For Windows 7 a different approach has to be followed to accomplish the same job. In this post you will find how to enable or disable the Hibernate option in Windows 7.

Hibernation is a power saving option which was designed primarily for laptops. Unlike “sleep mode” which puts the open documents and files into the memory, hibernation puts all the open files and documents on to the hard disk and shuts down the computer without drawing even a small amount of power. Thus hibernation becomes an excellent way to save power and resume Windows back to the state where it was left off. If you really want to use this feature on Windows 7 then you need to enable this option. This can be done as follows.
1. Open the Command Prompt with “Administrator rights”. To do so, type cmd in Start menu and then hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter.

2. Now type the following command in the command prompt and hit Enter.

powercfg /hibernate on

3. Type exit and hit Enter to close the Command Prompt. Now you should see the “Hibernate” option in the Start menu. If not then perform the following steps.

A. Type Power Options in the Start menu and hit Enter.

B. In the left pane, open the link labeled “Change when the computer sleeps” and then open the link “Change advanced power settings”.

Now a small window will pop-up as shown below:

C. Now expand the Sleep tree and turn off Allow Hybrid Sleep as shown in the above screenshot.

D. Now you should see the Hibernate option in the Start menu.
Start any application, say Word. Open some large documents.

2). Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to open Windows Task Manager and click Processes tab and sort the list in descending order on Mem Usage. You will notice that WINWORD.EXE will be somewhere at the top, using multiple MBs of memory.

3). Now switch to Word and simply minimize it. (Don't use the Minimize All Windows option of the task bar).

4). Now go back to the Windows Task Manager and see where WINWORD.EXE is listed. Most probably you will not find it at the top. You will typically have to scroll to the bottom of the list to find Word. Now check out the amount of RAM it is using. Surprised? The memory utilization has reduced by a huge amount.

5). Minimize each application that you are currently not working on by clicking on the Minimize button & you can increase the amount of available RAM by a substantial margin. Depending upon the number and type of applications you use together, the difference can be as much as 50 percent of extra RAM.

In any multitasking system, minimizing an application means that it won't be utilized by the user right now. Therefore, the OS automatically makes the application use virtual memory & keeps bare minimum amounts of the code in physical RAM.

What is Linux operating system ?

One of us may wonder: What is "Linux"?
The following items will be traded in the post and this is the introduction of a system known as Linux:

Presentation of the steps through which the process of developing the operating system "Linux".

List of the components of the operating system "Linux".

Linux is a free operating system based on the orders of UNIX, and is intended for personal computers and supports internet, and this system has evolved very quickly and got very popular.

And of the main reasons for the spread of this system, is the ability to get it for free from the Internet or on CD-ROM at nominal prices.

Of the great advantages of this system superior performance when it runs on all of the advanced equipment and those with modest specifications, and can work with devices that support 32-bit or based 64-bit.

Linux Kernel has been developed by a student in computer science in the city of Helsinki in Finland, named Linus Torvalds, and has emerged the first version of Linux in 1991 and bears the number 0.02. At that time, Linus was not satisfied with the reality of operating systems available in a timely manner, it was expensive and many problems, we decided to write a new operating system by following the design of the operating system UNIX (back of this regime in 1969).

The development a major achievement in Linux operating systems market, even then, the closed operating systems, in addition to being developed and owned by large companies, but Linux did not develop to be a commercial operating system, but on the contrary has been developed according to open-system development policy and that allow volunteers from anywhere in the world to contribute to the development of Linux, has been provided with the source code of the system free to anyone willing to contribute to the development. Since the emergence of the first version of Linux and to the present time is still a system is distributed free of charge.

They are detrimental, lowering the performance of your computer. You might need to replace data. You might lose unique files. Keep the nasties away from your computer using these ten simple tips.

1. Use Firefox: Internet Explorer is the most popular browser on the market, controlling over 50% of the market share. The virus and adware creators specifically look for exploitable vulnerabilities within IE because they know that they will receive the best return on investment. Your switch to Firefox prevents some adware from infecting your machine.

2. Scan your PC once a week: Sometimes adware programmers take a sneaky approach. They will set up their programs to run quietly in the background to spy upon your activities. This once a week scan is necessary to remove any of those sneaky bugs.

3. Download from known sites: New sites for installing adware are popping up all the time. If you find something that you want to download, make sure that it is from a known site. A company like Amazon will not steer you wrong, but Bob’s House of Wares might be a little less trustable. If you are not sure whether you can trust a site, perform a quick search.

4. Install Adaware: Ad-Aware is the most popular free adware removal program on the market. It detects, quarantines and removes adware. It searches for other programs which may have been installed, highlighting them in an easy to use interface. This program does not have an anti-virus attached.

5. Do not click on unsolicited email: You are constantly receiving offers to increase this or improve that through unsolicited email. Your curiosity may be killing you, but don’t click on these emails. They accept your click as permission to install adware, spyware and malware on your PC.

6. Install Antivirus software: Installing two programs for virus and adware protection is a smart idea. It caters to the strengths of each program, increasing the overall strength of your antiadware and antiviral campaign. Some of the best antivirus software is free, providing real time protection. Programs to look at would be Avast Antivir and AVG.

