High-performing does not really ever gets related to “netbook” term generally but with the power of new dual core AMD E350 processor, HP have managed to take their HP mini line up to next level.

Whats Awesome ?

- Little bigger screen 11.6″

- High performer AMD Dual core E350 Processor

- Portable, Sleek and Sturdy design

- Great Keyboard

- Very different design than traditional Netbooks.

What is not so Good ?

- Bad screen

- Highest price in netbooks

Traditionally, netbooks were powered with Intel Atom processor & then came the dual core version of it. But belive it or not they were just good for office work, net users & media lovers. These processors came with shared graphics recently named GMA 3150, which was used for casual media.

Now we have this new competitor to break traditional Atom lineup & it is of course form AMD – Dual core E350. This new processor actually comes with in built graphics core HD 6310 & its performace is far betetr than Atom’s.

HP Pavilion DM1Z Netbook comes with the 11.6 inch of screen which is kind of in between size of 10.2″ & 13.3 .” This makes HP paviallion special as its not to large & easy to carry around in any kind of backpack.

DM1Z have battery life of 9 hours which is fairly as good as any high performer netbook & 11.6″ of size makes keyboard of full size, so no hassle in changing your traditional keyboard size habits.

CPU performance of the E350 processor might be same to Intel Atom, So the power consumption But its way to better in Graphics & Video performance. It also plays HD videos like 1080p HD graphics with high bit rates flawlessly & did not even have to compromize the battery at all.

Talking about bad things we found in HP Pavilion DM1Z Netbook was the Bad screen with even worse viewing angles. Second thing is its price – which will make many think over resizing their budget. Recently we have bought Samsung’s n148 Dual core atom CPU & LED display which costs us only Rs.14,500 ($300) where is DM1Z costs $200 extra.

But still this netbook is a great performer at its price & we would have loved it with HD screen or something. We will give this netbook 8.5/10 overall.

Price of HP Pavillion DM1Z in India : Rs. 26,500 International price: Around $500

Internet Connectivity is now the basic need of every geek in todays fast growing tech freaky world.

Many a times it is not possible to carry our internet every where we go or say sometimes there is some network problem with our mobile internet or any other internet we use everywhere on the go.

Connectify is a small software which converts you Netbooks Wi-Fi card into a Wi-Fi Access Point, making it searchable in your Wi-Fi Range to others and connecting to you. It shares the internet on your netbook in your surrounding wi-fi area. You can use this shared internet with any of your other devices like Laptop, Mobile via Wi-Fi.

Connectify - Laptop Wi-Fi Hotspot

How to Use Connectify to make Netbook Wi-Fi Hotspot :

Step 1 :

Download and install Connectify in your PC.

Step 2 :

Make sure that you Netbook’s Wi-Fi is turned on.

Step 3 :

Start the Easy Setup Wizard inside Connectify.

Step 4 :

You can skip the welcome screen by clicking next, now it will ask you to choose your Wi-Fi Device, don’t change it, let is be default and continue configuring.

Step 5 :

Now it will ask for a Network Name. Fill the Name i.e the name of your Wi-Fi Access Point, if anyone searches then they can see this name in their Wi-Fi Device to connect to you. Its your SSID. Fill in whatever you like to, say ‘No Networks Available’ etc.

Step 6 :

Next will ask you to choose your Hotspot Mode. Choose Access Point as the default mode there.

Step 7 :

It will be asking you for a password. Insert a password which on sharing with other will let them connect you to your netbooks wi-fi hotspot.

Step 8 :

In the Shared Connection Area, Choose the connection which you by default use on your netbook to get online or the one you are using at that instance.

Step 9 :

After Hitting Next, your configuration is all over and now you can Start your Netbooks Wi-Fi Hotspot by Selecting “Start Hotspot after Closing Wizard” and clicking finish.

Step 10 :

Enjoy your Wi-Fi Access Point and share your Netbooks Internet anywhere by your Netbooks Wi-Fi Hotspot. If anything works wrong, check weather your Wi-Fi Device is turned on or else try configuring the Wizard again.

As the netbook doesn’t come with a cd/dvd drive we have to use USB to get our things done.

There are many OS around the world specially designed for a netbook.

Here, i am with a small tutorial for everyone on how to install Ubuntu netbook edition on a netbook.

Tools needed for the installation are :

UNetbootin for Ubuntu : You can download it here.

Ubuntu Netbook Edition : You can download it here.

USB Mass Storage Device of storage capacity up-to 1 GB.

