Spoiler: this is not your regular blowdry tutorial.

I can’t stop touching my hair right now. It feels so soft and bouncy that I’m distracting myself just running my fingers through it. But here’s the thing: this isn’t just another blowdry. Today, I’m sharing my first impressions of the brand new Dyson Supersonic r, and walking you through the little blowdry trick that gives you the kind of volume you only thought existed in ‘80s shampoo ads.

The Unboxing: Sleek, Smart, and Surprisingly Light

Let’s start with the Dyson itself.

The Supersonic r arrives in eco-friendly cardboard packaging, which is an excellent start. Inside, you’ll find the classic Dyson attachments (like my beloved diffuser) but with a few clever upgrades.

The first thing I noticed? The weight. This dryer feels so light because a lot of the heavy tech has been shifted into the plug. This does make the plug pretty chonky (think laptop charger vibes), but in your hand the dryer feels like holding a hairbrush. If you’ve ever done a full blowdry and ended with aching arms, you’ll know why this is a big deal.

Each attachment snaps on magnetically, and has its own RFID code. The dryer reads the code and automatically sets the power and heat to the optimal levels for that specific attachment. No more fiddling with button, it just knows. This makes using the flyaway tamer especially easy, and more importantly, safer for your hair. 

I also noticed a slight redesign of the diffuser and I’m genuinely excited to test this properly.

First Blast: Powerful, but Controlled

When I turned it on for the first time, I expected a mini hurricane. Instead, it delivered this really concentrated, directional airflow that’s powerful but not chaotic. My hair was drying fast, but it didn’t feel like it was being whipped around. 

The Supersonic r feels… calm. Controlled. Dare I say, zen.

The Secret to a Voluminous Blowdry

Now for the fun part: the reverse blowdry trick that’s going to change the way you style your hair forever.

When it comes to a blowdry, most of us were taught to start at the bottom and work our way up. It’s the way professional stylists work. Except, when you do your own hair, it’s too tiring. Your arms are exhausted, the bottom layers and are smooth, but the front gets the least attention. And that’s the part everyone sees!

So here’s the hack: start at the front, and blow dry everything forward over your face.

Yep, you’ll look ridiculous, like a windblown Cousin Itt situation, but give it a try because it’s so worth it. 

Here’s my step-by-step to walk you through the whole process:

1. Clip your hair up in sections. I use claw clips because they don’t leave creases, but Invisibobble elastics work too.
2. Start with your fringe or front layers. Take a small section at the very front, round-brush it forward, then clip it out of the way.
3. Keep working in small sections, always drying the hair forward over your face.
4. Once you’ve done the front and crown, you can get a bit lazier with the back. Nobody sees it as much, and the volume from the front will carry the whole look.

Drying forward like this gives you that dreamy root lift and long-lasting body. When you flip your hair back into place, it has that effortless “just left the salon” bounce.

Tips for the Best Results

• Heat protectant always. Your hair is most vulnerable when wet, so protect before you blast.
• Comb, don’t brush, wet hair. A wide-tooth comb prevents unnecessary stretching and breakage.
• Work in vertical sections. Especially if you have thick hair like mine, this helps the inside layers dry properly.
• Don’t stress about the back. Seriously. Focus your energy on the front and crown.

And here’s my secret weapon: do this blowdry at night. Clip your hair up loosely, go to sleep, and wake up with day-two hair that’s already voluminous. Add a spritz of dry shampoo before bed (not in the morning) and you’ll get fresh lift at the roots.

Styling Finishers: Oil, Powder, and (Optional) Mystery Products

For the ends of my hair, I always smooth in a little treatment oil. Work it into the tips where your hair needs the most love. A tiny bit of shine serum or hair oil makes the blowdry look polished without weighing it down.

If your hair tends to fall flat, try a little volume powder or texturising spray at the roots. It will give your blowdry extra staying power.

Now, I have to admit, I’ve been testing some secret, unlabelled products as part of a judging panel (yes, it’s as fun as it sounds). I can’t reveal the brand names yet, but one of the oils smells like sweet vanilla heaven and I’m obsessed. Stay tuned on that front.

So, Is the Dyson Supersonic r Worth It?

After my first run with it, here’s my take:

• It’s incredibly light. My arms weren’t screaming after 45 minutes of wrangling thick hair.
• The attachments are clever. Automatic heat settings are such a thoughtful upgrade.
• It feels gentle yet powerful. My hair dried quickly without being blown around.
• The flyaway attachment is magic. One pass and those sneaky shorter hairs disappear into the style.

