Harmony in the world within will be reflected in the world without
by harmonious conditions, agreeable surroundings, the best of everything.

Haanel has already told us that the world outside ourselves is a reflection of the world within. (point 8). He now expands on that concept. You will only know harmony in the world outside yourself when you experience harmony within yourself. If you think about that for just a few moments you will accept the truth of what Haanel says.
When you are not at peace in your own sense of being, then you are in a constant state of angst, where your body is in a constant state of readiness for fight or flight, which are the two instinctual responses to danger. Depending on your personality and your upbringing, whenever you find yourself even slightly challenged, you will choose one of those two options.
So, someone bumps you as you walk down the street. If you are in a state of conflict within yourself you will see that simple act as a sign of aggression. Your immediate reaction is to turn and size up the “challenger”, which is what the other person has become.
Chances are, they are doing the same! In a volatile situation like that it only takes the smallest of sparks to set a blaze of inappropriately expressed anger.
That is even more the case when the two of you are in cars. Road rage is rife within the community in which I live, even to the point of people being killed for having driven at the speed limit!
But Haanel focuses on the other end of the scale. When you are comfortable with who you are, when you fit comfortably in your own skin, you will find that the world outside yourself is bright and fresh and new. And no, he’s not referring to some drug induced fantasy world of bright colours and the like.
Rather, he speaks of a world that is seen from an at-peace perspective. Such a world does exist for those who are at peace with who they are in themselves. It’s a perspective that accepts the world is far from perfect, that you, yourself, are far from perfect but at this moment in time you are you would not choose to be anyone or anywhere else.
It’s a perspective that does not see you in competition with others; that does not compare yourself with others; but truly admires and applauds the abilities and accomplishments of others.
It’s a perspective that does not focus on your own limitations, but rejoices in what you are able to do well. At the same time it also recognises that there is so much more that is available that you have yet to experience that you look forward to the future with anticipation.
It’s a perspective that finds enjoyment in the simple things in life, like a magnificent sunset, the unconditional love of a puppy, the fragile vulnerability of a new born baby.
In short, a world where life is really worth living and you choose to squeeze as much out of it as you possibly can.
It’s a world, or a perspective on the world, that is available to all who dare to take the journey to the world within.

The world without is a reflection of the world within.
infinite Power, infinite Supply of all that is necessary,
If we recognize these potentialities in the world within

What Haanel is saying in the first sentence of this point is that the Universe adjusts itself to our perception of what is real. Perhaps it would be more correct to say that our perspective filters the information we take in through our 5 sense gates (sight, hearing, taste, smell , touch) and interprets them in a way which is in keeping with our own, individual belief system. It’s part of our defence mechanism, that allows us to make sense of what is happening outside of ourselves in a way that is in keeping with what we believe.
For each person, that perspective will be slightly different because it is made up of a number of factors including: your values, your attitudes, your experiences, your upbringing and your belief systems. By bringing all those factors into play it is not hard to see how two people could have quite a different perspective on one topic because no two people will have EXACTLY the same values, attitudes, experiences, upbringing or beliefs.
So whose perspective is right?
Answer: Everybody’s.
No doubt you’ve heard the phrase that doesn’t seem get much attention these days that “the customer is always right.” Well, this is where that notion comes from. In his/her own mind the customer IS always right. Even when, or particularly when, the customer is completely wrong, the customer is always right….at least in their mind, which, quite honestly is all that really matters to them. You will never win an argument with someone who, for whatever reason, cannot/will not consider an alternative perspective on the matter.
But that’s not all that is contained within this short sentence. Haanel is also saying that our own individual understanding of the world outside is limited by the amount of time and effort a person has given to exploring the world within. If you have not started the journey to the world within, your perspective of the outside world will, at best, be stunted and incomplete.
We already know that it is from the world within we can access and influence our thoughts and feelings and tap into the power of light and life and beauty (point six), and find the solution for every problem, the cause for every effect. (point seven) But that can only happen if we embark on that journey. Until then, we really have no true understanding of either our place within the whole scheme of things or the potential we have available to us.
As Haanel points out in the rest of this point we have available to us, “ infinite Wisdom, infinite Power, infinite Supply of all that is necessary.” Can you get your mind around that? I certainly struggle with the magnitude of what Haanel is saying. In essence ALL wisdom without limitation, ALL power, without limitation, and everything we could ever need, without limitation is available to us simply by undertaking the journey to the world within!
So, why then do we live such pathetic, miserable lives? Is it because we are unaware of our potential? For some, that may be true. In the main, however, despite all that awaits us, despite it just sitting there, waiting for us to claim, unfold, develop and express we let it sit there, like some discarded gift that has not even been unwrapped.
Not only that, but we moan and complain about how unfair life is and how powerless we are to do anything to change our situations etc.,etc.,etc. when all the while that gift sits, quietly by waiting for us to claim it. That, in my humble opinion, has to be a tragic waste of life.

