The tuba comes in variable shapes depending on whether it is played in brass and military bands or an orchestra.

Orchestral Tubas

Because the player is sitting, orchestral tubas are designed to sit on players laps as it is so heavy. The brass tube is coiled like that of a trumpet or horn. The large circular opening called the bell faces upwards and to the players left or right. There are valves which open more tubing and make the instrument deeper in pitch. There are usually four valves but some tubas have five or six valves.

Varieties of Orchestral Tubas include:

Tenor Tuba: These have a narrowish tube and a funnel shaped mouthpiece like a horn.
Bass Tuba: These are shaped like a horn.
Double Bass Tuba: These have a wide conical tube and a cup shaped mouthpiece like a trumpet.

These three types of tubas were made for Robert Wagners' Operas called The Ring of the Nibelungs.

An orchestra usually has one tuba.

Military Band Tubas:
Because the player is standing they are designed to be carried on the players shoulders.

Varieties include:

Euphonium: Low Bb is the lowest note.
Eb Bass: This has a lower note
Double Bb Bass: This produces the lowest sound of the three instruments
Helicon: This is a circular shaped double Bb Bass
Soussaphone: This is a circular shaped Eb Bass.

You need to decide if you would like to be part of an orchestra or military band playing the low notes to your group. If you are keen to learn an instrument; do you want to learn the orchestral or military style of tuba?

1. Computer:

2. Software:

<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=ha058-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B004LE0NMQ&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0"><iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=ha058-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B002ISDD1K&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

3. Audio Box:

They improve sound quality and create zero latency.

1. This is a great audio box for beginners because it offers a 2 channel interface which allows for the use of condenser microphones which require 48V Phantom power and dynamic microphone/guitar 1/4 input jack plugin. It is also the most usable because it connects to the USB on the computer instead of requiring a firewire port. Don't let the price fool you this is the best Audion interface on the market for the beginner.

2. If you happen to have a firewire port on your computer (most computers today come with them) then the PreSonus Inspire Firewire Recording interface is recommended. The little extra money is worth spending.

4. Microphone:

5. Instrument:

6. Moniter

from

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

RiffRaff
It's astounding;
Time is fleeting;
Madness takes its toll.
But listen closely...

Magenta
Not for very much longer.

RiffRaff
I've got to keep control.

I remember doing the time-warp
Drinking those moments when
The Blackness would hit me

Magenta
And the void would be calling...

Transylvanians
Let's do the time-warp again.
Let's do the time-warp again.

Narrator
It's just a jump to the left.

All
And then a step to the right.

Narrator
Put your hands on your hips.

All
You bring your knees in tight.
But it's the pelvic thrust
That really drives you insane.
Let's do the time-warp again.
Let's do the time-warp again.

Magenta
It's so dreamy, oh fantasy free me.
So you can't see me, no, not at all.
In another dimension, with
voyeuristic intention,
Well secluded, I see all.

RiffRaff
With a bit of a mind flip

Magenta
You're into the time slip

RiffRaff
And nothing can ever be the same.

Magenta
You're spaced out on sensation.

RiffRaff
Like you're under sedation.

All
Let's do the time-warp again.
Let's do the time-warp again.

Columbia
Well I was walking down the street
just a-having a think
When a snake of a guy gave me an
evil wink.
He shook-a me up, he took me by surprise.
He had a pickup truck, and the
devil's eyes.
He stared at me and I felt a change.
Time meant nothing, never would again.

All
Let's do the time-warp again.

In the velvet darkness
Of the blackest night
Burning bright
There's a guiding star

from

The Nightmare before Christmas

There are few who'd deny, at what I do I am the best
For my talents are renowned far and wide
When it comes to surprises in the moonlit night
I excel without ever even trying
With the slightest little effort of my ghostlike charms
I have seen grown men give out a shriek
With the wave of my hand, and a well-placed moan
I have swept the very bravest off their feet
Yet year after year, it's the same routine
And I grow so weary of the sound of screams
And I, Jack, the Pumpkin King
Have grown so tired of the same old thing
Oh, somewhere deep inside of these bones
An emptiness began to grow
There's something out there, far from my home
A longing that I've never known
I'm the master of fright, and a demon of light
And I'll scare you right out of your pants
To a guy in Kentucky, I'm Mister Unlucky
And I'm known throughout England and France
And since I am dead, I can take off my head
To recite Shakespearean quotations
No animal nor man can scream like I can
With the fury of my recitations
But who here would ever understand
That the Pumpkin King with the skeleton grin
Would tire of his crown, if they only understood
He'd give it all up if he only could
Oh, there's an empty place in my bones
That calls out for something unknown
The fame and praise come year after year
Does nothing for these empty tears

The Nightmare Before Christmas

[SHADOW]
Boys and girls of every age
Wouldn't you like to see something strange?