7. Don’t install toolbars: Even some reputable sites install custom toolbars. They slow your system down and collect information about your surfing habits. While a toolbar might offer some perks, it may also diminish your experience by dragging your system to a halt. Toolbars from less reputable places install adware and sometimes infect your system outright.

8. Look at your task manager: If anything seems out of place with your computer, take a look at your task manager. This tells you about all of the programs and processes which are running on your computer. Examine the processes tab for anything which you don’t immediately recognize. Perform a web search for unfamiliar processes.

9. Do not click on popups: Clicking on a popup usually spells certain doom for your computer. It opens the door for the viruses and adware that want to infect your machine, telling these malicious applications to make themselves at home. Stay away from those constantly advertised screensavers and icons.

10. Trust your gut: If you don’t feel right about a site, don’t go there. If you are receiving warnings from the antivirus and antiadware programs which you’ve installed, don’t go there. If you don’t like the layout of a site, don’t go there. Trust your instincts about sites.

With proper vigilance, you can keep aggravating adware, spyware and malware from your machine. Trust your instincts. Install Ad-Aware and an antivirus program. Play it safe. The care you spend in preventing adware from infecting your machine can save money and time

How to Install any Linux on a USB

There are so many reasons why having a Linux distribution on a USB drive can come in handy. From having a “rescue” OS on your keyring to being able to install a new distribution on your EeePC, a “thumb drive” Linux has many uses. But getting Linux onto a USB drive can’t be simple. Right? Wrong. There is a tool, UNetbootin, that makes installing Linux
on a USB drive simple.

UNetbootin can be used on either Linux or Windows. In this article, we’ll be illustrating it for Both.

Note: Not all USB installations will work on all machines. This can be an issue with your BIOS or your USB drive. If you install an OS that doesn’t work, try another. But after all that work, you might wind up with a machine that simply won’t boot from a USB drive. You have been warned.

Using UNetbootin with Linux

1. The first thing to do is download a copy of UNetbootin. For our purposes we’ll download the Linux universal install binary (named unetbootin-linux-299). Once that has finished you will need to issue the Following command in order to make the file executable.

chmod u+x unetbootin-linux29

2. Once the file is executable issue the following command (from the same directory unetbootin-linx-299 is stored) to see the application running.

su ./unetbootin-linux-299

3. But you’re not ready just yet. Depending upon your distribution, you might come across an error involving p7zip-full. This might be in your distribution’s repositories. If you use Mandriva you can install p7zip but you will not have the full package. If you use Ubuntu you can get p7zip-full with the following command

apt-get install p7zip-full

4. Before you run the application you will need to insert and mount your usb drive. Stick in your usb drive and then issue the following command to find out where your usb drive is located.

dmesg

5. Mount that and then issue the following command. When you issue the command you will see the UNetbootin window.

su ./unetbootin-linux-299

6. Once this window is up and running you are almost there. If you have very specific needs for your distribution you will most likely have an image file downloaded to use. If you do not you can select your distribution from the drop down list. First you select the distribution and then you select the version (or release). Note: Unless you have a very large USB drive you will most likely want to use a netinstall version of your distribution. If you do happen to have a large USB drive you can go ahead with a full distribution. If this usb drive is for rescue purposes, or just to have a version of Linux with you at all times, a distribution like PCLinuxOS Minime is a greate choice.

7. Once the process is done you will have two buttons to click, Reboot and Exit. Don’t bother with the Reboot button. Click the Exit button and UNetbootin will close. You can now unmount your drive and reboot your machine to see if the installation works.Note: When your machine boots you will need to make sure it first boots from the USB device.

Using UNebootin with Windows

1. Download UNetBootin for Windows.
2. Download your favorite Linux ISO (Don’t ask me from where just Google it).
3. Now Start the Unetbootin.
4. Click the Disk Image radio box and browse to select Linux ISO.
5. Now set your target USB drive and click OK to start the creation UNetbootin Live USB Creation from an ISO.
6. Once the UNetbootin installer has completed, click Reboot. Now UNetbootin installation is finished.
7. Set your system BIOS or boot menu to boot from the USB device and enjoy your favorite Live Linux on USB.

A Complete Guide on Getting Your Blog Indexed by Google within 24 Hours

A common problem faced by most of the bloggers is getting their blog indexed in Google or any other major search engines. If you’re blogging on Blogger-hosted blog, then you don’t have to worry about getting indexed in Google as all your entries or posts are shown in Google Search Results immediately at the instant time you hit the “Publish” button. After creating your blog, just follow these simple steps and you’ll see your website in Search Engine Results within 24 hours for sure. (100% working)
Installing the All in One SEO pack plugin. Although I do not have any basic knowledge/ experience of using WordPress before, I’ve read a lot of articles about the use of this great plugin which is really essential to every WordPress users. Log into Google Webmasters Tools with your Google account and add your blog/site by clicking the ‘Add a site‘ button. Then, type the domain name you wish to add, and click ‘Continue‘. You will have to verify your site using a META Tag. Copy it go to your WordPress Dashboard > Plugins > and paste the META tag in the ‘Additional Home Headers‘ at the bottom and ‘Update‘ the info. Then, click ‘Verify‘ on Google Webmaster Tools and you are done.

