Every six weeks for years sometimes from childhood it happens. What would make a person bounded in this way for years? The answer is hair relaxers. Most people of African descent have tightly coiled hair that most people call “nappy”. Some people take the statement of nappy as negative whereas some people embrace it. Black people from all different countries relax their hair, because they are afraid if they don’t they will not be accepted by corporate settings and sometimes their own family and friends.

Why not keep the status quo and do what most Black people do and relax or what some people call it “perm” your hair?

Hair relaxers have harmful health effects.
Chemical burns
Irritation
Red scalp
Receding hairline

The chemicals enter your hair shaft and break protein bonds inside, causing curly hair to go limp which gives the straight appearance. No bonds are re-formed in the process. So relaxers work, because they break the bonds that strengthen the hair. A lot of black women that have no visible hairline have over processed their hair. Over processing is common and easy to do with relaxers.

What are some the ingredients in a hair relaxer?

The same ingredient that cleans out the clog in your sink is the same ingredient used in relaxers.

Sodium hydroxide is used in lye relaxers.
Calcium hydroxide is used in no lye relaxers.
Hydrogen peroxide, which is a weak acid and used as a disinfectant because of its bleaching agent.
Phosphoric acid and is considered to be a health hazard questionable of neurotoxicant, respiratory toxicant, and skin and sense organ toxicant.
Ammonium hydroxide which maybe the cause of respiratory toxins.

Okay, think about this why do I, or the beautician need gloves to put something on my scalp? Why are some people trying to “fix” something that they were born with?

Some people may think so what about the chemicals. Or maybe they may think I’ve been “perming” my hair this long why should I stop. NO MATTER HOW YOUR RELAXED HAIR LOOKS TO YOU IT IS NOT HEALTHY HAIR. You say my hair won’t grow no matter what I do to it, or black hair doesn’t grow. Consider this there is a lot more people with dread locked hair that are down their back then relaxed hair people. How much money will you save a year not getting relaxers? Think about how free you will feel not getting that painful relaxer every 6 to 8 weeks. Getting in a pool whenever you want, of course you still have to be careful with the pool chemicals that will get in your hair; although not as much with natural hair. I would suggest to deep condition your natural hair after getting in the pool.

Going from relaxed hair to natural hair

The most common thoughts when you decide to go natural are:

What do I do with my hair?
Do I just go ahead and cut my hair?
Do I hang on to my relaxed hair for a while, while my natural hair grows and have two textures?

The choice can be different for everyone. A person does have to be extra careful with their hair when they have two textures on their hair, because your hair can have breakage. From personal experience I wore twist (using two strands of hair putting one strand over the other strand) when I had two textures on my hair the relaxed hair and the natural hair. I also started to “no poo” my hair, which means you wash your hair with conditioner rather than shampoo. Shampoo can be really harsh on black hair unless you have a natural shampoo. A couple of products I use are rasta Jamaican and “Shea Moisture”nubianheritage.

Hola Chicas,

As promised, I'm elaborating a bit on my night time pineapple routine. I don't do this every night. Other nights I just sleep with it out, sweeping my hair (on the side I'm laying on) over the top of my satin pillow so that I don't smoosh the curls. I like this 'out' routine as well, as it usually results in shrinkier, poofier results. I guess it just depends on my mood.

On nights that I decide to pineapple:

I search for thirty minutes to find my one and only black satin scrunchy. I like scrunchies because they don't leave indentations in the hair.

I then bend over at the waist, and loosely gather my hair at the crown of my head. I pull my hair through twice to make it secure, but not tight.

Then it's off to bed-- tossing and turning for several hours until the baby stops kicking long enough to let me fall asleep. I don't use a scarf... I just sleep on my satin pillow case.

The next morning, I take it down and shake vigorously. My hair, like many divas in the 4a/3c category, has to be coaxed back down.... it would be perfectly happy standing up in a Don King-esque style. So, I use the same scrunchy to gather it all at my nape while I workout, eat breakfast, shower, and dress for the day. Before I head out the door, I shake it out and it's usually just the way I like it :) **This last step helps for when I've slept with my hair out too.

