When we first saw the Mini Dew Ranch last fall the outdoors were still hanging onto some green from the summer. The trees still had a lot of leaves and they were still mostly green but as it was the end of the season there was not a bloom anywhere on the property. Not long after moving in, winter struck hard and by the beginning of March I was beginning to believe I would forever need to wear snow boots just to get to the car.

After a few days of rain most of the snow melted and when things finally warmed up we found some excellent surprises in the yard. There is a small patch of crocus behind the house that had me singing “Clusters of Crocus” for days. Of course, they didn’t last long as the kids ran around the yard and picked them.

One day I took Baby Cashew out and let him crawl around the yard while I looked for new greens. The grass was still brown and muddy in spots but Cashew loved free-ranging and watching the bigger kids and their friends run all around.

When ODD came home later that evening we walked around and speculated about what might be coming up. We recognized iris but that’s about it. We have a ton of leafy shoots that look like tulips but we’ll just have to wait and see. We also have quite a lot of some kind of onion.

In the back, beyond our grass, we have a few different kinds of leafy moss stuff. They all look like they belong under water.

Then, the other day, ODD mentioned seeing a new flower on the side of the lane. I went out to find a lovely little white flower. Not knowing what it was I posted it to instagram/facebook/twitter and was told the flowers were snowdrops.

This is so cool, finding all these new things in our yard. Such happy surprises! I love where I live!

Cashew began crawling last week. I find it rather hilarious that my children cannot seem to figure out crawling right off the bat. They always come up with some freaky variation first (though Peanut continued her odd half-Mowglie crawl until she walked). Cashew’s variation involved his arms in army crawl position, then he’d plant his right toes and heave himself forward. It wasn’t terribly efficient but it did get him where he wanted to go for a while. He finally figured out the real deal on Friday and has been zooming all around the house ever since. Last night ODD installed the ugly baby gate for the stairs. Now I get to count the days until it comes down. In the mean time the bigger kids think it’s endless fun to act like they’re in jail.

Now that Cashew can crawl he thinks he’s also big enough to stand up and is constantly trying to pull himself up on things. While I’m in the bathroom getting ready for the day I put him in the tub so he doesn’t unload every drawer in the place. He even pulls himself to standing there. Doesn’t he look proud of himself?

The other night, while brushing Peanut’s teeth I noticed she had something funny going on. Upon closer inspection I found she had a grown-up tooth coming in behind her baby tooth. I had a similar thing going on when I was a kid so I didn’t find it that strange. They’re like shark teeth. At least Peanut’s baby tooth in front was already loose and didn’t need to be pulled like mine were. After a couple of days it came out and she couldn’t have been more excited to lose her first tooth. She wrote a note to the tooth fairy asking her to leave the tooth so she could take it to school the next day to show her class. The tooth fairy kindly obliged.

Something possessed me to make sugar cookies the other day. I hate sugar cookies. I saw a new cookie recipe, though, and for some reason thought maybe I’d like them this time. Nope. I still didn’t. I did finally pick up those cute woodland creature cookie cutters from IKEA, though, so even though I hated eating them they did look really cute.

I registered Wingnut for 4 day preschool next year. I think I’m as excited (if not more) about it as he is. And he’s really excited.

It snowed again this weekend. Let’s not talk about it.

I’m slowly but surely getting back in the swing of making dinner somewhat regularly. I got in a terribly non-cooking funk though the move last fall and am only just coming out of it. I’ve missed good, whole food.

When visiting my parents, Peanut and Wingnut usually hang out in my brother’s room as he plays movies they love on endless cycles and doles out candy like Willy Wonka. For Christmas he added a short table to his furniture collection so my kids can sit in their little chairs and color or eat more easily. I also think he likes that it’s kind of a barrier between them and his stuff but he will neither confirm nor deny this accusation.

A couple of weeks ago we were there to hear my family speak in church and spent the rest of the day visiting. Sometime that evening Peanut came out of Jazz’s room to get a drink or something and I noticed something funny going on with her hair. It’s been in need of a haircut recently so it isn’t uncommon to find crazy things going on with it but this was just off. I pulled her over to me to get a better look.

Yeah. That is cut hair.

Of course when I asked what had happened to her hair she stonewalled me. So I asked Jazz. He said he didn’t know but had seen Wingnut with the scissors earlier. Peanut has cut her hair before and, personality-wise, is more likely to cut than Wingnut so I wasn’t so sure. So I called a third witness. Wingnut very matter-of-factly informed me that Peanut, indeed, cut her own hair. I suspected as much because I couldn’t find any chunks of it anywhere and Peanut is old enough to know she would get in trouble and want to hide it someplace whereas Wingnut would probably end up parading it around.

Wingnut’s account was further confirmed by my sister. My kids were snuggling with her and Peanut, apparently feeling a bit of guilt, confessed the whole thing. She told Teeny she was coloring and the hair just kept getting in the way so she cut it off.

Really? You couldn’t have asked for a hair clip or a headband or something?

*sigh*

As part of the consequence I didn’t cut her hair for several days so she had to go to school with it. Her teacher asked me about it the second day when I picked her up. She hadn’t noticed it until the end of the day and asked Peanut about it. Peanut had told her I did it! Say, what!? Of course, her teacher knew better and gently teased her a little about it.

Funnily, Peanut doesn’t really care. She told me she likes the way it looks.

Ah, well, it was time for a haircut anyway. It’s much more layered and I still didn’t get it all blended because some of it’s just so short, but at least it will catch up more quickly with the rest. I don’t love it but it will do until it grows long enough for her pretty a-line again.

My mom claims I once cut my bangs off at the scalp when I was maybe 12 or 13. I can’t say I recall that. I remember giving it some consideration and asking her about it but I don’t remember actually going through with it. When I was maybe 3 or 4 I did cut an extension of bangs once so they went around to my ear rather than stopping at my temple. I’m sure my mom was thrilled about that one.

Did you ever cut your hair as a kid? What about your own kids? Please tell me I’m not the only one with a bigger kid still cutting her hair.
