The first lodge night in January will be dedicated to the Entered Apprentice degree of the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite as prepared by Albert Pike in the Porch and Middle Chamber. Each meeting thereafter we will go through the degrees in the order they were intended. This study will take our lodge well over a year, but it will make each meeting unique and interesting. No two meetings will be the same for the foreseeable future. Initiations, Passings and Raising are all being moved to weekends.

2013 is the year we shake things up with a new a new kid of Freemasonry for the new generation. Come join us for great friends, fellowship and fun!

Several years ago one of the brothers asked Kris, “Why did you choose Halcyon as the staging ground for your sleigh?” Bro. Kris’ face lit up with a smile as he exclaimed, “Because Halcyon is the greatest Masonic lodge in the world!” This had a very positive effect on the whole lodge. Everyone felt a deep sense of pride in being a part of such a grand organization.

This year we have a big surprise for Bro. Kris. His old sleigh was really worn out from years of rough landings, and the occasional bouncing off the wing or tail of a 747. To be honest we were becoming increasingly concerned that the sleigh might not survive its next journey.

As you can see in the photo on the left, the old sleigh is not in the best of shape. (Oh! Please don’t tell Kris that we posted this photo.)

It became our goal to build Bro. Kris a new sleigh that would make his annual ride through the skies safer and more comfortable. This was the best idea we had ever come up with until one of the more pragmatic brothers pointed out that none of us knew anything about sleigh building. Not to be deterred by lack of experience we forged ahead with the project. Our first sleigh seemed a great improvement on the original. We had started with a red convertible 1979 Cadillac Eldorado. The fact that it had wheels and shocks seemed like a great improvement from the rigid rails of the old sleigh. All was going well until the test flight. Actually, it wasn’t so much the flight as the landing. It was only after destroying the roof of the house across the street that we realized the Eldorado was too heavy to land on wooden buildings. (Oh! Please don’t tell the lady across the street that we were responsible for the giant hole in her roof. We told her it was a meteor.)

We now realized that sleigh building, like other professions, was best left to the professionals. (We do, however, provide on-site dental care as a perk for our members.)

It was then that we engaged the services of the world renowned aviation company Lockheed-Martin. At first they were somewhat surprised by our proposal, but slowly warmed up to the idea. It wasn’t long before they presented us with the plans for a new titanium alloy sleigh with seating to be hand stitched by Rolls-Royce Motors in England. It was perfect! A truly glorious sleigh built in the spirit of Christmas. The cost estimates to build it, including overruns, was staggering. How could we raise that much money?

So, in typical Masonic fashion, we formed a committee to examine each and every aspect of the project, and to evaluate how best to raise the funds needed to build the sleigh. During one of the meetings it was brought to light that Masons are closely related to the all powerful and extremely secret Illuminati, and that they would most likely be understanding of our situation, and make a sizable donation towards the building of the sleigh. Thanks to Google, within minutes we had the phone number of the good brothers over at the Illuminati, and proceeded to explain our situation. They were very helpful and immediately wired a billion dollars to help with the project.

Today, we will be presenting Bro. Kris with his new sleigh. It turned out even better than we had imagined. 2012 is going to be the best Christmas ever.

Just a few years ago the Grand Lodge of Ohio wanted to destroy this building and sell the land for condos. We fought to save it and the Bal Ingenieux was our celebration for the hard work and energy put forth by all the brothers at Halcyon and the Grand Orient USA.

Finally Freemasonry and the Arts have come together once again to create beauty for the sake of beauty itself.

From 1913 to 1946, Cleveland’s Kokoon Arts Club held an annual Bal-Masque known for pushing the limits of the day.  Built in 1931, the Halcyon Lodge was constructed by the Freemasons.  Its mix of auditoriums, ballrooms, and smaller venues makes it perfect for an event that’s part entertainment and part exploration.

Lambda Chi Alpha at Halcyon Lodge

Lambda Chi Alpha is a university fraternity started by Freemasons in the early part of the 20th century. Their rituals and philosophy are very similar to that of Freemasonry due to their Masonic heritage.

Starting in 2012 the members of Lambda Chi Alpha in the City of Cleveland have a new Masonic home at the historic West Side Masonic Temple, hosted by the brothers of Halcyon Lodge No. 498, of the Grand Orient USA. We believe the brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha represent the future of Freemasonry in the United States.

As a college student at Boston University, Bro. Warren A. Cole (Boston 1912) founded Lambda Chi Alpha on November 2, 1909, with the expressed objective purpose of bringing about the association of college students of good moral character in the various collegiate institutions within the United States and Canada; to foster a high moral and spiritual standard of life; to promote honorable friendship; to cultivate intellectual excellence; to secure for members the greatest advantages in college life; to establish brotherly love, mutual aid, close personal connection between alumni, undergraduates and colleges; and, to bind them together for mutual pleasure and interest in college, as well as after life by testing each with courage, self-control, obedience, democracy, and courtesy toward all with whom they may come in contact.

Today, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is one of the largest men’s general fraternities in North America with more than 275,000 initiated members, with nearly 200 active subsidiaries (called chapters) at colleges and universities. It was the first fraternity to eliminate pledging in the early 1970s, and remains a leader in the fight against hazing, alcohol abuse, drugs, and other challenges facing today’s college student.

Lambda Chi Alpha serves as a co-curricular experience to complement higher education by providing young men with opportunities for academic achievement, leadership development, and lifelong friendships.

Halcyon Lodge hosted a weekend Masonic retreat for Freemasons from across America at the West Side Masonic Temple in Cleveland, Ohio. The weekend started Friday night with several music acts to benefit WooHoo Breast Cancer research. About 500 people showed up for the event.

Over the course of the weekend there were discussions about the history of Freemasonry and Esoteric Freemasonry. Four Apprentices were entered under the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite, and three Master Masons were raised with the Emulation Ritual. Degree teams from Halcyon and Atlantis Lodge performed the work.

Halcyon will be hosting another event in June, and Sirius Lodge will have a similar event in the fall.

It’s especially awesome to see the senior brothers back at the temple helping put the final touches on the restoration. They were amazed at how much we had accomplished since 2007. I have a feeling the next Worshipful Master may be a Past Master from the 70′s. As always – Real Brotherhood always trumps Purple Aprons.

When the Grand Lodge tried to take our freedom and rights away from us in 2007 they expected us to roll over like other lodges had done. In a play on the immortal words of President Ronald Reagan “They counted on Halcyon to be passive -they counted wrong.”