Step #3: Submit your Sitemap to Google

Install Google XML Sitemaps plugin for WordPress. This plugin will generate a XML sitemap which you can submit to Google Webmasters Tools or any other search engines to better index your blog. Once you’ve activated it in your ‘Plugins‘ page, you’ll see a ‘XML-Sitemap‘ link under ‘Settings‘ menu. So, build your XML sitemap for the first time by clicking on “Rebuild Sitemap” button. So, your sitemap URL will be looking like this http://www.yourblogname.com/sitemap.xml or http://www.yourblogname.com/sitemap.xml.gz. So now, go to Google Webmasters > Site Configurations > Sitemaps > Click on ‘Add a sitemap‘ button. Now, type ‘sitemap.xml‘ in the text area box which comes after http://www.yourblogname.com/ and click “Submit” button. This great plugin will automatically update your sitemap every time you publish your post.

Step #4: Adding your site to Google Analytics

First, sign into Google Analytics using your Google Account. Then, you will have to add your Website’s URL, Contact information, accept User Agreements and finally you’ll be provided with a Tracking Code. Copy the code and go to WordPress Dashboard > Appearances > Editor > Footer.php and paste the code right above the tag. This step is important to track your visitors, traffic sources, page views and more.

Google Search in 24 hrs.

Step #5: Site Stats and Valuation sites

This is another simplest way to tell to Google that you page does exist. Usually, most of us have come across site valuation sites which tells you “How Much Does Your Site Worth?” These sites already have good place/rankings in Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines. So, when you submit your site and check your site’s value there, it will automatically create a special page for your blog/website (like this, this and this ). This will help your site to easily get indexed by Google. Here is a list of such sites:

Alexa, About The Domain, Stat Brain, Stimator, BizInformation, Websiteoutlook, QuarkBase, Whois, Cubestat, BuiltWith, URLfan, SiteValueCheck, Business-Opportunities, NinjaWebsiteAppraiser, MyWebsiteWorth, Estimix and etc.

Step #6: Social Networking and Bookmarking sites

Register an account with top Social Networking Sites such as Facebook ( Facebook fans page ), Twitter, Orkut and bookmarking sites such as StumbleUpon, Technorati, Digg, Delicious, and etc. As they have a good reputation in Google, they will make Googlebot to have a glance at your site. But, remember to use your site name like this www.facebook.com/yourblogname or twitter.com/yourblogname .

Step #7: Blog directories and communities

Add your blog to top directories such as Technorati, BlogCatalog, Bloggernity, GlobeofBlogs, Blogged, OnTopList and etc. This is the most easiest and effective way to get free quality back links from websites with higher Google page ranks.

Step #8: Link Exchanges

Link exchange is one of the ancient but effective way for people to get exposure to their website and get indexed. But usually, no body wants to exchange link with a blog with zero Google Page rank and no Alexa rank. Though, you can try to exchange link with your friends and peers who already have websites with good rankings or try free link exchange services such as Link Market where you can exchange links with other people.

So, if you’ve followed each and every step that I’ve mentioned above, I bet that your site/blog (at least your homepage if you’ve just started your blog) will be indexed in Google Search Engine results within 24 hours. Try to check for those links by typing “site:www.yourblogname.com” in Google Search. Good luck.
I bet it will be very helpful to Indian Computer Engineering Students.

Seven Steps to become a world class computer Engineer

Reasons for writing this post:

I feel I have not done enough to become a good computer engineer. May be I did not have someone who could guide me properly. We were only the second batch of Computer Engineering at Nirma Institute of Technology, Ahmedabad, so we had no mentors in the industry.

Second reason, may be we were not mature enough.

Third reason, 3 Idiots was not released at that time.

So this post is dedicated to all the fellow computer engineering students (especially in India) who are still having a good time by bunking the classes but not doing good enough to become a world class computer engineer otherwise.

But what can I do?

1. Have the right infrastructure

Get yourself a decent laptop. (I prefer Mac but any decent Dell laptop is also ok)

Get yourself a nice internet connection with highest speed available. (Take a cut from your pocket money if you have to but this is a must)

Get yourself an iPhone (I know it is expensive in India but you will have to use world class gadgets to become world class engineer)

Make your home or hostel room WiFi enabled. (This is not expensive. You will get a decent router in 2-3k.)

If you are not able to do any or all of the above things, don’t worry you can still become a good computer engineer. So hang on and keep reading.

2. Learn to use Google Reader

Google reader will become the best companion of yours for lifetime if you use it properly.

It is nothing but a cool RSS reader from Google using which you can subscribe to blogs to get latest updates and posts. So if you have a gmail account you are ready to go. What? You do not have a gmail account yet!! Go get one right now. Stop reading. Open a gmail account now and come back. I am waiting.

I am still waiting.

Ok great, so you have a gmail account now, good. Watch this video . It explains in plain english how to use google reader.

Software, Web Search Strategies, Wikis, Social Bookmarking, Social Networking, Blogs, Pod casting and Cloud computing on http://www.commoncraft.com/ (Now you understand why I told you get the fastest internet connection available?). You don’t have to see them all at once but do check them all and understand.

Done? Ok so you are ready to become a world class computer engineer now.

Now you understand Google Reader, so it’s time to subscribe to interesting blogs. Subscribe to following blogs.

