I started a new job, married some folks, danced, drank, and dazzled. It's no excuse, but just be happy I'm back...

today's posting was send from my step-father... it's an interesting article about how it's now cool for adults to act like kids. I couldn't agree more, except for the whole "it's now cool" thing. I mean, when was it ever NOT cool to do this. Maybe it's just me, an eternal child, that has always felt this way. Keeping that connection with your youth is very important. It keeps you open to new ideas, allows you to have fun, and in general just keeps that old-fuddy-duddy feeling at bay.

Personally I find there are several keys to keeping in touch with your younger side of life:
1. At least once a week say something childish, such as "I know you are , but what am I?"
2. Watch a young friend (an actual child in this case) interact with something new. Appreciate how they are perceiving the world and try and look with a fresh perspective. Are they amazed by a tree? Then you should be as well.
3. Play a childhood game. You'd be surprised how fun a round of four-square can be. But no baby-hits.
4. Eat a bunch of candy, heavy on the sugar (nerds anyone?).
5. Soil yourself. But please, only as a last resort. *Warning: This may make you feel old instead of young*

So take some time this week to be young again. First, a story.

This past weekend I had a chance to do a bit of sugar experimenting of my own, with some friends an a plate of peeps. Nothing to unusal, just your standard microwaving fun. But let me tell you, it's pretty exciting. You go through several emotions. While loading the peeps in, you are first curious about what a microwave will actually do to them (and how it works). If you have Internet handy you can look it up, otherwise you can just guess. It's still fun. Next you start the mircowave and sadistically await the peeps destruction. For the first 20 or so seconds nothing happens, and you start getting disappointed, wondering if they are duds. Then they begin to expand and you are excited that it's working! They keep getting bigger and bigger and you start to feel panicked and want to open the microwave, but you resist. Finally you are proud of your peeps, rooting for them to get bigger and bigger, to survive longer and longer! *ding* Your minute is up and they've survived... well, they haven't exploded. You are now envious of your peeps, as they are so huge they should surely gain the right to their own bed. But what is this! The shinking begins and you are filled with a girlish giggle as they lose their masculinity (as if they ever had any). Eventually they are much smaller than when they began and you feel pitty and shame, as you responsible for destroying the future of these harmless peeps. Eventually this wear off and are bored of the peeps experiment. You walk away, distracted by thoughts of other things that can be microwaved. But that is not the end... Several hours later you happen upon the peeps again, now a harden mass with a few beaks poking out and you experience your final emotion: disgust.

Peep Research
Surprisingly similar to the bunnyocalypse from last week, but a much older site (I think I originally found this one while in college). Being older and more respected, it gets mention in legitimate news outlets, besides this one of course (CNN anyone?). This site takes a fairly scientific approach, but let's be honest, they're really just playing with marshmellow birds (chickens?).

Cadbury Egg Cake
Why just make a plain ol' cake when you can make a cake with Cadbury Cream Eggs! It's simple really, just replace the ordinary eggs in a cake recipe with Cadbury Creme Eggs. Some great images on this site of the cracking of the eggs and the resulting mess. I'm not to sure about the final product, it looks a little sketchy, but I think I'd be willing to give it a try... as long as it wasn't burnt. Man that would be nasty. I wonder if you could soft-boil a Cadbury Creme Egg? Hmmm....

Flaming Jello Shots
Wow. I mean, wow. This is probably one of the best uses of Jello Shots I've ever seen. The folks have managed to create very high alchol Jello Shots using some everclear. Now I would definitely not recommend eating these, as they will no doubt kick your ass. Seriously. But how fun would it be to make a bunch of these and just set them aflame? Sounds like a Burning Man project if I ever heard of one. Do you think different types of Jello would burn different colors? What exactly is the plural of Jello? Jellos? Jelloes? Jello? Who cares as long as it burns.

Alright, that's enough for now. Hope someone out there actually tries to create one of these (Gail, I'm looking at you)!

Snack-tastic!

Warning: this entry may make your teeth hurt!

In honor my trip to the dentist yesterday (just for a cleaning, thank you), today's entry will explore various snack/sweet related links I've found lately. While I do enjoy the occasional sweet treat, I'm not a huge sweets person. When I was a kid, I couldn't get enough, but now they just don't do it for me. Unless it's chocolate. I love chocolate. And Ice Cream, yum. We're getting off topic here...

