Fri, Nov. 27 - Soul Clap at Thirtyninehotel

What is Soul Clap? According to party founder and Nocturnal Sound Krew (NSK) member Steven 'ESKAE' Kanemoto, Soul Clap is simply about 'making people dance to music they never realized they liked.'

What started as a random, Friday-night party has exploded into Honolulu's go-to event for ground breaking dance music and the best in classic party music. Over the last 2 years ESKAE and Soul Clap DJs – and fellow NSK members – Jami and Compose have redefined what is considered club music and how it's played. 'Our philosophy is that a DJ should be able to play any music genre without losing a single person on the dance floor,' says Jami referring to Soul Clap's mix of Hip Hop, Soul, Electro, 80's and party classics.

Soul Clap has received numerous praises and recognition from the Honolulu Star Bulletin, Midweek, SMART magazine, Honolulu Nightlife Diaries and other media outlets. The Honolulu Advertiser has referred to Soul Clap as, 'the club equivalent of an eclectic, well-stocked iPod on party shuffle mode for five hours,'

Soul Clap happens every last Friday of the month at Thirtyninehotel in the heart of downtown Honolulu.

Soul Clap from Sharks & Rays on Vimeo.

Sat, Nov. 28 - Mae & Owl City at Pipeline Cafe

Boasting a sound that straddles the border of alternative rock and emo-pop, Mae (an acronym for Multisensory Aesthetic Experience) was formed in early 2001 by guitarist Matt Beck, drummer Jacob Marshall, bassist Mark Padgett, keyboardist Rob Sweitzer, and vocalist Dave Elkins. The band initially started out as a project between Elkins and Marshall in Norfolk, Virginia. Recording sessions were booked at Padgett's home studio, and the duo quickly grew into a quintet as the co-founders rubbed shoulders with other local musicians. Nearly eight months later, Mae had cemented its sound and landed local shows with the likes of the Movielife, River City High, and the Exit. In the process, the group also recorded songs for a debut album, Destination: Beautiful, which was released in early 2003 by Tooth & Nail.

Kaleidoscope is back with live bands weekly, DJ Ross Jackson and guests at thirtyninehotel!

For the past two years, Kaleidoscope has been presenting underground indie, rock, and pop music in Honolulu like no one else. By combining local bands, DJs, and musicians that play a genre of music styles that fall far away from the norm heard in the club scene, Kaleidoscope has been the place to be for the independent rockers, artsy hipsters, and open minded young people; a safe haven for those needing to escape all that is packaged and mainstream. The only Tuesday event catering to the indie scene of Hawaii, Kaleidoscope offers something unique to Honolulu nightlife. Come see for yourself.
