift for the happy couple! Dry press flowers from the bouquets or centerpieces to add texture and visual interest to the assembly. Want to make it more special? Make a copy of the marriage certificate and print it on high quality or colored paper to coordinate with the wedding décor.

Take it to another dimension: Our shadowboxes are completely customizable and we are prepared to help you find a framing solution for ANY dimensional item, no matter the shape or size. From dried bouquets to cake toppers and service ware-even accessories can be kept in pristine condition for years to come.

Wow them! Customize the frame assembly with unique mat cuts or written script designs. The couple’s initials, names, wedding date, or a verse from their favorite song is a thoughtful addition to the design. A wide variety of colored and textured mats ensures the finished product will be perfect in any space.

Our framing techniques can elevate the piece from simply a memory into a sophisticated, lifelong treasure. Every element of the design process is customizable, therefore the options are limitless!

The primary goal for the art program at Jennie Sealy Hospital was to demonstrate the health system’s connection to the island community. H. Marion’s design team achieved this by means of a carefully curated local artist program utilizing local imagery and materials when possible.

For the meditation room the client requested a feature piece that would create a serene and peaceful atmosphere more spiritual than religious in interpretation, and peaceful and welcoming to whomever steps foot inside. After visiting many galleries and speaking with locals, our design team met with Houston native glass artist, Kim Clark Renteria. The resulting beautiful stained-glass window was commissioned to serve as a continuously evolving piece of art. While the stained glass itself is static, the ever-present play of migrating light from the lobby through the colored, textured panes creates a constantly shifting ethereal glow.

As discussed in the accompanying artist’s statement, Kim did a wonderful job to ensure the finished design embodies the spirit and personality of the island by including vintage plates and glass discs, drawing deep into the historic past of the island community. The soft natural colors of the island are represented in the carefully placed panes and flowing textures, conjuring up memories of sand and surf as they refract light into interesting patterns on the adjacent wall. Combined with the large-scale fluffy cloud wall covering illuminated by recessed lighting in the ceiling, this custom piece helps creates a truly peaceful, healing respite within the hospital.

Chances are, what you want to frame would benefit from preservation framing. After all, if you’re framing it, you want to protect it and make it last for as long as possible. Items can be preserved for years to come with preservation framing techniques, such as glass or acrylic that filters our ultraviolet light, reversible mounting methods, and sealing the frame package to minimize the effects of humidity or extreme changes in temperature.

Another important aspect of preserving your art is to use the right matboard. Ask us about preservation-grade matboards that are acid-free and safely surround the art. These matboards prevent the yellowing and degradation of paper. Preservation matboards are available in a wide variety of colors and textures and enhance any framing project. Creative matting enriches and adds to the beauty of the artwork while keeping it safe for the future.

Some of the best picture walls display a very eclectic mix of sizes, colors and styles that reflects a range of personal preferences and experiences.

The artwork may be united by a theme, subject matter, or by media. Perhaps color is the unifying factor: color-themed picture walls can have a vibrant impact without committing to a fresh coat of paint. You needn’t limit your wall to just pictures either: enhance your arrangement by including mirrors, shelves, or objects in the mix.

Determine your spacing before hanging: try organizing the picture arrangement on the floor in front of the wall where it will hang, then hang pieces one-by-one. To get a more accurate visualization, cut pieces of newspaper to the size of the framed items and tape them to the wall with removable tape.

When placing several different sizes of frames and art together, arrange each piece so that one outside edge is in line with another picture next to it, either vertically or horizontally. This technique helps bring a sense of balance to the grouping. Keep the space between frame edges fairly small to visually “gather the group together”. The grouping can build from the center and spread out in all directions. Or you can plan to have it develop into a rectangular shape. Irregular shapes are best if you plan to add to the wall over time.

While light is necessary to enjoy your picture wall, avoid direct sunlight or other strong direct light on the art. Keep track lighting and overhead picture lights away from close contact with artwork – heat from the bulbs can cause damage to the art, and fluorescent lights (including the new compact curly bulbs) may cause artwork to fade.

A picture wall can be a significant design element in your home or office and a great source of enjoyment. Select a wall, gather a few of your favorite images, and let our designers help to get you started.

A: While in the initial design phases of this project we recognized that this campus has a 125+ year history of serving the local and medical communities. Some notable accomplishments: they have been credited for curing the bubonic plague, continue their involvement with NASA, are a frontrunner in Zika, Ebola, and infectious disease care, and have survived multiple large hurricanes…and they are STILL a leader in healthcare.

We took this proud heritage and began the design process carefully curating then proposing seven different focuses for the walls: Research, Architecture, Medical School, Nursing, Patient Care, Health Professions, and Texas. The final design bridges the gap between the founding of UTMB and the present day with an engaging, thoughtful, history display.

Q: In your opinion, what role do these history panels play in the patient and visitor experience at UTMB?

A: I imagine that many of the patients and visitors will have different experiences; some will be from out of town, some local…some will be rushing across the campus to make an appointment, and others will be taking their time going to the cafeteria. I like to think that no matter who walks past these historical displays and how much time they take to look at them or read the accompanying description plaques, that they will feel the connection between those photos and where they are standing.

A: Aesthetic value and other interpretations of value are not mutually exclusive. While the photographic compositions are beautiful, we hope that the narrative this feature branding display creates offers an engaging, positive distraction for patients and visitors alike. The legacy of this health system not only greatly impacts the community, but continues to positively impact the medical field itself-this visual display makes the narrative of that legacy accessible to everyone.

The history wall also functions as a wayfinding landmark on UTMB’s expansive campus; simplifying navigation works towards the overall improvement of the patient experience as well.

Q: As a designer, what was your favorite part of the creative process?

A: I loved working in the archives and doing research about the significance of each photo. At the Moody Medical Library we worked with the Manager of Library Services, Sarita Oertling, in the Truman G. Blocker History of Medicine Collections. I could pull one photo out of thousands and she knew who the people were and the occasion of the photo at a quick glance. Sarita had the entire collection memorized! I learned so much about Galveston and UTMB that I walked away when the project completed thinking “I could be a tour guide.”