Techcrunch.com (King of Technology Blogs)

Gigaom.com (Michale Arrington of Techcrunch considers Om as his Guru)

ReadWriteWeb.com

Pluggd.in (Indian Techcrunch)

JoelOnSoftware.com (a must read for programmers)

CodingHorror.com (another must read for programmers)

There are many such blogs but to start with these are ok. You will keep finding other interesting blogs as and when you will come across some.

Getting used to read on computer takes time and patience so just keep reading it.

So I guess we are done with Google Reader part here. This means you have to open up Google Reader as soon you bunk the classes or as soon as you get the time to check your mails.

Seven Steps to become a world class computer Engineer

3. Academic Earth

Do you want to see how professors teach in Harvard and Stanford? Do you want to see how their lectures are conducted? You can now, we were not able to do that in our time.

Go to www.academicearth.org and you will see videos of actual lectures and courses of Harvard, Yale, Stanford. Now you know whose lectures to watch after bunking the classes or after getting back to home.

You do not want to miss the chance of studying in these universities without going to US to giving them millions in fees right? and guess what? Attendance is not compulsory here :)

Learn any web language quickly and start building

I would suggest PHP or Ruby. ASP.NET C# is also fine if you already know something about it.

And start building something on it. It can be anything. But start programming on web now. Most of you are never going to write a program C, C++ or COBOL in your lifetime. I would not advise against learning them though.

After you know something about web programming, read “Getting Real” from 37Signals.

Now again build something using whatever you learned from the above book.

5. Assume you are in Sillicon Valley

I know this sounds little weird but that’s the way it is.

The best of the minds in the world are there and you do not want to miss out on that right?

Thousands of things happen everyday in Sillicon Valley and you can remain updated by reading above blogs I mentioned.

So start feeling the air.

6. Start asking why?

When you are attending a lecture or reading anything, have a habit of asking why?

For e.g. Why we have to study “Strength of Materials” when most of us are going to write web applications in PHP or ASP.NET?

When you ask why often, you start understanding the logic, the reason behind doing anything.

Same as they have said in 3 Idiots, don’t learn to get marks but learn to know something, to achieve the excellence. When you start asking why, you start on the right path.

7. Understand computer hardware

Most people thinks this is boring and unnecessary.

May be it is, but it will certainly make you better programmer, even if you will never touch the inside of the computer again.

Basic understanding of hardware is necessary to understand how computer works.

You have to understand following 100% without any doubt in your mind.

How your high level programming code becomes 0s and 1s and execute?

The text which you are reading now is also consisting of 0s and 1s only then how come you are reading the alphabets here?

FYI I am still not 100% clear on this. But I will be one day. Till then I am not a good computer engineer.

I guess I have get you started here.

By following any or all of the above steps you are destined to become world class computer engineer. By no means I am asking you to stop whatever you are doing right now in your college.
These are additional things you have to do. It takes hard work to become world class right?

You are always on your own to achieve the path of excellence. Friends and Tutors can only guide you, they can not make you one.

I would request my fellow classmates to add points in this post. I believe our batch 99CE in Nirma Institue of Technology had one of the best and brightest minds in the world. Do you have any doubt? Well this guy is one of them. 99CE people are in MIT, Google, Apple, Barclays, Bank of America to name a few. They are spread across the world and are on their way to become future leaders.

I would also request people who have read this post and feel they can add something here to help students of computer engineering. My aim is to have great people coming out of Indian Engineering Colleges.

Last words, by no means above list is exhaustive and complete. There are “n” number of ways to achieve excellence. These are my personal views and I have learned them long and hard way. I hope to make your journey little easier by this post.
Most people do not seem to understand the importance of this tool. It’s only when their account is hacked, password is stolen or some security is compromised with, that they bother to exercise due care in dealing with passwords. Creating an ultra-strong password and not sharing it with world is all it takes to be safe on the web.
Here’s a guide that will help you create an easy-to-remember but strong password.

Tips:

Secure Yourself from Hackers & Hijackers

How To Get Back Your Hacked Gmail/Orkut/Google

Keep Protect Your FaceBook and Twitter Privacy

Essentials of a good password

1. Password should at least be 8-10 characters long.
2. Passwords should be a combination of numbers and letters.
3. Letters should be both capital and small.
4. At least one symbol or special character should be present.

Steps to create a strong password

Step 1. Select A Sentence: First step is to select an 8-10 words sentence. The important thing to keep in mind here is that the sentence should not be obvious or guessable. Any random sentence is good enough. Do not take guessable and/or short sentences like “I first name is XYZ“, etc. For the purpose of explaining, we will take the first line of this post as the sentence.

“Passwords are your first and last line of defense”.

Step 2. Trimming the words into characters: Reduce the words to their first letters. For example, “Passwords” can be reduced to “p“. Also, words like “are” can be changed to “r“, So our sentence gets reduced in the following manner:

Passwords [p] are [r] your [y] first [f] and[a] last[l] line[l] of[o] defense[d]

Now, the password looks like this: pryfallod
*
Step 3. Insert Numbers: As said before, a good password has both, numbers & alphabets. So to get numbers, we can do two things. Firstly, the word in Step 1 can be represented by numbers. In our example, “first” in the sentence can be represented by “1” instead of “f“. Secondly, letters in Step 2 can be converted into numbers which look similar. In the present case, the second last letter “o” can be changed to “0[zero]. Similarly you can substitute ” l” for “1“.

