Costume Report 2013

Hi everyone!

I hope all of you had a wonderful Halloween! I can't believe it's come and gone and Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away. It seems like last Thanksgiving was just yesterday. This year has gone by so fast, too fast really, I think time needs to slow down a little! :)

I had four people give me a costume report from their Halloween celebrations, which I will share with you now!

Here is my friend, Morgan's, report from Alaska: saw a lot of Batmans, one was a retro Batman! My son was Batman and even some of the girls were dressed as Batman. I saw a man dressed as Mario from Mario Bros. and saw two people in white with a white unicorn head on. A few girls were dressed as Link from Legend of Zelda. There was also a Men In Black agent. There were only a few zombies. I also saw a family where the dad was Winnie the Pooh, the mom was Tigger, one kid Eeyore, and the baby was Piglet! I also saw a lot of cats.

Here is my friend, Roxy's, report from Kansas: we had 4 princesses, 1 grim reaper, 1 werewolf, a retro batman, a ninja turtle, a power ranger, a ninja, 2 fairies, Cleopatra, Iron Man, a couple of zombies, Spiderman, kitty cats, and a skeleton.

Here is my friend, Susan's, report from Missouri: I saw a couple of kids with a Monsters University theme. My neighbor kids were minions, handmade minions at that! Super cute! I had a ninja and a Skylander character. My friend's daughter was Princess Leia, I was a nurse, and my friend was a cat.

Thanks for your report, Susan! I have a friend whose daughter went as a handmade minion as well, very cute!

For our last report here is my co-owner, Chas, from Massachusetts: a purple dragon, chick, ninja, mobster, several princesses, super girl, geisha girl, police officer, several bugs, butterflies, a few witches, pirate, Delmo (anime character), mouse, 2 Miss America girls, a girl was dressed as a doctor, and another girl was dressed as Rapunzel (she was doing fine until her wig blew off), and a baseball player who was having issues with his mustache.

Thanks for your report, Chas! It seems that ninjas, Batman, and princesses were a big theme this year! Thank you to those who sent in their reports, I really appreciate it! I hope to do this again next year to see if the trends change at all.

DIY Vintage Halloween Table Runner

Hello everyone!

Halloween is only three days away...how did that happen?? September and October flew by without much time to plan anything it seemed. This year I wanted to create some handmade decorations for Halloween. It's very easy to find ideas and patterns if you just do a google search! I decided I wanted to share with all of you a couple of the handmade decorations I made this year with my mom, complete with DIY (do-it-yourself) instructions! I hate when I find a project I would love to make, but the author hasn't provided detailed instructions! If you click on the photos you can view them in a larger size. :)

The project I am sharing with you today is a Vintage Halloween Table Runner! My mom found a couple pieces of remnants at Joann's and came up with the idea to make the table runner. I absolutely LOVE the vintage Halloween fabric! Here are a list of the supplies you will need:

~Two pieces of fabric in whatever length/width you desire (one for the top and one for the bottom)
~Four tassels for each corner (the ones my mom purchased came two to a package)
~Trim or lace that is long enough to be sewn around the entire project
~Sewing machine
~Iron
~Scissors
~Thread
~Pins (you will use these to pin all the components of the project into place)
~Needle

Step 1: Wash your fabric! You don't know what all your fabric has touched, plus washing it makes it a little softer.

Step 2: After your fabric is washed and dried be sure to iron it. This will get out any creases or wrinkles that have formed in the fabric.

Step 3: Cut your contrasting fabrics so that they match in size. For example, our vintage Halloween fabric was bigger than our orange fabric, so we cut the vintage fabric down to make it the same size as the orange fabric.

Step 4: Pin the trim (with the decorative side facing in) onto the right side of one panel of fabric.

Step 5: Pin the tassels to the corners of your fabric.

Step 6: Thread your sewing machine with black thread (or whatever color thread you want to use).

Step 7: Sew the trim close to the edge of the fabric taking the pins out as you go.

Step 8: Pin the contrasting fabric to the first piece of fabric with the right sides together.

Step 9: Sew the pieces together leaving one short end open for turning right side out. Tip #1: When you get to the open end, sew about 2 inches in on each side (this reinforces the stitching) leaving an opening large enough for your hand to turn fabric right side out. Tip #2: When sewing the two pieces together, sew over the stitching of the first piece of fabric...this provides a guide so the stitching isn't off.

Step 10: Trim the seam and corners if needed.

Step 11: Turn your fabric right side out.

Step 12: Iron your project so the trim, seam, and corners are lying flat.

Step 13: Either hand or machine sew the open end shut.

There you have it! You now have a custom made table runner for Halloween! This is how ours turned out:

This was a quick, easy, and fun project to make! 2013 Pumpkin Carving Contest!

Hi everyone!

