Trick or Treat

Alas, Halloween is over. How was your Halloween? Did you gather lots of sugary sweet treats? Did you give away a ton?

The traditional princess costume was huge this year. At least in my neighborhood. Lots and lots o princesses. Mostly pink princesses, but occasionally purple ones. Rarely, but notably, a few teal princesses too. Interesting. Well, the princess costumes were popular amongst the little girls. Mostly among the girls. As for the boys, I gave Nestle crunch bars out to a disproportionately large cross-section of cowboys. There were some spidermen and a few batmen. Smatterings of other movie icons and super heroes. I believe an iron man rang my bell. But it's truly amazing how the classics make such strong showings Halloween after endless Halloween.

There were many more trick or treaters than last Halloween. With everything else being so grim, it's no wonder people want to embrace the holidays and make the most of the fun and joy they provide. Be whatever you want to be. What a brilliant holiday Halloween really is. And of course, there's the candy. Candy is always a good thing.

KISS Zombies Harry Potter Katy Perry

Who exactly is Katy Perry anyway? Wasn't she that gurl who made Elmo blush cuz she was dressed lewdly while meeting him down on Sesame Street? Why did they make Katy Perry costumes? I don't get it. It isn't cool to disrespect Elmo and his Sesame Street pals. It isn't cool at all. No sir. That sort of behavior should not be rewarded. That's the problem with our society. No one respects muppets anymore.

Zombies man. It's all about the zombies lately. It used to be about the vampires. Blood suckers and fangs. Before that it was all about the jersey shore. Totally different kinda blood suckers. Before that it was all about lady gaga. That was freaking scary. It's always about some kinda monster or another. Now it's all about your average, ordinary, run of the mill kind of zombie. How ironic. Regular zombies. How strange.

Hmmm.... final Harry Potter movie. Whoa. Major dealy-o. All those muggles are gonna wanna pretend they're witches and wizards. It happens every halloween. Damn muggles. They just don't get it. The magic comes from within. Just like the force does. Try to keep up people. We're on a schedule here. No time for slackers.

Sudoku Halloween Costume

I'm totally addicted to sudoku puzzles. I do several every night to relax and wind down after a long day. I start off doing a medium one to warm up. Then I do a hard one to really focus the brain on a single task. And if I'm up to it, sometimes I'll try a tough one. They aren't kidding about the tough part. Those can be very tricky.

I'm not the only one with a sudoku addiction. Tons of people love that game. Which is why I feel compelled to make it widely known that there is a sudoku Halloween costume. You can be a game of sudoku. It's even interactive. The Velcro numbers can be moved around the board that you wear. One of the best Halloween costumes ever!

Wario Costumes

Nintendo Mario Brothers costumes have been out for a few years now. First came Mario and Luigi. Then Princess Peach and Toad soon followed. People really really dig them. Yoshi made a brief appearance, but sadly, he has vanished.

A Bowser or a Goombah might be interesting. How about Donkey Kong? I mean, after all, that's the game that first gave us the ubiquitous Mario in the first place. Well, dream as meant to be dreamt, but not always fulfilled. At least not yet. But Nintendo did licensed a new and very cool costume for this year.

Wario. Bizarro world, sometimes evil, counterpoint to their beloved protagonist, Super Mario.

I predict great Halloween success for this villainous video game alter-ego.

New Halloween Costumes 2011

There are some costumes I never imagined I'd ever see come to fruition. Not that they shouldn't, but that the dream was too big. Or they were otherwise embroiled in legal issues. One can only dream so big. Even the hopes of men have their limits. As wide and as far as they might reach, somewhere a boundary exists. Or so I thought, until I discovered these new costumes were coming soon to a Halloween near you.

Beavis and Butt head. He. He. He. Halloween Rulz. And nachos. Nachos too.

Conan the Barbarian. Not to be confused with Conan the spurned late night talk show host.

2011 Halloween Costume Inside Scoop

I have the inside scoop on the hot new costumes coming for the 2011 season. None of them are available yet, but they will become so as halloween approaches. Many retailers will also offer them as pre-orders before the merchandise is on hand.

KISS is the really interesting one. While there have always been Kiss costumes, this is different. First they come in sizes from toddler all the way through adult. Second there are value prices and deluxe costumes. These are truly halloween costumes. Not something a die hard fan would buy for year round use. Event he deluxe ones are relatively inexpensive. I don't understand how it took this long for it to happen.

The other thing that totally blew me away was ABBA. WTF?

Does anyone actually like abba? Does anyone even know who they are?

The Beyonce line sounds like a promising addition. Especially considering how well the Lady Gaga line does.

There are more new and interesting licensed costume additions for 2011. But I have to save something to write about later.

