Frequently Asked Questions about the Build

Where is the Build Location?
23 Howe Drive, Kitchener (off Ottawa Street between Westmount and Fischer-Hallman)

What are the Build Hours?
8:00 am — 4:30 pm. Monday to Friday. REGISTRATION 7:45 am.

Who can participate?
Volunteers are required to participate a full day and must be 18 years of age or older to build and operated power tools and a at least 16 years old to be on site. Hospitality area (registration, food, tool management) tasks are available for volunteers between 16-18 years of age and individuals that prefer lighter work.

Where can I Park?
(In negations) Street parking is available. Please obey the signs. HFHWR is not responsible for stolen or damage done to your vehicle.

What time is Registration and the Safety Orientation?
To ensure that the entire group can start on time, please allow time for registration by arriving at the site at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the day. IMPORTANT, each day begins with a mandatory safety orientation, after which the group of volunteers is divided into work teams who are assigned to team leaders and given specific work assignments. Coffee and snacks are provided at the registration area. A souvenir t-shirt and personal safety equipment, including a CSA-approved hard hat, will also be provided to each volunteer at registration. All volunteers are required to sign out at the end of their shift. Clipboard is in the volunteer safety equipment shed.

What about Weather conditions?
RAIN or SUNSHINE - regardless of the weather, please show up for your shift. There's always work to be done.

What Clothing and Other Items should I Bring to the Site?
On the build site you must wear fully-enclosed green-patch CSA-approved footwear. A few selective sizes are also available on site. In the cooler months, layered clothing and a rain jacket are highly recommended. Shorts are allowed, but they must be knee-length. Bring a bandana/scarf to wear under your hard hat. You are welcome to bring your own work gloves, safety glasses, utility knife, pencil, hammer, and tool apron. However, this is not required, and Habitat will supply all the tools you will need throughout the day. Sunscreen (body, face and lips) is very highly recommended if you are working outside and is also available on site.

The Work Environment?
Come to the build site with an open mind and willing attitude. You will be working with other volunteers with varying skill levels. Please be patient. There are many jobs to be completed and every job is important. Your full cooperation and enthusiasm will ensure that everyone has a good day!

What about Breaks and Lunch?
The crew will break mid-morning and mid-afternoon for about 15 minutes. Snacks and a basic lunch are provided daily at the build site. Water, coffee, tea and pop are available all day. If you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions (vegetarian, allergies), we strongly recommend bringing your own lunch.

What about the Amenities?
FULL SERVICE WASHROOMS and RUNNING WATER on site; lunch under tent on picnic tables. Water and coffee/tea are available all day.

Is there First Aid?
First aid supplies are available at the registration area, kitchen and at the on-site build office. All injuries must be reported to staff and recorded in the injury log book.

What about my Valuables?
HFHWR is not responsible for lost or stolen items. When possible, we strongly advise leaving them at home.

Is there a Smoking Area?
It is restricted around the areas of construction, trailers and materials. Ask for designated smoking area.

-Please bring a prop if you can: hard hats, tool belts, hammers, shovels, tool boxes, etc.

-We will assemble on the main floor at noon and have the photo taken on the front steps (or indoors if the weather does not cooperate).

Message regarding our Habitat for Humanity Build

Everyone,

First of all, I would like to thank all of you who have helped out so far on the Habitat for Humanity build at Howe Drive! We have had some very enthusiastic volunteers who have come out to help several times and they have told me that they have enjoyed the experience. I touched base with Leonor to get the latest on their projected needs and I am including her email to me here.

"Everything is moving along just fine. The trades, mudders & tapers, are expected for the next 3 weeks. I look forward to fifteen Coldwell volunteers to resume on Monday Sep 27^th"

I sincerely hope we will have volunteers from our office to help out with the upcoming work that needs to be done. There will be painting and caulking and other finishing that needs to be completed in the two weeks following this break. It looks like they hope to have the home mostly completed by around October 8th. Summer vacation should be behind us and those of us who have children in school, should have them well on their way by then! Lets put our shoulders to the wheel and show Habitat for Humanity that we are a dedicated hard working group that follows through with enthusiasm!
