KISS STARTS AFL SEASON ON A WINNING NOTE

The owners of the LA KISS seem to be going all out to put a winner on the field for the first time in franchise history, and if Saturday's season opener against the Jacksonville Sharks is any indication, the third-year organization is on the right track.

The KISS blew open a tight game in the fourth quarter and cruised to a 64-39 victory at Honda Center, scoring more points than in any game last season, when they lost their first nine games before finishing 4-14.

"I'm somewhat overwhelmed," said KISS coach Omarr Smith, who was making his head coaching debut. "I didn't expect this night to go this well."

You have been in the music artist and celebrity branding, licensing and merchandising business for almost 40 years starting with the Grateful Dead in the 1970’s Give us a “quick sizzle” of your background and how that came about.

I met Bill Graham in the Seventies when he promoted concerts at Stanford. I was a senior, a political science major and had planned to go to law school. Once I met Bill, I decided I would take a year off and learn the concert industry. As my good fortune would have it, at about this time, both the concert and merchandise industries exploded.
Ironically, back in the 70’s, few bands wanted to sell merchandise as it was considered very unhip, uncool and way too commercial. However, the Dead looked upon selling shirts as a “community thing” and were pleased to have their fans wearing Dead shirts.
After the Dead, Bill would introduce me to the different bands when they played Winterland Arena and I was able to convince them to sell shirts. Soon Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Journey, Fleetwood Mac, Boston and others came on board.
In the early Eighties, I made deals with the Rolling Stones, Madonna, U2, Ozzy, George Michael and the business really took off on a global basis. In 1984 we handled the merchandise for Springsteen’s massive Born in the USA Tour. The tour continued for almost 2 years and at the time was the biggest grossing concert merch tour ever.
In 1987 we made a deal with New Kids on the Block and we had our first massive hit at retail. We licensed every product imaginable: dolls, sneakers, stationary products, apparel, jewelry, McDonald’s Happy Meals, books, board games, poster, caps, sunglasses, animated TV series, stand ups etc.
We continued to build a great roster by adding Kiss, Billy Joel, Elton John, The Who and in the early Nineties Michael Jackson, Shakira and Barbra Streisand.

Explain to me how the concert and merchandise industries work together.

In the beginning all merchandise deals were handshakes. Now, of course, all deals are lengthy and ponderous 40 page contracts. We always contract directly with the Artist. The Artist in turn contracts with the promoter and guarantees our right to sell at their concerts.
In the beginning, we only sold merch at concerts. By the mid-Eighties we started selling and licensing others to sell - record stores, head shops, jean shops followed by selling to major retailers and ultimately direct online.
Today we have built a huge licensing business: Madonna skin care products, Kiss slot machines, ACDC Thunderstruck tequila, John Lennon Imagine Peace apparel, Woodstock cannabis products, Aerosmith Sneakers, CBGB Restaurant.
We handles all licensing for Kiss: pinball games, condoms, credit cards, Halloween masks, action figures, mini golf, pool tables and on and on.
Our team designs the merchandise in-house and then works with third party licensees, manufacturers and distributors to place at retail.Buying a concert shirt today is now part of the overall concert going experience worldwide. Longtime fans have built large personal collections and speak about them with great reverence.

So what now? You’ve been very flexible with adjusting to the times. Now, what’s your next step?

Today for Epic Rights, it is all about using technology and digital media to engage and grow the artist fan base and to offer a full suite of Artist’s Service including: designing and managing the artist’s brand via their official website and social media, branding and licensing, VIP ticketing/fan experiences/fan clubs, E Commerce sale of music and merch, merchandising.
With Epic Rights, an Artist’s merchandising is fully integrated with the bands overall branding and marketing strategy that drives their music sales, ticket sales, sponsorships and endorsement opportunities and the like.

What’s the most challenging yet rewarding part of your job?

Paul Stanley’s Soul Station Announces Early 2016 Shows

Soul Station, the R&B covers band fronted by Paul Stanley, will play a handful of concerts in February 2016. The Kiss singer made the announcement earlier today.

Unfortunately, Stanley isn’t traveling very far to perform. All three nights will take place in Southern California, San Juan Capistrano (Feb. 26), Agoura Hills (Feb. 27) and Pasadena (Feb. 28).

Stanley debuted the 10-piece Soul Station at the Roxy in Los Angeles back in September. The setlist ranged from Motown (The Temptations, the Miracles) to Memphis (Al Green) to Philadelphia (The Stylistics, the Delfonics). In a statement announcing these three concerts, Stanley passionately explained why he needed to play these songs.

“We’re living in a time of being fed canned pre-programmed backing tracks and lip syncing in place of the electricity and passion of real live R&B,” he said. “When I was a boy, before I ever saw the Who or Led Zeppelin, I saw Solomon Burke and Otis Redding. I saw the Temptations and all that music is part of the foundation of the music I’ve made. Soul Station is my chance to celebrate it for a night that’s real, live and faithfully recreates the sound with the respect it deserves. Whether it’s the Stylistics, the Dramatics, the Temptations, Smokey [Robinson] and the Miracles, Blue Magic and on, these songs, arrangements and sound just blow you away. I don’t play guitar in the band and we don’t do a single Kiss song. That’s not what this is about. It’s magical to hear those songs played right and we’re making magic.”

KISS'S PAUL STANLEY DEBUTS SOUL STATION AT THE ROXY

When it comes to the members of stadium-rockers/blood-spitters/facepaint-slatherers/unabashed merch-peddlers KISS, the adjective “authentic” doesn’t immediately spring to mind. And most people probably wouldn’t peg anyone in KISS as an aficionado of the golden age of Motown and Philly soul. But KISS’s Paul Stanley was a changed man – a man unmasked, or a man with nothing to lose, if you will – when he debuted his labor-of-love, note-for-note R&B cover band at Los Angeles’s 500-capacity Roxy club Friday night… with KISS’s longtime drummer Eric Singer playing behind him, and Gene Simmons and Bruce Kulick observing from the audience.

