Closets are always a tough entity to keep organized, especially if you don't own the house the closet is in

They come in all shapes and sizes, and aren't always properly equipped to handle your wardrobe. In fact, they rarely are more than long hanger bars with a shelf overhead. It can cost thousands of dollars to have a quality custom closet system installed, and if you are renting, you really don't want to spend more than $20 to make your closet usable. Additionally, many people have tons of stuff in their closet that they just push aside and never really know how to deal with the clutter, or how to purge.

That's where I come in.

This is my closet, and yes, it actually looks like this:

These tips I am about to outline will help you make your closet more user-friendly and clutter-free without bspending hardly any money.

First things first. If you are fortunate enough to have lighting in your closet, spend the money on new bulbs. Your light fixture will tell you how high a wattage it will accept. Just be sure you do not use clear bulbs, as they cast shadows, and aren't as bright. If your fixture is particularly cheap and you know how to change one (or want to learn), you can buy a new one for very little that has aimable lamps, and replace it yourself.

Secondly, examine your hangers. If they are broken, assorted cast-offs, or cheap, it is time to replace them. Your new hangers should be sturdy, and somewhat uniform. You can match them exactly if you like, but it is more important that they are functional. Try to limit the types to no more than 3.

Now, here comes the fun part. Completely empty your closet. Absolutely every thing comes out. Clean the closet, top to bottom, and don't forget to vacuum the crevices and tops of the baseboards.

Get a notepad and pen, a few plastic bags, your laundry hamper, and a pair of scissors. Set up your plastic bags for trash and donation. Anything you want to give to a friend or consign, keep them on the old hangers, but do not put them back in your closet! You can stow them in your coat closet until you get rid of them, but if they make it back into your closet, you will end up keeping them. TRUST ME!

Now for the purge:

Purging can be hard simply because we become attached to clothes. So here's the rule: You can keep 2 pieces of clothing that you have an attachment to. That can be your favorite holey shorts to lounge in, your prom dress from 1992, or even that pair of jeans you don't fit in, but will soon because you are a slave to the gym. It is a hard choice to make, but it is also how your closet can quickly become overwhelmed with things you never wear.

Just remember, if you have to change outfits more than twice to find something you can wear, you need to purge.

The best course of action in purging is to figure out A) does it fit well? B) is it in good shape? C)will you wear it again in the next year? D) and do you still love it? If you can't answer yes to all 4 questions, it has to go.

Anything that is a staple in your wardrobe, but has seen better days, needs to go. Instead of keeping it, write it down in your notepad as something you need to replace ASAP. If you put it back in the closet, you will never remember to replace it.

Now is also the time to launder anything in your closet which needs it. Closets have a knack for picking up odd smells, dust, and animal hair. Also, shoving clothes into a too-full closet will wrinkle and distort clothing. Nothing goes back in your closet unless it is in pristine condition.

Examine your trash items before you throw them out. Use the scissors to salvage any usable ribbons, bows, buttons, etc. This is great if you are crafty, but especially useful if you find you often need to sew a button on a different shirt. You can also cut out a piece of fabric to save if you want to replace something and need a visual to show a salesperson. Take digital photos of the whole article of clothing if necessary. Remember, you have to overcome every excuse you might have to feel the need to keep something you don't actually need.

Now, reloading the closet well:

Take a look at the layout of your closet. If your closet is like mine, you seem to always need access to the stupid box in it that contains all the cables for the house. Arrange your closet so it is convenient to you.

I use a large sturdy plastic bureau to contain all my socks and nighties and such. It fits perfectly under the box, and allows full access to it while keeping things tidy. The unusable clothing bar above it now houses belts, scarves, and extra hangers.

Rehang all your clothes neatly and portion them out so they are convenient to find. You do not need to color coordinate them, but it might be prudent to align them so things like camis and tanks don't get lost in your bulky sweaters, like I do.

Absolutely all the clothes I own are hung in the closet. They are not folded up in drawers or hung on shelves, with the exception of a few pairs of shorts. Hanging all your clothes ensures they do not become wrinkled during storage, nor become lost. I never have to dig through folded drawers to find my favorite tank and in the process undo all the folding.

