Google had applied some changes to blogger blogs and their policies after SOPA and PIPA problems arose so what the thing was done that all your Blogger Blogs were redirected according to your country so if you are from India and your blog was something like xxxxx.blogspot.com and
now if people come to your blog from India they will be redirected to your another blog that’s xxxxx.blogspot.in.

Unofficial Android Stores Distribute Angry Birds Space Malware [Updates]

Malware has infected Google Android devices after users downloaded rogue versions of Angry Birds Space, mostly found in unofficial Android app stores. The malware is taking advantage of the popularity of the new version of the wildly successful Angry Birds game.
The official “Angry Birds Space” in the Google Play Store (previously known as the Android Market) is not affected. Malware was only found in versions released on unofficial Android app stores.

SophosLabs uncovered the malware Andr/KongFu-L, which appears to be a regular version of the Angry Birds Space game. The trojan uses the GingerBreak exploit to get root access, then connects to a remote website to download and install malicious code.

Once infected, the Android device is essentially part of a botnet. The device can be instructed to download further code or to display certain URLs in the browser.

The malware is hidden away in the form of two ELF files inside a JPG file. In all other respects, the rogue Angry Birds Space software resembles the authentic game.

Users of unofficial Android app stores should remain wary of applications they download. If in doubt, refer to the Google Play store in order ensure you find the original software.

How To Modify .apk Files

The extension Google uses for Android applications (APK) may seem a bit complicated at first, but it really isn't. In fact, an .apk is nothing else than a .zip file disguised as an .apk. That's dumbing it down, but you get it. Essentially, if one wanted to see what's inside an app, they would just change the extension of

applicationname.apk to applicationname.zip, unzip it. And there you have it: The contents of the .apk! We aren't done yet, read more after the break.

Here is where it gets tricky. Inside the folder where you unzipped the contents of the application, you'll find a file named classes.dex. That's the most
important file of the whole application, containing all the java files, but it's encrypted! No worries, that can easily be solved. You'll need two things:

Dex2Jar from http://code.google.com/p/dex2jar/
A regular Java decompiler, such as JD from http://java.decompiler.free.fr

Copy classes.dex to the folder where you unzipped Dex2Jar, and run from the commandline: "dex2jar.bat classes.dex"

This will produce a file, strangely named something like: "classes.dex.dex2jar.jar" If you have WinRAR installed, you can just unpack the files. If you don't, install it.

How to Delete Undeletable Files

Are you come across in a situation when you want to delete some unwanted file in your system and it shows a warning message that you cant delete this file? If yes, and if you want to get rid of these kind of situation then here are tips for you, just follow them:

1). Close all running applications.

2). Go to Run and type Cmd and press enter(it will open command prompt window).

3). Press Ctrl + Alt + delete and click on Start task manager.

4). Now in windows task manager, Go to Process tab.

5). In processes list, Highlight explorer.exe and click on End Process.

It will close explorer user interface(GUI).

6). Do not close task manager window leave it open, Now you should have two windows open 1 is command prompt other is task manager.

7). In cmd change directory to the directory which contains that undeletable file.

8). Now write Del filename and press Enter.

filename is name of undeletable file. For example here i wrote a.txt, it will delete file a.txt.

9). File is deleted now.

10). In task manager, Go to file and click on New task.

11). In new task dialog box, write explorer.exe and press enter.

12). Close cmd and task manager

Its done.

File is deleted.

10 steps to more useful and secure USB pen drive

USB thumb drives are one of the most commonly used ways to transfer data if you happen to work across multiple computers. Lets just make the USB drives prettier, useful and secure.

