Sunset Hill House Inn traces its history to the Grand Resort Hotels of the New Hampshire White Mountains. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, residents of Boston, New York and other East Coast cities traveled by train and horse-drawn coach to stay for the season at the old resort hotels. These resorts were referred to as "houses" despite their huge scale. There, the wealthy and influential exchanged the humidity, heat and pollution of coal-age America for the cool mountain air of New Hampshire.
Sunset Hill House in Sugar Hill, New Hampshire, was particularly well-situated as a House. Its location, high atop Sunset Hill Ridge, has been long-recognized as having the best accessible mountain views in New England. Construction of the inn began in 1880 after the railroad came to neighboring Lisbon Village (Sugar Hill Station), and by about 1910, the Sunset Hill House Grand Hotel - with its restaurants, pool and golf course - could accommodate over 350 guests, 300 staff and all the animals needed to transport and feed a small town.
When the invention of the automobile allowed urban travelers to make "day-trips," and the graduated income tax was imposed, the age of the grand resort hotels began to end. Sunset Hill House was among the last to close its doors. In the fall of 1973, due to an aging physical plant as much changes in its clientele; the main hotel welcomed the last of perhaps a million guests. The main building was torn down in 1974.
The present Sunset Hill House Inn was also built in 1880 – but as the servant’s quarters for the Grand Hotel. Around 1900, management realized that many of the servants enjoyed a better view than most of the paying guests, so the inn was converted to guest accommodations. It was touted as being quieter, while still convenient to the goings-on at the main House. Unlike the grand hotel, Sunset Hill House Inn offered its guests what was then cutting-age modernity: exotic luxuries like private bathrooms, hot and cold running water, electricity and central heat.
When the grand hotel was torn down in 1974, the present-day Sunset Hill House Inn began its modern existence as a destination country inn, boasting upscale lodging and fine dining in two restaurants, as well as a full banquet facility. Recreational activities such as golf, skiing and a pool, were also featured. Despite its popularity, it suffered from an aging infrastructure, and by 1993 was condemned and sold at public auction. However, it was completely revamped in the ensuing year and returned to its former position as a premier New England inn.
When innkeepers Lon and Nancy Henderson discovered the inn in 1999, they immediately saw in it the same things that have appealed to more than a million guests: location, location, location. The stunning White and Green Mountain views left them speechless. Combined with caring service, fine food and historical lodging, it proved an irresistible combination. They were able to purchase this historic New Hampshire inn in March 2000.

Jordan Pond is an oligotrophic tarn in Acadia National Park near the town of Bar Harbor, Maine. It covers 187 acres (76 ha), with a maximum depth of 150 feet (46 m) and a shoreline of 3.6 miles (5.8 km).

The pond was formed by the Wisconsin Ice Sheet during the last glacial period. It is flanked on the west by Penobscot Mountain and to the northeast by the two mountains known as the Bubbles. The southern end and outflow, are limited by the natural Jordan Pond moraine, which has been supplemented by a small dam.

The pond has clear water, with visibility normally 46 feet (14 m) and occasions of up to 60 feet (18 m) recorded, the deepest in Maine. It serves as the water supply for the village of Seal Harbor. It does not experience dissolved oxygen depletion in the lake depths.
Some types of boating are permitted, but humans and pets must stay out of the water. (Wikipedia)

From Sand Beach to Thunder Hole to Otter Point - 4 miles

Sand Beach, in Acadia National Park, is nestled in a small inlet between the granite mountains and rocky shores of Mount Desert Island. This gorgeous 290 yard long beach is one of the most popular points of interest on the island.
The thousands of years of pounding surf created a beach that is largely comprised of unique sand of shell fragments. The ocean temperature rarely exceeds 55 degrees in the summer and there is approximately one half cup of salt per gallon of ocean water.
Access to Sand Beach is provided via the Park Loop Road just after the park fee entrance station on the northeastern side of the island. A lifeguard is on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Changing rooms and restrooms are located next to the parking area. The Island Explorer Shuttle Bus has a pickup and drop-off point here and stops about every half hour during normal season hours.
The mountain that you will notice from the parking area is likely The Beehive. Look closely and you might see people climbing toward the summit.
There is a very nice oceanside trail, accessed from the upper parking lot, that follows the shore's edge past Thunder Hole and arrives at Otter Cliff to the south. This is well worth the trek.

Nothing symbolizes the power of Acadia National Park as much as Thunder Hole does.
When the right size wave rolls into the naturally formed inlet, a deep thunderous sound emanates. The cause is a small cavern formed low, just beneath the surface of the water. When the wave pulls back just before lunging forward, it dips the water just below the ceiling of the cavern allowing air to enter. When the wave arrives full force, it collides with the air, forcing it out, resulting in a sound like distant thunder. Water may splash into the air as high as 40 feet with a roar!

