June 17 marks World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, a date established by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification to raise awareness of soil degradation and water scarcity in various regions of the world.

Desertification occurs when fertile land loses its productive capacity due to factors such as deforestation, inappropriate land use, climate change, and unsustainable agricultural practices. This phenomenon affects food security, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of millions of people.

The day promotes the restoration of degraded lands, the sustainable management of water resources, and the implementation of strategies to strengthen the resilience of communities to droughts.

A commitment that involves us all

The three environmental dates in June share a common message: protecting nature requires the participation of all of society. Caring for the oceans, conserving ecosystems, and using natural resources responsibly are essential actions to guarantee a sustainable future for generations to come.

The event, with free access for residents and visitors, could be seen from various observation points around Marina Puerto Cancún. The organizers highlight that the exhibition combined technology, creativity and entertainment in an unprecedented visual experience for the region.

The so-called “drone shows” have gained popularity in different parts of the world as a modern alternative to fireworks. Through advanced programming systems, hundreds or thousands of drones equipped with LED lights create figures, animations and messages in the night sky, also reducing environmental impact and noise pollution.

The choice of Marina Puerto Cancún as the headquarters responds to the relevance that this tourist and commercial complex has in the city, by combining entertainment spaces, gastronomy and recreational activities in a privileged environment facing the sea.

Beyond this historical interpretation, some scholars have pointed out that the eagle and the snake can also be understood as symbols linked to the pre-Hispanic worldview. The snake occupies a central place in numerous Mesoamerican cultures, especially through the figure of Quetzalcoatl, whose name means “feathered serpent.” This deity represented the union of the terrestrial and the celestial, knowledge, creation and order of the universe.

From this symbolic perspective, the eagle can be associated with the sky, the Sun and higher forces, while the snake represents the earth, fertility and ancestral wisdom. The interaction between both elements expresses the harmony of opposites and cosmic balance, a fundamental idea in Mesoamerican cosmogony. In this way, the National Coat of Arms not only remembers a historical event, but also reflects a vision of the world in which the human being is part of a universe ordered by the relationship between the forces of nature, heaven and earth.

For the ancient Maya, the universe moved in eternal circles. Everything returned to its origin: the rains, the seasons, the stars… and also the turtles. These ancient beings, which have inhabited the oceans since prehistoric times, symbolize wisdom, resilience, and the continuity of life.

The Call of Origin

After traveling thousands of kilometers across the open ocean, female sea turtles return to the exact beach where they were born to lay their eggs. Even today, science continues to study how they manage to orient themselves with such precision; one of the most widely accepted theories suggests they use the Earth’s magnetic field as a natural compass.

In Quintana Roo, between May and November, the beaches become silent stages for this extraordinary journey. During the night, the females slowly emerge from the sea, move across the sand, and, guided by an ancestral instinct, dig a nest where they lay around one hundred eggs before returning to the ocean.

But the turtles’ life cycle holds even more surprising mysteries. The male hatchlings will never set foot on land again; they will spend their entire lives in the open ocean, traveling among ocean currents and feeding grounds. The females, however, will return to the same beach years later to continue the cycle, and although the baby turtles are born completely alone, never knowing their parents, they carry within them a perfect biological memory that tells them where to go. As soon as they emerge from the nest, they follow the moon’s reflection on the sea and embark on a journey where only a few will manage to survive to adulthood.

A Bridge Between the Sea and Mayan Culture

In Mayan tradition, the turtle was linked to fertility, the earth, and rebirth. Some representations show the world emerging from a turtle’s shell, a symbol of the origin of life and the balance between water and land. It is no coincidence that this animal remains one of the great natural emblems of the Mexican Caribbean. Its presence reminds us that nature functions through precise cycles and that each species fulfills an essential role within the ecosystem.

Turtles help maintain healthy seagrass beds and coral reefs, which are fundamental to marine biodiversity. Furthermore, by nesting, they transport nutrients from the ocean to the beaches, enriching the sand and promoting other ecological processes.