The key to the pineapple routine is to keep the scrunchy loose. A too tight scrunchy could lead to flat, stretched out, sad looking curls. Trust me.

In the United States, the hair-goods market has three segments: the market for Caucasian women, the market for African-American women and the market for men’s hairpieces for both races. As an aside, it is also becoming popular in the men’s market to have transplantation surgery these days. Despite the recent economic recession, the hair-goods business seems to be comparatively steady even though an economic shock had occurred in 2008. The reason why the hair-goods business can be steady is that it is a necessary item for consumers who need an additional piece of hair and/or an extension of hair to make them more beautiful and instantly satisfied while not paying too much money. The Caucasian woman’s hair-goods business has especially been keeping reasonable mark-ups and profits during the past five decades, even though a portion of profit is gearing downward due to strong competition and the recent economic situation. What we should learn from the Caucasian hair-goods business, along with learning how to deal with Caucasian clients including the Hispanic population, will be the key to our success from now on. How wonderful would it be if beauty supply owners could turn that new demand into repeating customers?
How to be Successful in the Caucasian Wig Business
In the past five decades since synthetic hair-goods have been launched into the USA market, the prices for Caucasian women’s products have been kept at higher prices compared to those for Afro-American’s. There could be several reasons why Caucasian hair-goods products are being sold at higher prices than Afro-American products. The rest of this article looks into that background and tries to find the reasons why the market structure has turned out so, from the viewpoint of a synthetic fiber manufacturer.
►Maintain reasonable prices and profits, and avoid price competition. First of all, there is a difference and gap in financial background. Generally, according to income statics in America, Caucasians have been earning more income than Afro-Americans. Of course, there are many exceptions nowadays, though.
►Consistent product quality, higher quality assurance. Consumers remain more loyal to quality. Secondly, it is the product quality issue. For example, there are many new versions of hair-goods in the Afro-American women’s market, but the biggest issue today is that plenty of cheaper hair-goods made with human hair are overflowing. Even if the product tag indicates 100% human-hair-made product, those cheaper products are made with a mixture of a few percentage of human hair and a major portion of high-heat resistant synthetic fiber. No one can make a reasonable profit in the long run by selling such an item. Aside from that, the amount of effort it takes to import products from overseas, deliver such items to retail shops and sell to customers is the same for the Caucasian hair-goods market and the Afro-American hair-goods market.
►Caucasian sales outlets and product sourcing. What else are the differences between the Caucasian hair-goods market and the Afro American hair-goods market? They would be the different sales outlets, their historical backgrounds and pricing structures. This article will describe the U.S. Caucasian hair products market and also will explain the major differences of the products mainly in terms of the size of the Caucasian market. What is the Market Size of the Caucasian Women’s Market?
The Caucasian Women’s hair-goods market in the USA is to be estimated at around $700 million per year at the retail level for products including wigs, hairpieces and extensions. (Please refer to the first graph-chart)

The above chart shows the estimated retail sales amount in 2010 by sales outlet with percentages as; wig shop (43%), mail order (22%), internet (14%), chain store (7%), TV shopping (7%), others (7%).
• Full Wigs: About 60% of the total of $700 million (est.) in retail sales in 2010 is from the sale of full wigs, which is very popular among Caucasian women. About 25% is from the hair extension business, which has been growing very fast in past ten years based on steady demand from high and middle class women and a wider consumer age range than that of full wig wearers. The rest, 15% of sales, is from hairpieces which have shown a certain percentage of declines compared to previous years. The total sales amount has been increased by a flat percentage compared to the previous year, but the industry is now struggling to have appropriate and steady suppliers from the Far East. Today, major suppliers for the Caucasian market are located in Indonesia where it seems to have a better environment and conditions compared to China in terms of hiring labor, the cost of labor, local logistics, government regulations, etc.
• Hairpieces: Besides the full wig, there are hairpieces and hair extensions for which there is a demand in the Caucasian market. The hairpiece business was very popular and profitable until 2-3 years ago when there was a decline. The marketing using celebrity endorsers was very much a successful campaign. Many consumers paid for them even though the prices of multiple-piece clip-ins were over $65 per set for synthetic-fiber-made products, and over $150 per set for human-hair-made products, in the first and second year of the products’ launching. Apparently consumers were satisfied with those products and enjoyed the quick image changes that their use enabled. Unfortunately, serious delivery problems from China during the most important period made the demand non-stabilized. In addition to the unexpected situation, the demand declined due to the economic situation starting at the end of 2007. Of course, the company is exerting all possible efforts to make up for the sales decrease.
• Hair Extensions: Regarding the hair extension business for Caucasian women, it is a still growing business and the number of companies is also increasing. The extensions business was started less than about two decades ago as a “high-end niche market”. The main customers were movie stars, singers and other high-end customers who could pay for at least $10 per one strand of human hair glued to her hair. (This price includes the hair stylist’s service charge, which is about double the price of a hairpiece.) The second chart shows this category’s hair sales, and does not include the service charge of hair stylists.