The only downside? The chunky plug. It makes traveling with it a little less sleek, but considering how lightweight the dryer itself is, it’s a sacrifice I’m happy to make.

You might be asking, what’s wrong with now? Fringes are super cool at the moment – why shouldn’t I try it now?

That’s a good question, but that’s missing the point. The real question is not about the trend (fringes are always in if you ask me) – it’s about the seasonal timing.

You see, it’s the weather that’s the real enemy of a fringe. There’s a perfect set of circumstances for when and where a fringe can enhance your life. And conversely, a specific time when bangs will ruin your life.

The perfect time to cut a fringe

The perfect time to cut a fringe is autumn.

As soon as the weather starts to cool, that’s when you should book an appointment with your hairdresser and try all kinds of fringes and bangs.

It’s best to start longer, with some curtain bangs and layers and if you’re vibing with it – book your next appointment to try a fuller, shorter fringe.

The low humidity and cooler temperatures make wearing a fringe so much easier. You can have fun learning to style your hair and experiment with different hairstyles.

The lifecycle of your fringe continues and as you start to get bored of the look, or feel like something different, you can grow out the shorter layers through winter and early spring.

This brings you clearly out of your fringe season just when it’s the worst time to have a fringe.

The worst time to cut a fringe

If you haven’t already guessed – summer is the WORST time to cut a fringe.

Humidity, sweat and heat styling tools are not a great combination. Even if you’re in your bangs era, and have your perfect styling routine ready – you are a brave soldier to endure your fringe throughout the summer.

But if you don’t have short layers and are thinking of trying a new look, summer is the worst time to start.

I know, because I’ve endured the forehead breakouts and awkward clip hairstyles as I’ve tried to persist with a new fringe in summer. Sweaty hat hair is the enemy of cool bangs. Even with my trick for avoiding hat hair. Your fringe will stick to your forehead in ways you won’t like. Take my word for it, you don’t want to go there.

Please be patient and wait for autumn – that’s the ideal fringe weather.

If you’re over your current hairstyle and really want a new look, let me recommend some long layers instead. They’re ideal for enhancing your natural hair texture and adding detail into to straight hair. They’re also easy to style and pull back in hot weather.

Affecting around 50% of women, hair loss is not talked about as often as it should be. Seeing anything from single strands to clumps left in your shower can be distressing and a knock to your confidence – neither of which we need!

But often, loss of hair is perfectly natural and healthy, so here are some answers to questions about hair loss and what amount of hair loss is normal.

How much hair loss is normal?

How much hair is normal to lose?

It’s normal to loss between 80-100 hairs per day. In fact, for some people up to 150 strands come out every day, and this is still considered normal.

If you have long hair, remember that a 100 hairs will look like a lot more when they’re wound up and all curled together than if they were flat or straight.

And bear in mind that some detached hairs can get stuck in your style, so when it comes to washing your hair, there will be a lot more hair on the shower floor than you might expect.

If you have straight hair, you’ll lose hairs all day throughout the day. They’ll fall out quite easily too, and so you might not really notice hair loss when you’re washing your hair. For curly girls, because we have a lot of tangles in our hair the loose hairs detach but they can stay in the curl.

And so it’s only once we wash our hair that we notice what looks like a lot of hair loss. Plus if you’re only washing your hair every three or four days, you should expect to see 300-400 hairs coming out in the shower.

I won’t include a photo of how much hair I’ve lost to the shower but you can see it in the video.

When should you be worried about hair loss?

If you’ve noticed a significant increase in hair loss, this is when you should start to pay attention. However, there are lots of things that can cause hair loss and most of them are fixable, so you shouldn’t be too worried.

One of the biggest triggers is stress, so worrying about it is really frustrating because it compounds the problem.

Certain deficiencies like low iron can also cause hair loss and significant weight gain or weight loss can also affect your air growth.

I have a thyroid condition and anytime my thyroid is out of balance, I can definitely tell straight away because I notice it in my hair.

If you’re noticing a significant hair-loss difference, definitely go and see your doctor, and ask for some blood tests to see if you can pinpoint the issue.

Of course, there are conditions that can’t necessarily be treated or cured, like alopecia, which can cause significant hair loss. However, I’ve linked here to a video created by Sustainable Salons that really explains some of the hard-to-ask questions about alopecia and how we can all get involved to help.

If you’re noticing hair loss, the first thing to do is not panic and know that you’re not alone. More than half of women are affected by hair loss, so just start by monitoring the situation and if you see it getting worse, please see your doctor.

I hope this has helped either allay any fears or concerns you’ve been having about this issue or at least I’ve been about to point you in the right direction.

What type of scarf to use?