Netbook with Ubuntu Netbook Edition

How to Install Ubuntu Netbook Edition :

Step 1 :

Download and install ‘Unetbootin for Ubuntu’, also download the .iso image of ‘Ubuntu Netbook Edition’.

Step 2 :

Run ‘Unetbootin’ and select the ‘Diskimage’ option. In this option ‘browse’ for the downloaded .iso Image of ‘Ubuntu Netbook Edition.’

Step 3 :

Below Select the ‘type’ as ‘USB Drive’, and in the ‘drive’ option select the drive letter of your ‘USB Mass Storage Device.’ Now Click on ‘OK.’

Step 4 :

Now it will make the pendrive bootable and also copy and extract all the files from the .iso image. After its done just restart you netbook and boot it from the USB Mass Storage Device.

Thats it, its all done. You just made a USB Bootable for installing Ubuntu Netbook Edition on to you netbook.

You can boot it and use the Live CD of it or you can install it on another drive of your netbook. Also, if you want you can install it inside your windows without loosing your windows partition and with the ability to remove it later if you want.

How to Install Ubuntu Netbook Edition inside Windows :

It very much simple guys. After your step 4 from the above mentioned procedure is over, don’t restart it. Just hit ‘Exit’ and remove you USB Drive. Now plug it again and play the ‘autorun’. As soon as the autorun start it will give you and option to install it inside your windows. Just feed in the details as per your requirement and install it. It may take around 15 mins for installation. After the installation is complete restart your netbook and at the boot menu you will get an option to boot into Ubuntu. When Ubuntu boots it will ask you for username and a password, if you have already choosen your username and password at the time of installation, put it in there or just insert username as ‘root’ and password as ‘root’.

At any time if you want to uninstall it just goto ‘Programs and Features’ menu in your control panel and remove it. After your next reboot your system will be cleaned and all your ubuntu files will be removed.

Hope the guide on How to install Ubuntu Netbook edition on Netbook helped you.

Guys here I come with a very small but very effective post.

This is a solution to many of your netbooks problem.

At times it may happen to you that your recovery drive gets corrupted, or say you accidently delete your recovery drive, you are unable to boot to your recovery manager, your windows is all very much corrupted and its not working, also on top of that you have not backed up your recovery drive and plus you don’t have a USB CD/DVD drive to perform this kinda work.

And the very much worrying thing to you is that you don’t wanna use any pirated version of win7 as you have got your registered copy of your win7.

So, here is the UNTOUCHED VERSION of win7 Starter Edition for you to download and use it with your netbook. Install it, get the key from the bottom sticker of your netbook, insert in this installation and you are all done. I will be posting on how to use this image and how to do the installation and bypass your OEM Registration very soon on the blog. Till then it is very much simple and you can do it yourself with not much knowledge about installation of windows.

If you have bought a new netbook and it is loaded with many stuffs provided for free by your OEM, then here is the way to erase all the data there and customise it your way.

Normally, all the netbooks do not come with a CD/DVD Drive. It comes with a Win 7 Starter Edition, which have a lots of limitation. Also, the netbook comes with a Recovery Drive in case you lost all your Windows due to some Virus attacks or any software problem.

If it happens that you corrupt your recovery drive, or you accidently delete your recovery drive, or say you wanna customise your netbook the way you want, it is not possible for you to part the hard drive using Win 7 Starter Edition due to its limitation and you wanna use any other Windows or you want to part it to use Windows and Linux, also at the same time you want to get rid of the recovery drive and you wanna backup your own customised thing, here is it how to customise your netbook.

All you need for it is UBCD long form as Ultimate Boot CD, and you can get it here.

Step By Step Instruction :

1 – Backup all your important data, drivers and also the very much important RECOVERY DRIVE to external removable storage media.

2 – Make a USB bootable of UBCD and reboot.

3 – Choose to boot from your bootable pendrive from the system bias.

4 – After you boot into UBCD goto the hard drive partition tools.

5 – Select the tool you are compatible with and delete all the drives including the Recovery Drive from your netbook.

6 – Now goto the hard drive wiping tools and wipe your hard drive.

7 – After deleting partitions and wiping is done, now your hard drive is ready to set for new partition table.

8 – Now again goto hard drive partiton tools and part your hard drives as per your need.

9 – Install Windows 7 OS, Whatever Edition you want to on your netbook using the USB Bootable Win 7 Media.

10 – After the completion of installation, install all the specific drivers, softwares and whatever you wolud like to backup for the one click recovery and your own customisation.

