It bears a stamp of foresight from the author, VS Naipaul. That one paragraph in the second chapter of the book titled, "The Middle Passage", Naipaul mentions about how critical cricket proved to be for Trinidad - an island that was unique in its demeanor and attitude towards life. And then comes a long-term view of West Indian cricket, which has puzzled all of us through the last one decade -

Cricket has always been more than a game in Trinidad. In a society which demanded no skills and offered no rewards to merit, cricket was the only activity which permitted a man to grow to his full stature and to be measured against international standards. Alone on a field, beyond obscuring intrigue, the cricketer's true worth could be seen by all. His race, education, wealth did not matter. We had no scientists, engineers, explorers, soldiers or poets. The cricketer was our only hero-figure. And that is why cricket is played in the West Indies with such panache; that is why for a long time to come, the West Indians will not be able to play as a team. The individual performances was what mattered. That was what we went to applaud; and unless the cricketer had heroic qualities, we did not want to see him, however valuable he might be. And that was why, those stories of failure, that of the ruined cricketer was the most terrible. In Trinidad lore, he was a recurring figure; he appears in the Trinidad play, Moon on a Rainbow Shawl by Errol John.
Its unfortunate that West Indies as a cricket team has deteriorated drastically in since 2000. That was the time when Naipaul's critical cynicism comes back and reminds us how important the game is to the islands who are not necessarily in the pink of economic health or even a stable political system. Cricket means so much to the West Indies - in terms of geographical unification and beyond just that.

There was a breath of fresh air when Trinidad qualified for the 2006 World Cup, so much so that the West Indies cricket team playing against India in a Test series had its eyes firmly on what Leo Beenhakker's men were about to achieve. Trinidad found a new sport to express itself, fifteen new role-models. They might have not set the world alight in terms of scoring goals, but the football team typified the spirit the nation displays - the passionate splinter that refuses to die down.

Pillay Unplugged

Former Hockey ace Dhanraj Pillay doesn't seem ready to accept that Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) would allow legendary Aussie forward Richard Charlesworth enough space to do his best for the uplift of the team's performance at the international level.<u1:p></u1:p><u2:p></u2:p>

The ace forward Pillay, while praising the qualities of Charlesworth as technical advisor to Indian hockey team, feels that politics 'involved' in the IHF won't give Charlesworth a free hand to do his best.<u1:p></u1:p><u2:p></u2:p>

"He is a legend, who has contributed immensely to world hockey, and don't think that IHF is ready to accept such a man, who can become a problem for them in future with his good working," Pillay said just before playing in an exhibition match in memory of ex-Olympian Vivek Singh in Varanasi early this week.

<u2:p></u2:p><u1:p></u1:p><u1:p></u1:p>"In IHF no body is allowed to work freely and that's why senior players were always neglected. But I thought it was a trifle harsh on poor Manoj Tiwary. Barely 48 hours Down Under he is asked to take on one Brett Lee. But if the match against Australia, is the only one he’s going to get, it would be injustice. More so, when the selection in the first match is justified by the ‘instinct’ of M.S. On January 1 last year, the US Tennis Association (USTA) Northern organised the Coldest Day of Tennis and tried to set a world record for the coldest tennis match ever played (currently this record does not exist). The match started at 8 a.m. with a temperature reading of minus 16 degrees Celsius and ended at 11 a.m. at minus 4. The big challenge was keeping the tennis balls warm enough so that they would bounce. The balls were kept warm in a car that had its engine running, and exchanged every five minutes.

2. British adventurer Lewis Gordon Pugh swam one kilometre in July 2007 near the North Pole to highlight the effects of global warming and break his own record for the world's coldest swim. Sporting just a swimming cap, trunks and goggles, Pugh swam one km in minus 1.8 degrees. "Most people have no idea that you can find patches of open sea at the North Pole in summer," said Pugh, who set the record for the coldest human swim off Antarctica at zero degree.

Did all these people crib about the fact that the courts or the waters were too cold for comfort?

Maybe, Prakash should think twice before playing in the Davis Cup rubber against Uzbekistan in Delhi too. The National Capital is still in the grip of a cold wave!!

Keep the faith

After today’s thrashing — mismatch, massacre, mauling; I can hear the derogatives pouring in as the day goes by — it may seem a little out of place to say these three words: keep the faith. And just in case you thought I didn’t mean what I just said, I am saying it again. Keep the faith in Dhoni’s boys. Thank god for anonymity.

