“Oh Holy Night” is my best-loved traditional Christmas song, but about 3 years ago I was introduced to the “Glorious Impossible”. It quickly rose to the top of my list of favorites.

While researching the origin of the song, I came across this info from the songwriter – Carl Cartee. This is his response to the question:

“if with God ALL things ARE POSSIBLE”, the lyrics don’t make sense .. what did I miss, please explain”.

He replied:

“Nothing is impossible with God, that’s true, but the song is intended to be a celebration of God stepping into what was impossible for us and making it glorious through his overcoming power. The verses try to set up pictures of things that seem impossible for us, the incarnation, walking on water, the resurrection and then invite us to believe beyond ourselves and look for miracles that move us to worship. Poetically using two words that don’t really go together normally, sets the listener up to have one word redeem the other...It’s a response to the truth in the verses…”

Thirty-five years ago this week, preparations were underway for a very special first date at a December 3rd Christmas banquet.

It was a wonder-filled evening long ago, as I looked into the eyes of the dimple-cheeked boy I would soon marry.

Several years later, I was in awe again when I gazed into the sweet eyes of our first born son…

This past Sunday...

That same son lead us in worship...

to the One who is called Wonderful...

What does the word wonderful mean to you?

A moment?

A person?

A reason for living?

When we think of the most wonderful times in our lives, or the most treasured people we know and love...

None of them even come close

to the awesomeness of the Lord.

No moment is as great as looking into the eyes of the 

One most wondrous

Eyes of compassion

Eyes of mercy

Eyes of love

Extending grace filled hands that show 

the scars of the true meaning 

of wonderful

As Christmas lights twinkle in the eyes of children everywhere...

and their little faces reflect amazement at the simplest of things...

He prays...

and the troublemaker

Homesick

She carried the letters close to her heart...always

Years ago, some of the letters had nearly slipped away, so now they were kept safe and guarded.

As she walked down the path chosen for her, she reread each letter...embracing oft read portions like old friends...and searching for any previously missed morsels of truth.

She lovingly fingered the map that was included with the letters...for when she had wandered and gotten lost, her Father had included directions to get home...

There was beauty along the path home...and she tried to take careful notice and cherish the wonders...she had even seen waters parted and storms stilled, but these things only made the longing stronger...

Her Father wrote about the glory and splendor of that home...and of family waiting there

He included stories of times past...and gave notice of things to come...so she would be ready...and have hope

She cried when she read the parts about the sacrifice He made...just so she could come home...and how much He loved her

But mostly

Her Father wrote of that love...

how wide, how deep, and how great His love was for her...

and promised that nothing could separate her from that love

The item listed was UNDECIDED...

Say what?

In all my years of bookkeeping, I have never seen an item listed on a receipt as UNDECIDED...

After asking the guys what UNDECIDED might have been, (the receipt was from July)...we all had a good laugh about it since no one had any idea what it was...

Laughter is good, but it is not a laughing matter if one is UNDECIDED about a relationship with Christ...

One day I will stand before God

with a receipt marked PAID IN FULL

The Perfect Gift

When It’s Not Real...

It’s Sunday morning...

Time to put on her church face...

Phony smile...fake responses

“I’m good...doing fine”...

Instead of 

“I’m broken...please pray for me”...

He’s driving home from work in rush hour traffic

Time to hide behind the mask of indifference...

Nonchalant attitude...spine of steel

Thirsting for one drop of grace...

While surrounded by a sea of mercy he can’t see...

She picks up her Bible and moves the chair back in place as the small group comes to an end...

Quick hugs and well wishes are passed around as feet travel to the door...

A choked sob is muffled behind hands tired and trembling...

Heart fragments fall to the floor as faces turn and  

hands of grace gently gather the shattered pieces...

A circle of prayer, unbroken...

except for the fearful one...

From Kmart to Niagara Falls

Remember our first anniversary?      

You rented a suite at the White Columns Inn...the one on Hwy 41 that reminded me of Gone with the Wind...

After eating at the steakhouse, we stopped in the nearby Kmart...

We bought perfume for each other...and you bought me a new book...just because you knew I loved to read...

We only had one free night and very little cash...but we had our whole lives ahead of us and were rich in love...

Years passed...

with celebrations of candlelit dinners...

trips to the Smoky Mountains...

and sometimes a night at home with the kids.

They were all special anniversaries...

Because they were spent with you.

Remember the trip to Niagara Falls?

You were so proud to be taking me somewhere special I had never been before...
and you were like a teenager in your enthusiasm to show me everything...

Did you ever realize I was happy and proud just to be with you?     

 

To be loved by you?

  

Today marks the 34th year we have been blessed 

to be husband and wife...

After years of good health and few accidents, this summer we had the opportunity to make good on another part of our wedding vows...     

in sickness and in health...

I think we passed with flying colors.

As far as the rest of the vows...

The Lord has been with us during the better...     

And carried us through the worst...

 Solomon's riches can't compare with the wealth of our love, 

so there is no fear of poverty...

Everything went great with the surgery on Friday. Karen was in and out easily, and is now recovering under the careful watch of relatives. (see previous post if you did not read that one)

She will most likely be a while in returning to the computer.