I also do not push all my clothing into the corners of the closet. I keep them front and center, which keeps certain pieces from falling into disuse, as well as keeping my 17 year old persian from sleeping in the corners and hairing up my new Anthropologie pants.

I keep my shoes off the floor for the exact same reason. I keep them high up and out of reach of the animals. I only own about a dozen pairs of shoes, and they are worn often enough that they do not need special care from dust. But in your case (if you own way more pairs than I do) you might need to keep them in sturdy containers as high off the ground as you can.

Use inexpensive boxes to house things that need to stay dust-free. My hat boxes have hats and purses in them. There are many places on-line that sell functional and pretty boxes, but you can also use things you have around the house to contain things.

I find it important to decorate a bit with my items. Draping scarves over bars, and boxes add appeal. I use hooks to hang pretty purses and space out objects. Showcasing items in your closet helps you assemble an ensemble without having to deal with excessive eye clutter.

Now, here's the big tip to keeping your closet clean:

When you take an item off the hanger to wear it, don't put it back where it was, or yank the shirt off and allow it bounce back all wonky. Make a spot on your hanger bar specifically for empty hangers. It takes very little effort to remove a hanger and place it with the other empty hangers. Not only does it keep your closet looking nice, but it makes it easier to find the hangers when you are doing laundry.

When you do laundry, take the time to space out your clothes once everything is hung up. It will keep them from getting wrinkled. Be a good housekeeper and keep your closet floor clean so if something falls off a hanger, it doesn't need to be rewashed instantly.

And finally, invest in an inexpensive upright clothes steamer. I found mine for about $20 at Wal-Mart. It is easier and faster to steam the wrinkles out of your shirt than to iron it. It also takes up less space, requires no set up, and is ready to steam in under a minute. I keep mine in my closet, ready to go.

I hope these tips will help you make the best of what you have until you can afford the closet of your dreams!

I have been an avid blog reader for quite some time, and even though I have pared my blog down a fair bit with the relaunch to steal Martha Stewart's crown, I am quite the verbose blogger. You wouldn't really know that if you hadn't been reading me for a while. But, I have gotten the hang of it and have learned from my mistakes, which is evidenced by my greatly increased viewership.

I also peruse websites and blogs and tweets and flickrs (oh my!) all the time, always on the lookout for something entertaining to follow and keep bookmarked. I have an enormous bookmarked list of everything categorized every which way but by color... which might be next. I have gotten quite good at weeding out the crap.

So, I have compiled a list of things I love and loathe about places I have visited, and tips for the great beyond, in hopes that it helps you maintain readers. I can't promise it will bring you more, but it will certainly keep you from losing people.

1) ALWAYS include photos. I don't care if it is a picture of you getting a colonoscopy, don't be nothing but a solid column of words. Conversely, don't be a solid column of 20 photos either.

Nothing turns me off faster than monotony, and failing to break up your long rants on how much you hate taco salad without at least one photo of the taco offender (or a colonoscopy!), bores me to tears.

You don't have to be photoshop savvy, or even know how to take a non-blurry picture, but take the time to give visual breaks periodically to your reader. Photos are an excellent placeholder for those who are constantly distracted by other things. They don't have to even relate to what you are talking about, just make sure you explain peculiar photos. Remember, if you are bored reading your own writing while proofreading, imagine how bored your readers are.

Exceptions can be made. You don't necessarily have to have a photo if you are only alerting your readers to the fact you fell in the bathtub and cracked your head open, therefore you won't be blogging until you learn to stop bleeding. It isn't necessary.

2)Take the time to learn proper English, proper writing skills, and how to use a thesaurus. Oh, and typos are ok.

I stuck these together, because they all go hand in hand. Writing a blog allows for some creative license, since you are writing out the thoughts in your head as opposed to writing a proper novel. So, certain rules can be ignored.

This doesn't excuse you from completely destroying the English language.