The Law of Attraction: states that whatever energy you put out into the Universe attracts other energy of equal or harmonious resonance or vibration.
It’s like you have a radio transmitter broadcasting your thoughts in the form of energy waves out into the Universe. As they move about (energy can neither be created or destroyed) they attract other bits of energy to them that resonate with the rate of vibration at which they travel. Put simply, you get what you ask for. The problem arises, however, when your subconscious speaks so loud that it drowns out your conscious thoughts. “I have one million dollars” as a positive affirmation is often swamped by “for the life of me I don’t know how I going to get it, but it would be nice to have.” As a result it doesn’t happen and you think, “see, I knew it wouldn’t work” So, what was the over-riding message you were conveying to the Universe? That you didn’t expect to get it. And guess what happened, your expectations were fulfilled, you didn’t get it. Does that prove or disprove the Law of Attraction? Neither. Like all the Universal Laws, the Law of Attraction just is, and does not need your permission to be able to operate.
If you were to go anywhere on the planet and say, “I do not believe in the Law of Gravity” as you jump off a cliff, does that non-belief cancel out the effect of gravity on your body? Nope? You will fall until you hit something solid, regardless of whether or not you continue your beliefs about gravity. So, to say, “I’ve tried this Law of Attraction thingy and it doesn’t work, therefore there is no such law” is simply an example of being closed minded. It has worked, just not in the way you expected it would.
Have you ever had a situation where something happened quite coincidently. Earl Nightingale, a well known broadcaster of the last century said that coincidence was when opportunity met with preparedness. Let me give an example of a coincidence that I believe really wasn’t.
Our son was on his way to work early on a Saturday morning. It was just after 7am when he turned off the freeway, encountered some water on the off ramp, his van aquaplaned, tipped and hit a tree. Our son was critically injured in that moment. He’s fine now, having defied all the doctors’ prognoses. But, here is the amazing thing. Directly behind him at that time was a police officer who was heading back to the station to finish his night duty! He was literally at the scene as it happened before him and, because of his training knew exactly what to do. As a result precious minutes were saved that I believe were the difference between our son living or dying as a result of that crash. Coincidence? Maybe. I prefer to think that his mother’s and my desire for his safety were strong enough to put that police officer in that place at that time, and as a result he is alive and well today.
We would have preferred that it didn’t happen, but enough little things, seemingly unrelated things, came together at that moment so that the crash did happen and our son didn’t walk away unscathed. But, for me, the Law of Attraction worked in that instance, and no-one will convince me any differently.
You see the Law of Attraction, indeed all the Universal Laws work with what is, rather than work against it. The reality was that our son was critically injured. The fact also was there was, arguably one of the most qualified people possible there on the scene as it happened and as a result our son had a chance of survival. A miracle, by contrast, is something that happens which defies the laws of nature. So, this was not a miracle. What is seemingly miraculous is that despite all the medical evidence our son not only lived through the ordeal, but is now, for all intents and purposes, fully recovered from something he should not have survived.
So the Law of Attraction is not some sort of magic genie that supplies your smallest wish. It is a very powerful force in our lives which needs to be understood so that it can be “aligned with” if you want to experience its benefits to the fullest extent. I used the term “aligned with’ because there is no way you can ‘master’ any of the Universal Laws. All you can ever do is align yourself with them so they can respond to you to the fullest extent. That is simply an implication of the Law of Vibration. All the Universal Laws work together. You cannot focus on one to the exclusion of the others.