Easturduckin (Thanks Hans!)
Based on the famous Turducken, a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken, this sweet treat manages to pack several levels of sweet enjoyment into one. Cadbury Cream Eggs, Peeps, and a chocolate bunny. You've got to see this to believe it. Eating one of these would no doubt result in a tummy ache at best. I don't even want to imagine what the worst would be.

Pimp My Snack
What's even better than your favorite snack food? Your favorite snack food at ten times it's original size! Features detailed directions on how to make mega-versions of various snack foods, including Rolo's, one of my favorites. I can't tell if those look really good or really disgusting. The list of pimped snacks is impressive!

Bunnyocalypse (Thanks Dave!)
Man, this guy sure hates peeps... and has found many ways to express his anger. But the good news is that this is very entertaining for us, his viewing public. He's added several more "methods" since I first was directed towards his site, so check back for updates. So I guess this isn't so much of a snack as a funny, peep related site. Close enough.

Peep Drinks
Strange, this post is becoming very peep heavy (peepy?). Maybe I should have called it Peep-tastic. Oh well, no going back now (well, I supposed I could, but I won't).
What better way to wash down all these sweet, sweet, items than with a sweet, sweet, drink. Yes, someone out there has invented drinks with peeps. Why? Who knows, probably on a bet of some sort. Are we happy about this? Maybe... it seems like a good use of peeps and maybe the only thing on this list I could consume without that many negative side effects. At least one would hope. What's really scary is the reference to their sister site, peepsluts.com. This isn't active at the time of this posting, so be careful when visiting as the contents are completely unknown to me...

Well there you have it, several snack-tastic sites. There are many others out there as well, but they'll have to wait for another day. Sorry it's been so long since I've udpated, but my week has been ultra-busy (thanks to work). Please keep the faith in my updates... I'm doing my best.

So I've been a member of MySpace for awhile now. If you haven't heard, it's the new friendster (not necessarly). I've noticed some odd occurances lately... spam. Or more accurately, MySpam. In the past month I've gotten at least 2 if not 3 times as many friend requests from completely stranges than from people I know. Folks that I have no idea how they are connected to me. I even got an offer to join a group that looked like it was just fishing for suckers, something about paying me to look at coupons and what not.

What's up with that? I've never had this problem with friendster and it's super annoying. I mean, is this someone I should know but don't or just someone trying to build out their friend list? Maybe it's got something to do with the fact that MySpace is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. Apparently I'm not alone in this.

But these social networking sites do have their advantages. I've also been contacted by several people that I haven't heard from in years (lots of years, like people I haven't seen since high school). It's pretty impressive when this happens, though sometimes is hard to know exactly what to say. "It's great to hear from you! How have the last 10 years of your life been?" But it does show how the Internet allows us to reconnect with long lost people in a way that would have been impossible in the not-so-distant past. Sort of makes you wonder where we'll be in the future.

I do miss the very first social networking site, which is long since dead: SixDegrees.com. It was a spectacular event and I really enjoy myself. Every corner of the Regency Center was filled with art and performance, and veritable feast for the mind and eyes. Stilt walkers, cabaret, music, dancing and more... including one of my favorites, General Fuzz (you can find a link to his music at the right). I was also fascinated by the people at the event, dressed everything from full, artist costumes to the casual jeans and t-shirts. There was fun to be had by all. I had an interesting conversation with someone while waiting in line for the loo that captured one my favorite things about the event (and about the Bay Area)... how everyone is an artist in some sense and people are encouraged to be a part of art, rather than just spectators. Yay for interactive art and performance!

My props go out to those that worked so hard to make this happen, and to thank them for such a wonderful evening (you know who you are). Or at least that's what Google says it wants to do. If you haven't heard already, Google and Earthlink will be bringing free WiFi to San Francisco. That's right, I said free. Now of course this free version of the WiFi service will require you to view a hefty amount of ads, but it is actually no cost (Earthlink is involved so that you can pay $20 for faster access).