I will discontinue reading anything where the writer has proven that they cannot conjugate verbs, spell relatively easy words, or can't use "your", "you're", "there", "their", and "they're" in the correct manner. It shows a lack of intelligence. If you aren't sure on something, look it up!

Expand your vocabulary as well. If you always think something is "awesome", it's time to broaden your horizons. There are numerous ways to say something is especially wonderful, or terrible, or whatever, without resorting to the same word. You might be surprised.

The one thing I do forgive is typos. Spell check doesn't catch everything, and it is easy to transpose letters when typing fast. Hell, my keyboard likes to ignore 10% of the letters that I type. I try to proofread, but somehow things still make it through. So don't sweat it. Just do your best to make sure it clean.

3) Stop being way too vague or way too technical.

Facebook and Twitter are the worst offenders when it comes to people being too vague and cryptic. That doesn't mean I don't see it on someone website/blog occasionally.

If something is so personal that you can only say "something really awful happened today" or "it was the best ever" without even promising to explain what it means at a later date, then don't say it at all.

It is rude because it makes us, as a reader, feel excluded. It is as if you are making an inside joke that we are the butt of, or deem us too inferior to possibly comprehend what is going on. I have been known to scour someone's known links in search for a clue as to what might be going on.

Also annoying: being way too thorough with an explanation. Thoroughness has it's place. If you are being instructional, or need someone to visualize something for a specific purpose, then by all means, add in the details.

But if you are detailing how you hacked off your finger, complete with measurements of how much bone is sticking out, or the exact color of the pus coming out of the incision, and you aren't trying to help someone in the same situation, you have over-shared. This also goes for people who are nerdy enough to think that I care about the technical explanation on how they managed to get in a car accident, complete with diagrams, and second by second time lines.

Unless you have a specific purpose in what you are trying to tell people, and it is helpful, keep it simple and understandable.

4) Don't overly self-promote, overly rant and rave, and don't be obsessive.

This is a big one for me. I have no qualms with people promoting their wares and tooting their own horn on occasion as part of their internet interaction. We can't make a name for ourself if we are in obscurity.

The problem begins when it becomes an obsession. I have had to stop following many people on Twitter because 99% of the time it is them self-promoting. I do not need to be notified every single time you sell a hat or list a vintage dress. If you do a general tweet 50 times in a 30 minute time period, you are annoying me, and preventing me from reading other people's tweets.

Don't devote your blog to how awesome you think you are. It is narcissistic. If you want to devote your blog to your craft, then by all means, cover your craft. Show me finished items, how you do what you do,and works in progress. I love to see that sort of thing. Just spare me the "I'm better than you" speech.

Also, be aware of ranting and raving. I will admit we all have our days we need to vent, but if you go on a 10,000 word blog rant on how much you hate Kanye West, I'm gonna stop reading. Simply put, you can have your opinion, but being long-windedly hateful for no constructive reason reminds me of grade school. Keep your unhappiness short and sweet, then move on.

5) Stay up to date, and remember to inject a bit of your life into what you write.

This is pivotal in a blog world. I don't just read a blog, I form a pseudo-relationship with the blog writer.

If you do not make a reasonable attempt to update your blog at least once every 2 weeks, then don't blog at all. Very often I find blogs that are interesting, but the person goes months without updating and is always apologizing for not blogging more.

I have a short blog memory. Unless you have specified that you will be out of town, or something of the like, if you stop regularly updating, I will stop following you.

This goes hand-in-hand with injecting your life in your blog. I end up captivated by a person's life when I read what they write. It doesn't require much to get me interested, but I want to know a real person is writing what I read. I have actually been brought to tears when someone I never met wrote that their dog died of cancer.

That is why it is so important that you stay updated in your blog/website/twitter/etc. If you aren't regular, people feel as if the friendship is fading away. They will feel like the jilted friend.

Hopefully, these 5 tips will help you fix some of the issues that may be keeping you from having a higher readership. As always, have a wonderful day, and remember to click my sponsors!

If you know me at all, you know I can find anything at a good price. I thrive on a quality bargains, and I make it my mission to find the best thing I possibly can for the lowest price possible. My house is full of great things I got for a great price. I plan on bringing you great deals whenever I can find them, so keep coming back to see what new things I have found for a great price.