Haanel wrote:
all laws of power and possession are also within our control.
What are those laws of power and possession to which Haanel refers? They are, in fact, the seven Universal Laws. Unless you have been hiding in a cave somewhere for the last few years, chances are you have heard of the Law of Attraction. It became the ‘flavour of the month” through the film “The Secret” and the book of the same name.
But as is often the case The Secret told only part of the story. The tip of the iceberg if you will. If you are one of the millions who latched onto the secret as a quick and easy way to make money, only to find it did not work for you, this is the reason why. The Law of attraction is just one of seven universal laws THAT DO WORK. In fact they work, with or without your permission, with or without your knowledge. Your life at this time is a direct result of the seven Universal Laws at work …by default. Those Universal Laws have been operating in your life since the day you were born. That is a reality, whether you believe it or not. The key is to be able to work in harmony with those laws and benefit from what they are doing, rather than working in ignorance and in many instances suffering the consequences.
So what are these Universal Laws and how do they affect your life? This is only a brief introduction to the Laws, none the less, they will be more easily digested if I break here and handle them one at a time.
The Law of Vibration: The Law of Vibration states EVERYTHING that exists in the Universe is, in it’s purest form, energy that is vibrating at one level or another. It goes further in saying that all energy is the same. There are not different types of energy, but one form of energy that is present in different forms, or, if you prefer, vibrating at different frequencies. Once you can grasp the implications of that, a whole lot of things start to fall into place. Basically, everything and everybody is inextricably (I’ve been looking for a place to use that word!) joined. To help you understand the profundity (there’s another word I’ve had waiting to use) of this reality let me use an analogy I have used elsewhere in a different context.
Many people see themselves as a marble, in amongst a whole lot of other marbles. Each marble is unique, (maybe I should use snowflakes…but then the analogy wouldn’t work) and quite distinct from all the other marbles in the container. Each of the marbles in the container have only superficial contact with some of the other marbles in the container, but in that contact maintain their separateness from every other marble. If fact, if one of the marbles was to be taken out of the container, the rest would simply shuffle around and fill the place left and very quickly any evidence that marble had ever existed would be lost. We’ll leave that picture there because as is the case with all analogies, once you push it too far, it starts to disintegrate.
The Law of Vibration is telling us that we are, by contrast, a giant piece of honeycomb, where the individual cells are, in fact made up by the existence of the cells that surround it. (see picture for clarification)

Each cell in the honeycomb is inextricably (there’s that word again…such bliss) linked with all the other cells in the structure, and if one of those cells were missing, six others would be immediately affected and the whole structure would be weakened. If a cell of honeycomb could laugh, the whole structure would vibrate with the joy. If a cell of honeycomb could cry, the whole structure would get wet. What affects the one, affects the whole.
The import of this reality are truly amazing, dare I say world changing. WE ARE ALL ONE. There is no ‘them’ and ‘us’. There is no ‘other’. We are all manifestations of THE ONE because there is nothing else!
Now, just an aside for a moment to raise two points. First is, and this is truly amazing, the timing of Haanel’s work. Most of us in the Twenty First Century were taught at school that matter is really energy. E=MC2 and all that. So, the facts of what we are considering here is not something new to us. But Haanel was writing in the time before Einstein’s discoveries were widely known! The basic understanding that people of the time had was Newtonian physics which claimed the world as it exists came about mainly as a result of the forces of gravity; that atoms were the basic building block of all nature and were solid in form! It was only with the capacity to be able to break the atom into its component parts that the true nature of ‘matter’ could be discovered. That didn’t happen, at least publicly for more than a decade after Haanel wrote The Master Key System!
Now my second point in this brief informative interlude may seem like a blatant plug. That’s because it is. I have written a series of novels exploring, at least in part, \what this idea that we are all one really means and how it might be realized in practical terms. As my gift to you, I am offering the first novel in that series, totally free of charge. You can download the PDF version of it by clicking here. I hope it inspires you sufficiently to do something!