There's a lot of interesting implications of this. With a laptop, you'll have access to the internet anywhere in the city. Other devices will become even more useful if they always have access to the net (Nintendo DS can play over WiFi, cameras are coming out that can instantly upload the pictures you take, etc...). But what's really great about this is that we are taking steps away from the wired world toward a wireless one. No more need to pay the telco's to maintain those line, no more monopoly on the market. I can see a world where all Internet is transmitted over the wireless airwaves and free to all (in some form). This seem to go hand in hand with the free information that the internet provides.

Of course there are disadvantages as well. Everything will be funneled through Google, which means they can ultimately decide what you do and do not see. Not to much of an issue at the moment (unless you live in China), but let's just hope they keep living by the mantra "Don't be evil". Let's hope for more freedom in the virtual world!

Viva la Internet!

Define: Habernation

Okay, so I just Googled myself.

Well, not really myself (which is something you should all try, both with and without the quotes), but my blog. Just to see if it comes up in a Google search (note: it does). Makes sense I guess since Google owns Blogger.

Anyways, what I found was that a lot of the results seem to be misspellings of the word 'hibernation,' which got me thinking a bit: what exactly does the title of this blog mean? Sure I've got my own definition of the word, to remain secret for the moment, but I'm curious what other people think.

Here's what I propose: create you own definition for the word "Habernation" in the comments of this post. I'll put up all the definitions, including the one that I already have, for a vote on the blog. Yes, that is correct, it's the Simpsons Movie Trailer, which aired during last nights episode of the Simpsons (apparently it's also attached to Ice Age 2, for those that want to see it).

I won't spoil the trailer, but as a former teacher of the Simpsons ExCo class at Oberlin (twice), I'll give you my thoughts on the upcoming movie (any of my co-teachers should feel free to comment as well). While I'm a little scared of the movie, wondering how our favorite family will make the transition to the big screen, I still have high hopes. Matt Groening has shown us time and again that he laughs in the face of pop culture (which is a bit ironic since the Simpsons are such a part of it) and has continued to deliver a fairly good show. Sure it was better in the "old days," but I still enjoy watching new episodes and can be guaranteed of at least one good laugh. That's much more than I can say for most of the other crap on TV. So I think there's good potential for the movie, I just hope they don't wuss out and go for a G rating. The advantage of going off TV is that it allows you to push the boundaries a bit more. So let's hope for some swearing and animated nudity! If nothing else, they can at least throw in a little bit of Mr. T.

Update: Fixed movie link, should work now (thanks Bryan!)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thehabe.blogspot.com/2006/04/mmm-simpsons-movie-trailer.html' title='Mmm... What you may not know is that Jill is someone that was from my hometown of Ann Arbor, MI, and even went to the same elementary, middle and high school as me. Heck, she lived down the street from me! Obviously I'm thrilled that Jill has been released and is unharmed. Here's to hoping to the best for Jill and her return to the states!

It's strange how much more real something becomes when it touches you this directly, whether it's the war or some other big event. For me this year involved two direct connections with the war: Jill, who I mentioned above and Army Staff Sgt. Curtis Howard II, a neighbor growing up who was recently the victim of a roadside bomb. It's difficult to have something thrust so much more front in center in this manner, but it's also makes me wonder what it must be like for those that are touched in even more ways. Those with losses of their family, those with lots of friends/family/coworkers that are part of the war in any form, those on the front lines... But I supposed there are also those moments of good, of Jill returning to her parents safe and healthy, of soldiers returning home, finished with their tour of duty.

Where is this post going? I have no idea. It must be a result of the cold/flu/fever I've been fighting for the last three days that has left my mind a bit messy (FYI, it kicked my ass). I'll end on a happy note, saying that I'm overjoyed that Jill is safe.

The $39 Experiment

Woo-wee! This site follows a fellow that spent $39 on 100 stamps and wrote 100 different companies trying to get free stuff. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's thought about this before (I think Mer and I were going to try it at one point in college), but his results are interesting. I won't spoil them for you here, so go and check out the site. He even has address labels printed up so you can try it yourself. As you can see from the previous posts, there's a lot of different things that pop-up on this site, most of it irrelevant and pointless. But a little somethin' for everyone.