1. Add icons and labels to your drive.

Download an icon you would want to see appear when you plug in your thumb(pen) drive. Place the icon at the root of the drive. Next open notepad and type the following:

icon = "yourIcon.ico"

Save the file onto the root of your thumb drive and name it "autorun.inf", be sure to put the quotes or else it will be saved as a text file. Now Safely remove your USB drive and plug back in, the icon and name should appear in Windows Explorer if your did everything right. You can also automatically launch an application. If this is not the way you prefer to work use this neat application to generate the autorun.inf file automatically

2. Add a Start Menu to your USB drive

Download and install the Portable Apps Suite on your USB drive, it not only gives you a nice start menu for your USB drive but also gives you the ability to run some of the most popular applications (like Firefox, Putty, OpenOffice, SumatraPDF, notepad++ and many more) right from your USB drive. A must have for your USB drive

3. Use Mojopac

Mojopac gives you your operating environment right on your USB drive. You can be rest assured that you will find a familiar interface with Mojopac on any pc you plug your USB drive into, all the customization will be preserved from computer to computer. Moreover it lets you operate without leaving any trace what so ever on the computer, so you can be rest assured about your privacy and data

4. Write Protect your Drive

My USB drive has a write protect notch that prevents it from being written onto when plugged on a computer, this is important because if the computer you are plugging into is infected than it can readily infect your USB drive. However if your drive cannot be write protected then you can use thumbscrew. It makes anything connected to the USB non writeable until you are sure and want to make it writeable.

5. Make Autorun.inf read only and system file

Thumbscrew may prevent writing on USB devices but it has to be already present on the computer you want to plug your USB drive into, so if its not possible for one reason or the other then you should make sure that you have a custom autorun.inf file and that its read only and has the system file attribute set. This prevents malicious code from writing entries to your autorun.inf and thus even if your USB drive may have a virus it won’t actually run it automatically. So a little bit more protection but not fool proof by any means.

6. Hold down the shift key

If you suspect your USB drive may be infected but still you have to plug it in to scan and remove the infections, then when you plug it in hold down the shift key to prevent autorun if its not already disabled.

7. Encrypt your drive using Truecrypt

You can encrypt all the data on your USB drive using Truecrypt. This fives you added security if you have some sensitive data on your USB drive. Simply run it and choose your USB device to encrypt. TrueCrypt is free, Open Source and efficient and gives you extra security, download it here.

8. Sync your drive.

Microsoft offers an excellent application specially to address all your syncing needs. Its called the SyncToy. If you have to work on the same files on two different computers than you want to have the latest version of all files all the time, this can be easily done with synctoy. It offers both oneway and twoway synching. Its also free to download. Download it here

9. Backup your drive

Backing up is always a nice thing to do, specially when you have to use it on different computers. There is a portable app to make this very easy. Its toucan, you can install it on your USB drive and back up, sync and encrypt your data as and when you want. Or else there is this the USB Image Tool that creates an image of everything you have on your drive and saves it as one file.

10. Make it bootable

Just as you have one heart, and one brain, your Windows installation comes with but one desktop. Sure, you can change the look of this digital meeting space by applying new wallpapers, or adding sidebars and widgets, or letting Windows 7 do all that automatic stuff that it does every ten minutes or so. But...

that's not really changing the desktop per se--at the end of the day, you're still blessed (or cursed) with the same ol' functionality that's been a staple of the Windows platform since its inception.

That's about to change.
There are quite a number of tools out there for stretching the core functionality of your desktop in new directions. Some of these third-party replacements keep your standard setup and add a unique extension--like a 360-degree wallpaper that you can scroll through with mouse gestures. Fun stuff, huh? Other tools are a bit more comprehensive in their objectives, allowing for a total retrofit of very core of your desktop's operation. In these cases, gone are the typical organizational structures, options, and extensions you can pack into a Windows desktop--it's all brand-new and editable in ways you might have never previously thought were possible.

The best way to really get a feel for what's out there is to see it in action. So we're going to take a look at three unique desktop enhancement tools--one 3D, one shell replacement, and one widget-based service--and see just how they stack up versus the usability of the trusty Windows setup we've all come to know and love (or hate.)

BumpTop

We'll start our trip down desktop-replacement name with one of the bigger transformations you can make. The desktop is, after all, a two-dimensional experience. Whatever you do is confined to a flat surface on your screen--one single plane for creating shortcuts, moving files, or what-have-you. BumpTop breaks the fourth wall of the desktop and invites you into a new experience that's completely three-dimensional.