In contrast to the Afro-American market, the Caucasian market is much more synthetic-fiber-oriented and the portion of synthetic products is about 71% vs. human hair products, which is 29%. However, human hair is more heavily used in the extensions business at about 90%, and the rest is the use of synthetic fibers. This is the most profitable business among the three Caucasian market categories, but it is more labor-intensive to make its flat *PU base extensions or keratin-tipped hair strands, in various shapes or just in bulk form. *PU: Poly Urethane.

Despite whatever anyone may say about Beyonce — you can never say that she’s boring, or anything less than fabulous. From the moment I caught a glimpse of her video for Countdown, I automatically liked it — not just for the myriad references to 60′s fashion and style but also for the MAKEUP.

There are some killer makeup moments in this video, bellas!

I especially fell in LOVE with the yellow cat’s eye you see in this photo right here. During Bey’s video she transitions throughout several colors of the same look, but it returns to yellow – such a strong power color that comes to life on brown skin!

Over on Centric TV’s blog they break down the look, product by product. Here on Afrobella, I turned to one of my favorite makeup artists, the incomparable Tia Dantzler, to get guidance on how to achieve the yellow cat eye look!

The makeup in this video put me in the mind of Twiggy who was known as the Queen of mod in the 60′s. I love a well defined eye because it draws all of your attention straight up to the eyes. Here’s a breakdown of Beyonce’s Countdown cat eye video look:

Start off by defining your brows to bring shape and to define your eyes.

Next, use a base coat over your entire eye to ensure your eye makeup pops and has staying power.

Using a flat short haired brush dip your brush in your shadow and pack the color on your lids.

Take a long haired brush and blend a neutral color into the crease to avoid harsh lines.

Using an angle brush and a black gel liner create a well shaped extended cat eye from inner to outer. Use the same technique on the lower lash line with an exaggerated cat eye. There should be space between the upper and lower wing.

Take a light colored eyeliner right on the water line to really open up the eyes.

Next, take your angle brush and gel liner and draw a line right above the crease starting with the wing working your way into the inner crease.

Take a softer grey then blend that line to give off a smoky but well defined eye.

Finish off with two coats of mascara to define and curl your lashes.

Alexa - who shared her top five beauty essentials with us last month - rarely deviates from her tousled lob, but when she does, she opts for a '60s inspired style that's packed with volume such as this. It's easy to replicate. Start off by spraying your hair with dry shampoo to get a matte texture, then part hair in the centre, sectioning off a fringe that goes about four inches into your part. Pinning this aside, separate the rest of the hair in two sections horizontally using the ear as a guide. Backcomb the top section to create volume and then begin to style all the hair (save for the fringe) into a chignon at the nape of the neck. Unpin the front and pull a few strands over the backcombed height to ensure it doesn't look messy. Finish with hairspray.

In this week's Sunday New York Times, makeup artist Tina Turnbow explains how to get perfect cherry-stained lips for fall (a big trend this season):

Start with a moisturizing lip balm as your base. Turnbow prefers Clark's Botanicals in Madge Mauve (buy it online).

Line the lips and color them in with a cherry-colored lip pencil. Turnbow suggests Laura Mercier's lip pencil in Luscious Very Berry (buy it online).