We are so excited to have reached 800 likes since the summer! You guys are awesome! I wonder if we can make it to 1,000 likes by Halloween?

In order to thank you for following us, commenting, sharing our posts, etc... we have decided to run a pumpkin carving contest this year for Halloween! All you need to do is submit ONE photo per person to the email address I will provide. I will create a photo album on our Facebook page specifically for the contest. I will then upload the photos to the album. Instead of judging the photos ourselves, we will let the users of Facebook determine the winners! Anyone will be able to like the photos and whoever gets the most likes will win! This means you will need to share, share, share your photo once I have it uploaded! Fright Night Friday Movie Review: Ghost Lake

We're back! Hello everyone! Sorry to be so quiet for so long. This year has been an interesting one..lots of good and lots of bad. I figured it was about time I post a new movie review, so here goes! This is an old review that my co-owner, Chas, wrote back in 2006! If you're a member of our Yahoo group, you can view the original post here! Enjoy!

Ghost Lake (2004)

Movie Plot:

Don't go in the water! Crippled by guilt and grief after the death of

her parents, Rebecca (Tatum Adair) retreats to her family's lakeside

summer house. But her fragile state of mind is further disturbed by

nightmarish visions in which the dead are arising from the waters --

and feeding on the living. Has she lost her hold on reality, or are

zombies really sating their gruesome appetites with human flesh?

What sounded like a good story plot became very silly. It has some

predictable things in the movie like the bodies rising up from the

tables they were lying on. The make up was bad. You could almost see

the rubber hoses as the water came gushing out of the zombies'

mouths. If you are looking for a scary movie this movie lacks any

form of fright. However, if you are interested in a silly horror

movie, the kind that you watch for a laugh, you might enjoy it.

I will give this movie 2 skulls.

Top 10 Hero/Villain Costumes of 2013

Good evening everyone!

I hope this post finds you gearing up for the Halloween season! We made it to the halfway mark...FINALLY! To celebrate we have a guest post tonight from our friend, Marie, who will be describing the top 10 hero/villain costumes for this year! I would like to thank Marie for her article and I encourage our readers to leave comments either here or on our Facebook page letting us know what you think! With that being said, here's Marie!

Top 10 Hero/Villain Costumes of 2013

This year is sure to be an exciting one for fans of some our most classic superheroes and villains. Whether you are looking at costumes for Halloween or just looking to dress up on premiere nights, 2013 will have plenty of characters that will be popular and fresh in our minds from now until October. Here are ten character costumes that are sure to be on display this Halloween and a few that may be spotted at your local theater over the next few months.

1. Katniss: The “Hunger Games” heroine returns this fall in “Catching Fire”, the second movie in the ever-popular trilogy. The newer movie has her doing most of her action in a wetsuit which is simple enough to get a hold of. The bow and arrows probably won’t be too welcome is you’re attending the premiere but are essential props for Halloween. If you prefer the classic gear of her in her “Game” issued jacket, pants and boots that would probably work better if you’re dressing up for premiere night. If you want you can get creative with the bow on Halloween by building them out of household objects like a small bungee cord and hula hoop cut in half. Duct tape on the ends of plastic arrows works really well if you’re trying to get someone’s attention.

2. Iron Man: Tony Stark is back for the final chapter in the “Iron Man” trilogy. There are so many ways you can sport this outfit that you really only need to worry about the proper mask. The red, white, and blue outfit will probably be more popular this year as this one is featured in the newest movie but the classic red and gold is always a fun option. A fun thing to do is buy the costume and then put strapped headlights around your hands to imitate his energy blasts.

3. Viper: An X-Men villain set to appear later in “The Wolverine”, Viper is a cool choice for the ladies this Halloween. Green is the only essential element for this costume so feel free to put in the hair, on the lips, and even some eye shadow. Spandex and leather are ideal for the adult women but the younger crowd can also enjoy sporting this outfit with a pair of green athletic sweats and a tank top with arm warmers.

4. Thor: The Asgardian Prince will also be out again this year as well as his featured sequel “Thor: The Dark World”. The bleach blonde hair is really the only thing you’ll need to get on your own as this costume is available whole just about anywhere. Those who want to get creative with the hammer can wrap it with rubber bands or bungee cords to your hand so that you can chuck it and have it return to you instantly.

5. Black Widow: The popular “Avengers” heroine will make appearances in both “Iron Man 3” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” this year. The athletic S.H.I.E.L.D. assassin is always a fun choice for the superhero loving ladies. Plastic pistol holsters and red hair are the main essential additives to this all black attired costume but many places probably have the prop weapons with the costume.

6. Loki: Thor’s brother and on and off nemesis is a good pairing for someone who has a brother going as Thor or is part of a group dressing up as the Avengers. Sleeked black hair, long or short, works for this villain and usually has the helmet and scepter to go with the costume but can always be modified to your liking.