Scientific Work at Turtle Camps

Behind every released turtle lies an enormous scientific and conservation effort. In Quintana Roo, turtle camps work each season to monitor beaches, protect nests, and increase the hatchlings’ chances of survival. Specialists patrol the beaches at night to identify nesting females and locate the nests. When a site is at risk due to erosion, flooding, or human activity, the eggs are carefully transferred to protected incubation pens where their development is monitored until hatching.

This work has been extended to the local population through the National Sea Turtle Conservation Program, which trains specific groups in the protection and management of nesting turtles and their hatchlings. In Cancún, this program is managed by the municipality’s General Management of Ecology. Sunset Royal Beach Resort has participated in the program since 2009: staff receive annual training to protect females during nesting, safeguard the eggs in pens, and assist with the hatching and release of the hatchlings into the sea. To date, they have recovered more than 161,000 eggs and released more than 125,000 sea turtle hatchlings, primarily of the green (Chelonia mydas) and loggerhead (Caretta caretta) species.

A Legacy We Must Protect

Each turtle that returns to Quintana Roo carries with it the memory of the ocean and millions of years of evolution. Its journey represents the persistence of life and the power of the natural cycles that the Maya deeply revered. Today, as environmental threats grow, from plastic pollution to climate change, protecting them has become a vital collective responsibility.

On the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean, under the same sky the ancient Maya gazed upon, the turtles continue to return, and with them comes the opportunity to remember that nature always finds its way back home.

It is worth remembering that the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor is one of the most important conservation initiatives on the continent. It is a regional strategy that seeks to connect natural ecosystems from southern Mexico to Panama, enabling the movement of species, the preservation of biodiversity, and the balance of the environments that sustain life.

The official inauguration took place on May 2nd, although the first vehicles didn’t begin traveling on the new roadway until May 6th, 2026, marking a turning point for thousands of residents and tourists who previously faced long traffic jams, especially during peak hours.

From very early in the morning, motorists began testing the new route that connects downtown Cancún with the Hotel Zone, crossing the Nichupté lagoon system. What used to take more than an hour on days with high tourist season is now reduced to just a few minutes thanks to this new road alternative.

A Project That Seemed Impossible

Construction of the bridge began in August 2022 with an ambitious goal: to complete it in just two years. However, as work progressed, engineers encountered a series of ecological, geological, and logistical challenges that forced them to rethink several stages of the project.

Building a structure on karst terrain and over water was already a complex challenge in itself, but one of the discoveries that most impacted the project was the finding of a huge underwater cavern with a 220 feet opening and a depth of nearly 427 feet.

Given this scenario, the original design had to be modified to incorporate an elevated section using a 330-feet-long self-supporting arch bridge, capable of spanning the cavern without compromising the structure’s stability or affecting the delicate subsoil of the region.

Engineering Over the Lagoon

The bridge consists of an elevated concrete viaduct supported by piles driven into the lagoon bed. During various stages of construction, the “Top Down” method was employed, a technique that allowed work to proceed from the top down to minimize the impact on the mangrove ecosystem and the Nichupté Lagoon.

The bridge is 11.8 km long, making it the longest in Mexico and the second longest in Latin America. It has three traffic lanes: two fixed and one reversible lane, which carries traffic from the city center to the Hotel Zone in the morning and vice versa in the afternoon, following typical traffic patterns. It also includes a bike path.

Safety Priority

The maximum speed limit is 37 miles per hour. Authorities also announced that access will be restricted to pedestrians, cargo vehicles, and motorcycles. Furthermore, when winds exceed 25 miles per hour, bicycle traffic will be temporarily suspended as a safety measure.

Environmental Compensation

One of the most debated issues during construction was the environmental impact. As part of the compensatory measures, 118 hectares of seagrass have already been restored within the Nichupté lagoon system.

The comprehensive project also includes the recovery and conservation of 300 hectares of mangrove forest, considered essential for protecting biodiversity and mitigating the effects of weather events in the region.

Ongoing Complementary Works

Although the bridge is already operational, complementary works are ongoing at the intersections with Boulevard Kukulcán in the Hotel Zone, as well as at the Pioneers Roundabout in downtown Cancún.

These connectivity works are scheduled for completion in October 2026 and aim to fully optimize traffic flow at both ends of the bridge.
