Instagram Hack Reveals The Risks Of Bug Bounty Programs

A security researcher who discovered vulnerabilities in an Instagram server apparently traded barbs this week with Instagram parent Facebook’s chief security officer over whether his explorations of the system’s weaknesses went beyond ethical limits.
Researcher Wesley Wineberg said in a blog post that, despite efforts to work within a Facebook bug bounty program that allows outside security researchers to investigate holes in Facebook systems, the company threatened him with legal action and even contacted the CEO of a company where he does contract work.
"If the company I worked for was not as understanding of security research I could have easily lost my job over this," Wineberg wrote.
In a Thursday post of his own, Facebook chief security officer Alex Stamos wrote that some action Wineberg took in downloading data accessible through the vulnerabilities "was not ethical behavior" and that contacting the company was essentially a last resort effort to make sure Wineberg didn't release potentially sensitive data.

"There was direct communication with Wes where we specifically asked him not to do this," Stamos wrote in a follow-up comment. "Finding somebody responsible who could mediate was the least aggressive of several possible next steps."
The episode seemed to highlight the potential complexities of bug bounty programs, the increasingly popular arrangements where tech companies offer rewards to outside researchers who discover and report security holes in their systems. Facebook alone has paid out millions of dollars through its program since 2011, and bug bounty programs are run by an industry-spanning list of companies from Google to United Airlines.
Wineberg—who has apparently successfully participated in other companies’ bug bounty programs—wrote that he sought to comply with Facebook’s bug bounty policies, which require participants to "make a good faith effort to avoid privacy violations, destruction of data, and interruption or degradation of our service."
But Facebook says that his explorations into company systems and downloads of proprietary data went beyond the program’s rules.
"We are strong advocates of the security researcher community and have built positive relationships with thousands of people through our bug bounty program," a Facebook spokesperson wrote in an email to Fast Company. "These interactions must include trust, however, and that includes reporting the details of bugs that are found and not using them to access private information in an unauthorized manner. In this case, the researcher intentionally withheld bugs and information from our team and went far beyond the guidelines of our program to pull private, non-user data from internal systems."

According to accounts by both Wineberg and Stamos, Wineberg initially discovered an Instagram server was running a Web-accessible administrative console with vulnerabilities that could let hackers run arbitrary commands on the machine. He reported the danger to Facebook, which ultimately offered him a $2,500 reward through the bounty program.
"Up to this point, everything Wes had done was appropriate, ethical, and in the scope of our program," wrote Stamos.
After reporting the security hole, Wineberg, who wasn’t immediately available for comment, wrote that he used the access it provided to search for additional weaknesses in the system. He found credentials for a database on the server and used those credentials to download usernames and encrypted passwords for a Web-accessible administrative tool running on the machine.
Using an open source password-cracking program on his own computer, Wineberg discovered that several of the passwords were "extremely weak"—some were the same as the account username, and some were common default passwords like "password" and "changeme." Wineberg reported the weak passwords to Facebook as well.
He also soon discovered a configuration file with access credentials for an account on Amazon’s Simple Storage Service, which he used to access what appeared to be a set of "deployment scripts" stored on the Amazon cloud system. He also downloaded an older stored version of the same data, which contained additional credentials letting him access other S3 repositories, known as buckets.
"There appeared to be a lot of potentially sensitive content, but a lot of it was just more versioned tar archives of tools and web applications," he wrote. "I queued up several buckets to download, and went to bed for the night."
Wineberg wrote that he avoided downloading what appeared to be user data, in an effort to comply with the bounty program’s privacy rules, but that he accessed a variety of apparently sensitive company data, ranging from Instagram source code to credentials for additional cloud services.
"To say that I had gained access to basically all of Instagram's secret key material would probably be a fair statement," he wrote. "With the keys I obtained, I could now easily impersonate Instagram, or impersonate any valid user or staff member."
According to his timeline, Wineberg didn’t immediately report the files he was able to access with the S3 credentials. While he discovered and tested the credentials on Oct. 24, he didn’t file a related report until Dec. 1— only after he says Facebook rejected his bug bounty claim relating to the weak passwords, citing a breach of user privacy.