Haanel wrote:
The world within is governed by mind. When we discover this world we shall find the solution for every problem, the cause for every effect;
Having introduced us to the world within and all its potential in point six, Haanel now provides us with the key to that world. It is mind. Let’s explore the concept of mind for a few moments.
What is the relationship between your brain and your mind? Some would say that the mind is one function of the brain and is therefore is contained within the brain. But is that all there is to it. If that were the case we would each be limited to those things we have personally experienced. It would not explain how it is possible to imagine something that we have not actually experienced or create something that does not yet exist.
It also has no answer to why we ask the questions we do, like “what is the difference between the brain and the mind?” or “why does it even matter?”. In fact if mind was not more than the brain, this material would not even exist, because (a) there would be no point because no one would be interested, and (b) I would not have the capacity to explore the subject.
That then begs the question, what is mind? Notice that Haanel does not say the mind, he just says mind. I have already written about mind and Universal Mind and it is this to which Haanel refers throughout his work. But here he goes further than we have already explored. He is saying that the world within is governed by Universal Mind and that as we journey within we can tap into all that is contained within Universal Mind.
By journeying to the world within we will find, in effect, answers to all the questions we have about life. That is a pretty amazing claim and one I think that needs a little qualification. Purely from my perspective, what I believe Haanel is saying in this is that we will have access to… “ the solution for every problem, the cause for every effect…” I say that because I have only ever received answers to the questions I have asked. I don’t yet have the answers to questions I have never asked! And there is a very good reason for that.
As a matter of survival we, as a species have developed filtering mechanisms to sift through all the information with which we are bombarded every second of ever day. At this stage of our development as a species we do not have the capacity to give the same attention to every piece of information we receive. So, we pay attention to that which is relevant to us at that particular moment in time and push the rest to one side. That means the majority of the information that comes our way is relegated to the “of no current interest” pile, which quickly takes up the biggest area of the storage warehouse that is our subconscious mind.
Just a few examples of what I mean:
•	I have little involvement in the fact that the person sitting opposite me in the bus is wanting to give up smoking.
•	I have no interest in what sort of dog my neighbour is looking to buy.
•	I care little that my work colleague has moved in with his long term girlfriend.
Now, in each of those examples
1.	they do not affect the way I live my life
2.	I was not consulted in the decision making process
so although those topics may be part of the discussion over a cup of coffee, they don’t rate high in the range of things that occupy my mind.
If, however the person sitting opposite me on the bus was my flat mate, or I happened to be a breeder of dogs, with puppies for sale, or my work colleague’s girlfriend was someone I had feelings for, it might be a different story. I may then have a personal interest in each of those scenarios because
1.	they do involve some part of my life to one degree or another
2.	I have a personal interest in the outcome.
Bottom line is that we have become very selective in what we take in and involve ourselves with. Some might call it desensitizing, I call it survival.
So, I am not concerned that I have not received answers to the questions I have not asked. There may come a time when I ask further questions, but for the moment I rest content in where I am at this point in my development.
The main point, however is that the potential is still there, available once we have discovered the world within. The only limitations are the ones we place on ourselves.
Almost as an afterthought, Haanel tells us that because we have control over the world within, we “also have control over all laws of power and possession”
What is he saying? Bottom line: you are totally in control of your own life, what happens to you, what the future holds, what sort of life you experience.
Now that can be great news, or more often, terrible news depending on what sort of life you are living.
The Great News: You have all you need to do whatever you choose to do in life. Your greatest dreams can become your reality, if you are prepared to work at it. All you need to do is tap into that inner world, and choose your pathway.
The Terrible News: You have all you need to do whatever you choose to do in life. The life you are living is exactly where you have chosen to be at this point in time. The only place you can look to find the person responsible for whatever is happening to you, is that one whose reflection looks back from the mirror.
Which is it for you? I venture to suggest the very fact that you are reading this material, you have decided that this powerful revelation is in the great news category. In that case let’s move on to consider what that actually means.
At its ultimate, this power means that within the human race we have the ability to solve any of the problems we face as a species. But we only have to look around us to know we are a long way from such a world. That is because, at this point in time there is a very small minority who are willing to hear that message.
The majority of people on this planet are more pre-occupied with proving they are right. That means everyone else, who does not share their particular belief system, is wrong. They are obsessed with differences, rather than focusing on similarities. They live in a world dominated by fear of “the other”. That overwhelming level of fear felt by the populace is both generated and maintained by those who, believing “might is right” engage in sabre rattling exercises designed to show how powerful their side is and what the other side can expect if it don’t submit to their demands.
Living in a world dominated by fear limits the possibilities of embarking on the journey within. How can you focus on the world within when there is constant threat from the world without? And the threat doesn’t even have to be real. It only has to be presumed. The end result is the same. As a result those in positions of leadership have control over the masses and can easily manipulate them any way they please.
But that does not mean you have to buy into that whole scenario. You can choose, if you want to undertake the journey within. As Haanel tells us, you have the capacity to do that. It is simply a case of taking control of your mind or more correctly that part of the Universal Mind to which you have access. But simple does not necessarily mean easy. There is any amount of support from those who have begun the journey for themselves and discovered a whole new way of living that is on a different level from what most people experience. Whether or not you choose that path is entirely your decision.