Don't break out the goofy glasses just yet. The effect is obviously a three-dimensional cube rendered on your two-dimensional monitor. Still, it's a unique replacement to the traditional Windows desktop that interfaces perfectly with its predecessor: any file commands you make in one will be reflected on the other, and quitting out of BumpTop (if the extra dimension is just too much to handle) returns you to your normal Windows environment without issue.

PROS:

Reactivity: Like a team of hockey players, your icons will go sailing around the desktop at the slightest touch or toss from your mouse. They'll slam into other icons and jostle them around, and bounce up against the sides of BumpTop's cubic desktop as if they missed a body check. It's a simple tweak, but it does much to liven up your desktop compared to Windows' default setup.

Gestures: Provided your input device supports it (a standard mouse does not), BumpTop reacts to gesture-based controls like a tweaked-out version of Apple's iPhone (or similar touch-friendly device). Pinch and pull your BumpTop elements to control their size, shove icons out of the way with the side of your finger, and flick through stacked icons as if you were flipping pages on a moleskin notebook, amongst other activities.

New Organization: Not only do you have access to Windows' default right-click menus with a simple ctrl+click in Bumptop, but you can also use the program's enhanced organizational tools--like lasso-selection, icon piles, and folderizing features--to bring even more control and clarity to your desktop use.

Social Support: Built-in canvases not only give you a rotating display for your system's pictures (or online picture feeds), but you can also integrate Facebook, Twitter, and email updates directly into the walls of your 3D display. Who needs RSS when you have dynamic picture frames?

CONS:

Widgets: It's not that BumpTop doesn't support third-party widgets. Rather, there's no direct online community--accessible through Bumptop itself--for building more functionality into your 3D display. You can always hunt around on the Internet to find more widgets and themes... but why should you?
Lasso Selection: I get how to select files and icons on the main display. However, to use the integrated Lasso tool to select elements on your desktop's vertical walls, you... well. You can't do anything--lasso only works with elements on your flat, traditional desktop within BumpTop.

Not Really 3D: I get it. BumpTop creates 3D walls for you to pin various desktop elements on. But it's not as if the program is making Doom-style sprites to simulate the illusion of depth. No matter how much you shift the camera around, the icons on the "desktop" portion of your Bumptop Cube will always appear as flat as Stanley--not a very convincing 3D experience.

Pesky Integration: BumpTop does its best to switch over to Windows Explorer for elements it just can't handle--like dealing with a large number of files in a List view-type format. That said, not only do typical Windows shortcuts (Windows key+e) not work in Bumptop, but it just feels a little silly to be constantly switching between Windows Explorer for some uses and BumpTop for others. That's not much of a desktop replacement, as it were--why can't BumpTop just slap some three-dimensional effects on a giant list view?

Ophcra*k is based on Slackware, and uses rainbow tables to solve passwords up to 14 characters in length. The time required to solve a password? Generally 10 seconds. The expertise needed? None.

Simply download the Ophcra*k ISO and burn it to a CD (or load it onto a USB drive via UNetbootin). Insert the CD into a machine you would like to gain access to, then press and hold the power button until the computer shuts down. Turn the computer back on and enter BIOS at startup. Change the boot sequence to CD before HDD, then save and exit.

The computer will restart and Ophcra*k will be loaded. Sit back and watch as it does all the work for your. Write down the password it gives you, remove the disc, restart the computer, and log in as if it were you own machine.

Note: Before editing the registry, please take a back up of it. It is quite simple and can be done by clicking file > Export in registry editor menu and putting the file name of the backup and clicking on save.

Click on Start and Type regedit in the search box and hit Ente.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER >> Control Panel >> Desktop
Look at the right pane to locate the key WaitToKillAppTimeout, double click on it and change the value to something between 4000 and 5000. (Lesser the value more quicker will be shutdown, the value is in milliseconds).
Click on Ok and the settings will be saved.