"As a researcher on the Facebook program, the expectation is that you report a vulnerability as soon as you find it," Wineberg says Facebook told him in one email. "We discourage escalating or trying to escalate access as doing so might make your report ineligible for a bounty."
Wineberg argued those expectations aren’t in Facebook’s published bug bounty rules. Still, the rules do similarly ask researchers to "let us know right away" when a bug is found and "not interact with other accounts without the consent of their owners"—phrasing which seems designed with end user accounts in mind but might also apply to the employee accounts with weak passwords and Facebook’s own S3 accounts.
When Facebook filed a third report, with the leaked S3 credentials, Facebook appears to have taken it as a sign he was continuing to disregard their guidelines.
"The downloading of files from S3 was an unnecessary exfiltration and a violation of a warning we explicitly gave him," Stamos wrote. "I really didn't want him setting a precedent that you could download an arbitrary amount of data and call it legit."
Wineberg has since said he’s deleted the data, according to security publication Threatpost, and Facebook says it’s changed the S3 credentials.
One place where Wineberg and Stamos seem to agree: that the incident shouldn’t have a chilling effect on mutually beneficial relationship bug bounties have brought to security researchers and tech companies.
Facebook says it will take steps to respond to researchers’ reports quicker and make its guidelines more explicit.
"We successfully handle hundreds of reports per day, but I don't think we triaged the reports on this issue quickly enough," Stamos wrote. "We will also look at making our policies more explicit and will be working to make sure we are clearer about what we consider ethical behavior."

1st Method: Local Attack:

Things Required:

A Smart Phone.
A Laptop or PC within WiFi Range.
10Gm Uranium. :)
Physical Access to router.
Cleverness.

Procedure:-

Go to your neighbor's home.

Locate their router.

Behind the router there should be a 'WPS' button. As you got chance press the 'WPS' button to connect your phone to WiFi.

You can check on Google 'how to connect to WPS' for your phone.

If you are having Android Smart Phone go to settings-> WiFi-> Advance-> WPS.

As you complete the above steps your phone will be connected to the WiFi.

I know you are smart enough to complete the above steps, Just plan every step in advance.

In case you got coughed use that 10Gm Uranium. :p

Your phone is connected to WiFi but you still don't have the WiFi password. Now to get the password there are two methods, Long And Short.

Short One:

If you are using a Rooted Android then just open a root browser like 'ES File Manager' and go to 'System/data/misc/wifi' there will be a config file that contain the all saved WiFi passwords.

That is all.

If your phone is not rooted then you have to take the long method.

Long One:

Start Sharing the WiFi with a PC or Laptop using USB or Bluetooth.

Open any browser in your PC, Go to '192.168.1.1' If you don't see anything got to start->run type 'cmd' then in command promote type 'ipconfig' and copy gateway IP for your shared connection. Open that IP in your browser.

You should See the router login page.

Try to login to admin account using default or common passwords like 'admin','admin@123'.'adminadmin','password',etc. Search Google for default password for that router.

If you are lucky enough to get inside as in 90% cases, Now locate Security Settings, Which is usually in advance tab.

Look for Network password or Shared-Key. It is the WiFi password. If it hidden behind asterisk (Stars ****) Right click on page and go to View-Source. You should know basic HTML, now locate that password field and your password should be present in plane-text inside 'value=' or you may find it inside some java script on top or bottom of the page, just examine the whole page.

Raspberry Pi has been making small, affordable computer for a while now, but it’s just gone and made things insanely cheap. Its latest miniature computer, the Pi Zero, will cost just $5.

The miniature board—it measures just 65mm x 30mm x 5mm—is intended to make it even easier to provide people all around the world with their first steps into the world of coding. For $5 you might not be expecting much in the way of hardware, but the specs are actually fairly impressive. The board features:

A Broadcom BCM2835 application processor
1GHz ARM11 core
512MB of LPDDR2 SDRAM
A micro-SD card slot
A mini-HDMI socket for 1080p60 video output
Micro-USB sockets for data and power

The board runs Raspbian, and will happily let you use applications like Scratch, Minecraft and Sonic Pi. Or your own creations. Whatever.