Haanel wrote:
There is a world within – a world of thought and feeling and power; of light and life and beauty and, although invisible, its forces are mighty.
The world within is for most people the last unexplored frontier. Your inner world is something that only you can explore in any depth, just as I am the only one who can explore my inner world to any true extent. You may find it helpful to have someone assist you with your journey, but there will come a point beyond which even that person cannot go. And you must go on alone if you are to experience the light, life and beauty to which Haanel refers.
Those three words speak of goodness, of wholeness, of fulfilment. The concepts of light, life and beauty are attractive to those who seek something better than what they experience at this moment. They draw those who seek a more complete life with the promise of something more that is tantalizingly available for the asking.
For those who are afraid, ashamed or feel inferior, light is viewed as something that exposes the harsh reality of what is; life is seen as burden to be endured, that at times becomes unbearable; and beauty only serves to emphasise the ugliness they have collected around themselves in an attempt to keep others at a manageable distance.
In order to reach this inner world, however, you will need to firstly deal with the outer layers of thought and feeling which is the point at which the two worlds connect. This is probably the hardest part of the journey to the world within. That is because the life you live at this moment in time has been determined by your thoughts which combined with your feelings have become your attitudes about things, in essence your belief system. (See my work on attitudes)
One of the defence strategies the human system uses to protect itself is to avoid change as strongly as possible, for as long as possible. The sub-conscious thought processes that reach that conclusion go something like this:
“I have survived, reasonably well, until this point using the system of beliefs I have developed over the years. To change that for something that is untried, untested may place me in a position of danger where my very existence is threatened. It is therefore in my best interests to maintain the status quo.”
The subconscious mind does not have the capacity to differentiate between good or bad, right or wrong, which means it cannot determine whether one system of beliefs is ‘better’ than another. Value judgements take place in the conscious mind. However, it is the subconscious mind that has control over your feelings and when your feelings clash with your rational thought processes, your feelings will win out every time.
As a result, when you first start out on the journey to the world within, it is often a case of two steps forward, one step back. You might even find yourself subconsciously subverting your own best efforts. That is quite natural and you will have times when you wonder whether it is all worth it. And all this is done in your own best interests by your subconscious mind, which at the end of the day is trying to protect you from getting yourself into a dangerous situation.
You see, some of the concepts your subconscious will hang on to, tenaciously, are
“what you know, as inadequate as it might be, is a safer bet than what you don’t know”
and
“if you change one aspect of your belief system, how do you know the rest won’t fall apart and leave you in chaos”
and the one that had me stuck for quite a while…
“if you change, how do you know you will like the person you will become?”
That is why it is often the case that people have to reach an absolute crisis point in their lives where they will do anything to stop the mental pain and anguish before they start on the journey to the world within. The risk you run by waiting until then is that another more permanent option becomes an attractive proposition; suicide. In too many instances people at that point will choose what they believe to be the only option left to them and, tragically, end their lives. It is not so much that they want to die. Rather it is an attempt to stop the anguish they are experiencing.
***
I find it interesting that as a species we have explored just about as much as it is possible, given the current limits we face in our understanding of the time/space continuum. Billions upon billions of dollars are spent exploring as far as we are able to reach into “outer space”, while at the same time we struggle with problems that can be directly related to individuals’ sense of self. Problems that in some situations have reached pandemic proportions.
That sense of self can only be addressed by undertaking a journey to the centre of the world within. It is there, and only there where you can address those thoughts, those feelings that have direct effect on who you see yourself to be, which in turn expresses itself in how you respond to the world around you.
It is not an easy journey to take. As I have already mentioned it is one that only you can take, so you will have to do it for yourself. That, of course, means taking responsibility. If there is anything that makes people shudder it is the idea that they might have to take responsibility for themselves. Huge industries have been established, huge amounts of money changes hands daily in an attempt to shift the responsibility that each of us should take for ourselves, onto someone else.
If something goes wrong, the knee jerk reaction of many is to seek out someone else to blame, someone else to hold responsible. But taking the journey inward is, in part about taking responsibility for yourself. Responsibility, in this sense, means
Accepting that I create All of my sensations Thoughts, feelings And actions.
By denying, or avoiding responsibility you lose out big time. That’s because accepting responsibility makes it possible for you to respond to whatever it is you are faced with at the time. It makes you response-able. By accepting responsibility which is part of the journey within, you are able to tap into the ‘power’ and ‘mighty forces’ Haanel talks of in his brief description of the world within. What that power is, what those forces are is not explained in this point, but will be a topic of some consideration throughout Haanel’s work.