Taking the stage in a simple suit jacket, vest, and jeans with his crack 10-piece ensemble, Paul Stanley’s Soul Station, the 63-year-old rock legend – a man usually known for his wildly mouthy rock ‘n’ roll banter – spent much of his between-song stage time pining for the soulful music of his youth. “There was a time not too long ago when you’d turn on the radio and you’d hear songs written by real songwriters, sung by real singers, played by real musicians,” he sighed at the start of the show. “These songs mean a lot of us… These songs were built to last… These songs weren’t written with a computer!”

It all could have seemed like the grumblings of some grumpy old man, a sort of rock ‘n’ roll Andy Rooney, if Stanley hadn’t been so damn cheerful – and so utterly earnest. This was not some novelty act or a lark. Stanley’s respect and love for this material was admirably evident, whether he was doling out history lessons on Gamble & Huff, Stax/Volt, and Holland-Dozier-Holland or, in an uncharacteristically ego-free moment, letting gifted backup singer Crystal Starr handle wailing lead vocals on the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” (one of the set’s highlights) while he held back and simply rattled a tambourine.

“We’ve got great, great singers. I would be nothing without these singers,” Stanley admitted, referring to Starr and her fellow dynamite backup belters, Ayana Layli and Nelson Beato. “This feels like family. This feels really special… I am so thrilled and so humbled to be making this music with these people.”

As for when Stanley took the lead on '60s and '70s soul classics like the Temptations’ “Just My Imagination,” Smokey Robinson’s “Tracks of My Tears,” or Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together,” his vocals were disappointingly low in the mix and sometimes drowned out by the more robust Starr/Layli/Beato. (Someone needed to crank up the volume on his old-fashioned chrome microphone!) However, his falsetto soul croon was still surprisingly legitimate. And the fact that Soul Station stayed faithful to the songs’ original arrangements – no show-offy metal guitar licks, no fussy arena drum solos, nothing reminiscent of Stanley’s famous main band – proved how much this music means to him.

In fact, Stanley’s enthusiasm was so infectious – straight through to the encore of “O-o-h Child,” a song he said he picked because of its message of optimism and hope – that not a single KISS Army member in the intimate audience ever cried out for “Love Gun” or “Detroit Rock City.” The fans were as respectful of this music as their idol was, making for a sweet night of soul celebration.

The same can be said for the group’s ability to rock plugged in or unplugged. Following up a successful acoustic performance at San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino in 2014, the legendary rock group will be returning to the Highland casino for a repeat performance Thursday, July 23.

Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and the guys will perform a stripped-down set of some of their classics without all the pop and pizazz of a regular Kiss show. Simmons talked about the group’s show, music and more in a recent telephone interview.

Q: When you did the acoustic and storytelling-style show at San Manuel last year, Paul remarked a few times that you didn’t know if you’d ever do it again. What made you decide to bring it back?

A: We enjoyed it. Like all things that we do, we do it only if we want to. Sometimes it takes a lot of work. Sometimes it’s just seamless. Like when we do the Kiss cruises, it’s a lot of work. You’re talking, making sure every person gets personalized signed stuff, pose for photos with every person and do a few shows. Playing at your place (San Manuel) is seamless. You sort of get up and it feels like somebody’s in your living room, compared to the stadiums we play in. It’s easy and we get a chance to not worry about the pyrotechnics and technical stuff. It feels informal.

Q: In an intimate way?

A: Yeah. It’s not so much showbiz. It’s a chance to peel off the outer layer and let the fans see more of the real people.

Note from Gene:

We have a day off before the big show in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Tomorrow, we are expecting over 60,000 fans.
Today, was a bookstore signing to celebrate the Brazilian version of my ME, INC book.
I was expecting a few hundred fans.
But what met me, was a store that was over packed. And the overwhelming passion and emotion, got to me, I must say.
Some of the fans cried. Little children ran over and hugged me. I felt as if I had reunited with long-lost members of my family.
On the way out, I wanted to try to take big group photos with the fans, but it didn't quite turn out as well as I wanted it to. It nearly turned into a riot, although with good intentions. I didn't want the fans to get trampled, so I beat out a hasty retreat, with the great security staff there.
Unfortunately, our assistant Hab, was thrown to the ground by the excited fans, and the books he was carrying were knocked out of his hand. Luckily, he was not hurt.
All in all, a day I will not soon forget.
Thank you.
Now let's go tear the roof off of São Paulo.

Is the European music licensing business changing?

“In the end, the objective is very simple: Epic’s singular focus is to maximize earnings for its artists, celebrities and corporate brands by executing a cohesive licensing, marketing and distribution program. All of this is accomplished by a thorough understanding of the artists and global marketplace, while harnessing the power and reach of social media.”

This is Dell Furano’s vision, Epic Rights’ CEO, who just partnered in Europe with CPLG. Furano is no newcomer: he dropped out from Live Nation after creating the first real US musical licensing and management business since the 80s. Now that his rich and deep rock artists’ roster will be managed in Europe by CPLG, one of the biggest independent entertainment licensing agency in Europe, the business could change. Competition will be harder with the big boys Bravado/Universal and Live Nation, and if the full management model will prove right and possible, it could open new opportunities. Both Universal and Live Nation in fact specializes in the music business, licensing included, but when it comes to licensing, the process remains often too complex and inefficient to appeal European medium sized licensees. Will CPLG be able to treat Kiss or Def Leppard just like Pink Panther or the Minions? Time (and management) will tell, but it could really be a new chapter in the European music licensing business.