First great deal?

This awesome bamboo tile rug from Pearl River. It measures 5 feet by 6 feet and is a great way to cover your floor on a budget. It is only available in the natural color, but it has so many possibilities.

Think about stenciling on it before you use it, just don't forget the polyurethane! Drape it over your dining room table over a bright tablecloth for a unique dinner presentation. You could also disassemble the rug and use the tiles for crafts, or make smaller rugs out of it. It would also make good jewelry, bags, place mats, etc. I can think of all sort of ways to use this.

Looking for some great pillows without breaking the bank?

Then try Stretch and Cover. They sell some amazing decorative throw pillow covers (and inserts, when they have them) for only $5. YES, FIVE DOLLARS! There are a bunch to choose from, and you can get some serious gems. They also have pillows with screen printed letters which are hot right now. Stretch and cover also makes some great slipcovers for sofas and chairs as well as dining room chairs, ottomans, and even folding chairs. Give the place a look!

Looking for some simple napkin rings? Then try these:

Fish's Eddy has these plain diner white (ceramic?)beauties for only $.71 apiece in their clearance section.

They are perfect as a simple finish to your table, or you could jazz them up with paints and flowers. They would also make a really nice wedding gift on a budget, since most people never think to buy them for themselves.

Just make sure you don't tell people how much you paid for them!

And last but not least:

These gorgeously shaped bamboo cutting boards available at Branch are so beautiful, I just want to touch them. The small one is $8, and the large one is $25, which is a very reasonable price for these shapely boards.

If you have never used a bamboo cutting board before, I suggest you make the switch. Not only is it a sustainable product, but it holds up very well to heavy use. Unlike regular wooden boards, they stay looking nice over the years. You don't get the splintering and cracking like you would normally see on a wood board. To maintain them, just use a bit of mineral oil and rub it into the grain from time to time.

I have 3 bamboo cutting boards myself and aside from the nicks in them, they look perfect. In fact, I have tossed out all my wooden kitchen implements and have replaced them with bamboo because it holds up so well to use. I have also noticed a sharp decrease in my husband giving me food poisoning since switching from wood to bamboo.

Coincidence? I think not.

Enjoy your weekend, and I hope to see you back here as I expand and revamp my website. And remember, click the ads so I can pay the bills!

I have fallen head over heels for Polyvore. If you haven't been there before, I suggest you take a minute to check it out. Polyvore is a great tool that allows you to assemble outfits and more into a pleasing vignette that you can share with others. What is wonderful about it is that you can search and shop from the site. I have discovered several store just by using the search term boxes. Take some time and mess around on the site. I promise you will love the concept.

I have been using Polyvore to help me assemble outfits for an upcoming vacation. On December 5th, Nathan and I will be going to Kauai, therefore I am looking for appropriately tropical outfits to wear. Here is my very first attempt:

Seriously!

I have been working hard on revamping House of Devign's blog site and you might have noticed some things have moved, changed or disappeared. Don't worry. Anything past a certain point this year has stayed up, and anything informational prior to that is saved for future revamping and use. I hate deleting 2 years worth of blogging, but so much of it is uninteresting unless you are my mom.

I have added a couple analytical programs to help me better understand what brings people to my website. But the programs are not helping me figure out what keywords are being inputted to take people elsewhere.

This is where you come in. What keywords do you use to search for things on the web that fit in with my concept? What is a common keyword you use? How hard is it to find what you are looking for? Do you still have things you are searching for that you can't find? Like what?

I wan't to use your input to help me shape my website to better fit what you need.

Don't be fooled, I have a ton of features planned, from gardening and realistic homekeeping to non-snooty interior design and quality shopping bargains, I just want to make sure I am not skipping oversomething.

Yes, I know you want me to make things still to sell, I get it, but I can't kick Martha Stewart off her throne only making things to sell. I need more substance!

So, take the time to tell me what feature niche I can fill that you are desperately searching for. Oh, and make sure you keep clicking the ads on the right side of the page so I can afford to advertise!

