Over forty willing volunteers worked hard to transform a dilapidated flower bed by the laundrette into an allotment that will produce fruit and vegetables that anybody in Halifax College can enjoy.

The sun was out, music was playing and the welfare team provided a free BBQ ensuring that the day was enjoyed by everyone involved! “There was a great atmosphere and luckily the weather was perfect for it” said second year Physics student Johnny Tam.

There was a strong sense of community spirit as everybody worked together to prepare the ground, create a bean trellis and plant seeds and bushes. People learnt new skills and made new friendships that I’m sure will be developed as people continue to work together to maintain our success!

The garden is predominantly vegetables, but there are also herbs and strawberries, so it has something for everyone. We’re growing a variety of vegetables, from runner beans, cabbage, and onions, to pak choi and dinosaur kale! These vegetables should be ready by the end of the summer term and the throughout the autumn term.

Herbs, including parsley, thyme and oregano are able to be picked at any time and they will become more established and grow to fill their section of the garden after a while.

Anyone from Halifax is welcome to help themselves to vegetables, and everyone is encouraged to spend a few minutes weeding or watering it. If this bed is successful we can hopefully expand it to grow a wider variety of plants!

It was a really successful day and everybody involved should be very proud of what we have achieved! Halifax President George Offer said ‘Thanks to everyone who helped in Halifax, it was great to see so many people coming together to create something so positive, hopefully similar plots will be created right across campus in the near future.”

A special thank you must go to Trevor Boddison and his estate services team for pulling out the old shrubs and preparing the ground, John Cossham for his advice and compost expertise and Vanessa Cook at Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens for donating such wonderful plants.

We have recently added a “Gallery” page which allows you to view all the latest pictures from Halifax events. We will be keeping this as up to date as possible but if we do miss something then please email admin@halifaxcollege.com and we will do our best to get your photos up as soon as possible.

We have also changed the way our events system works. Now if you go to the “Events” menu above you will find a page entitled “Upcoming Events”. This page contains a Google calender which has all the Halifax Events on it.

If you would like to subscribe to this calender then there is a button in the bottom right corner of the page which when clicked will add this calender to your “york.ac.uk” email account. This enables you to view the calender on an Android or IOS device. Sorry to Blackberry users but I haven’t yet figured out how to make it compatible.