After this step, our password turns into: pry1all0d

Step 4. Capital & Small Cap Letters: Some of the letters in the password have to be capitalized. Now we arrive at the question, which ones? The first and last letter can be selected. Or, perhaps, those letters can be selected which are more prominent or more important. In our case, “passwords” and “defence” happen to be the most prominent words in the sentence. These words need not be at the end or start of the sentence.

Now our password looks like: Pry1all0D

Step 5. Special Characters or Symbols: Symbols lend and extra level of security to the password and make it nearly impossible to crack. One can randomly add a special character to the password or follow the same method that one did in Step 3 with numbers.

For instance, “l” can be replaced with “!” or “a” can be replaced with “@“. Or randomly substitute letters with symbols like changing “y” with “$“.

Final password: Pry1al!!d

key chain accessNow, this password is really difficult to crack. Looking at it, one may think that it would be really hard to memorize such a password. However, it isn’t that hard to remember it. In fact, by the time I complete writing the article, I myself have memorized the password. Moreover, even if you forget the password, you’ll always have the original sentence to help you recall the password.

Now that you have a good password, here are a couple of things you should take care of;

* You should never share password with somebody else, not even your best buddy or spouse.
* You should never write down your password anywhere, neither on a paper nor in notepad or document file.

Often, the best passwords lose their importance if any of the two tips above isn’t followed.

Tips:

Secure Yourself from Hackers & Hijackers

As we are doing the bare minimum these are the most often used commands:
cd = change directory
mkdir = make directory
rmdir = remove directory
rm = remove file
cp = copy
mv = move or rename
ls = lists directories and files
cat = show contents file

O.K. let's play:
Open an console on desktop 1, open the home directory by clicking on it on desktop 2 ( there you can see and verify the commands executed on desktop 1 )

CODE
$ mkdir One ( without the $ ) ( makes a dir One in your home dir )
$ mkdir one ( Linux is case sensitive so "One" and "one" are not the same ! )
$ cp tessst One ( copies the file tessst, that we made in previous Tip, to dir One )
$ mv ssset one ( moves the file ssset, that we made in previous Tip, to dir one )
$ mv one One ( moves dir one in dir One )
$ cd One ( see how the promt puts the current dir in in the prompt ) ( puts you in dir One )
$ ls ( shows you what is inside One )
$ cat tessst ( shows contents file tessst )
$ rm tessst ( removes file tessst from One dir )
$ cd .. ( puts you back in your home dir )
$ rm tessst ( removes tessst from home dir )
$ rm -rf One ( now all files and directories we played with are removed )

We have a look in the filesystem:

CODE
$ cd  /
$ ls

This shows you the directories in “/“ (root filesystem): /boot, /etc, /initrd, /lost+found, /opt, /root, /tmp, /var, /bin, /dev, /home, /lib, /mnt, /proc, /sbin, /usr.

CODE
$ cd /mnt
$ ls

This shows you the mounted devices, cdrom, cdrom2, floppy, (win_c)

CODE
$ cd ( Brings you back to your /home )
$ ls ( What is in your home )
$ ls -a ( What really is in home !! The argument “-a” shows the hidden files. Hidden files start with “.” )
$ touch .tessst ( Makes an empty hidden file called .tessst in /home )
$ ls  ( You don't see .tessst )
$ ls -a  ( You do see .tessst )
$ rm .tessst ( Removes the hidden file .tessst )
$ ls -al ( Shows you all the files in /home with their “permissions” more about that later. )

To know more about these commands and the arguments you can give them, see: "man cd" "man cp" "man mv" etc. etc.

Note: First, disconnect your PC from the net, pull the cable out !

Step 1: For Redhat and Mandrake:

Then boot from your first install CD and as the very first screen comes up hit F2 and type:

rescue ( For RedHat "linux rescue" )

and the computer will boot in rescue mode.

It will show a few alternatives, select : ¨mount the existing partitions¨ and go to the shell/console prompt.

( Booting Mandrake in "failsafe" from the Lilo menu does the same )

TIPS:

Linux Tips - Lost User Password

Accesing Files on a Data CD or on a Floppy in Linux

Multiple Emulators Solution To Play Any Game In Linux

Step 1: For SUSE:

Boot from your first install CD and press F1 at the first screen, then choose "Rescue System" from the menu and at the prompt type "root" ( you do not need a password )

Step 1: For other distro's

Boot from the first install CD ( or any Live CD like Knoppix ) and at the bootprompt type:

CODE

linux single

( For Knoppix: knoppix single )
And it will boot in "single user mode" and you will get an odd looking prompt like “sh-2.05b#”

Alternative for step 1

Sure with most Live and Rescue CDs you can also just boot in the live version, mount the partition and, as root, make changes to the files indicated below:

Step 2

CODE

# cd /etc

( if you boot from knoppix first cd to the partition your lost-password-distro is on )

We need to change two files; ¨passwd¨ and ¨shadow¨:

CODE

# vi passwd

( opens the file )
< i > ( puts vi in insertmode )

This is the first line:

root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

Make it:

root::0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

So just get writ of the ¨x¨ do not touch the ¨:¨ ( colons )

Save the file:
Esc
ZZ

Second file to be changed:

CODE

# vi shadow

( open the file )
< i > ( insert mode )

The first line is a long scrambled line of characters, just make it:

root:::: ( four colons ! )

Save the file
Esc
ZZ

Now you can reboot your computer. Log in as normal user, open a console and type:

CODE

$ su

# passwd

And set the new root password !