The key WaitToKillAppTimeout determines how long the system waits for user processes to end after the user attempts to log off or to shut down. When the time specified in this entry expires, the End Task dialog box appears, stating that the process did not respond. So now we need to do some tweak so that end task dialog box will not appear. Right? The key responsible for this is AutoEndTasks.

In registry editor Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER >> Control Panel >> Desktop

Look for AutoEndTasks key in the right pane and double click on it. The default value will be 0, change it to 1. Click on OK. This will not display the end task dialog box.

For Vista Users:

The key WaitToKillAppTimeout is replaced by WaitToKillServiceTimeout in Vista and the location has also changed.

In Vista navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl
In right pane, look for WaitToKillServiceTimeout and double click on it. Change the value to around 5000. Click on OK.

Test your shutdown speed now and let me know if it really become quicker.

Sooner or later, a social networking site for video blogging is going to be as popular as Twitter and Facebook. With more and more people owning cellphone video cams, it makes sense to shoot and post a quick video to your friends and followers.Well, it looks like a fairly new iPhone and Android
app named Socialcam might very well become the Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram of video sharing on the net.

How It Works

Socialcam has some advantages over the previous and similar video sharing sites in that there’s no limitation to the length of videos and storage of content. You can also share existing videos from your video library.

As with Twitter and Facebook, your posted videos become part of your Socialcam stream that your followers and the general public can view. You can also set videos to be viewed privately or only by your followers, and of course your video stream can be linked or posted to your other social networking sites, including YouTube, Tumblr, Posterous, and even to your Dropbox account. You can also send via SMS.

How to Shoot Videos

If you know how to use the videocam on your iPhone or Android, you’re set to go on Socialcam. After you set up an account, via Facebook or your email account, you simply shoot your video – typically using the front facing camera of your smartphone.

Socialcam will recommend a handful of very popular Socialcamers whose posts demonstrate how easy it is to shoot a video about whatever is on your mind. Celebrities like MC Hammer, Soulja Boy, Carl Thomas, Shira Lazar, The Roxie, and TMZ already have a huge following and collection of posted videos. But don’t think you have to be a celebrity to post on Socialcam. Most ordinary cammers share about their personal day and activities.

Themes & Filters

Another little cute feature for Socialcam videos are the app’s themes and soundtracks. When you’re done shooting your video, you can add one of about twelve introduction themes to your production.

I’ve been using the Journal theme, which is great if you plan to use Socialcam for vlogging. Other themes add a centered title or subtitle to your production. You can test out the theme before applying it to your video.

Socialcam also has a nice assortment of background soundtracks for different occasions – from action to more melodious sounds. Not everyone uses them, but I find they make videos easier to listen to. Fortunately, you can also preview your video (and change the theme or soundtrack) before posting to your stream.

You can change the title and privacy settings of video posts at any time by tapping the Info button at the bottom of a post, and then tap the gear button at the top. This is also the same area for sharing to other websites.

It takes a few minutes for videos to post to your public stream, but it’s all done in the background, so you can check out other videos or open other apps while your video is being uploaded. You’re notified when the upload is complete.

Getting Viewers

Of course most people share videos online so they can be seen. If you already have an extensive social network following, Socialcam makes it dead simple to invite your followers to view your posts on Socialcam.

If you don’t have many contacts and you’re looking to build a following on Socialcam, I suggest you tap the Popular button in the bottom menu on Socialcam. From there, tap on theTrending button, and then check out the dozen or so trending topics of interests. This is a good way to discover Socialcamers beyond the celebrities or popular posters.

If you don’t see a topic of interest, start your own. I noticed one topic called the “#coffeecrew” consisting Socialcamers who like coffee. This gave me the idea to start a “jazzcrew” for jazz lovers.

When you produce a video, use the title space to add your tags. Unfortunately there’s not a special entry for tags separate from the title.

Just as you do on Twitter and Facebook, you can also attract followers by simply following other members and leaving comments. You can set up your Socialcam account to automatically link to your social networking sites. As you begin to add friends, you can specifically tag them to let them know you’ve posted a video, particularly if you mentioned their name in it. Even after you post a video, you can simply tap the tiny Info button, selectFriends > Tag Friends, and tap the names you want to tag. The same can be done for Facebook friends.