11 – When all you software installing is done, goto control panel, then backup and restore and select create system image.

12 – Choose the place you want to store your system image, i would personally recomend you to store it on the other drive of your netbook which you have just created.

13 – Creating your system image may take some time depending on the hardware of your netbook and its the last step of your customisation.

Now, Whenever you feel like to format your windows, or you think that the netbook is acting kinda weired or say its working slow or any of the reasons you just have to press F8 at the time of your boot, choose restore your PC, then choose using system image and you will get your fresh installation done along with all the drivers, softwares, and your customisation without the need of sitting in front of it and wasting time doing it all again.

Note :

1 – You should first of all backup your Recovery Drive to the safest place ever, so that you can get your factory setted netbook later if you wish to sale it.

2 – Recovery Drive can be backed up only once in some netbooks, so always be careful.

3 – Before deleteing all the drives and windows, make the bootable of UBCD and Win 7 and check it if it runs and then do the further processing.

4 – Wiping the drive may require more than 5 hours, so don,t worry about it, just give time, also you can check you hard drive after its wiped for bad sectore which may again require a couple of hours.

5 – Never Deleted the system image created, or else you again have to do a fresh installation.

6 – If you do not have any other Win 7 Version Registered, you can use the product key of Win 7 Starter Edition came along with your netbook with the help of making Untouched Win 7 Starter Edition USB Bootable and istalling it, as we gotta be ethical and won’t support Piracy.

7 – The process may require a day and is recommended for persons with proper knowledge for it.

Disclaimer : If you hook up with your netbook trying this out, I am not responsible for it, but i am always availabe for any technical help @ zjrathodji@gmail.com do reach me if you get stucked or for any other related quries.

Hope, you guys out there using netbook may like this idea and may use it, I am using it and I have tested all the above things, everything works fine and it give my netbook customisation as the way I want.

Here is another review of the older HP Mini Netbooks still available in the market till date. Say, its a re-review, hardly matters.

This Mini comes with the Intel Atom processor, 250 Gega of storage, 1 GB of Memory Stick, have mobile broadband and an anti-glare HP WSVGA display. All the other specs are below and reviewed by us.

Specification in Detail :

Intel Atom N455 1.66 GHz Processor with 2 Threads

1 GB DDR2 RAM

250 GB 5400 RPM HDD

6 Cell Li-ion Battery

10.1 in diagonal LED-backlit WSVGA widescreen display with 1024 x 600 resolution and Anti-Glare

Wi-Fi

Bluetooth

Card Reader 5 in 1

3 USB Ports

1 Ethernet Port

VGA Display Output

Headphone or say Audio Output

Microphone Inbuilt and Input Slot

3G Support

Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150

Web Cam

Windows XP Home

Screen :

The screen of Mini 110 is not HD and have a mere small resolution of 1024 *600, this limits the display usage of the netbook, the reading sucks. It cannot be upgraded to HD Display as no screen up gradation options are provided by HP. It is not capable of playing HD 720p Videos well, but it has an Intel 3150 Integrated Graphic Card which helps in playing 480p HD Videos farely on this kinda screen. It is Anti-Glare Like all the netbooks available right now.

Processor :

It comes with a Intel Atom N455 1.66 Ghz processor, which have two threads and give a bare dual core feel, as the RAM is very much low of only 1 gega and is not up gradable. Upgrade options for the processor are available and it can be upgraded to N475 1.83 Ghz processor but is of no use as you won’t be having RAM and Screen upgradation. The processor works quite well for all the office work and some hand on music to play on the go. Can manage upto 480p of HD Video Playback without any hangs.

Wi-Fi Performance :

The wi-fi works pretty well. It is capable of browsing your internet without any flaws and to download your digital data to your hard disk drive. The only problem with the Wi-Fi performance of this netbook is that it takes up lots of battery usage and lowers down the battery performance. Mobile Broadband works quite well.

Keyboard and Touchpad :

Like all the other netbooks in the market it has the same 93% full keyboard and a quite well working touchpad. They are very sensitive and comfortable. The touchpad is a bit small and also the keyboard have some complexion in using different combination of keys. To be fully comfortable with the usage of the keyboard and the touchpad you have to practice working on it for say a week or more.

Battery Performance :

It comes with two battery options, one is the 3 cell battery and other is the 6 cell battery. The 6 cell battery netbook is over sized where as the 3 cell battery netbook is of standard size.

The battery performance is not very good enough for the netbook. The 6 cell battery gives around 5-6 hours of battery backup where as the 3 cell battery gives almost half the battery performance as compared to 6 cell battery.