Log out as root:
Ctrl+d

And the job is done !!

WARNING: Only after setting your new root password it is safe to connect your computer to the internet or local network again !!

TIPS:

Linux Tips - Lost User Password

I know it´s hard to figure, but weirder things happen !

TIPS:

Linux Tips - Lost ROOT Password

Accesing Files on a Data CD or on a Floppy in Linux

Multiple Emulators Solution To Play Any Game In Linux

The solution however is simple:

CODE

$ su

< root-password >

# passwd pkb

( if that is your username, don´t use mine )

Type in a new password ( you will likely get an error message, ignore it )
Type in the same password again !

Log out as root and log in as user with your new password !
( I said is was easy ! )

Next time we will attack the forgotten ROOT password ! A bit more complicated but it sure can be done.

TIPS:

Linux Tips - Lost ROOT Password

This will show you the content of the CD, which you can copy somewhere else.
Copying from the mp3 or ogg folders will do the automatic translations for you.

Else, there are two programs with graphical interface which allow you to rip audio CD: 'grip' and 'kaudiocreator'.

On, the command line, you can use cdparanoia. For example, to rip an entire audio CD:

cdparanoia -B

To rip just one track:

cdparanoia -w track_number file.wav

TIPS:

Linux Tips - Lost User Password

Accesing Files on a Data CD or on a Floppy in Linux

Multiple Emulators Solution To Play Any Game In Linux

If yes then, Wine is for you. Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix. Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code, however Wine can optionally use native Windows DLLs if they are available. Wine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris.

TIPS:

Puppy Arcade 7

Tips And Tricks

Run Puppy Arcade without a hard drive
After booting, you can simply replace your Puppy Arcade live-CD with a CD/DVD full of roms.
Mount the DVD/CD drive and your roms will be available at '/mnt/sr0/'

Hard Drive/USB Install

Put your savefile on the same drive as your roms, and your roms will be available at '/mnt/home/path/to/your/roms'

Create An Easy To Remember ROM Directory

You can symlink your roms folder to /roms/ - so it's easy and quick to reach them. To do this, type 'ln -s /path/to/your/roms /roms' in the terminal

Use You Joypad Or Joystick

Plug in your device before the Puppy Arcade deskop loads. Your joypad will be loaded automatically and should be called '/dev/js0'. You can now update the controller settings in your emulators, or using 'Rejoypad'.

Download Puppy Arcade 7 (Latest Puppy Arcade 9)

It is licensed under the GNU GPL and intended to be lightweight, but full of useful features for programming, from website editing to coding. It is based upon the GTK+ 2 toolkit, supports many languages through config files and offers functions such as automatic indentation, completion and correction, as well as syntax highlighting. It even has its own mini macro language.
It was written by Pavel Císler, formerly a senior developer at Be, who later worked for Eazel and currently works for Apple and continues to develop Eddie as his pet project, now on Mac OS X. Inspired by the classic Macintosh’ Macintosh Programmer’s Workshop editor, it is primarily intended for working with C and C++ development. However, Eddie supports syntax colouring for HTML, JavaScript, .kon/.widget, Perl, and many other formats. Eddie supports a Worksheet — provides a well-appointed shell that enables the power of bash and the convenience of editing in a normal text window mode.
And like Komodo IDE, Komodo Edit also supports browser-side languages like JavaScript, CSS, HTML, and XML. It was developed for programmers who need a multi-language editor with broad functionality, but not the features of an IDE, like debugging, DOM viewer, interactive shells, and source code control integration.
Whether you use it at home, at school or at work Ubuntu contains all the applications you'll ever need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools. Portable Ubuntu for Windows is a Ubuntu system running as a Windows application. This system is built with the Colinux Kernel, Xming X server and Pulseaudio server for Windows. You can carry it on your thumb drive.
Portable Ubuntu for Windows runs an entire Linux operating system as a Windows application.
Portable Ubuntu lets you seamlessly run Linux apps on your Windows desktop, Portable Ubuntu is a stand-alone package that runs a fairly standard (i.e. orange-colored, GNOME-based) version of the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution. It just doesn't bother creating its own desktop, and puts all its windows inside your Windows's windows.
The coolest parts about Portable Ubuntu are:

It actually works.

It fits on a thumb drive (flash drive) and can run entirely from it.

It can work on, and save to, your Windows folders and files.

It's persistent, so changes you make and apps you install are carried around with you.

It's easily manageable from Windows, and works great on dual monitors.

You run Windows and Linux at the same time.

You do not need to shift at other computer to test your applications different for Linux and Windows.
This is actually possible using the slmgr -rearm command which will extend the grace period from 30 days to 120 days. However in this post I will show you a small trick using which it is possible to use Windows 7 without activation for approximately an year! Here is a way to do that.

