Boasting a sound that straddles the border of alternative rock and emo-pop, Mae (an acronym for Multisensory Aesthetic Experience) was formed in early 2001 by guitarist Matt Beck, drummer Jacob Marshall, bassist Mark Padgett, keyboardist Rob Sweitzer, and vocalist Dave Elkins. The band initially started out as a project between Elkins and Marshall in Norfolk, Virginia. Recording sessions were booked at Padgett's home studio, and the duo quickly grew into a quintet as the co-founders rubbed shoulders with other local musicians. Nearly eight months later, Mae had cemented its sound and landed local shows with the likes of the Movielife, River City High, and the Exit. In the process, the group also recorded songs for a debut album, Destination: Beautiful, which was released in early 2003 by Tooth & Nail.

This 10-mile run, scheduled for November 26, 2009 at Kapiolani Park Bandstand, awards prizes to those who finish closest to their own predicted finishing time. Ready, Set, Trot! The Honolulu Marathon Clinic presents its annual Turkey Trot, a Thanksgiving Day tradition since 1974, where the fastest runner rarely wins the top prize. This 10-mile run, scheduled for November 26, 2009 at Kapiolani Park Bandstand, awards prizes to those who finish closest to their own predicted finishing time. “Why 10 miles? Because we know that the mistakes we make in the first 10 miles of the marathon will haunt us in the last 6. The Turkey Trot is to be run at the same easy pace as the first ten miles of the marathon; trying to hold back the pace when our body tells us to go for it,” says Clinic Director Dr. Jack Scaff Registration starts at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand at 6:30 a.m. and the run begins as soon as all are registered, so participants are advised to arrive early. Each runner is given a tongue depressor blade on which they write their name and their predicted finish time to the second. At the finish line, the blades are collected and times listed. Awards will be given to those coming closest to their own predicted finish time; also, there will be random drawings of finisher names for door prizes. Entry fee is $$3; no watches, headphones, or pacing devices are allowed.

While on tour, members of the Yah Mos, including !!! singer Nic Offer, envisioned forming a band oriented more toward danceable music, and once they returned to Sacramento, CA, their hometown, they decided to turn their working concept into an actual group. The band quickly grew into an eight-member ensemble, including Mario Andreoni on guitar, Offer on vocals, Justin van der Volgen on bass, Dan Gorman on trumpet and percussion, Tyler Pope on guitar, Allan Wilson on saxophone and percussion, John Pugh on drums, and Jason Racine on percussion. Fusing the groove-oriented style of James Brown's backing band with the edginess of Gang of Four and the Contortions and featuring an expansive percussive presence, !!! spent its first few years as a group developing its sound and playing at house parties for friends in Sacramento. At the same time, Offer, Pope, and van der Volgen were playing in a dub-inflected instrumental outfit called Out Hud with Molly Schnick and Phyllis Forbes, two musicians who used to be in the band Raoul. After putting out a 7' on Hopscotch Records and a split single with Out Hud in 1998, the two bands decide to release a split full-length together in 1999, a release jointly sponsored by the Sacramento-based label Gold Standards Laboratories, founded by Sonny Kaye of Angel Hair and the VSS fame, and Zum, a San Francisco-based zine. After extensive touring of the States, which gave them a chance to further expand the songs they had written by placing them in the interactive context of a live show, !!! recorded and released a self-titled album on GSL in December 2000. Soon after, the band re-entered the studio and recorded enough material for a second album. Members of the band moved to New York, but the group still remained intact, planning regional tours and tape trades across the expanses of the Midwest. In 2003, the band issued Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story), their first release for Touch and Go. They followed it with 2004's politically charged Louden Up Now (mixed by Maurice Fulton) and 2007's relatively lighthearted Myth Takes. Josh Eppert, All Music Guide

Cabaret Paradis takes place in Jazz Nights, a New York club, featuring the biggest musical sensation, Sir Joseph. Jazz Nights is an upscale club, where for one night, the paths of struggling artists, waiters, students and even lawyers intertwine. The Ukulele Guild of Hawaii, a Hawaii non-profit, will be holding its 8th Annual Ukulele Exhibition and Conference on saturday and sunday, November 21st and 22nd, 2009, at the Princess Kaiulani Hotel in Waikiki.

The exhibition will feature a large collection of custom ukuleles, handcrafted by guild members. Admission is free. Exhibition hours are: saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..

There will be giveaways of ukuleles by random drawings.

Anyone who may be interested in learning more about the ukulele, is welcomed to enroll in our ukulele playing or building seminars for a small fee. Following a titillating tour in summer '95 between Popesmashers and Black Liquorice, !!! officially formed upon their return at one of the famously ultra-hot, all-night Sacramento, CA dance parties. The tour had provided the attendees - and a few of the band members - with plenty to think about. Black Liquorice came with disco covers without the kitsch, and Popesmashers followed with loud, propulsive noise. The combination of these styles seemed odd to some, but it worked in the most primal sense, leading the aforementioned band members and others to wonder - Why NOT feel this? All the fucking time. The eight members of !!! had grown up playing various breeds of punk and experimental music (!!! frontman Nic was vocalist for the infamous hardcore band, Yah Mos), and increasingly found themselves wanting to play music in the vein of the stuff they were dancing to. Which is not to say !!! are a punk band, nor a funk band, for that matter. They are both. And neither. The !!! symbol was chosen, rather than a conventional band name, because it reflects the excitement shared by the band members, mixed with an intense desire to shake things up. They have toured the U.S. repeatedly, amassing a sizeable following thanks to their cathartic live shows. The years spent train-hopping, hitch-hiking and touring DIY style have forged a desire to take !!! everywhere, fast. !!! shares three of its members with Out Hud, including Tyler Pope, who is also in LCD Soundsystem. !!! has released a 12' split EP with Out Hud, as well as a seven-inch on Hopscotch called 'Dis-ease'. A self-titled debut came out on GSL in 2000, which included the nine minute manifesto, 'There's No Fucking Rules, Dude' - an exhortation to forget your worries and just shake your ass... dude. Got it? !!! is John Pugh (drums), Nic Offer (vocals), Allan Wilson (percussion, horns), Mario Andreoni (guitar), Tyler Pope (guitar, keys), Justin Vandervolgen (bass, sound engineering tweaks), Dan Gorman (percussion, horns), and Jason Racine (percussion).

Like the traditional high school prom, the Goth Bat King and Queen will take