In the U.S., the miniature computer will be available online from Adafruit and in-store at branches of Micro Center. Eben Upton, the founder of Raspberry Pi, writes that the company has “built several tens of thousands of units so far, and are building more, but we expect demand to outstrip supply for the next little while.”

This a Love Story of a Android User and ES File Explorer which I Found on XDA.

File managers are still a missing puzzle in a big Android ecosystem. We have Windows Explorer, The Finder and Nautilus or Nemo on our PCs, but Android still has no truly extensive file explorer included in the system.

I’m mostly referring to Nexus software here, which should be treated as a the matrix to all currently available firmwares created by various OEMs. Lack of proper file managers doesn’t mean that we are left with no options for useful management, though. There are numerous applications available on Play Store that can instantly become our first choice. But what should we choose in such a sea of options?

For many years the top choice was quite obvious. There was one king, or rather emperor, to rule them all: ES File Explorer. Users loved its simplicity, intuitive interface and what is even more for XDA users – root access and ability to open almost any type of file. ES File Explorer is still a complex solution to those of you who want to perform some easy file management or even more complicated stuff like modifying /system partition or adding some stuff to build.prop. If you were using this application for more than a couple of months you may have noticed that something terribly wrong is going on with one of your favorite applications. A company behind the app started to add some unnecessary features, which frankly speaking made it a bloated, resource hungry hog. Yep, you read it well – bloated. We all know what bloat means and how XDA hates it.

To show you the difference, I took a trip back to my Eclair days and downloaded an old version of the app dated somewhere in 2013. If you take a look at this forgotten beauty you won’t find material design, or even Holo. I know that Matias DuARTe is our lord and savior straight from Chile, and we should hail his name always and everywhere… but ES File Explorer wasn’t Holo-fied. It looked like MS-DOS – it was ugly yet extremely functional and worthy. Even today, the application is useful as it’s lightning fast, intuitive and uses just a few megabytes of RAM. Despite its age it’s still a good choice if you prefer functionality over look. Estrongs, a developer studio which created that piece of timeless software, had a wise strategy. Its goal was delivering an application that handles all the necessary tasks without being overly intrusive. The app never showed a pop-up or notification — it was always one tap away, ready to fulfill its duties. Even with the storage limitations of those days, it was one of the last applications one could do without — and we loved it for that.

The Holo and Material Design graphical paradigms forced developers to update the app’s UI. While an initial transformation went quite smoothly, the latest versions of the app starting from 4.0.0 are far from being fast and bloat-free. Estrongs decided to put the so called “recommended apps and games” which is essentially bloatware. ES File Explorer also has a cleaner look, which is quite useful, but something that simply doesn’t fit with a modern file manager. Menus are quite decent, but the application itself has become quite complicated due to a number of improperly implemented features. It appears that Estrong is trying to re-invent the wheel, which is always a bad idea.

I don’t like ES File Explorer anymore. I loved it in 2013 when it was so great, but recent changes had lead me to the conclusion that I have to find something different. An open source project which is simple, reliable and does not contain these pesky ads and recommendations that we see in the latest revisions of a once-great ES File Explorer.

Hackers Can Use Radio-waves to Control Your Smartphone From 16 Feet Away

What if your phone starts making calls, sending text messages and browsing Internet itself without even asking you?

No imaginations, because hackers can make this possible using your phone's personal assistant Siri or Google Now.

Security researchers have discovered a new hack that could allow hackers to make calls, send texts, browser a malware site, and do many more activities using your iOS or Android devices' personal assistant Siri or Google Now — without even speaking a single word.

A Group of researchers from French government agency ANSSI have discovered that a hacker can control Apple's Siri and Android's Google Now by remotely and silently transmitting radio commands from as far as 16 feet away...

...only if it also has a pair of headphones plugged into its jack.

How does the Hack Work?

It is very interesting and a mind-blowing technique.