Windows 7 Activation

1. Goto “Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories” . Right click on “Command Prompt” and select “Run as Administrator“. If you are not the administrator then you are prompted to enter the password, or else you can proceed to step-2.

2. Now type the following command and hit enter

slmgr -rearm
3. You will be prompted to restart the computer. Once restarted the trial period will be once again reset to 30 days. You can use the above command for up to 3 times by which you can extend the trial period to 120 days without activation.

4. Now comes the actual trick by which you can extend the trial period for another 240 days. Open Registry Editor (type regedit in “Run” and hit Enter) and navigate to the following location

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

5. In right-side pane, change value of SkipRearm to 1.

6. Now you will be able to use the slmgr -rearm command for another 8 times so that you can skip activation process for another 240 days. So you will get 120 + 240 = 360 days of free Windows 7 usage.

120 days using “slmgr -rearm” command before registry edit + 240 days using “slmgr -rearm” command after registry edit = 360 Days

Introducing MAC Tini – A Computer with Single Button

Have you ever though about having an intelligent computer which requires only a key press to do whatever you want to do with it?

www.paypal.com

You can use PayPal to Accept Credit Card Payments for your website. If you have been using services like e-Junkie, then its time to drop it. You can even choose to handle advertisement section using PayPal. You do not need to chase advertisers for Payment anymore. PayPal can handle advertisers. They subscribe to display ads on your website and pay to your PayPal account and you just have to display their ad. Ever seen large ad spots at websites? TechMynd has got those irritating ad spots at the right side if you see. They have not been purchased yet. Empty blank boxes are ugly. You can choose to display text there instead of those empty boxes and handle all the process using your PayPal account. PayPal allows advertisers to subscribe for ad spot, you choose the price, advertiser choose the subscription time period and you get the text code to display text of your choice to sell ad spots at your website. Its not like BuySellAds, its better than that. You don't have to pay anything to PayPal for this service. You get all you receive from the advertiser. Here is how you can do it.

Go to PayPal and login

Go to 'Merchants Services'

In 'Start accepting payments' Select 'Sell Single Item' or 'Sell subscriptions'

Select and fill requirements e.g. button, amount, item name, product information etc.

You can change the button style used and add more options such as color, size, etc.

When finished click 'Create Button'. The next page tells how to place the button on your website or within an email.

Done! It's that easy. You can create as many buttons as you want for your products. There are also lots of other solutions available so you can send invoices for your products or services, and even have a shopping cart with a 'View Cart' button.

Be Safe from Hackers

Hackers and Browser Hijacking is one area of the Net that affects everyone at some stage.
In addition to having third party utilities such as SpyBot, Anti Virus scanners and firewalls installed there are some changes that can be made to Windows 2000/XP. Below are some details to make your system safer from hackers and hijackers.

Some of these tips require editing of the Registry so it is wise to either backup the registry and/or create a Restore Point.

1. Clearing the Page File at Shutdown
Windows 2000/XP paging file (Sometimes called the Swap File) can contain sensitive information such as plaintext passwords. Someone capable of accessing your system could scan that file and find its information. You can force windows to clear out this file.

In the registry navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Session Manager/Memory Management/ and add or edit the DWORD ClearPageFileAtShutdown. Set it to 1.

Note that when you do this, the system will take much longer to shut down: a system with a really big Page File (! Gig or more) may take a minute or two longer.

2. Disable the POSIX and OS/2 Subsystem.
Windows 2000 and XP come with little-documented subsystems it at allow compatibility with UNIX and OS/2 systems These rues systems are enabled by default but so rarely used that they are best off bring disabled completely to prevent possible service hijackings.

To disable these subsystems, open the registry and navigate to HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Session Manager/SubSystems/. Delete the subkeys Os2 and Posix. then reboot.

3. Never leave default passwords blank.

Make Password Safe

On installation, Windows 2000 sets up an Administrator account with total system access and prompts for a password. Guess what: by default, it allows that password to be blank. If a user doesn't want to type a password, he can simply click Next and the system will be an open door for anyone who wants to log on. Always opt for a password of some kind when setting up the default account on a machine.

4. Disable the Guest account
Windows XP comes with a Guest account that's used for limited access, but it's still possible to do some damage with it. Disable it completely if you are not using it. Under Control Panel, select User Accounts, click on Guest Account and then select Turn Off the Guest Account.

5. Install Windows In a different directory.
Windows usually installs itself in the WINDOWS directory. Windows NT 4 0 and 2000 Will opt for WINNT. Many worms and other rogue programs assume this to be the case and attempt to exploit those folders files. To defeat this install Windows to another directory when you're setting it up - you can specify the name of the directory during setup. WINDIR is okay; so some people use WNDWS - A few (not that many) programs may not install properly if you install Windows to another folder but t hey are very few and they are far between

6. Fake out hackers with a dummy Administrator account
Since the default account in Windows 2000 is always named Administrator, an enterprising hacker can try to break into your system by attempting to guess the password on that account. It you never bothered to put a password on that account, say your prayers.

