Block Party in Dixie

This morning we partnered with BREC and held a Block Party in Dixie. This was the first block party under our Adopt-A-Block program and it was a huge success.

We had nail polish stations, face painting and inflatables for the kids, and a 3 on 3 basketball tournament ran by two of our Epic-BRDC Youth Program leaders, Eric and Derric Wright. We also had the Healing Hands Medical team providing medical screenings to children and adults and some of Mr. Randy’s and Mr. Joe’s amazing burgers.

Over the last month, Terry Franks and the Adopt-A-Block team had started spending time and building relationships with the people of the Dixie area and they were told that there are two sides of Dixie and the two sides don’t hang out or even communicate with each other. And some people said that they wouldn’t come to the block party because it was on the other side of Mohican Street.

That was when Terry knew that God had sent them not only to this area but he had also sent them to the exact street that was the barrier between some of God’s precious children.

As the party was ending, One man told us, “Because of this block party that you held today, people that haven’t seen each other in years or communicated, came together! It felt so good to see my friends again!”

Great story from No Place Homeless Outreach-Movie Night

From Terry Franks and Tom Waller:

Tonight at church we got the opportunity to do something really cool. We had a homeless movie night hosted by our CFC team, our Dreamcenter team, NoPlace team and the HUB. We hung a homemade screen outside, pulled out all the couches and ate red beans and rice while watching “courageous”. It reminded me of a family movie night from when I was young especially when the kettle corn came out. It was awesome to see how the everyone enjoyed it like family!
At the end of the movie, pastor Craig closed the night in prayer and everyone began there journey back to the bridges they may sleep under, or the long walk back to their tent by the levee. One guy stayed behind, his name was Mr. Sherman. Mr. Sherman stood about 6’3 and weighed over 260; it’s easy to say he was a big ol boy. He began to tell Pastor Craig and I that he was hooked to crack and had been homeless for 3 weeks. He said, “I know I need God in my life, just don’t know how to do it.” Right there in that little building on Roselawn, we were able to pray with Mr. Sherman, and with tears rolling down his eyes, he accepted Jesus in his heart. In the upcoming days, we hope to help him get off the streets and start pointing his life in the right direction. But tonight, God showed me that if the homeless movie night was for no one else, TONIGHT was for Mr. Sherman! Our God is so awesome.

Lessons Learned from My Homeless Friend Brad

Mrs. Bernie Diez, one of our amazing volunteers, sent me this story…

Brad lives in a patch of woods between the levee and the Mississippi River in downtown Baton Rouge. I met him about a year ago through the No Place Outreach, which is HPC’s ministry that feeds the homeless. We serve breakfast every Wednesday at 7am at 450 Roselawn Ave. Sometimes Brad comes to the breakfast on his bike. After breakfast is done we load up food and take it to the places around down town where we know the homeless live. We always go to the Levee, where a lot of our homeless friends know to meet us for breakfast.

Last Spring when the BR Dream Center partnered with BREC to have an Easter Egg hunt at Howell Park, Brad volunteered to help. He told me he would and just like he said, he showed up and made snow cones for the kids. He has helped on other outreaches too. I’ve come to know that if he says he will help us, you can bet he will unless something happens to his bike.

Integrity.

A couple of months ago I saw him at the breakfast and told him about the free dental clinic we have at the DC and asked if he needed any teeth pulled (that is the only service they provide). He said he had several that needed to come out so I asked him if he could make it the following Saturday. His answer, I’ll be there. Then he asked me if I thought someone there could help him fix his bike, it was broken. I asked how would he get the DC if his bike was broken, he said he would walk. Didn’t know how far, but I knew it was a long walk! I questioned him to make sure he would be able to make it, he assured me he would be there. I tried to figure out a way give him a ride, but it didn’t work out.

That Saturday morning we opened the doors of the Dental Clinic at 7:00am. He told me he wouldn’t be there too early, but maybe around 8. I kept an eye out for him and around 8:15 he came strolling in. His shirt was soaking wet and he was smiling! I checked Google maps and turns out Brad walked over 5 miles that day.

Perseverance.

We got him a dry shirt and something to drink. He saw the dentist and he had 3 teeth pulled. At the same time the dental clinic is going on, there’s a huge drive-thru outreach going on in the parking lot. Brad wanted to go help with that outreach. I told him he shouldn’t get over-heated maybe he should sit a while. He said he had already told someone he was going to help, so outside he went.

Commitment.

Brad stayed helping clean up, until almost everyone else was gone.

During the week I asked Pastor Derek Smith if someone could fix his bike. Since they didn’t have the parts to fix it, they decided to give him a new bike that someone had donated! It was a very nice & sturdy bike. He was so excited and thankful he went outside right away to try it out!

Through outreaches God blesses people through us, but He can also teach us valuable lessons if we listen. I learned integrity, perseverance & commitment from Brad that day. I am so blessed to be a part of a church that uses their resources to reach the world one person at a time! Thank you, God!