It is hard to believe that it has been over nine months since I started my "self-improvement journey" A year is coming up faster than I could have ever realized. And I am sincerely happy. I am often so busy on the weekends that I have to make difficult choices on who to go out with. And I look good in clothes again. I killed the muffin top!

I am also on an insane kick to get off the last few unsightly pounds because Nathan and I are going to Kauai in December. We are really excited to go because other than visiting family, or a weekend at San Francisco, we have never had a vacation. No honeymoon either.

It seems I am about to complete my goal.

Soo... what now? The hardest part about achieving your goal is not having a goal anymore. Well, I can't have that.

I have decided to set a new, loftier goal. I am not waiting until I complete my first goal either. I am gonna dive in now.

I have decided that I want to be the new Martha Stewart. You know, if Martha were a cool gal with colorful hair and no assistants to do the work for her. Oh and a husband... and a non-yuppie sense of style. Oh, and the most important thing... I like a bargain. I don't think Martha likes sales.

Why would I dare tread these waters? Because, I know I can do it. I get consistent comments from everyone the instant they walk into my house. From the color of my walls to all the DIY projects I have around. And those are just the things I implement! I got a million more where those came from.

Besides, I need a more entertaining income. I can sell things, sure, but I have such a knack for doing a multitde of different things all at once, and never doing them a couple times, with a few exceptions. It seriously is a hindrance for me to work like a factory recreating identical, or very similar items, and I think I have a great "marketplace" of ideas in my head to pass along for others to have inspiration.

This is where you guys come in. I need your help.

I need you to tell me what you want to see from me. I am accepting any and all ideas to make sure I am providing what people want to read and see. Pass me along to your friends (blog me!), and let them weigh in as well. The more minds, the better. I also need you to start clicking the ads on my blog. Your little clicks will help me get the money I need to advertise and get the ball rolling faster.

So, over the next couple of weeks, I will be overhauling House of Devign and restructuring COMPLETELY to better suit my readers needs. So, don't freak out if things get all weird, or disappear. I am looking to make things a ton more user-friendly.

Just remember, I need you to help me make my dream a reality. Click ads, tell your friends, blog me, tweet me. I am accepting every idea to help me kick off this grand scheme, and no idea is too absurd. Okay, there might be a few absurd ideas, just try to keep it clean!

I NEED YOU!

About a dozen websites later, I had more questions than answers, and I was severely confused. There was really no single place I looked that was straightforward to help me decide if I really wanted to try it. I needed to know what ingredients and materials I needed, and what could be skipped.

I finally had to trudge down to Barnes & Noble and start paging through every book they had until I found a book that was easy to understand and gave me the important information I needed. I walked out with The Everything Soapmaking Book since it was the most informative book there and answered the questions I had. I recommend you buy it as well if you intend to go crazy making the bubbly stuff.

Yesterday, I spent the day making a batch of hot process soap and documenting it with pictures so I could finally give people a complete picture of the difficulty and involvement. This post will be long, but hopefully, it will be what you need to answer the questions you probably have about the process.

----------------------

The base recipe I am using will make a smallish batch of soap and is as follows:

567 g Olive Oil (or vegetable oil)

340 g Coconut Oil

340 g Purified Water

127.5 g Lye (Na-OH or Sodium Hydroxide)

2 Tbsp. Castor Oil

On top of those ingredients you also need:

Crock pot with removable liner

Hand blender (you can find them for $10 at Wal-mart, and is a necessity)

1-2 wooden spoons

glass candy thermometer

PH papers ( a roll of paper is better than the sticks)

small glass bowl and a couple cheap plastic bowls

cheap electronic scale

rubber gloves, simple face mask, eye gear

soap molds ( you might need a knife too if you use a mold like mine)

any soap fragrance/color/additive you like

paper towels

You might have to go to several places on the internet to find what you need. The good news is that by using the internet, you can find great deals on things and a much wider selection. It will also help you imagine more unique soaps.

