•    If you want a reddish tint to your hair, comb cranberry juice through it.  Beet juice can also be used to make your hair redder.

First of all, there are temporary hair colour dyes.  These generally wash out after a few weeks, although some will stay longer.  If you’re using a dark hair colour dye on blonde hair, for example, it may take more washes than the instructions say before it comes completely out.  These dyes are generally used by actors, around Halloween, and by those looking for a short-term change.

Permanent hair colour dye, on the other hand, is not going to wash out very easily.  In fact, it’s not going to come out at all!  This type of hair colour can only be removed by bleaching your hair or by waiting for your hair to grow out and then cutting off the dyed part.  Before you apply a permanent hair colour dye, you’re going to want to be certain it’s the colour you want since there’s no going back.  Most people recommend you test the dye on a small part of your hair that can easily be cut off before doing all of your hair.  This way, you’ll see the colour result and you’ll discover if you are allergic to the dye (some people are).

However, there is one issue here: dark or black hair dye is much more permanent than other colors.  In fact, even the non-permanent, wash out black hair dye tends to hang around for much longer.  This means that even if you dye your hair black and then want to go back to your natural hair color, it may be all but impossible.  You might end up bleaching your hair, in fact, to get the dark color out of it.

Another issue with dark hair is that your roots, especially if your natural color is very light, are going to show.  This means you’ll either need to touch up your dye job on a regular basis or deal with two-toned hair.  The good news, of course, is that as your hair grows, you can trim away the darker hair, and eventually, you’ll be blonde again…if you have the patience for that!

1. Henna hair coloring products are available at most places where other hair coloring products are sold. Choose the type that best meets how you want your hair to look.

2. Allow yourself plenty of time. Applying henna is a messy, time consuming process.

3. Put on plastic or latex gloves. Wear protective clothing, such as an apron.

4. Mix the henna according to package directions.

5. Work the henna into your hair.

6. Quickly wipe the henna off the forehead, ears, face and any other area where it is not desired.

7. Pile the hair on top of the head and cover it with plastic wrap or a large plastic bag. Secure the plastic with a clip if needed.

8. Use a blow dryer for more intense color.

9. Leave the henna in your hair for at least one hour.

12. Clean the area where the henna was applied. Stains on counters and tabletops can be removed with bleach.

Be aware that the hair color will darken over several days. Subsequent applications of henna build on the original color to become a more intense shade of red.

While everyone’s hair reacts differently to henna, in general: blondes become strawberry blond, red hair will become more vibrant, brown hair will take on a coppery tone, black hair will become a dark chestnut brown, gray hair will become orange. Henna should not be used on hair that has been artificially colored or treated.

Salman Khan has recently celebrated his 43rd birthday and a reporter commented on the lack of gray hairs sprouting from his head, despite his age and he replied with a cheeky wink and a grin, “It’s all down to hair dye!”