7. Falcon: The first African-American superhero of mainstream comics will definitely be sported this year as this character is featured in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” later this year. The red and white costume and nature of the character lends itself well to sporting an old pair of red sneakers. An awesome idea would be to bust out some vintage red “Air Jordans”.

8. Bucky/Winter Soldier: Captain America’s old pal Bucky returns later this year in his own upgraded gear as a brainwashed assassin. Black combat boots might be needed to go with this costume and you can always use your own choice of prop gun like a nerf or water gun. This is another good option for someone looking to dress with an Avengers or Marvel group of friends.

9. “300” Soldiers: The Spartans return later this year to take on Xerxes in the battle at Sea around the same time of King Leonidas’ battle at Thermopylae. Guys and girls can both enthusiastically sport the classic Greek attire if not the Spartan warrior gear this Halloween. These costumes generally are more appropriate for adults so if you’re going to dress up for the premiere it’s better to go with the white Greek robes and save the capes, spears, and speedos for the private Halloween party.

10. Superman: Honestly, who isn’t excited for the revamped “Man of Steel” franchise? Clark Kent will be everywhere this October and this summer when Superman returns to movie theaters. This is one of the most classic costumes that will once again be trending this year so feel free to add customizations to make your costume unique. Go all out and wear the professional Clark Kent clothes over the classic costume to the Halloween party and rock the superhero suit when you get inside.

Fright Night Friday Movie Review: Hotel Transylvania

Good evening readers!

TGIF! Hope you all are doing well and enjoying your day! We have a new movie review for you tonight! This one comes from our friend, Melissa, over at Gothic Charms!

Hotel Transylvania (2012)

What a great animated movie! I want this hotel! LOL Fantastic family movie. I love how the monsters are portrayed - like most humans, they all have their foibles, their annoyances and things they're great at. All parents want to protect their children, but there comes a time when the parents have to learn to let go. It's a difficult time for adults and kids alike - especially when you're 118 years old! It's time to stretch those wings, put some sparkle on those fangs and see new places - but what are you leaving behind at the same time?

This movie was a lot more fun than I expected it to be. There are a few touching scenes of parent/teen angst, some fantasticly funny moments and lots of monster magic. Frankenstein doing the high dive into the pool - hilarious! Werewolf puppies EVERYWHERE! (Girl power! woohoo!) Shower scenes with skeletons - laugh out loud funny!

This is a must see and must buy movie! You'll watch it over and over again!

I give this movie a rockin' FIVE SKULLS!

Awesome review, thanks Melissa! I definitely agree with this, I saw the movie in the theater with my husband...HE even loved it! He bought it for me for Christmas. New changes to the blog!

Hello everyone!

I hope February has been treating all of you well! We here at Halloween Night headquarters got hit by Winter Storm Q which resulted in a couple of snow days (darn, what a shame hehe) and plenty of snow! We are now waiting on our next snow storm which is supposed to hit tonight and last through Monday night! We haven't seen this kind of winter weather for about two years and the moisture is very welcome here due to the drought.

We are making some changes to the blog that will help it be more presentable. I have been working on making a special page just for our favorite links! All the links that have been on our blog's homepage will be moved there. Once that is done, there will be a links tab at the top of the page.

We have created a page for our Halloween Extravaganza project. Here is the link: http://halloween-nights.blogspot.com/p/halloween-extravaganza.html If you ever want to go back and watch the videos, there is a "Halloween Extravaganza" tab at the top of the blog's homepage. :)

We have also added a chatroom! It appears in the right hand side column of the homepage. There are several ways you can log in to chat. You can log in with your Facebook account, Twitter, as a guest (you can sign in with whatever name you choose), or you can sign up for an account with Chatroll which is the website we are using for the chat. We thought this would be a fun way to connect with our readers and it gives us the possibility to hold special chat events in the future. We will be monitoring the chatroom everyday and if we find it being abused, you will be banned. So, feel free to check it out!

The Following 1/21: "Pilot"

Hi everyone!

I have started watching a new show called "The Following". The first episode aired last Monday. I had wanted to write a weekly recap of this show just like I did a few years ago with the tv show "Jericho", but The Following is so fast paced and contains so much information in each episode, I'm not sure if I will be able to do that. I would like to try and at least write a weekly "what I thought" post about that week's episode. So, bear with me, I haven't done this in awhile!

Basically this show revolves around a serial killer who has created a following and the former FBI agent who is trying to stop him. Kevin Bacon plays Ryan Hardy, a damaged former FBI agent and James Purefoy plays Joe Carroll, a literary professor obsessed with Edgar Allan Poe and also the serial killer. A few years before, Ryan caught Joe and put him in prison....now Joe has other plans. He has managed to create a following of "friends" who are willing to do anything and everything that Joe tells them to do.