The Hack utilizes:

An iPhone or Android handset with headphones plugged in
A radio transmitter

The radio transmitter sends radio waves to silently trigger voice commands on any iPhone or Android phone (with a pair of microphone-enabled headphones plugged in) that has Siri or Google Now enabled respectively.

Where the headphones’ cables act as radio antennas, which can be exploited to trick an iPhone or Android phone user into believing that the voice commands are coming from the user’s microphone.

This could leverage a hacker to do whole lots of things on victim's mobile phone without even speaking a word, including:

Make calls
Send text messages
Dial the hacker's number to turn victim's phone into an eavesdropping device
Browse to malware websites
Send phishing and spam messages using Facebook, Twitter or email

"You could imagine a bar or an airport where there are lots of people," Vincent Strubel, the director of the research group at ANSSI told Wired. "Sending out some electromagnetic waves could cause many smartphones to call a paid number and generate cash."

Dependencies:

The hack only requires:

A headphone-connected iPhone or Android phone
Siri enabled from the lockscreen — which is Apple's Default setting.

In its smallest form, this hack could be performed from a range of around six and a half feet.

A more powerful hack that ranges to more than 16 feet requires larger batteries and could only fit inside a car, the researchers say.

Internet Without Data Connection? Use Pangea With Data-Over-Voice

Life without internet is nearly unimaginable in the recent times. It is hardwired and deep-rooted into our daily life and routine. Everyone needs to access internet for myriad reasons, but the reality is that don’t all have access to it. As it is said where there is a problem, there are solutions to it as well. Same is true in this case.

Pangea has taken the initiative to get the unconnected people online by using a much familiar concept in a brand new way: sending and receiving data over infrastructure used to send voice calls. It should be noted that a promising startup named Outernet is already providing free internet in many parts of the world.

The idea may seem to be obsolete, yet it is much promising and far more intricate. Their method involves turning data into a sound wave, modifying it to a human voice to a Telco’s end, and then retrieving it back to data on the user’s device.
Every single time the user wants to send an email or check twitter, it will make a call (nearly 10 sec) and transfer the requested data at up to 64 kilobits per second. For now, Pangea is only available for text content but co-founder Vlad Iuhas said that over time, it will provide full android experience but it can be a bit slower.
To get access to internet through Pangea, one requires installing an app on the phone which is yet again problematic as the user has to use internet. The startup’s intermediate solution is to have an initial user in a city or town who downloads the app and then transfers it to the village residents via Bluetooth or such media.
The company is planning to open service in Nigeria this summer, working with one of the Africa’s largest wireless carriers. If that goes well, the company will deploy the service across the continents in near future.
They are surely aiming high as they aspire to connect each and everyone around the globe. The task is obviously not so easy, but living in a world brimming with possibilities and opportunities, everything is possible. Mark Zuckerberg said that liking a post about tragic news story or death is not a good idea,"Not every moment is a good moment, and sometimes you just want a way to express empathy," said Mark Zuckerberg.

“A like might not be the best way to express yourself.” said Chief Product Officer Chris Cox in a exclusive video which shows the new six buttons appear as emojis and pop ups when you long press the like button.

Facebook said that it would introduce this new feature in Spain and Ireland on Android, iOS and Desktop device. The feedback from this test will help in improving the new emoji feature on Facebook.

“As you can see, it’s not a ‘dislike’ button, though we hope it addresses the spirit of this request more broadly,” Cox wrote in his Facebook post. There was a debate on the internet about Facebook working on the dislike button if it could create negativity on the site and might cause cyber bullying. But Cox’s announcement was taken in a positive way and welcomed by people on the popular social media network.

Sanmay Ved, an ex-Google employee and current-Amazon employee, experienced something of a shock when he found that the world's largest search engine website, Google.com, was "available" for purchase.

What's Even More Shocking?

It's the cost of the most-trafficked domain in the world — Only $12.

Expecting to get an error message, Ved added the domain to his shopping cart and made payment. The entire purchasing process went through without any difficulty.

Within moments, his inbox and Google Webmaster Tools were flooded with webmaster related messages confirming his ownership for Google.com.