[SIAMESE SHADOW]
Come with us and you will see
This, our town of Halloween

[PUMPKIN PATCH CHORUS]
This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Pumpkins scream in the dead of night

[GHOSTS]
This is Halloween, everybody make a scene
Trick or treat till the neighbors gonna die of fright
It's our town, everybody screm
In this town of Halloween

[CREATURE UNDER THE BED]
I am the one hiding under your bed
Teeth ground sharp and eyes glowing red

[MAN UNDER THE STAIRS]
I am the one hiding under yours stairs
Fingers like snakes and spiders in my hair

[CORPSE CHORUS]
This is Halloween, this is Halloween

[VAMPIRES]
Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!
In this town we call home
Everyone hail to the pumpkin song

[MAYOR]
In this town, don't we love it now?
Everybody's waiting for the next surprise

[CORPSE CHORUS]
Round that corner, man hiding in the trash cam
Something's waiting no to pounce, and how you'll...

[HARLEQUIN DEMON, WEREWOLF & MELTING MAN]
Scream! This is Halloween
Red 'n' black, slimy green

[WEREWOLF]
Aren't you scared?

[WITCHES]
Well, that's just fine
Say it once, say it twice
Take a chance and roll the dice
Ride with the moon in the dead of night

[HANGING TREE]
Everybody scream, everbody scream

[HANGED MEN]
In our town of Halloween!

[CLOWN]
I am the clown with the tear-away face
Here in a flash and gone without a trace

[SECOND GHOUL]
I am the "who" when you call, "Who's there?"
I am the wind blowing through your hair

[OOGIE BOOGIE SHADOW]
I am the shadow on the moon at night
Filling your dreams to the brim with fright

[CORPSE CHORUS]
This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!

Take a look at how you hold the oboe and where the fingers go.In all wind instruments the left hand is higher than the right hand. So the oboe is no exception.

This oboe player would have to know fingering patterns to get the various sounds . This picture below has the fingering patterns written in one chart. It is always useful to have a fingering chart on hand to look any fingering you have forgotten, especially the notes you play infrequently.

A C, an E-flat, and a G go into a bar. The bartender says: "Sorry, but we don't serve minors." So, the E-flat leaves, and the C and the G have an open fifth between them.

After a few drinks, the fifth is diminished and the G is out flat. An F comes in and tries to augment the situation, but is not sharp enough.

A D comes into the bar and heads straight for the bathroom saying, "Excuse me. I'll just be a second."

An A comes into the bar, but the bartender is not convinced that this relative of C is not a minor. Then the bartender notices a B-flat hiding at the end of the bar and exclaims: "Get out now! You're the seventh minor I've found in this bar tonight."

The E-flat, not easily deflated, comes back to the bar the next night in a 3-piece suit with nicely shined shoes. The bartender (who used to have a nice corporate job until his company downsized) says: "You're looking sharp tonight, come on in! This could be a major development."

This proves to be the case, as the E-flat takes off the suit, and everything else, and stands there au natural.

Eventually, the C sobers up, and realizes in horror that he's under a rest.

The C is brought to trial, is found guilty of contributing to the diminution of a minor, and is sentenced to 10 years of DS without Coda at an upscale correctional facility.

On appeal, however, the C is found innocent of any wrongdoing, even accidental, and that all accusations to the contrary are bassless.

The bartender decides, however, that since he's only had ten or so patrons, the sop rano out in the bathroom, and everything has become alto much treble, he needs a rest—and closes the bar

Take a look at how you hold the bassoon and where your hands should go. In all wind instruments the left hand is higher than the right hand. So the bassoon is no exception.

Trumpet

French Horn

Philip Farkas was born to non musical parents on March 5, 1914 and died December 21, 1992. He was the principal horn player in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for many years and left in 1960 to join the music faculty at Indiana University Bloomington. He wrote The Art of French Horn Playing which is a great book for horn players.