You also might have some issues buying Sodium Hydroxide, as it is a toxic controlled substance (it is also used to make bombs). You can buy it locally for the best price. Na-OH is most commonly used as drain cleaner. I found mine at Lowe's in a big container in the drain cleaner section. You will have to read the label to make sure it is 100% Sodium Hydroxide crystals without any other additives. You can see the red and yellow bottle in the above photo for reference if you are having trouble finding it.

First things first. ONCE YOU USE SOMETHING FOR SOAP-MAKING, IT IS NO LONGER SAFE FOR FOOD. Keep this in mind when you are shopping. Everything I buy for soap-making is cheap enough that I won't have to spend more than 15 bucks to replace it, and it has it's own location for storage in my pantry so I do not confuse it for food-safe.

If you have bought a scale and it does not measure in grams, remember to convert the recipe to ounces or whatever first.

Place a plastic bowl on your scale, tare it to 0 and measure out your coconut oil and olive oil (separately) and dump it in to your crock pot. Turn the pot on to high. Don't forget your castor oil!

While you can make soap without coconut oil, it is preferable if you want a bubbly soap, otherwise it is flat.

You can leave it to melt on it's own, but it will go a bit faster if you use your stick blender to break it up. We are trying to get the temperature up to above 125 degrees, so put the lid on it!

While we are waiting, use your small glass bowl on the scale and measure out the purified water (remember to tare!). You should have a couple inches from the water to the lip of the bowl for safety. Try to do all this as close to the crock pot as possible to minimize possible splashing.

Now, you need to put on your safety gear. Gloves, mask, and eye gear. Don't skip anything. You can wear a full apron for added protection, but it isn't as necessary.

Open your sodium hydroxide jar. If it has become chunky, put the lid back on and shake it up. KEEP YOUR GEAR ON. Lye is nasty and can

really ruin your day, so follow safety before everything else.

Use a clean, VERY DRY plastic bowl on your scale and measure out the Sodium Hydroxide. To make sure there are no mistakes, I reserve a specific bowl for the dry crystals to make sure there are no incidents. If there are any chunks, break them up with a wooden spoon.

Now, carefully pour the Sodium Hydroxide into the glass bowl with the water while using the wooden spoon to slowly stir. You are aiding a very hot chemical reaction so keep stirring and don't splash while you add it. Once every crystal is dissolved, you can stop stirring.

You can remove your gear at this point, just don't stick your face over the bowl. Keep your eye glasses available though, you'll probably want them again shortly.

At this point, I suggest rinsing out/washing any used bowls, and your wooden spoon, since you will be waiting. I also suggest doing a quick counter clean-up to prevent any cross contamination.

Get your candy thermometer out and check the temperature of both the crock pot and bowl of lye water. You can set your paper towels out at this point and rest the thermometer on them. Just remember not to touch the wet end!

The goal is to get the lye to drop to a reasonable temperature while getting the oil temp raised. At about 122- 125 degrees is where we want both containers to end up. We want them as close as possible in temperature before we combine them. This is especially important if in the future you decide to use milk in your soaps as you don't want to burn the milk.

When the temperatures match, put your glasses back on (and gloves if you are afraid you'll splash), and get your stick blender going in the crock pot.

The oils should be nice and clear. Slowly add the lye mixture while you blend, making sure not to break the surface with the blender. As you mix, the oils will become opaque. This what happens when you bring soap to "trace". You CAN do this with a wooden spoon, but it takes a lot of stirring and time. The stick blender makes trace happen instantly.

Lower the crock pot temperature to low, put the lid on, and clean up anything dirty (except the stick blender, just rest that on a paper towel for the duration).

After about 10 minutes, I open the lid on the crock pot and start to add fragrance and color. This is where having experience helps.

When you buy fragrance or color, pay attention to what the manufacturer says about it. In this case, I am making chocolate oatmeal. The chocolate fragrance I am using turns the soap a chartreuse-ish hue. To offset the color change, I add unsweetened cocoa powder to it instead of a soap coloring. I also add the cocoa powder early on instead of later to keep it from looking grainy or "glisteny". I want it to be a solid chocolate brown.