Given that our patience when it comes to sport our patience or thoughts of long-term investment is as firm as a limp biscuit, it wouldn’t be unusual to lambast this team months after we put them on top of the world for we are like this only.

But consider this, all ye baying for young blood. This team did something in one attempt which the Big Daddies of our cricket could not after at least three tries. Most of these boys know what it takes to beat Australia in T20 because they have done it already. And when it took two Test matches for our batting gladiators to get the hang of Australia, their pitches, sledging, a furiously fast and now a fantastic pace ace called Brett Lee, shouldn’t these boys be given a little more time than a game which, if it did go the distance, wouldn’t last more than three hours.

And before we hit the roof about Dhoni’s reported obstinacy in keeping Sourav Ganguly out, just think for a moment whether there would be any sportsman who would deliberately weaken a team he is leading. Also, didn’t Ganguly keep VVS Laxman and Anil Kumble out of ODIs for pretty much the same reasons as he is being kept out now? The old guard has had its time in the sun and deserved every second of it. But, ladies and gentleman, it’s time to move on even if it mans taking a few in the ribs or on the chin.

An ump to a vamp !

"From an umpire to vampire", that's how a fan tiptoeing across the Madhavrao Scindia Stadium during a Duleep Trophy match recently described Steve Bucknor.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

Even as the Sydney fiasco has been buried to death, the man who was at the epicentre of all the drama still continues to be in the news; for all the wrong reasons off-course.

And taking a toll worldwide are the men who are into the same profession it seems !

Providing fillip to such thoughts is the West Zone versus Central Zone Duleep Trophy match.

Even as both teams boasted of many talented players in their ranks, there were a few good knocks too and a fiver-wicket haul, the handful of spectators present inside the stadium though seemed more busy pouring scorn on the two umpires officiating the match. The reasoning for the selection, too, was equally baffling. "We don't have off spinners coming through, so we pushed him as he seemed to be the best on view," explained Bhupinder Singh (Sr), the national selector. Accountability has always been an issue with the IOA and the National Sports Federations (NSFs) that come under its purview. And when the Ministry talks about accountability, the IOA and the federations close ranks as if they are under grave threat of getting wiped out by a tsunami.

Talking after the conclave with the Sports Ministry officials a few days back, Kalmadi spoke about the reasons why training of athletes and organisation of camps should come directly under the IOA and not remain under the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the working arm of the Ministry. Now, with a host of scandals and complete lack of accountability, can the Ministry afford to hand over the huge sums and the reins of running sports in the country to the IOA?
Not that the Ministry --- and the SAI --- have covered themselves with glory as far as financial dealings or team selections go, but at least they are open to vigilance, CAG and CBI investigations.

A fund of 661 crores --- now upgraded to 710 crores --- for the training of athletes for the Commonwealth Games is no small amount! The IOA should first earn the confidence of the Ministry and then talk about other things. And accountability should be stepping stone to building that confidence.

Ronaldo's Scorcher

What a goal ! What-ey-goal, screamed the commentator. And why not mate for it was a screamer of an effort by Cristiano Ronaldo. A free-kick in the 13th minute was good enough to deflate Pompey hopes for the rest of the game. It was an amazing free-kick, taken from 30 yards outside the box - Ronaldo rushed to the spot, gathered himself with his legs spread wide - with only one thing in front of him - the goal (I should say not even the goalkeeper, because the ball left him by a couple of yards easily). And then comes the kick - a perfectly taken one, and hits the net in a flash. David James was left absolutely speechless, - the ball totally missed the goal-keeper, swerved the other way. An outstanding goal - beating the wall, the goalkeeper and his own track-record of free-kicks.

Ronaldo's goal against Portsmouth was his 27th for the season fast closing in on the Manchester United record, held by the great George Best - 32. And what goes in favour of Ronaldo, is the number of games he's played so far - just 24. With a great deal of the season left to be played, Ronaldo should re-write the club's record books, as scoring for fun is something he's been upto all season. For Mancunians alike, Ronaldo is perhaps the best signing ever - and since he's committed his future to the Old Trafford club, watch out for more kicks, swerves and not to forget some kinky sporting moments.

Practice and Perfect

Questions are often asked about the behaviour pitch if a team is out for a paltry score. "How is the pitch?" "Is the pitch so bad for batting?"