Hottest Halloween Costumes for 2009

There have been many new additions in costumes for the year 2009. Too many really. Spongebob came back after a long hiatus. Terminator is here. Watchemn. The Strawberry Shortcake line was extended. New Transformers and Wolverine costumes. It just goes on and on. Pretty much any major label movie that was released or any popular tv show saw its stake in the halloween business increase exponentially. The question is which ones will actually be popular.

I can tell you right now Watchmen will not be popular. A nearly three hour movie full of journalistic dialogue and little action is not going to charm the masses.

Star Trek definitely will be huge. We're talking a huge block buster movie here. Ground-breaking really. This Star Trek movie single-handedly did what a long and enduring tv franchise never could. It made regular people interested in Star Trek. Now that's a feat worth that translates into mainstream success.

Terminator is iffy. Not much buzz about it anymore. I think fans of the movie are sticking with the old school.

G.I. Joe. The movie is still yet to be released. The trailers don't personally look interesting to me. I predict a huge tank on all fronts.

Transformers on the other hand should do well. The first movie was great. The new one is well liked. The characters are fun. Kids love em.

But I say the most popular of all will be Harry Potter. Mega huge smash hit the new movie. Mass appeal. Ranging from the young to the old. There's a firestorm of interest in the movie and the books. It's only natural that the costumes will reap the benefits.

At the Movies

I got your Clone Trooper right here. He's getting busy with Hannah Montana in the walk in closet. Of course they have walk in closets in outer space. Aliens are more advanced. Their walk in closets have windows and revolving doors. And are full of shiny clothes.

Maybe it's just been too long since the last time that I worn anything of than this leaden flesh. You don't conquer the world in your underwear and tattoos. You gotta have a plan. And a bowl full of chocolate. That always helps.

As I was saying to Optimus Prime the other day, Buzz Lightyear don't got nothing on Mr. Incredible. Buzz, he's nothing but a glorified doll. The closest he's ever been to outer space is under the kid's bed. Mr. Incredible on the other hand is not only incredible, but he managed to marry Mrs. Incredible and spawn a whole Incredibles family from her loins and his semen. Did they have an incredible dog? I can't remember. Maybe that was Superman who had the dog.

Halloween always gets me to thinking about these sorts of things. All the imponderables of life and love. All the distractions that fill in the gaps between birth and death. There sure are a lot of them. And the best one of all is Halloween.

Super Super Heroes

The terminators were closing in on us. We in our dungarees torn and fades. So eighties and helpless. The megatronic machines with people under their metal skins. Hungry for a new tomorrow. Fed up with all the Wolverine's and the Power Rangers. The destitute god of a great apocalypse. Heroes of a barren utopia called humanity.

If you can't trust Elvis then who can you trust. Those sideburns. That gyration. That oh so puffy hairdo. Peanut butter and pickle. Together. Of course! How could I not have seen it. I guess that's why he's the King.

Never you mind your Michael Jackson's. He sure could dance though, couldn't he. And write catchy songs. That Thriller. Now those were some fly freaking zombies. I don't know what Spiderman would do about them. His webs would be a flying. Major movie meltdown fight scene. Lotsa thumping music. And big explosions. And always. Always saves the day.

Waiting for Halloween

I was watching the Watchmen watching us. Curious how long Harry Potter's wand had gotten. Don't you think? Time flies. So do faces. And eyes. And glances. Here and there. Like little blisters on the atmosphere. Stirring quietly under a translucent layer of skin. Broiling liquid devils festering just below the vanities convinced.

There might be Star Wars. Lightsabers agog with crimson heathens. There may be Star Trek's. As hungry as the Spock and the Kirk are. We could starve in our costumes. Melt into our masks. We could wait for Halloween. Candy and Transformers on our doorsteps.

But it's always been here.

Batman Conversations

Take the salt off your eyes. Crisp costumes. On open wounds. Like the burn of fresh iodine. In healing is where the pain is. Not the cut. Nor the bite.

Batman wore a mask for this reason precisely. Even the hero winces. When his wounds are cleaned. Boy wonder he said. Take the puzzle to your room. I have so many jokers to fight. And watchmen to convene. I hate superman for having died.

But the clown on the wall still smiles. Its pasty grin. The witch in the corner with her pointed hat. While the ninja poises for battle.

I could right the wounds. Sew up the skin. But then you'd never learn. How close to skeleton every hero is.

Saving Halloween

Spock and Kirk were talking to the girls in angel costumes. We're from the future and we're here to share with you this wonderful Vulcan candy. It'll give you real wings instead of those fake ones. It'll turn cowboys into princesses and devils into good soliders.

In the past there had been Star Trek. So much brilliant fiction. In the future there had been only Star Trek costumes. But the real thing was coming back again.

The ladybugs with their baby chili peppers danced sweetly for the crowds of aliens. Terminators were everywhere, but they had Elvis to protect them.