For those few that have been with me for the trail run, thanks for your feedback. I hope I didn't pester you so much that it made your ears bleed. Or I guess that would be "make your fingers bleed" since we are in this virtual world of fun and excitement. Woo-hoo, virtual worlds!

Somehow it seem appropriate I'm launching on my mothers birthday...

This has been a geeky week for me, thanks to the GDC (Game Developers Conference for those not in the know). Today I'm at work, but yesterday and tomorrow I'll be down in San Jose meeting with other game developers/designers/artists/etc... about what goes into making games. It's impressive to see and much more in-depth than most expect. It takes a lot to make games today. The term "casual gaming" was thrown around a lot and for good reason. It's a portion of the game market that's growing quickly. "Casual games" are games that are quick, simple (to learn at least), and appealing to a wide audience. Some people call them games for moms, games for women 30+, games for non-gamers, etc... I like to think they are just fun, simple, stupid, and sometimes just strange, and therefore appeal to everyone's tetris side (the ultimate casual game).

Random Memory: I had my first gameboy and was totally addicted to tetris during one vocation, trying to beat level 9, height 5 (you get to see a rocket if you do). One morning I woke up and saw my step-father playing tetris, apparently for hours. I'd never imagine I'd see him with a gaming device, much less a gameboy. Sort of makes me curious if there will be a gaming device soon that appeals to a broad, new audience. Nintendo is certainly trying... and they may just do it.

Welcome once again! I like to invent things, in fact, I can't ever stop it from happening. I'd love to be able to follow through on them all, but I don't have the time, the money, or the know how. Some find this "quirky" and others find it "annoying." I've got no problems being an inventor and a dreamer, heck I love it. I just wish I had a friend in the patent office...

Something odd has been happening lately. My ideas have been becoming real products within weeks/months of me thinking of them. Unfortunately, not from me. No, it's not a case of "I saw it and just forget and then thought I came up with it," but something I actually thought of that was then created a short time later by someone else. Here are a few examples...

LED Nalgeen Lid:
I came up with this one while walking around the playa late one night at Burning Man. I realized that by shining my LED headlamp into my Nalgeen bottle I could use it as a lantern and be seen by others at night. Then I realized this could easily be built into the lid of the Nalgeen for a very low price. LED power consumption is very low, so the batteries would last for a long time.

A few months after this, I stumbled upon the Lightcap. Pretty much exactly what I had envisioned, and they are charging a ton for it. Damn it!

Water temperature Light:
Okay, so this is another LED based product, but it's what I was working with a bit last year. This idea came to me when I read about a faucet that had an LED on the bottom so you could see better while cleaning. Or something like that. I thought it was a bit useless. My idea was to change this light color based on the temperature of the water coming out of the faucet (red for hot, blue for cold). Imagine never getting into a shower that's too cold or having to test the water to see if it's warmed up yet.

Once again, someone beat me to the punch. Hansa has created the Temperature Sensitive Bathroom Fixtures, which pretty much do exactly what I described above.

There are other examples as well, but that's all you get for now. I suspect someone might be spying on me and stealing all my ideas. If it's you, oh reader, then stop! Or at least give me some of the cash... For now, the best ideas stay in my head.

Friends, Fun and Food

Last night I had a dinner at my house for several distant visiting friends. It's part of the Month Of Visitors, at least 7 folks by my count. It was excellent to see everyone and the food was yummy... I made my own version of Coconut Chicken Strips, and thought I'd post the recipe:

Co-co-coconut Chicken Strips
(6-8 servings)

Marinade:
* 2 c Coconut Milk
* 1 c Pineapple Juice
* 1/2 c Soy Sauce
* Sliced Ginger (to taste)
* 1/2 tsp salt
* 1/2 tsp pepper
* 1/2-1 tsp chili sauce (to taste, but be careful)
* Dash of cinnamon

Main Dish:
* 3 c Flake Coconut, unsweetened if you can find it
* 1 1/2 c flour (Panko probably would be better)
* 1 tsp salt
* 1 tsp black pepper
* 1/2 tsp garlic powder
* 2 lbs boneless skinless chicken, cut into 1-inch strips
* 3 eggs, lightly beaten
* 1/2 stick butter, melted

DIRECTIONS:

Cut the chicken into strips (or get Bobby the Butcher to do it for you)

Mix all marinade ingredients together in a large measuring cup

Place the chicken strips in large ziplock and cover with the marinade

Refrigerate 3-4 hours or overnight

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees F

Drain chicken and toss marinade, make sure to remove the ginger slices (they like to stick to the chicken).