Haanel wrote:

We cannot express powers that we do not possess. The only way by which we may secure possession of power is to become conscious of power. We can never become conscious of power until we learn that all power comes from within.
It is at this point we need to distinguish between power and authority. Often those two words are used interchangeably, yet they are quite distinctly different.

Authority, according to the dictionary, is
The power or right to enforce obedience

It is essentially external to the individual. A person may have authority, but only to the extent that it is given to them by someone, or somebody apart from themselves.

For example, a person may have the authority to preside over a large corporation. . That authority is given by the people who have a personal interest in the company, namely the shareholders.
A person may have the authority to preside over a country. That authority is given by the people who have a personal interest in the way the country is run, namely the citizens.
Alternatively, a person may claim the authority to rule over a country as a dictator, but only to the extent that those who maintain the dictatorship provide the support necessary to “enforce obedience” on the populace.

On a more personal scale a person may have authority over another either because the one with authority is the parent in the case of a child or has been given authority by the person concerned as may be the case in an elderly or disabled person.

The whole point is, authority comes from without. It is external.

Power, on the other hand has to do with ability. All power, as Haanel reminds us, comes from within. You have power; all the power you will ever need to live your life to the full. Unfortunately, many people have laid their power down and given over authority for their lives to someone else. No matter what the situation is now, that initial laying down of power was a matter of personal choice.

It may have been the ‘best of a bad lot’ compromise that has developed into something other than you had intended. It may have been a matter of choosing the line of least resistance. If you are in that position, you need to come to terms with the fact that someone else only has authority over you while you allow it. I am not inciting revolution here. Rather, I am talking from an individual perspective, although the principles work at all levels in which you operate.

Viktor Frankl wrote of this concept in his book “Man’s Search for Meaning”
We who lived in concentration camps can remember
the men who walked through the huts comforting others,
giving away their last piece of bread. They may have
been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof
that everything can be taken from a man but one thing:
the last of the human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude
in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.

Each one of us has that ability, the power to choose HOW WE WILL RESPOND TO WHATEVER HAPPENS TO US. We may not have a choice as to what actually happens. We do, however have the power to choose our response. And that is the essence of the power that we have. It’s part of the total package we came into this life with. So why not use it?

Many who happily lay down their power do so with the mistaken idea that by effectively handing their life over for someone else to manage they can avoid any personal responsibility. As a result those people never mature, never live their life to the full, never achieve anything of any lasting significance. What a waste!!!

But that waste is compounded by the fact that there is every likelihood the person concerned is not even aware of the power they have available to them. It’s like a beggar receiving a check for $1 million, but never bothering to cash it because he doesn’t have a bank account.

We each have an incredible amount of power available for us to use. Yet, whenever we feel inadequate we tend to look everywhere else for help. I guess that makes sense because feelings of inadequacy don’t really fit with having a sense of power. Yet, as illogical as it seems, Haanel rightly points out “all power is from within”. For those willing to take up the challenges in life and meet them head on, that’s good news.

For those who hesitate, maybe the news is not so good, because at the end of the day, or as they lay on their death bed reviewing their life, they really have no one else to blame other than themselves for whatever life was for them

The Johari Window, named for its inventors, Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham, is one of the most useful models for describing the process of human interaction. A four windowlled “window,” (see diagram below), divides personal awareness into four different types, as represented by its four quadrants: free, hidden, blind, and unknown. The lines dividing the four windows can expand, or contract during or as a result of any interaction between two people.

In this model, each person is represented by their own window. Let’s describe mine:

1. The “free” quadrant represents things that both I know about myself, and that you know about me.

For example, I know my name, and so do you.(It’s Graham, by the way) you know something about me. The knowledge that the free window represents, can include not only factual information, but my feelings, motives, behaviors, wants, needs and desires… indeed, any information describing who I am. It can be obvious (just by looking) at me or it might be something I disclose, like my favorite color.

When I first meet a person, the size of the opening of this first quadrant is not very large, since there has been little time to exchange information. As the process of getting to know one another continues, the window expands, placing more information into the open window, as described below.