Their costumes were more than enough to make it real. Luke had found slave leia and Yoda was cleaning his giant ears. Solo had killed Greedo. While Vader put on his cape.

The women were all butterflies and the men all were pumpkins. And they had saved another Halloween.

Apt Disguises

Chagrined watchmen repurpose their costumes. Dubious decisions of skin. Confront the illusion. Spoiling the romantic marriage of lies and love. The future thunders in her ears as the cloak comes off again. We are all in disguises. Some of us just have better ones.

The clank of metal monsters in her sleep. Constantly wakes her up. Tomorrow artfully shrugs on the makeup of our nightmares. Modest devils in their ragged costumes called men.

The gorilla in her prom gown dances with so many vampires before she notices the blood. The witch casts her spell on the pirate. He steals only for her. It's a droll charade. This night or any other. The colorful fishnet tights and the latex faces. This hollow costume that once was.

She wore her mask on every day except Halloween. She only took it off then. When everyone would think. It was the fake.

Sad she thought. How alone I am. Fervent in this sense of self. So determine to defeat the monsters that I have become one of them. That is just the way the war is waged. IN lifetimes. Or longer. In losses. Not victories. That is the color of the sword. Black. As the blood fails to find new skin.

I have worn them all. For far too long. I am not anyone. The mask is over. The costume is dead. I am no one. The wizard. The angel. The witch. The demon.

The only lie they remember as the truth tries on their faces.

A costume too close to the eve. Dark and sullen October thieves. Ride in on their broken caskets. With golden wigs over their faces. And long vampire dresses covering their eyes.

A devil was partnered with a ninja. To fight the battle for Halloween. With their candy swords and paper moustaches they waged their war on the dominion of kings with no masks at all.

These calm pirates with their ships already sailed. Took their toy guns and their plastic rats to the dungeon where they slept. To dream of beautiful princesses with pink dresses and Rapunzel's long hair. So that they might awake the next evening with a trick for their nemesis and many treats for their children.

The monster had stolen Halloween. And only they could take it back from him.

Who's Watching the Watchmen

Watchmen... Who's watching the watchmen? Hell if I know. Another huge Hollywood superhero epic for the vapid and jejune to gorge themselves greedily upon until they are too bloated to breathe their disdain.

No. Seriously. It could be good. Dark Knight was. Did anyone overdose after filming of Watchmen was completed? Did any actor take their role so seriously that it spilled over into their actual life? Did anyone do that weird tongue thing in between villainous pontifications?

It was a good comic from what I've read, though I've never actually read it. Wikipedia. The perfectly half-assed way to become an expert on just about any subject.

Watchmen showcases a dark and dystopian future where heroes are met with extreme revulsion. Why in any kind of society would heroes be scorned? I'm not sure. But apparently this movie is supposed to explain it. Picking up right where NBC's heroes has failed us a nation.

The big blue guy freaks me out. He looks like some kinda Aqua-God. He could destroy us all. With one whisper to his fishy disciples.

Halloween is a long way off from the release of this mammoth cinematic fart. But like the the stench, the the momentum is sure to linger.

The Darkest Knight of Them All

I finally saw Batman: The Dark Knight. Yay for me. Very exciting. The two and a half hours flew by. Heath Ledger as the Joker was indeed impressive. Sadly really, that he can't do it in the sequel.

Batman's deeps fake voice was annoying. Morgan Freeman was as always, Morgan Freeman. And of course, saving the day conveniently setup the next time the day would require saving.

It seemed like a lot of scenes were cut. Not just cut, but overtly missing. It was a really good, face paced movie. It was just a little jumbled. Like the director wanted a three-hour movie and was convinced to strip it down to two and half. I managed to fill in the missing links as I'm sure most folk did. But still was left with the feeling that I had blinked much too often.

A fabulous follow up to Batman Begins. Although I have to say I still prefer that clarity and cerebral nuances of it a little bit more.

As for dressing up the kids as spooky, overdoes guy, Joker. I emphatically vote yes. It's so morbidly tacky that it's downright American.

Subtle

The Strangers was stupid and boring. Not good at all. Nice masks. But that's it.

Now if you really want to see a scary french movie try Irreversible. That shit is gruesome. A head turned to jello via fire extinguisher is gore enough to rival any American movie. On top of that it actually has content. Plot and characters. All that extraneous stuff American movies tend to leave out.

The french are masters of combing vileness and seduction. Baise Moi is one of my favorite movies. Empowered women. Graphic sex. And relentless violence. There's nothing left to want. Understandably most french movies don't have costumes to coincide. Bloody anuses don't good costume make.

Which is surprising. Considering how much Americans enjoy being fucked up the ass.

Debating the Dead

Halloween is fast approaching and I think gee, didn't that just happen. No. that was last year. Hmmm... short term memory loss. A sure sign of pop culture overload.