Cadilac Mountain

Cadillac Mountain, at 1,530 feet, is the tallest mountain on Mount Desert Island and the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard. From October 7 through March 6 of each year, it is the first place to view a sunrise in the United States.
Millions of years ago, the earth's tectonic and volcanic forces pushed the land upward to form the mountains on the island. Then, during ice ages that followed, huge 1 - 2 mile high and slow moving glaciers sheared off the top leaving the rounded off appearance we see today.
Largely composed of pink granite, it is covered with spruce and pitch pine forests, tiny sub alpine plants (such as cinquefoil), short gnarled trees, wild blueberries, and boulders of all sizes and shapes.

Frenchman Bay (often spelled Frenchmans Bay) is a bay in Hancock County, Maine, named for Samuel de Champlain, the French explorer who visited the area in 1604.

The bay is bounded on the east by the Schoodic Peninsula, and on the west by Mount Desert Island; parts of both are in Acadia National Park. It contains numerous islands, the largest of which is Ironbound Island. The largest town on the bay is Bar Harbor, on Mt. Desert.

The bay extends for roughly 15 miles (24 km) and spans 7 miles (11 km) at its widest.

Acadia National Park is a National Park located in the U.S. state of Maine. It reserves much of Mount Desert Island, and associated smaller islands, off the Atlantic coast. Originally created as Lafayette National Park in 1919, the first National Park East of the Mississippi, it was renamed Acadia in 1929.
The area first was inhabited by the Wabanaki people.
In the fall of 1604, Samuel de Champlain observed a high-notched island composed of seven or eight mountains rising to bare-rock summits from slopes of birch, fir, and pine. In spite of many changes over nearly 400 years, the area remains essentially the same.

The landscape architect Charles Elliot is credited with the idea for the park. It first attained federal status when President Woodrow Wilson, established it as Sieur de Monts National Monument on July 8, 1916, administered by the National Park Service. On February 26, 1919, it became a national park, with the name Lafayette National Park in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, an influential French supporter of the American Revolution. The park's name was changed to Acadia National Park on January 19, 1929.
From 1915 to 1933, the wealthy philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Jr. financed, designed, and directed the construction of a network of carriage trails throughout the park. He sponsored the landscape architect Beatrix Farrand, with the nearby family summer home Reef Point Estate, to design the planting plans for the subtle carriage roads at the Park (c.1930). The network encompassed over 50 miles (80 km) of gravel carriage trails, 17 granite bridges, and two gate lodges, almost all of which are still maintained and in use today. Cut granite stones placed along the edges of the carriage roads act as guard rails of sort and are locally known as "coping stones" to help visitors cope with the steep edges. They are also fondly called "Rockefeller's teeth".

On October 17, 1947, 10,000 acres (40 km2) of Acadia National Park were burned in a fire that began along the Crooked Road several miles west of Hulls Cove. The forest fire was one of a series of fires that consumed much of Maine's forest as a result of a dry year. The fire burned for days and was fought by the Coast Guard, Army, Navy, local residents, and National Park Service employees from around the country. Restoration of the park was supported, substantially, by the Rockefeller family, particularly John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Regrowth was mostly allowed to occur naturally and the fire has been suggested to have actually enhanced the beauty of the park, adding diversity to tree populations and depth to its scenery.
The park includes mountains, an ocean shoreline, woodlands, and lakes. In addition to Mount Desert Island, the park comprises much of the Isle au Haut, parts of Baker Island, and a portion of theSchoodic Peninsula on the mainland.
In total, Acadia National Park consists of more than 47,000 acres (73 square miles, 190 km2), including 30,300 acres (47 sq mi., 123 km2) on Mount Desert Island, 2,728 acres (4.6 sq mi., 11 km2) on Isle au Haut and 2,366 acres (3.5 sq mi., 9.2 km2) on the Schoodic Peninsula.
Cadillac Mountain, named after the French Explorer of the same name, is on the eastern side of the island. Its green, lichen-covered, pink granite summit is, because of a combination of its eastern location and height, one of the first places in the United States to see the sunrise. Miles of carriage roads were originally built by Rockefeller, Jr. The mountains of Acadia National Park offer hikers and bicycle riders views of the ocean, island lakes, and pine forests. The Penobscot River

The Penobscot Narrows Bridge is the only bridge observatory in the United States, and only one of four bridge observatories in the world.
The Penobscot Narrows Bridge opened on December 30, 2006, and the observatory opened on May 19, 2007.
The bridge spans 2,120 feet from the east shore to the west shore, and there is 135 feet between the water and the bridge’s travel surface.
The bridge cost $85 million to design and build. This bridge was planned, funded, designed, permitted and built in only 42 months.
The top of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge is 447 feet tall. The observatory is 420 feet above the river and offers 360 degree views of the surrounding area.
The design of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge incorporates a granite theme to honor the significance that granite has in the local economy.
The Washington Monument was partially built with granite from nearby Mt. Waldo, leading to the design of the two towers in the shape of the Washington Monument.
The observatory floor is tiled in granite that was cut from a quarry in Deer Isle.