Mix coconut, flour/panko, salt, pepper and garlic powder in a medium bowl. Dip the chicken into egg, then coat with coconut mixture. Use your hands and get them nice and covered, pressing slightly if necessary. Place on a baking sheet, and drizzle with melted butter when your ready to go.

Bake 25-35 minutes until chicken is done, turning once about half way through.

* It might be good to toast the coconut a little before you make the dipping mixure. Just spread it on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350 degree oven for about 5-10 min. Don't let it get to dark, since it will cook more when coating the chicken. Allow to cool before making mixure.

Serve with a good dipping sauce, I used an Apricot Chipotle Sauce I found at the store.

unfortunately I don't have any pictures, as they were gobbled up before I thought about it!

Hopefully more recipes to come in the future. Please comment if you'd tried these or want more posts like this. I ran into Ohio, a burning friend, who was really surprised that I was there. So we all become food snobs, at least to some extent.

But don't be fooled, there are still several things that are either impossible or really hard to find in San Francisco.

Buffalo Wings
Spicy, deep fried, and slather in the real deal sauce (usually based on Frank's Red Hot), real wings are hard to find, good ones even harder. Sure you can find some fake west coast wings, usually breaded and baked in a pizza oven. These are pretty good, but they're not the real thing. The biggest red flag: no blue cheese dressing on the side.
Good wings in SF: Original Buffalo Wings (nearest location now in San Bruno), NY Buffalo Wings, Kezar Pub

Corned Beef Sandwich
Fatty strips of cured beef slathered with mustard on rye bread. The best of the best I've had comes from Zingerman's, in Ann Arbor (though Katz's Deli in NYC is also great). I haven't found anything out here that comes even close to what I crave. There are some places you can go for an attempt, but it's like comparing a high school track meet to the Olympics.

Bagels
Bread boiled then baked, and I like mine onion or garlic (stinky!). To be fair, you CAN find good bagels in San Francisco, but you have to be careful. I've had plenty a hard, dense bagel out here. Nothing like in Boston or New York (or even Ann Arbor) where you can walk into just about any bagel shop and be confident you'll get a light, airy, tasty bagel. Even in the chain bagel places you'll get something pretty good. I can't believe some of the shops out here survive. They only thing their bagels are good for is hockey.

Rant, rant, rant. What can I say? I like food.

Here are two of my favorite food sites, both definitely bookmark worthy.
Yelp - http://www.yelp.com
Fud Court - http://www.fudcourt.com

Happy Pi Day!

Today is March, 13th (3/14), which is known by some as Pi day! So get out there and eat some Pi, or just calculate some pie. Mmmm... calculated pie...

It's also Albert Einstein's birthday! When I was a kid, Albert Einstein was one of my hero's. There are several reasons for this:
1. My brother liked him
2. He was a scientist (I liked science)
3. I may be related to someone that worked with him (Albert Michelson, a Nobel Prize Winner)
4. He's unique and nutty yet respected. What more could you strive for?

In honor of the father of physics, here are ten of my favorite Einstein quotes, in no particular order:

"Imagination is more important than knowledge."

"The only real valuable thing is intuition."

"Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one."

"I never think of the future. It comes soon enough."

"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new."

"Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal."

"The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing."

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe."

"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

"When you sit with a nice girl for two hours, it seems like two minutes. When you sit on a hot stove for two minutes, it seems like two hours that's relativity."

I did not expect this to become a post about Einstein. Maybe angry isn't the right word, but definitely a joker of some sort. Personally I find it sort of exciting, but make sure you remember your coat!

Today I got my red shoes back from the shoe smith. My favoritest pair of red shoes, some burgendy new balances. I couldn't find any new replacements that even came close to them, so instead I did a little revamp: new soles, new insoles, and new laces (sparkley ones no less). Makes me warm and fuzzy inside (or rather, on my feet).

Here's an old link I found of Odd Places in San Francisco.