Using Wi-Fi sucks out a lot of battery and lowers down the battery performance so its a total waste buying a 3 cell battery with this netbook and a 6 cell battery backup over sizes the product. There are issues with the battery of the Mini 110.

Usability :

The netbooks have a very old config and many less upgrade options available. Also, doesn’t support a lot of working rather than the office work. Its good for the use in a small office for say official work when your office is out of power supply or for say in a small meeting for some deals with your clients. Not for the ones looking out for some entertainment in a netbook and also to carry along with them place to place as the battery won’t support it.

Drawbacks :

Hard Disk Drive cannot be upgraded for more than 250 Gega’s of storage. RAM or say the memory module is only 1 GB, that too DDR2 and cannot be upgraded. The screen is WSVGA with 1200*600 Resolution and cannot be Upgraded. Doesn’t have battery performance and a 6 cell battery gives an over sized looks. It does not have a GPS option as well. The wi-fi performance sucks out all the battery performance and the the product is not capable for any heavy usage other than playing around with word and text files. Also, HD videos and mid-range games are also not supported.

Recomendation :

It’s better not to buy this Netbook as its of no use. There is not a single useful upgrade option available for it where as the Mini’s out now are capable of everything from heavy loaded multitasking environment to Playing 720p HD Videos Flawlessly. Also, they have better battery performance, wi-fi performance and damn cool looks unlike Mini 110. They now have a GPS option available for the new Mini’and the new Mini’s are fully customizable and upgradeable and comes with Genuine Win 7 Starter. All this at very fare cost difference to fit your pocket and your bank account balance. For more info have a look at Mini 210 HD or Mini 210-2010 just by clicking the links below.

Price :

$ 370 and for less or around 17,ooo INR.

HP have a habit of launching new netbooks and here is the one out of them. Though its a bit old from now but it has a touch display and still available in the market.

It comes with Intel Atom N450 processor, options with HD and regular WSVGA display, options to choose between Hard Disk Drive and Solid State Drive. You can also choose between the different operating systems that comes along with your netbook.

Specification in Detail :

Intel Atom N450 1.66 GHz Processor with 2 Threads

2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 RAM

160 GB 7200 RPM HDD

6 Cell Li-ion Battery

10.1 in diagonal LED-backlit WSVGA widescreen display with 1024 x 600 resolution.

Wi-Fi

Bluetooth

Card Reader 5 in 1

3 USB Ports

1 Ethernet Port

VGA Display Output

Headphone or say Audio Output

Microphone Inbuilt and Input Slot

3G Support

GPS (Optional)

Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150

Web Cam

Windows XP Home, SUSE Linux Enterprise 11

Touch Screen Support

Screen :

The screen of the HP Mini 5102 c0mes with two option, regular VGA screen and HD screen. Both of them are touch supported, it is a capacitive touch screen and works only under the Windows 7 environment. HP is working with other OS Manufacturers to get the touch support for their OS soon. You get a standard 1024*600 display resolution in VGA screen and 1366*768 display resolution if you to choose to have and HD upgrade. The screen decodes 1080p if its HD and can play 480p videos normally. You get the Broadcoms HD Video card when you upgrade it for HD support and it will cost some extra bucks.

Processor :

It comes with an Intel Atom Processor. You can choose between the processor of your types. There are mainly two options available. The Intel Atom N450 and the Intel Atom N470. The one reviewed here is an Intel Atom N450 1.66 GHz processor, with two threads, it has a 512 Kb of L2 cache memory and 667 of bus speed. If you upgrade your mini with the Broadcoms HD Video Graphic Adapter then the processor is capable of decoding 1080p HD videos very smoothly and with out any heavy load, but your battery performance gets lowered.

Wi-Fi Performance :

The Wi-Fi works pretty well in this netbook. You can surf upto 8 tabs at a time while using google chrome browser and a normal wi-fi connection. The battery works for around 5-6 hours while you use wi-fi to its fullest. Also, a dedicated on/off switch for your wireless connections is provided in this Mini for the ease of your use.

Keyboard and Touchpad :

Like all the other Mini’s this one also have a 95 % full size keyboard. It is Chick let type and is very comfortable to use. All the buttons on the keyboard are very nicely separated from each other, but they don’t have a back light for working in the dark. The touchpad is very small like all the other netbooks. It have two different buttons viz. left mouse click and right mouse click on the touchpad. It works very fine using the double touch, and zooming in and out the pictures using both your finger on the touchpad.