2. The “blind” quadrant represents things that you know about me, that I am unaware of. So, for example, we could be eating at a restaurant, and I may have unknowingly gotten some food on my face. This information is in my blind quadrant because you can see it, but I cannot. If you now tell me I have something on my face, then the free window expands to the right, enlarging the free quadrant’s area.

Now, I also admit to having blindspots with respect to many other much more complex things. For example, perhaps in our ongoing conversation, you may notice that eye contact seems to be lacking. You may not say anything, since you may not want to embarrass me, or you may draw your own inferences that perhaps I am being insincere. Then the problem is, how can I get this information out in the open, since it may be affecting the level of trust that is developing between us?

How can I learn more about myself? Unfortunately, there is no readily available answer. I may notice a slight hesitation on your part, and perhaps this may lead to a question. But who knows if I will pick this up, or if your answer will be on the mark.

3. The “hidden” quadrant represents things that I know about myself, that you do not know.

So for example, I have not told you, nor mentioned anywhere on this site, what one of my favorite ice cream flavors is. This information is in my “hidden” quadrant. As soon as I tell you that I love rum and raisin flavored ice cream, I am effectively moving the information in my hidden quadrant and enlarging the free quadrant’s area.

Again, there are vast amounts of information, virtually my whole life’s story, that has not been revealed to you. As we get to know and trust each other, I will then feel more comfortable disclosing more intimate details about myself. This process is called: “Self-disclosure.”

4. The “unknown” quadrant represents things that neither I know about myself, nor you know about me. Not much either of us can do about that, or is there?

Haanel wrote:

This is true because we must ‘be’ before we can ‘do’ and we can ‘do’ only to the extent which we ‘are’, and what we are depends on what we ‘think’

Which came first, the chicken or the egg. Which determines what? Does your “method of thinking” (discussed in point three) determine who you are or does who you are determine your method of thinking.

Haanel leaves us in no doubt that thinking is the foundational activity in the whole process. Thinking determines who you are at any given point of time, and it is from who you are that you act the way you do. At least, from your personal perspective.

Others people, outside yourself first get to know you through your actions, which will include things like the way you hold yourself, your grooming, the clothes you wear, the way you speak etc. etc.etc. If they choose to develop that relationship further, given time and the development of trust, you will eventually get around to sharing your thoughts and ideas. (For a fuller treatment of this see Thanks Joe, Thanks Harry

And that is where so many people get it wrong. They focus on their actions first and foremost. They are more concerned with ‘doing’ rather than ‘being’ and that, almost always leads to one of two results. Either they are trapped playing a role which is different from who they really are or they gradually reveal their true nature and, because it is different from the image they initially presented, they face rejection.

Why is that? Because of underdeveloped self-esteem many people will go to extraordinary lengths to appear to be someone other than who they truly are. Their thinking goes something like this:

I am not happy with my current situation. I need to change it. I need to find a new group of friends. In order to do that I need to make myself attractive enough so they will want me as a friend. I need to change the way I do things, because what I have been doing so far hasn’t got me what I wanted. So, I will act different and present myself as someone other than who I really am.

Uh-oh!!! Can you see the flaws in that line of reasoning? It is contained within the sentence ” I need to change the way I do things” Haanel has rightly pointed out that the starting point is not in the doing but in the thinking. To change who you are (assuming that is what you want to do) you need to change your thinking first. The rest will come as a natural consequence.

We learned back in point two that Mind is Creative Thinking is the process of using Mind to develop creative energy that can change your current situation to something quite different from what you have now. It will invariably take longer than, say buying a new outfit, but it will be more authentic, less energy sapping and definitely longer lasting in its effects.

Authentic in the sense of what you do will reflect the true winner you are.
Less energy sapping in the sense that you will not have to continually create the illusion of being someone you are not
Longer lasting in its effects in the sense that once you get comfortable with the new you, maintaining your new self will be a breeze.

But, what if you don’t want to change who you are? What if you are very comfortable with your sense of being. Then simply allow that to permeate through all you do. And that, my friend is a life of integrity, which is just about the highest standard of life anyone is capable of.

Living a life of integrity does not mean that you will necessarily be liked by everyone. In fact, I can guarantee you won’t. But, if you are true to who you are, and allowing, even encouraging, others to be true to who they are then you are making this world a better place and if I could, I would shake your hand and say thank you!
