A Tanka is a Japanese of poem similar to Haiku but very different. It adds two extra (relatively long) lines to the Haiku. However, it is not a Haiku with two extra lines. It has its own rules.

The World Children's Haiku Contest 2013-2014

JAL FOUNDATION biennially organize 'World Children’s Haiku Contest', and we are happy to announce that the 13th contest is to be held this year.

The themed of the 13th contest is DREAMS.

Through the contest, children are given the opportunity to compose haiku that will encompass their memories. The experience of composing haiku will also become a part of their pleasant memories of their childhood.

All winning haiku will be collected and published next year as an anthology titled 'Haiku By World Children'.

Haiku Competition Rules
THEME: DREAMS
AGE: Ages 15 and under (Elementary or junior high school student)　　　
COMPOSITION:

One haiku entry per child
Must be unpublished original work, either handwritten or typed.
Haiku must be written on the artwork same page.

ARTWORK:

Hand-drawn/hand-crafted original artwork by the child
Any form allowed (water/oil-colored, black and white, wood-cut print, lithograph, paper cutwork, etc)
Use A4 sized (210mm x 297mm) paper or larger
No photographs and digital images accepted.

Application form: PDF ; Excell

(Please attach this application form to the back of submitted work with glue); Note: Name, sex, age, address and contact information is required upon submission.

How Time Works in Haiku

In Chapter Two of Writing and Enjoying Haiku - A Hands-on Guide, Jane Reichhold discusses The Guide to Writing Haiku. In the second section she talks about How Time Works in Haiku. Time is very essential in Haiku, since it is supposed to capture an image. She writes

Another universally agreed upon aspect of the haiku is that it is written in the present tense, so the reader has the feeling that the observed event is happening right now. In truth, one cannot write about the present, since one is always the observe setting down something that occurred in the past, even if it was only a few seconds ago. The feeling is so strong that all we truly have is the present this very moment, that when we begin to think about the past, the present, and the future, we either come to the conclusion that "now" does not exist (because it had already become the past) or that there is no past nor future but only a continuous "now." [36]