Rather than be a sucker to a hacker, put a password on the Administrator account it you haven't done so already. Then change the name of the Administrator account. You'll still be able to use the account under its new name, since Windows identifies user accounts by a back-end ID number rather than the name. Finally, create a new account named Administrator and disable it. This should frustrate any would -be break-ins.

You can add new accounts and change the names of existing accounts in Windows 2000 through the Local Users and Groups snap in. Right-click on My Computer, select Manager, open the Local Users and Groups subtree, look in the Users folder and right-click on any name to rename it. To add a new user, right-click on the containing folder and select New User. Finally, to disable an account, double-click it, check the Account is disabled box and click OK.

Don't ever delete the original Administrator account. Some programs refuse to install without it and you might have to log in under that account at some point to setup such software. The original Administrator account is configured with a security ID that must continue to be present in the system.

7. Set the Hosts file to read-only to prevent name hijacking.
This one's from (and to a degree, for) the experts. The HOSTS file is a text file that all flavors of Windows use to hold certain network addresses that never change. When a network name and address is placed in HOSTS, the computer uses the address listed there for that network name rather than performing a lookup (which can take time). Experts edit this file to place their most commonly-visited sites into it, speeding things up considerably.

Unfortunately hijackers and hackers also love to put their own information into it - redirecting people from their favorite sites to places they don't want to go. One of the most common entries in HOSTS is local host which is set 1770.0.1. This refers to the local machine and if this entry is damaged the computer can behave very unpredictably.

To prevent HOSTS from being hijacked, set it to read-only. Go to the folder %Systemroot%system32driversetc, right-click on HOSTS, select Properties check the Read-Only box and click OK. If you want to add your own entries to HOSTS, you can unprotect it before doing so, but always remember to set it to read-only after you're done.

8. Turn off unneeded Services
Windows 2000 and XP both come with many background services that don't need to he running most of the time: Alerter, Messenger, Server (If you're running a standalone machine with no file or printer shares), NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing, Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (the last two if you're not using Remote Desktop or NetMeeting), Remote Registry, Routing and Remote Access (if you're not using Remote Access), SSDP Discovery Service, Telnet, and Universal Plug and Play Device Host.
A good resource and instruction on which of these services can be disabled go to : http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/

9. Disallow changes to IE settings through IE
This is another anti hijacker tip. IE can be set so that any changes to its settings must be performed through the Internet icon in the Control Panel, rather than through IE's own interface. Some particularly unscrupulous programs or sites try to tamper with setting by accessing the Tools, Options menu in IE. You can disable this and still make changes to IE's settings through the Control Panel.

Open the Registry and browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Policies/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Restrictions. Create or edit a new DWORD value named NoBrowserUptions and set it to 1 (this is a per-user setting). Some third-party programs such as Spybot Search And Destroy allow you to toggle this setting.

You can also keep IE from having other programs rename its default startup page, another particularly annoying form of hijacking. Browse to HKEY.CURRENT USER/Software/Policies/Microsoft/Internet Explore/Control Panel/ and add or edit a DWORD, Homepage and set it to 1.

Hacker

10. Disable simple File Shares.
In Windows XP Professional, the Simple File Sharing mode is easily exploited, since it- a little too easy to share out a file across your LAN (or the NET at large). To turn it off, go m My Computer, click Tools, Folder Option and the View tab, and uncheck Use Simple file sharing (Recommended). Click OK. When you do this you can access the Security tab in the Properties window for all folders; set permissions for folders; and take ownership of objects (but not in XP Home).

Do you have questions, comments, or suggestions? To disable the display of local or networked drives when you click My Computer.

Hide Drives for security & Privacy

Go to start->run. Type regedit.
Now go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Now in the right pane
create a new DWORD item and name it NoDrives (it is case sensitive).
Now modify it's value and set it to 3FFFFFF (Hexadecimal) .
Now restart your computer.
So, now when you click on My Computer, no drives will be shown(all gone...).

To enable display of drives in My Computer, simply delete this DWORD item that you created. Again restart your computer. You can now see all the drives again.

Notepad Trick to Open Notepad Continuously

This is simple computer prank consists of a code below that will drive your friend crazy as it opens notepad continuously.

To Open Notepad continuously in your friend’s computer:
Type the code in notepad as :

@ECHO off

:top

START %SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe

GOTO top
Save it as “notepad.BAT” and send it.

So, If you want to try this than save all your work and then run this file.

Micro SD

Your files in MMC are stored in multiple (disk) blocks. So if you format using 16K block, the space used will be 16K eventhough your file is just 1K. If you buy MMC, it is usually preformatted with 16K block. Therefore alot of space is wasted as most installed program files are usually less than 2K.

You will need a card reader to do this:-

1. Connect card reader and copy all your files in the MMC to computer disk. (Make sure you set the show all/hidden/os files to "on")

2. Do a format of the MMC using command line "format" and use the /A=size option.

Alternative, you can use the Disk Management in Adminstrative Tools to format. Make sure you select FAT. For 256MB MMC, smallest block you can use is 4K, 128MB is 2K, 64Mb is 1K and 32MB is 512B.

(Note: You cannot use the phone "format MMC" to do this as the format just clear the allocation table and does not change the block size)

3. Copy back all files to MMC.

Now you will find that you will have more space.
256mb MMC got back 30+ mbs

Do you have questions, comments, or suggestions?