For the face, she keeps it simple with a moisturizing concealer she loves from Koh Gen Do (check it out online, it is pricey but will last forever and you won't need foundation).

If you need a pop of color on cheeks (I'm naturally rosy-cheeked), you can dot a bit of the lip balm.

MYTH: SPF is only for summer time.

FACT: This is the biggest myth out there. Even though the sun is shining the strongest in the summer time, it doesn’t mean the sun isn’t out for 365 days a year. Even on cloudy days, the sun can be damaging to unprotected skin. How? UVA rays penetrate even the thickest of clouds, and act as one of the most, if not THE most potent aging factors in the environment. Use a SPF everyday of the year and in 10/20 years you and your baby-soft skin will thank me.

MYTH: “I don’t need to wash my face tonight. I’m not wearing any makeup. And it’s cold… I haven’t been sweating or anything!”

FACT: Even if you’ve been makeup free on a chilly fall day, dirt, oil and environmental residue can make you break out. Not a good enough reason? Think of it this way… all of the air you’ve hit throughout the day has particles in it, sticking to your skin. Once you lay down on your pillowcase, this dirt is transferred, and ready to breed bacteria. GROSS! MYTH: “I’m broke from holiday spending and thus can’t afford quality skincare that is expensive.”

A braid or plait is a structure of hair that is made by weaving three or more strands of hair together. The easiest braid to make is when you weave three groups of hair strands together to form a stronger rope of hair. You can form different types of braids by combining different odd numbers of groups of hair strands such as the two five-strand dutch braids in the picture that have been combined to form one five strand dutch braid, for example.

History
- Hair braiding is at least 5000 years old, if not older. Hair braiding in Africa can be traced back as far as 3500 BCE. It has been a large part of many cultures all around the world including Africa, the Americas, Asia, Egypt and even Europe. In Africa hair braiding was a social event among women. Young girls began by having their female relatives braid their hair, and then they in turn practiced on their friends and younger relatives until they had learned the many elaborate styles of African hair braiding. In renaissance Europe, French braiding was practiced to keep the hair as clean as possible when it wasn't always an option to bathe as often as you might like. In the Americas, Aztec women would take strips of colorful cloth and braid the strips into their hair and wind the braids around their head. Finally, hair braiding in Egypt was done on wigs that Egyptian royalty wore.
Function
- Braiding can be more than one thing. In Africa, braiding is still an opportunity to socialize, and in some cases where particular styles are tribe specific, it can have the function of passing down a tradition. In Europe, braiding was practiced to keep the hair clean, and people still do that today when they don't have time to wash their hair. Having your hair braided keeps your hair out of the way while you are working. This was one of the primary functions for hair braiding among many Native Americans along with helping to keep it neat and clean. Native Americans also took it a step further in some tribes by wrapping their braids in animal skin to protect their hair.
  Hair braiding can also have a cultural function. Among the Hopi tribe, only married women wore their hair braided. In modern times, hair braiding has become a function of style, rather than anything else.
Types
- There are hundreds of different types of braids. Some of the most common include the English braid, which uses a three strand plait and starts at the nape of the neck; the French braid which instead of starting at the nape of the neck starts at the hairline and travels back and down weaving strands in along the way; a Dutch braid which is an inverted French braid that weaves strands under rather than over giving the braid an almost embossed look; Swiss braids which are English braids that are then wrapped around the head and pinned down; multi-strand braids which are when the weave is with more than three, five, nine or any odd number of strands and finally Crown braids which are braids that are woven like French braids but around the crown of the head.
Advantages
- Having your hair braided can help your hair look beautiful. It also protects your hair by helping to prevent split ends and can also save you money if you choose to braid your hair yourself or have a loved one do it for you rather than spending time in a salon having your hair done. If you choose to braid your hair on a regular basis, you give your hair a break from the daily washing that can be harmful to your hair.
Misconceptions
- Braiding doesn't obviate the need to wash your hair. It is important to wash your hair regularly when you have braids, such as cornrows. Braids needn't be tight to be effective. Braids that are too tight can cause headaches as well as damage hair, breaking the hair and pull the hair follicle.