Here is one persons review.

"The methods and suggestions in this book are pinpoint accurate. Among the Horn world, I would have to say this is the most popular and recommended book. The book varies to all subjects of music and gives great pointers. If you have any trouble playing the Horn, this book has something for you."

People have reported that the french horn is more difficult than most brass to play because it requires good pitch recognition and has a more difficult mouthpiece. Also, some people believe that it is easier to master the french horn if you have played another instrument especially another brass instrument. Other people believe that if you are prepared to put in the effort and practise then it does not matter if the freanch horn is your first or second ( or.... instrument ) as your determination will help you succeed, especially if you pick up a book like "Art Of French Horn Playing" to help you.

Also as not so many people play the french horn as instruments like the trumpet, violin, flute, clarinet and guitar, then it will be easier to progress into orchestras, bands etc. These other instrumentalists will most likely have to audition and even if you are a very good player can miss out due to the large numbers who play.
Military Band

A military band is a group of people that perform musical duties for military functions, usually for the armed forces. They also play at military funeral ceremonies. A typical military band consists mostly of wind and percussion instrument. The conductor of a band commonly bears the title of Bandmaster or Director of Music.

Music played by a military band is ceremonial and marching music including the national anthems and patriotic songs of not only their own nation but others as well. Military bands play music whilst still and moving.

There are different types of trumpet. The most common trumpet is the trumpet in B flat. Most composers will produce music for this instrument. However ther are other trumpets in variable keys.

There is a trumpet in:
~ low F - a contralto trumpet used for some Russian music
~ low C - a bass trumpet with a deep sound like a horn and built for the orchestral music in Wagner's series of operas, The Ring of the Nibelungs
~ in D - also known as the Bach Trumpet often made with a straight tube
~ in high D - used in some works by Stravinsky and Ravel
~ in high F - another instrument used for the rapid trumpet music of Bach.

|: Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! :|

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! :|

For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
|: Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! :|

The kingdom of this world
Is become the kingdom of our Lord,
And of His Christ, and of His Christ;
And He shall reign for ever and ever,
For ever and ever, forever and ever,

King of kings, and Lord of lords,
|: King of kings, and Lord of lords, :|
And Lord of lords,
And He shall reign,
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings, forever and ever,
And Lord of lords,
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

And He shall reign forever and ever,
|: King of kings! and Lord of lords! :|
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings! and Lord of lords!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!

Many choirs sing the Messiah including the Hallelujah Chorus all over the world.

<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=ha058-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B0001KL4OU&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

People have also arranged it into their own style eg Mervyn Warren, who was a member of the all male sextet Take 6, arranged and produced an updated gospel version. It is performed by a choir of all-star gospel, contemporary Christian, Rhythm and Blues and jazz singers, along with several actors and conducted by Quincy Jones.

Personal Review:
This version of the Hallelujah Chorus conducted by Quincy Jones is a great improvement to the original Hallelujah Chorus because of its gospal singing and upbeat rhythem. I prefer this version more than the original because of the rhythmic difference and the change of instruments eg. Piano, Trumpet, Drum Kit.

<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=ha058-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B000002LUJ&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

What Someone Else Thought of this version
"The best masterpiece, however is the Hallelujah Chorus. It must be played loud, in the house, in the car, in the office, or anywhere else. It is the most inspiring music I have ever heard. Somewhere, Handel is smiling and marvelling at what has come from the wonder which he penned two centuries ago.

Everyone should own this disc!"

Therefore you need to protect your ears with some ear plugs. If you continue to play without ear protection then it is possible to end up with Tinnitus which is simply ringing in the ear. And this ringing could be constantly.

If you play in a metal band then you need inspiration. This could be by Listening to Other Metal Bands and wearing the band t-shirts.

For example Australian Metalcore Bands such as:
~ I Killed the Prom Queen

I Killed The Prom Queen (initally called Child Left Burning ) was formed in 2000 and are from Adelaide, South Australia. They were one of the first Australian metalcore bands to reach a wider audience. They are vegans and are against animal cruelty.
The photo represents members of The Hampshire Recorder Sinfonia, one of a handful of recorder orchestras in the United Kingdom. The group consists of a range of ages from school aged to retired who love to play music together. They meet weekly and perform at concerts. Look at the range of recorders played.