Will Socialcam catch on like Instagram or Twitter? It’s hard to tell. I personally find the site a little addictive, and that may be a problem, because watching videos is more time consuming than viewing a stream of photos or reading tweets. But I think once you get active on Socialcam, it can become a great way to befriend like-minded people. Or if you don’t care much about building a following, Socialcam can become your personal vlog or video journal.

Not having to reach for your mouse to do the most routine task is one huge benefit I enjoy every day. That’s because I’ve memorized my list of Windows 7 keyboard shortcuts, and I use applications likeFingertips...

Though there have been so many changes to the perspective of personal computing since Windows 7 was dropped, Windows 8 did a good job in recognizing that these are important and they’ve actually extended the list of keyboard shortcuts available to their users. With “touch hardware” becoming the new thing, it comes a little unexpected.

On a post on the Windows Experience Blog earlier in the month of March, Microsoft snuck in a huge list of their new keyboard shortcuts near their closing. The new keyboard shortcuts allow you to not only perform monotonous tasks that you’d be otherwise doing by cursor (such as minimizing all open Windows), but also effects like switching to the classic Windows desktop (which I’ll be doing right away).

The team put together a nice, large image file that outlines the extent of their new shortcuts.Click on the image to bring up an enlarged view, as the thumbnail alone won’t do you any good.

Use Your Smartphone As An Instrument & Create Beautiful Audioscapes With NodeBeat

Confession: I have always wanted to play a musical instrument. Somehow, it never happened; I could never find the time, or the instrument, or some other excuse would come up. So for me, musicians have remained somewhat magical people, folks who can understand a language I can only hear. Because of
this, I am always intrigued by musical “toys” – doodads and gadgets that lets you play with sound in interesting ways, to capture some of the experience of playing an instrument.

NodeBeat is an application available both forAndroid and iOS (both iPhone and iPad). Like many apps, it is free for Android but costs $1.99 for iPhone and $3.99 for iPad. For this reason (and because I have an Android device) I will be reviewing the free and lovely version for Android.

Sounds & Images Collide

Above you can see what NodeBeat looks like when it’s in the middle of playing an intricate tune. Large round nodes, known as Octave Generators, emit pulses of energy. These pulses travel along the thin lines as dots, until they hit the smaller nodes – individual notes. When a pulse of energy hits a note, the note makes a sound. Notes are played in sequence, based on their distance from the generator.

So, for example, in this included example layout, rising nodes are played one after the other:

As you can see in the palette along the left edge of the screen, Octave Generators are not the only generators available: There is a square generator, called a Beat Generator. Swapping out the Octave Generator from the screenshot above with a Beat Generator turns this simple arrangement of notes into a percussion beat:

The fuzzy edges you see in the screenshots are notes pulsating as energy hits them and they sound off. And now, if I want to add some complexity but keep things in harmony, I can use those same notes with more generators:

So now, my layout still only has the same nine basic notes it had in the beginning, but they are played by three different generators, all synchronized to the same basic rhythm. And I can control that rhythm, as well as other properties of the sound, such as the waveform NodeBeat uses:

Any changes I make in this dialog are applied on-the-fly. So, for example, if I pick a more “square” waveform, I can instantly hear what it does to the sound (makes it more “electronic”). The instant nature of the changes means you can use this dialog not just to tweak “permanent” settings, but also as part of your composition: You can have a loop play in the background, and then go into the Audio dialog and change its key or lowest octave for a few iterations, and then change it back to what it was before.

The Audio dialog also lets you control other sound properties:

These sliders all have very technical names, but because they are applied instantly, they offer a great way to learn what all of these complicated terms mean (“Echo” is simple, but how many non-musicians understand “Decay” and “Attack”?). Just play with each slider at a time, and you will gain a clear understand of what they do.

Last but not least in this dialog is the “Background keyboard” setting, which does something very cool. It lets you use the rest of the screen as a keyboard, while your composition plays.