The scarf featured in my video was a gift so I don’t have a link – but anything lightweight will work.

I recommend using a silk or poly scarf and to fold it into a rectangle.

Look around at what you already have, try a fabric tie belt from a dress, or a strip of fabric to create a unique hairstyle.

The print, colour and pattern of your scarf makes this hairstyle one of a kind. And you can repeat this hairstyle, changing the scarf, and it will look like a completely new hairstyle.

My scrunchies

I was around when scrunchies were first popular and I wasn’t sure if I could go back there again… but I did haha!

When my sister was a hairdresser, I would help her make scrunchies to sell at the salon. She has a huge basket full of scrunchies at the front counter and they were so popular.

In the evenings, she would sew them and I would turn the elastic through with my little kid fingers. I guess you could say it was my first job. My sister would give me a cut of sales at the end of the week.

I no longer have a sewing machine or the patience to turn the elastic through so I bought these scrunchies from Scrunchiko which is a women-owned and run Aussie company. They also kindly sent me a couple of extra scrunchies.

The velvet watercolours are really pretty – the Rosie and Daisy.

Why does no-one show you the back of their heatless waves??

I know why and I’ve got the tricks to fix it.

After a few hair fails, I’ve finally worked out the secrets to overnight curls.

You need to make sure your hair is completely dry, so if like me, your hair takes forever to dry, then I recommend allowing your hair to air dry or using a hairdryer before braiding.

Styling Tips:

• Before braiding, make sure your hair is smoothed out. I love Tangle Teezer brushes for removing knots but their new Finishing Brush is especially good for detangling and smoothing in one. It’s also available on Amazon here.
• Use tiny elastics to secure your braids. I normally use these but the new Invisibobble elastics seem to last a lot longer for me.
• If you have some dry ends or a few flyaways, a leave in conditioner spray is ideal for hydrating your hair and reducing frizz. I used the Kristin Ess Leave In Spray which is also available in Australia here.
• For extra dry hair or curly hair, I love how a leave in cream softens my hair and tames frizz. I use the Oribe Priming Lotion.

• Now to cover that gap at the back, styling powder is key for fine hair. If you have hair that won’t stay in place, a little sprinkle of hair powder will hold hair in place and add instant volume. I love this one and you can read more about styling powders here.
• If your roots are looking a little flat or you want to add more texture without weighing your hair down, then reach for dry shampoo. I love Batiste and if you don’t, you might be making this dry shampoo mistake.
• For defining your curls, a little serum or shine spray can make them pop. But you need to be careful you’re not just making your frizz shiny. O&M Frizzy Logic is a long time fave of mine for a reason. It smooths and adds shine but you don’t need to use much. You can find it here and here.
• The ultimate anti frizz product I’ve found to tame your part and any baby hairs is this magic stick product from Japan. I bought it overseas and am obsessed and luckily I found it online here and here.

Here’s an easy hat hairstyle tutorial that fits under your hat.

A few years ago I made a New Year’s resolution to wear more hats. It turned out to be my most successful New Year’s resolution ever.

I chose hats for a few reasons…

Firstly, resolutions never work so why take them seriously?

I was joking with friends and stated that this was “the year of hats” and it stuck.

Plus hats provide amazing sun protection and they cover your hair and scalp from environmental damage too.

Wearing hats is a bit of a mindset thing.

People say “hats don’t suit me” but I think you haven’t tried enough hats. And you haven’t given yourself permission to wear something bold.

Hats draw attention so it can feel weird wearing them at first, but it’s worth pushing through the initial awkwardness.

Everyone should wear more hats!

But how do you style your hair under a hat?

This easy hat hair tutorial is a go-to for me and was inspired by a question on Instagram.

I love when you ask questions and request tutorials. Jilly asked about a hat hairstyle she could wear in messy hair and this ticks all the boxes for me:

• I love messy hair
• This style works in dirty hair
• This hairstyle is also great for wavy and curly hair

Things to consider when styling hair under a hat

• Where does your hat sit? ie does it cover your hairline?
• Where does the band of yourhat sit at the back? The occipital bone is that bone you can feel at the back of your head. Hats usually sit around this but some can be higher or lower.
• How often will you be taking your hat off?

Styling tips

If you have thick or long hair:

• Use hair elastics or hair bungees to secure your hair before creating the twists

If you have fine hair:

• Don’t twist too tightly! Flatten the twists out to make your hair look thicker

Where to find hats

I bought this hat on a trip to Cuba and the boater hat was a gift so I’m not sure where it’s from.

I hate these kinds of answers, so I’ve done the shopping around to find similar ones for you if you’re looking for a new hat.