Spot the difference

VIOL FAMILY

These are a group of bowed, string instruments developed in the Renaissance period ( 14th to 16th centuries ) and then superceded by the violin or string family. However the instruments are revived today for performance of early music.

Viols came in four different sizes, just like the modern string family and were called treble, alto tenor and bass. A group of viols was called a consort or chest which usually consisted of six instruments. A wealthy family often had a chest of viols.

They resembled that of a later violin but had flat back, ridges called frets, and C-shaped soundholes. Notice this difference in the above pictures of the violone and double bass.

They usually had six strings but some had five strings eg french viols.

The bow had a large outward curve and was held above the hand as opposed to the violin where the bow was held below the hand. Fingers controlled the tension of the horse-hair.

All viols were played downwards with the smaller ones resting on the knees and the larger ones resting between the legs. They produced a thin tone.

In the 18th century, the violin took over from the VIOL as people preferred the louder sounds that it produced.

If you are interested in making sounds on the DOUBLE BASS then you need an INSTRUMENT and SHEET MUSIC
Here are just a few.
Jean-Pierre Duport (1741-1818), Pablo Casals (1876-1973), Pierre Fournier (1906-1986) ,Jacqueline du Pré (1945-1987), Julian Lloyd Webber (1951) picture to right

Cello sounds can be heard in a variety of settings which gives the player interesting music to play. You can find cellists playing
~ in the orchestra: there are a variety of different orchestras - a symphony orchestra has 8 - 12 players
~ as a soloist : in concerto with orchestral backing or on own
~ in chamber music : traditional string quartets and other ensembles like trios, quintets etc
~ popular and jazz music: this is less common than classical music
~ bluegrass and folk music

If you have not got a cello you may want to learn to create some great sounds or know someone who does.
Violins vary in quality and a violinist varies the wrist movement as he or she presses on the strings and on the way the strings are stopped. Hence the tone or sound-colour varies depending on instrument and player.

If a player wants a warm tone then vibrato is used ie the wavering of fingers on the strings. If a player wants a loud, harsh sound, he plays with the bottom of the bow, called a heel. A hollow sound can be obtained by drawing the bow very near the bridge. A softer tone can be produced by placing a mute ( small piece of wood or metal that lessons string vibrations)on the bridge. An effect called pizzicato is produced by plucking the strings with the fingers instead of using the bow.

If you have a violin you are most likely using these techniques. But why not grab some MUSIC to really enjoy yourself.

If you have not got a violin you may want to learn or know someone who does.

Then you need a VIOLIN

And LESSONS

Have fun with the sound-colours of a violin.

The sopranino recorder is the smallest in the range of recorders.

The lowest note is F , one and a half octaves above middle C on the piano and hence in the key of F like the treble and bass recorders. Music is written one octave lower than it sounds. Like the bass recorder it is mainly used in consort playing.

This is the Sopranino Recorder Range
It is a relatively easy instrument to produce a sound and is taught in schools as part the music program.

The lowest note is C one octave higher than middle C. Music is written one octave lower than the sound produced. The range of notes played spans just over two octaves.

Many people learn the descant recorder for a year or two and then move on to another instrument such as the flute, clarinet, oboe or even the violin. Playing the recorder first makes learning a second instrument much easier as you have learnt the basics such as note names, note lengths and reading the notes.

As it is bigger than the descant then the finger holes are wider apart and the tone is richer and deeper.

The music is written at the pitch it is played ( not an octave lower like that of the descant recorder ).

The lowest note is no longer C but F ( the F above middle C on the piano ) and hence is in the key of F. The fingerings are the same as the descant recorder, but you play the scale of F ( F G A Bflat C D E F ) from the lowest note instead of the scale of C ( C D E F G A B C ) from the lowest note. This change of key can be confusing at first but with a little practise and time you will be able to play either instrument without thinking.

The treble recorder was the instrument used primarily for solos and orchestral parts in the days when recorders were popular.

However it sounds one octave lower than the descant recorder.

It is a much larger instrument with greater distances between the holes than the descant and treble recorders. The lowest hole is so far away that it is controlled by use of a key.

Music for the tenor recorder is written at the same pitch as the sounds produced. You can play descant recorder music because it is in the same key. It is fun playing tenor recorder in parts with others playing treble and descant instruments.