Node Movement

One very important feature I can’t capture in a screenshot is node movement. Even the most beautiful static loop can get boring after a while; but what if the nodes floated around, interacting with each other in new and surprising ways? In NodeBeat, you can have just the generators move around, capturing different notes and playing them. Or you could have the notes move around, entering the impact fields of the generators and making sounds as they float by.

Or you could have both nodes and generators move, and even add gravity, and control the speed and the size of the field. This means you can lay out a few cool notes on the field, and then just let them start moving around and see what happens.

Premade Layouts

NodeBeat comes with seven readymade layouts that you can load to get a sense of what the application can do. You can also save your own layouts, as well as record the audio and share it with friends. NodeBeat produces WAV files, which are large, but my recording sounded excellent on the pair of powered studio monitors I use as computer speakers.

1. I cannot connect to my router. How do I resolve this?
This is a wide-open problem with an almost limitless range of causes and solutions, but here are several actions that might do the trick. First, make sure your router is configured for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
If it is, try disabling and re-enabling the DHCP function.If that doesn't work, disable wireless security and see if you get a connection; sometimes a mismatched Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) key can drop the IP address. You should also check for electrical interference from competing devices such as cordless phones, baby monitors, alarm systems, and microwave ovens. Disable all suspect devices, then recheck your Wi-Fi connection. If all else fails, reboot the router and all computers on your network.

2. What steps should I take to secure my Wi-Fi network?

Routers typically offer at least two common forms of security: WEP, and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) encryption. Both are easy to enable, although you'll get maximum protection from WPA. To activate security, go to your router's browser-based administration tool (the default address for most routers is http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1) and look for the wireless security area. WPA requires you to enter a simple security phrase (eight to 63 characters), or, with some routers, a more secure (but much harder to remember) 64-digit key. Similarly, WEP demands that you choose from 64-bit or 128-bit encryption, and enter an alphanumeric hex phrase, with some routers giving you the option to enter a simpler ASCII phrase. In addition to enabling wireless security, you can also disable the broadcasting of the Service Set Identifier (SSID, or network name). Doing so can make the network more difficult for hackers to see. Also, make sure to enable the router's hardware firewall (more on that later), and change the router's default password. And do not enable file sharing, unless you really use it. This will safeguard your personal files from interlopers.

3. How do I open ports on my router?

Certain functions and applications -- personal Web servers, IP Webcams, home FTP servers, and online games -- require that you open ports on your router to allow outside requests to be sent to an internal computer on a home network. This procedure, called port forwarding, is pretty straightforward. First, you'll need to find out which ports you need to open for your particular application or service. Then, you'll open those ports on the router. All models vary slightly, but the process is similar. Open your router's configuration tool, and find a tab labeled Port Forwarding. Enter the service or software name, then type the Start Port and End Port numbers. If you're opening one port, enter the same number in both fields. Select TCP as the protocol, then click OK. 4. How do I extend the range of my wireless signal?

Improving a wireless signal is an inexact science that's part voodoo, part trial and error. No two homes are alike, and no two solutions will work for everyone, but here are some common guidelines. First, position your antenna on a high perch clear of obstructions. (The wireless signal radiates down.) Keep in mind that certain things will interfere with the signal: Objects with high water content, metal, and dense building materials such as brick, stucco, and concrete. So avoid blocks of liquid (fish tanks and water coolers), and metal pipes and construction.

If antenna positioning doesn't help, you can get an extender (or "repeater"), such as the Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander WRE54G. Devices like this will boost your range from 50 to 75ft, but they can be tricky because they require setup and configuration. A somewhat easier (if visually less elegant) approach is Wireless Garden's Super Cantenna. This tripod-mounted, high-gain antenna connects to your router and can be pointed at a specific area to amplify the signal. It's easy to set up, but it ain't pretty.