All these years I've been working on halloween sites. Adding, editting, otherwise modifying an endless continuum of useless move and tv drivel american wish to mimic I can't help but think we're doomed as a society.

Why? Why pretend to be the antihero when you are anything but. Why portray yourself as a downtrodden cartoon character you never really liked that much.

It's strange how time seems happen. It little burst of cognition. Bridges of skin unreavelling like candy wrappers. The sweeet poison of sugar flowing rapidly into the diaries of empty skeletons.

Scales of hamlet. Measure of Juliet. Shakespeare up our asses. As we fasten the hooks on that stage. The heroes in question fumbling with their dried up pens.

And soiled capes.

Is Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) Too Old?

The whole Indiana Jones revival thing is just bizarre to me. Harrison Ford is, what, 80 years old now? And he's still outrunning giant stone boulders and bounding over fifty thousand foot waterfalls in a tiny life raft. Kinda hard to believe.

On the other hand, there's a whole generation of young folks who never got to experience the original Indiana Jones movies first hand. In their prime. I guess they deserve that much. Coulda been with a more fitting actor in his place though. Just saying. Brad Pitt woulda done nicely. Or even George Clooney if he needed to be more mature. That's pronounced Ma - Tour for those not in the know. Sounds way classier.

Would any young person of today actually know enough of Indiana to want to be the halloween costume? I couldn't say. I suppose after having seen the movie maybe. They seem pretty popular. I don't know if it's cuz of the parents or the children. Or some combo variable of the two.

Joker's way bigger. High School Musical too. But Indiana is making a respectable showing.

Mutt is a cool name anyway. If nothing else.

Joker Costumes or Death: The Best Marketting There Is

The one good thing about dying is that people really like you afterward. I mean they really freaking like you. Magically, once you're dead, all the bad stuff you did while you were alive vanishes. Any talent you had is multiplied exponentially. Once you die, you're finally, really and for true, the greatest thing that ever lived. At least until the world forgets you.

I'm referring of course, to Heath Ledger and his role as The Joker in the new Batman the Dark Knight movie. Actually, from what I've seen so far, he really was brilliant. I'm not trying to rag on the guy. It's more the people who suddenly are interested in someone only after they're dead that I'm picking on.

The Joker costumes are quite hot. It's a bit bizarre, no? What's the logic in that thought process? Hmmm, cool movie... Wow! That's the dead guy. Oh there's his costume. Scary movie psycho villain. Dead Overdose guy.

While most Halloween costumes only provide a moderate simulation of the character you strive to become, once in a while something magical happens. A perfect convegence of bad cartoon animation and cheap costume production. A rift in the space time contiuum. And a full moon all happen at the exact same moment. Thus the world is given what I refer to as a perfect halloween costume.

A costume that so perfectly and accurately makes the wearer look like their target character that it is illegal in 20 of the lower 48 united states as well as mexico.

Sockless, Pink Shirted Studs from the 80's

If you were alive in the 80's chances are you remember Miami Vice. You probably remember it more for Don Johnson's (Sonny Crockett's) ever-present stubble and mysteriously sockless ankles rather than for the wickedly stimulating plotlines. And who can forget the oh so pink shirt. Only a real man can pull off a pink shirt with a white blazer. That's what made Miami Vice so popular back in the day. Sonny Crockett was metrosexual long before anyone even knew what metrosexual was. It was a show light years ahead of its time.

Shrek was a pretty good movie. Well, the first one anyway. Eddie Murphy as Donkey was great. Who, I ask you, who didn't love Donkey? No one. That's who. What's not to love?

Cartoon characters have been standard Halloween costume issue for many, many years. They usually make great costumes for adults and children alike. Spongebob. Fred Flintstone. Whatever. There ain't nothin' wrong with a good ole cartoon character Halloween costume come tricks or treats.

Not usually anyway.

Unless it makes your child look like this.

Well, it's a good way to ensure your spawn get to eat none of their Halloween candy. They'll never make it back with a single snack sized bar. They may not make it back at all.

You may as well send him or her out as a sign that reads kick my ass and steal my candy. Either way, It'll have the same effect.

Halloween Costumes You're Better Off Not Being

One thing I love, and I don't know why are toddler ninja costumes. Maybe it's the asian heritage. Maybe it's the realism of the hero figure surrealistically overlayed on such a tiny person. I don't know why. They're just cute. And I don't even like kids.

Have you seen? Heard? Knight Rider is back on the airwaves. Thankfully, minus David Hasselhoff. Yuck! I can't think of a more unappealing specimen of male celebrity. Ok. Maybe Hillary Clinton, but technically she's not male. Technically. Very technically.

Tge costumes have been available for a while, but not terribly popular. I mean, who wants to be the guy whose car was smarter than him?