Battery Performance :

The battery performance is quite well of this netbook, it took almost 9 hours 44 mis to run down the battery with normal use. It runs for around 8.5 hours if used heavily. It has a 6 cell battery which gets charged quickly and is very durable. Battery performance is the point where it is different from other Mini’s. Also, you can get an extra 6 cell battery from HP at the time of buying if you will to pay out some extra bucks and if you require one.

Usability :

For business traveler’s and the ones who opt for high performing battery life. Also, who want a hand on for a touch screen display.

Colors :

Red, Black and Blue are the three officially available colors. Also you can get Red Black and Blue Black color combination by specially ordering it.

Upgrade Options :

You can upgrade you processor to N470 1.83 GHz, Screen to HD Resolution of 1366*768 with Broadcoms HD Video Graphic Adapter, Hard Disk Drives upto 320GB and upto 80 GB and 120 GB Solid State Drives. Also to GPS if you want as 3G is already available. Plus you can Upgrade the OS to Win 7 Home or Win Premium. All this by spending extra bucks at the HP Store.

Price :

For around $399 and 24,000 INR.

HP Mini is 5101 is though an old netbook by HP but is still available in the market and i would like to give a small review on it when i saw it somewhere in the market and used it for about 10 mins.

It comes with an old Intel Atom N280 series processor, 1 GB SD RAM, 160 GB Hard Disk Drive, Intel Graphics card onboard, Mobile Intel 945 Chipset, and all the other features on an netbook.

Specification in Detail :

Intel Atom N270 1.66 GHz Processor with 2 Threads

1 GB 667 MHz SDRAM

160 GB 7200 RPM HDD

6 Cell Li-ion Battery

10.1 in diagonal LED-backlit WSVGA widescreen display with 1024 x 600 resolution.

Wi-Fi

Bluetooth

Card Reader 5 in 1

3 USB Ports

1 Ethernet Port

VGA Display Output

Headphone or say Audio Output

Microphone Inbuilt and Input Slot

3G Support

Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950

Web Cam

Windows XP Home, SUSE Linux Enterprise 11/Free DOS

Screen :

It has a LED screen which is WSVGA. Its resolution is 1024*600. It gives good colors and picture clarity as of the Netbooks screens and the XP operating system. The fonts are very clearly readable and the icons are also microscopic. It takes around 1-2 min to start a 720p HD video on it and it runs fine after sometime. You can also upgrade the screen to HD LED Screen of 1366*768 16:9 resolution at an extra cost of $25.

Processor :

It has an old Intel Atom N280 1.66 Ghz processor. The processor have two threads and have 512 Kb L3 Cache memory. Its clock speed is slower at 533 Mhz as compared to the new processors available in the market now. It is not capable of playing HD videos finely without the support of HD Screen.

Wi-Fi Performance :

It comes with the Broadcom Wireless Network card which gives data rates of between 300 Mbps-400 Mbps, these are normal obtained data rates in a wireless connection, also it is AES supported.

Keyboard and Touchpad :

It has a 95 % full keyboard as of the previous old netbooks in the market from HP. The keyboard have two buttons at the top for Power and Quick Launch. The keyboard have flat keys. Typing on this keyboard is very comfortable. The touchpad have two mouse buttons which are firm and rubbery. The touchpad is old fashioned and is small and not comfortable.

Battery Performance :

It comes with a 6 cell battery. As per HP it gives battery life of say 9 hours. But if you run continuous videos on it then it gets down by say 2 hours and you get only 7 hours battery life. When the system is off the battery gets charged at a faster rate of 90% in 90 minutes. Be aware before buying the product as it comes in two configuration of 4 cell and a 6 cell battery.

Usability :

This netbook is an old netbook in market now but will be still usable for the business tycoons who don’t have any heavy work other than word, internet and mails. Also, for guys in college and just want a gadget for reading ebooks, browsing and some fun watching videos.

Drawbacks and Suggestion :

It is still available in the market but is an old netbook. The RAM is upgradeable to 2 GB, hard disk drive to 250 GB and 320 GB, screen up-gradation options are also available for HD. Comes with 4 cell battery so we have to be aware of the fact while buying it. Have Windows XP operating system rather than the Win 7 shipped with the new ones. So, its better you don’t opt to choose and buy this netbook and go for the new ones with a little higher budget like the HP Mini 210 Series and HP Mini 311 netbooks which are reviewed and their review and specification links are provided below.

Price :

Around $ 35 and for around Rs 16,000 in India.