5. How do I automatically connect to a Wi-Fi network without having to manually connect the first time?

If you just want to connect fast to any available network, you can set your notebook to do so automatically. Go to Control Panel > Network Connections and right-click your current wireless network. Then click Properties > Wireless Networks > Advanced. Make sure the radio button next to "Any available network (access point preferred)" is on, then check the box "Automatically connect to non-preferred networks."

6. Which wireless channel should I use?

Wireless 802.11b and 802.11g routers have at least 11 channels, and most routers come set to channel 6 as the default. If you experience interference -- from a neighbor's router, for instance -- you can change your channel to solve the problem. Channels 1, 6, and 11 are non-overlapping channels; other channels overlap a bit. So if your neighbor's network uses channel 6, change your router to 1 or 11. You'll typically find channel settings on the router's basic wireless settings page. Just click the drop-down menu and select an alternate channel, then save the settings.

7. How do I share files on a wireless network?

First, you'll need to set up a workgroup and make sure that all PCs are assigned to the same workgroup. Next, enable file sharing in Windows. First, right-click on the folder you want to share, choose Sharing and Security from the right-click context menu, then click the Sharing tab. Put checks in the boxes labeled "Share this folder on a network" and "Allow network users to change my files" to enable others to modify the documents. Finally, click OK.

8. Should I allow other people to access my Wi-Fi service? What are the dangers?

Some users see no harm in sharing the Wi-Fi love, giving neighbors and even total strangers free access to the Internet. Others maintain that piggybacking can open their networks to potential danger. In Australia with download (and sometimes upload) quotas on most internet connections, if your wireless network has access to the internet this could result in excessive fees as unauthorised parties use your connection. The decision is yours, but if you choose not to encrypt, make sure to disable file sharing and invest some time into configuring a firewall. If you want to determine whether others are using your unsecured network, most routers have a page that lists all the wireless clients currently connected.

Most people, however, are not comfortable with the idea of allowing just anyone to use their wireless service. In theory, the practice can make your network vulnerable to hackers, since anyone who uses your wireless signal is on your home network. Malevolent users, for instance, could release nasty viruses or hijack your PC, let alone rack up your internet bill. That's not terribly likely, but you should avoid the possibility by using WPA to protect yourself and keep others off your network.

9. Should I worry about packet sniffers grabbing my information when I browse the Web at public hotspots?

Yes, you should at least consider this possibility, although whether you do anything about it depends on the sensitivity of your data and your level of paranoia. Anyone can install packet-sniffing software that will enable him or her to eavesdrop on what you do at a public hotspot. These snoops can read your emails and see what Web sites you visit, but they will not have access to the files on your laptop, unless you have file sharing enabled. Also, they cannot see any messages or Web pages sent over the secure server connections typically used by banks and e-commerce sites (look for https:// in the URL).

If you use a VPN to access your corporate network, you can use it at hotspots to encrypt all transmissions and shield them from packet sniffers. If you don't have a corporate VPN but frequently use public hotspots, you might consider a consumer VPN service.

10. What is a hardware firewall? If my router has one, do I need to run the Windows firewall or other third-party firewall software?

Most wireless routers have a hardware firewall that safeguards the network by providing both incoming and outgoing protection. A hardware firewall will include network address translation (NAT) capabilities that make your PC invisible to anyone trying to attack it. If you enable the hardware firewall, you probably don't need a third-party software firewall. You should still run the Windows firewall, however, because it keeps a low profile and will stop basic worms if your PC gets hit by a drive-by downloader.

Bump Pay Lets You Transfer Money To Friends With A Bump [Updates]

Bump, the popular sharing app for Android and iOS, has sprung a baby brother in the form of Bump Pay. With Bump Pay, instead of sharing photos and contacts, you can share money. Simply enter the required amount and bump phones with your friend.
The money will be transferred from your PayPal account into your friend’s account.

Bump Pay is currently available only on iOS, and can be downloaded as a standalone app fromiTunes. It is currently not a feature in the regular Bump app, but rather a Bump Labs project, which is aimed at testing exciting new features for Bump before they are incorporated into the actual app.