I add a little fragrance now, to let it cook in and will add more at the end. Some fragrances break down or smell funny if you add it early on so watch out. It comes down to preference and manufacturer suggestion how you add the fun stuff, but you will learn as you go. If you are uncertain, just wait til the end. Just remember to keep the lid on!

Your soap will go through a few stages. It will first be oily with tiny solid chunks, but as it starts to "boil" will start to solidify. From time to time, stick your blender in and even it out.

It is important to keep an eye on it, as it can overflow. This is the reason we are starting with a smaller batch, soap overflow is not so fun to clean up.

We are ideally cooking the soap for 3 hours, as we are trying to attain saponification. You can click that link to see the definition. We are basically forcing another chemical reaction where we turn caustic soap into safe soap.

This is where the pH papers come in handy.

I can go through a lot of pH paper so having a roll like this one is beneficial and cost effective.

We are looking to get the pH of the soap mixture to an 8. After an hour and a half, I start testing the the soap.

First, use the stick blender to even out the soap. After putting the lid back on, tear of a small piece of pH paper and set it by the sink. Take a bit of cooled soap off the blender and wet it under the faucet while creating a lather. At this point the soap is safe to handle without gloves, so don't worry. Use some of the bubbles to wet the pH paper. Compare it to the chart to see where you are in the cooking process. Test every 30 minutes.

Once it reaches 8, you have usable soap! You can continue to cook it if you like. It basically makes the soap harder the longer you cook it. It also makes it harder to mold, so keep that in mind.

Once your soap meets your desired end result, move your temperature to warm. If you turn it straight to off, it can harden up really fast.

Add in your remaining color (this is a great time to make swirls of color), fragrance, and any other additives you want to stay whole.

Make sure you add your fragrance first, then your color, and finally the additive. I used more chocolate fragrance, and then oatmeal in my soap.

You could also add sugar, ground rice, poppy seeds, or anything else to add texture or decoration. Just fold evenly with a wooden spoon, and don't go overboard. Also, add a small bit at a time. Sometimes the soap doesn't latch on to the solid things you put in and can end up a crumbly mess.

Now, grab your mold!

My mold is a basic 8 bar mold of about 3.5 ounces per bar. I have 2 of these, as well as a mold that has 4 round and oval bars in it. I only use the round mold when I have more than what fits in the 8 bar, but not enough to fill the second 8 bar mold. I ALWAYS keep all my available molds on hand, because I never know just how much I really have, especially if you change up ingredients.

Use your wooden spoon to spread a thin layer on the bottom and then evenly fill up the mold. Smack the bottom on the counter to even it out to release any air bubbles, just don't smack too hard. The soap is still hot!

You will notice that the soap is not thin and smooth, like traditional cold-process soaps, it is a bit chunkier. You most likely wont end up with a smooth back, but it will still make a nice clean mold, provided you don't let it cool too much beforehand.

Now, let it set until it cools down before you even attempt to free it. If it doesn't seem to un-mold easily, you can stick it in the freezer. I have to do this with my plastic molds. The softer you allow the soap to be the harder it will be to un-mold and can be a bit sticky, so keep that in mind when choosing decorative molds. You might not get as pretty an end result as you hope.

Once it is un-molded, clean up your soap. Trim any weird ends, cut it to shape, etc. I have to cut mine into the individual bars and clean up some stray ends.

Homemade soap is not the same as commercial soap so it does not have the same shelf longevity, and once you use it, you will notice the difference. BUT, this also means you have to use your soap faster. So if you are only making it for your personal use, don't make more than you think you can use in 6 months. Give away or sell the excess. Just make sure to tell whoever you give it to that they need to use it up within 6 months.

Also, watch how you store your soap. I store mine in my pantry on the shelf with my soaping supplies, stacked in 3's, wrapped only in air. If you choose to store yours differently, remember, never wrap it in plastic, it will destroy the soap. Use tissue paper, regular paper, or box it, and keep it out of the sunlight til you need it.

And, that is it. I hope this is helpful enough to give you a real hands-on example of making soap. If you have any questions, please let me know. I am bound to have forgotten something!
