INGREDIENTS:

Serves 5 (Makes 5 cups)

• 1 1/2 cups sugar
• 4 cups water
• 1 1/2 pounds rhubarb (about 8 stalks), cleaned, trimmed, and cut into 1-inch pieces
• 1 cup shochu (vodka-like Japanese liquor)
• 1/2 cup fresh lime juice

DIRECTIONS:

1. Bring sugar and the water to a boil in large pan over medium heat; cook until sugar is completely dissolved. Reduce heat to low; add rhubarb. Cook until syrup is light pink and rhubarb is tender, about 5 minutes. Strain; refrigerate until ready to use, up to 5 days.
2. Just before serving, combine syrup, shochu, and lime juice in a 2-quart pitcher, and refrigerate.
3. To serve, shake mixture in batches in a cocktail shaker filled with ice; pour into chilled rocks glasses.

I’ll be racing as Bib #31 in the women’s pro field at Ironman Malaysia, and you can track me online at www.ironman.com starting at 7:30am on Saturday, Malaysian time–which is the same as 3:30pm on Friday, California time if you are living closer to Haamonii’s headquarters in San Francisco!

I’m looking forward to a hard, smart day of racing. It’s gonna be a hot one, with the weather from one website forecasting a high of 93F but “feels like” 120F with the humidity!! I’ve been training in Thailand for the past 3 weeks and it actually doesn’t feel as hot as Thailand here, so we’ll see!

It’s gonna be an epic day for sure and the Haamonii will be extra special at the finish line

My name is Jocelyn Wong and I am very happy and honored to become the newest member of the Haamonii team and family. As James mentioned, I am a professional triathlete specializing in the Ironman distance: 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of bicycling, and 26.2 miles of running. 2010 will be my sophomore season as I just turned pro last year, and on the tri circuit I’m better known as my pro alter-ego name, “The Wongstar”!

Now a lot of people are curious, and not sure it makes sense that a shochu company would partner up with an endurance triathlete. Aren’t we athletes supposed to be super healthy and anal like that? Well, yes I suppose I would consider myself to be super healthy, but we athletes also like to enjoy ourselves too. Triathletes are definitely of the mindset “train hard, race hard, and party hard!” Some of the best parties I’ve ever been to are post-race parties following a hard day of racing!

I tasted Haamonii for the first time at the grand opening of New People and was very impressed with how smooth it was. As I’ve learned more about Haamonii Shochu, I also realized that it is indeed a very healthy alternative to other alcoholic beverages.

How can you beat 35 calories per 2-ounce shot versus 120 calories for vodka?! And because Haamonii is so smooth, it’s doesn’t cause hangovers or headaches, so I can still get my training in the next morning! (I’ve proudly tested this theory out myself.) Another health benefit is that shochu has been shown to activate enzymes that help dissolve blood clots–similar to red wine.

I’ll be training and racing all around the globe again this year and looking forward to sharing Haamonii with new and old friends everywhere! I will have some Haamonii with me at all my events to celebrate post-race, beginning with Ironman Malaysia this Saturday, February 27th.

I’m currently in Thailand for a 2-month training camp, but before I left, we made sure to celebrate my send-off with Haamonii at the WISH Bar & Lounge in San Francisco–one of the many places you can order Haamonii cocktails.

She’s the first and only Asian-American female professional Ironman triathlete in the world and a Certified Prosthetist-Orthotist (CPO) making the time to volunteer at prosthetic missions in third world countries and finding it a way to share harmony.

Wongstar’s next race will be in 1 week on Feb. 27, 2010 in Malaysia for Ironman Malaysia. Let’s cheer her on! Go go!