In order to use Bump Pay, both parties need to own a PayPal account. Bump Pay lets you choose between two security levels: enter your PayPal account every single time, or let Bump Pay remember your PayPal password. The former is probably the safest way to prevent people from bumping your money. Bump Pay only works in person, of course, and cannot be used to transfer money if you can’t physically bump devices with your friend.

Last year, PayPal incorporated Bump’s API in their own iOS app, which made it possible to transfer money by bumping. That feature is no longer available on the PayPal app, but is now newly available as Bump Pay, and may even be incorporated into Bump in the future.

material written about the difficulty that exists in writing. I guess it’s easier to write about our troubles than it is to actually face them head on. Perhaps that’s why I’ve been writing an unusual amount of MakeUseOf posts related to writing.

So here’s another perspective on the problem. If you’re like me and have trouble with writing-related motivation, then here are some great Android writing apps that can help boost your spirits with inspiration and ideas.

Catch Notes

Back in the day, writers would carry around a pocket notebook (most often a Moleskine notebook, made famous by Hemingway) to jot down ideas. After all, creativity often strikes when you least expect it, and it’s one of the most frustrating experiences in the world to lose a great idea because you had nowhere to write it down.

Keep a list of inspired ideas in Catch Notes and look over it every once in a while. You’ll find yourself re-energized and motivated to write about those ideas that you thought were long gone.

Google Docs

As someone who uses multiple electronic devices, I sometimes found myself wanting to write but unable to write because my work was stuck on that other device back at home. With Google Docs, that problem is dealt with.

Habit Streak

Some experts say that it takes 21 straight days of repeating a task before it becomes a habit. The same is true in the negative form – it takes 21 straight days of not doing a task in order to break a habit.

Every day, you input to the app whether or not you successfully accomplished your goal for the day. When you have successes on consecutive days, you build a chain. The chain acts as a motivating force, pushing you towards writing so that you don’t break the chain you’ve built.

A good portion of “writer’s block” comes from the overwhelming nature of writing. Whether you’re writing a paper, an article, or a book, the project might seem too daunting. Saying that you want to “write a novel” is akin to saying that you want to “build a city.” There’s so much you have to do and it can end up bogging you down.

That’s why you should break it up into more manageable chunks. Instead of “writing a novel,” break it down into parts, and then chapters, and then scenes. Organize these chunks into tasks, and then use a to-do-list to track your progress. After all, it’s easier to write 100 words 10 separate times than it is to write 1,000 words all at once.

There are plenty of to-do-list apps available for Android, but my personal favorite is Any.DO. It looks sleek, it works fast, and it makes the process of keeping an up-to-date list easy.

DroidTropes

If you lurk on any of the huge forum communities out there (e.g., Reddit), then you’ve likely come across someone posting a link to TvTropes followed by the obligatory warning not to click. There’s a sort of ongoing joke that once you visit TvTropes, you’ll be stuck there for hours on end, reading through pages and pages of interesting tropes used in fiction.

But for those of you who write fiction and are creatively blocked, TvTropes can be a godsend. View a random page and meander through all of the links you can find. Engross yourself in that web of information. Inevitably, you’ll find something that will spark inspiration within you.

Use DroidTropes to easily browse through TvTropes from your Android device. I’ve used it a number of times and there’s no telling how many new ideas I’ve gained from using this app.

PomLife Lite

The Pomodoro Technique is a productivity method that has been covered here at MakeUseOf a number of times from a bunch of different angles. If you don’t know about it, you owe it to yourself to go ahead and give it a try.

This technique works fantastically in tandem with writing goals. Yes, the Pomodoro Technique can definitely help you break through writer’s block.

PomLife Lite is one of the few free Pomodoro timer apps for Android, and it’s worth having on your device. You can apply it to many things outside of writing.

Motivational Quote For Success

Sometimes motivational quotes are nothing more than empty words. But other times, when you’re really down and out, when you really need something uplifting and inspirational, quotes can be exactly what you need.

To be sure, this app isn’t specifically aimed at writers. It’s more about general success, perseverance, and motivation. Still, it’s very applicable for writers who are struggling to put their pen to paper.