Not many accept that the batsmen did not apply themselves and play according to the merit of the ball. For example, South Zone were all out for 157 against North on the opening day of the Duleep Trophy in Ahmedabad. They were 84 for eight and it needed their bowlers R Vinay Kumar and D Kalyankrishna to put up a partnership, the former emerging joint top-scorer. Often, it has been the bowlers who have made the top-order batsmen eat humble pie under such circumstances with their batting skills. And these bowlers hardly get quality time in the nets. How often do we see bowlers taking just throw downs from half-pitch from one of the support staff? The bowlers should also be given good batting practice in the nets. And it is the responsibility of the coach to ensure that the 'tailenders' face good bowlers, not just the batsmen who indulge in slow bowling or tired net bowlers.

When the team is in a disaster, the bowlers could be mightily effective. Now not that I have been to any — relax mom — but the long corridor, the small, dimly-lit rooms at either end and the even more dimly-lit bars really make you wonder how this could be the office of the Capital's cricket association.

As I approached what was going to be my 'haunt' for the next few months — more like my haunting, if you ask me — I was first stopped by the guard.

The guard, despite me telling him I was from the Hindustan Times, and showing him my I-card, didn't seem convinced about my identity and gave me more than just a stare while letting me in.

For one minute, as the guard was looking at my I-card and alternately at me, the thought of something more sinister than just good ol' folks working their socks off for the betterment of the game in the city was being hatched inside the Kotla.

So, anyway once the guard was absolutely certain I wasn't a mole sent by Cricket South Africa to look at the pitch ahead of the game between South Africa A and India A, he let me in.

Now, like any other 'organisation', now terming DDCA an organisation is, in itself, a massive shot in the arm for it, here too, there are certain people who make all the decisions. They might not necessarily be people holding big posts, but they wield much, much more power and influence than most.

Ask anyone who frequents the Kotla — and believe me there are quite a few — who has all the inside information, before anyone else, and you'll be surprised to hear the answers. People, whose official job would be keeping files in order, are the ones who are the be-all and end-all of the day-to-day affairs.

That, in a nutshell, was the first impression I formed of the Ferozeshah Kotla, so long then, till the next time I find myself in the cauldron that is the Kotla. There's plenty more where this came from.

Does fixing really happen in tennis?

Is tennis corrupt? This is the question uppermost in the minds of fans (assuming fans have minds).

There is no solid, Ambuja cement, concrete evidence. But there are some curious facts. There have been curious precedents. These together with common sense suggest that the sport, like most sports, like most human endeavour, is not clean.

Let us look at the facts. In August, World No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko was playing an obscure player from Argentina, Martin Vassallo Arguello, in the second round of the Poland Open. But the money was on Arguello.

Strange.

Davydenko won the first set easily. The money was still on Arguello.

Really strange.

Arguello won the second set. In the third, he was leading 2-1 when Davydenko withdrew, citing injury.

Some 3.5 million pounds were bet on the match, almost ten times what an early round match in a plain vanilla Tour event would attract. Betfair, a gambling portal, thought all this was suspicious. They told the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals).

Since then, some players have acknowledged the murky elements in tennis. Andy Murray said he knows of players being made offers. But no one has admitted to have fixed a result.

On Saturday, the anti-corruption drive claimed its first victim - Italy's Alessio di Mauro. He was banned for nine months. But Di Mauro bet on other players' matches. There was no fixing. Nonetheless, his suspension has added to the atmosphere of dishonesty and disappointment around the sport.

Tennis has faced these charges before. Short Circuit, the roiling book on the world of tennis by Michael Mewshaw, exposed the crooked ways of the game's stakeholders way back in 1983.

The heartening thing is this. If fixing happens, it is logical to believe it generally happens with lower-ranked, lesser-known players. If and when the stars do some hanky-panky, they perhaps do it in small events. A recognised player like Davydenko, just to provide an example, might muck around in the Poland Open but not at the US Open. A no-name, on the other hand, would not have any qualms about betting even in a Grand Slam. He doesn't have a chance or a reputation anyway.

Luckily for contemporary tennis, it has at its vanguard Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Justine Henin, three stars everyone loves and, pertinently, trusts.

Erecting Qutub Minar in a day

You can’t help but feel out of place when you’re interviewing a person in his capacity as the coach of a sports team when someone walks in with a letter stating the termination of his services.

It happened yesterday at the Karnail Singh Stadium where a Ranji game was in progress.