"The scary part was I had access to the webmaster controls for a minute," Ved said.

However, soon he received an order cancellation email and refund from Google Domains, as Google personally owns Google Domains, so it can still control all purchases made through it and revoke them if needed.

Google Forgot to Renew Ownership. Really?

It is still unclear what exactly happened – if it was due to a bug in Google Domains or the company really "forgot" to renew ownership of its address using its own domain service.

Whatever the reason, the experience of owning the search engine giant Google.com does indeed sound great.

Search giants Google has apologized after Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi photos appear in "Top 10 Criminals" image search results.

The issue went viral after internet users puts question over Google and asking reasons behind such results. Moreover, where users search for the "Top 10 Criminals" on Google Image search, its shows Narendra Modi image on the first of the search result.

Modi image was showing along with some of the terrorist, dictators and murderers. The other people included in the list were Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

On this matter Google said in a statement -

“We apologies for any confusion or misunderstanding this has caused. We’re continually working to improve our algorithms to prevent unexpected results like this.”

1:Create a new folder and copy exploit and shell to it.

2:Rename Shell to python executable.

How To Get Google AdSense Approval

Google AdSense is worlds best advertising network with best pay out rates. You can see 8 out of 10 website using Google AdSense to earn money from their website but now a days, getting approval for Google AdSense account is not as easy.

First Ready Your Blog Before Applying for Adsense :

Write High Quality Contents:

High Quality Contents mean original, clear and unique concerted content. Please keep in mind, Google AdSense doesn’t approve blogs with copy pasted copyright content. A well optimized blog post should be 100% unique and above 500-600 words. So, always write blog post above this limit and it must be unique which clearly determinate the post topic and your post topic keywords should be repeated in the post.

Write Frequently :

If you write frequently then Google will consider that your blog is active and will give you approval. Make sure you have enough content (at least 20 ) before applying to Google AdSense .

Don’t Have Google AdSense Prohibited Content:

According to Google AdSense policies , Sites with adult contents, copyrighted contents, drug alcohol related contents, hacking cracking contents, violent contents, weapons related contents and other illegal contents will not be approved. Please read Google AdSense Policies carefully before applying.

Make Proper About us, Contact us and Privacy policy page :

Be sure to Make proper About us page from where Google AdSense or your visitors can see information about you and your blog, a proper contact us page so that your readers can contact you and also a Privacy policy page which will tell the readers and the search engines about your Policies on how you collect information from them.

Install Google Analytics and Webmasters :

Google Webmasters are tools which help you to submit your site to Google index and manage it. Google Analytics shows you statics of your site. If you install these you will get a proper report on how your users engage with your website and Google AdSense also see this report and increases your changes for approval if you get good traffic ( Min 100 hits Daily).

Adding a Sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools:

Now login to Google Webmaster Tools and select your blog.
On the left click Crawl > Sitemaps > Add/Test Sitemap.
You’ll see your blog name and a text input box,

Enter sitemap.xml in the textbox.

Click on test button to check there is no error.
then click submit button and after sometime your posts will be submitted to Google's Index

Use Proper SEO Optimized Template :

SEO means Search Engine Optimization. It is an important step because how much blog is optimized is how much traffic you will get from search engines like Google . Use a highly optimized template to give good impact to users as well as Google. If you are using Google Blogger platform then you can use Alltechbuzz blogger or Elice template that is highly optimized and as well maintained.

Remove other ads from blog before applying for adsense:

If you are using ads of other companies like Infolinks, yahoo, bidvertiser etc then it is better to remove them. If you will remove them then there is more chance that Google AdSense will approve your blog and you can show ads on your blog. Once Google AdSense is approved then you can use ads like infolinks with Google AdSense (Not Recommended). But you will not get good rates as Google AdSense and it will also affect your user's experience.

Use Proper Information while applying

While applying to Google AdSense make sure you have entered proper infomation, Which means correct name, email address, your address, phone number, etc. In payee name fill the name of person who have proper national identity because the cheque will come with his name.
You can not change the information later about the payee name so be careful.