In this first episode, Joe was able to escape prison thanks to a prison guard who is part of Joe's "following". The FBI director calls Ryan Hardy and asks him to meet with the agents who are on the case in order to give them insight into Joe the serial killer. What gets me is Ryan is treated like a pariah when he meets up with the other agents and they don't LISTEN to him! Considering Ryan is the one who caught Joe in the first place, you'd think they would at least give him some credit.

Ryan is a damaged man. He was stabbed in the heart by Joe and now has to use a pacemaker. When Ryan gets stressed or exerts too much energy, he becomes weak. I loved how during this entire episode, you could hear a heart beating in the background. I've always liked Kevin Bacon and I think he's a great fit for this role...he's very believable and even though he's broken, he's a determined man.

James Purefoy is pure gold in his role as Joe Carroll. Joe is charming and charismatic and also psychotically evil! He has a brilliant mind and is obsessed with Edgar Allan Poe as well as the other authors of the gothic period. Joe, being inspired by these stories, murders his victims in symbolic ways. I am a fairly new fan of James Purefoy...I discovered him in the movie Ironclad (which is a great movie by the way, I highly recommend it) and really liked his acting. He does a great job portraying Joe Carroll..it's chilling!

I really enjoyed the first episode. It was fast paced, packed full of information, and we met most of the recurring characters such as:

Joe's ex-wife who formed a relationship with Ryan
The team of FBI agents (I don't trust all of them)
Joe's son
A few members of Joe's following

I've been following (teehee!) the Facebook page for this show and I have to agree with many of my fellow fans in saying the FBI agent with the mole is very annoying. She's very short with Ryan and doesn't seem to have much compassion for others (I'm thinking maybe she's part of Joe's following). I know there always has to be conflict somewhere in a tv show, so I guess we just have to grin and bear it!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!! Can you believe it's finally here?! I hope everyone has had a wonderful time tonight. Tonight the veil between our world and the otherworld is at its thinnest. If you have heard a strange sound that cannot be explained or saw a shadow when no one was around.....it could very possibly be someone trying to communicate with you!

Don't forget to send me your list of costumes you saw tonight! I will add all of the submissions together and see just how close I came to predicting the costumes this year. Also, we will be able to see what kinds of costumes were popular in different parts of the country and the world!

We have had so much fun counting down the days til Halloween and have really enjoyed putting together our Halloween Extravaganza and sharing the videos with you. While we know it was long in length, we sure hope that we taught you something new. This was a story we really wanted to tell, in order to honor the victims of the Salem Witch Trials. While researching and working on the project, we experienced several mishaps and strange occurrences. One such incident was when Chas was reading about the witches. The light kept flickering on and off on his 3-way lamp and at one point, it went out completely. He checked the bulb and the chord and found there was nothing wrong with them. Was this due to the events in Salem? Was someone trying to prevent us from sharing our information? We will never know, but we can't help but feel there were some spooky forces at work!

Halloween Extravaganza: Chas's Pictorial Tour of Salem

It's the night before Halloween, are you excited? We sure are! Chas will hopefully be handing out candy to the trick-or-treaters (weather permitting) and as for me, I'll be watching It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and wishing I was at a party or something. LOL! Don't forget to keep a list of all the costumes you see! I would like to do a follow up post to my costume prediction list!

Halloween Extravaganza: Haunted Places in Salem

Another Friday is here yay!! Once again I've been having internet problems. Basically, our local phone company who we have our internet through, decided to put in fiber optic lines. We weren't supposed to experience any problems, but of course they were wrong. It seems as if each week, we have some kind of problem with either the internet or the phone lines being down. Ugh!

So, tonight we have three episodes from our Halloween Extravaganza. These episodes are about haunted places in Salem. You will find out why these places are haunted and who is haunting them! You may want to leave the lights on! ;)

Halloween Extravaganza: The Bloody Curse of Sarah Good

Hello everyone!

Are you scared yet? While a ghost story can be scary, what makes it even more scary is when the story is based on a real person. I think that is what makes the stories surrounding the victims of Salem so eerie.

Happy Monday, or maybe not so happy. Mondays are never that good of a day are they? Well, to make it a bit more bearable, we have a new video in our Halloween Extravaganza! The 2012 Halloween costume prediction list from Halloween Night!

Greetings my fellow ghouls!

Welcome to the 6th annual Halloween Night costume predictions list! I started this annual event in my Yahoo! group "Halloween Night" and have had so much fun writing them! I make my own predictions on what I think will be *in* this year as far as costumes are concerned. I will list my top ten choices with #1 being the top costume. With that said, let's start the list!

10. I will always save a special place for the classic costumes. Witches, ghosts, skeletons, etc... these costumes have been around for centuries and never get old! They are easy to make at the last minute and the little ones always look so cute dressed in them! I guarantee that you will see at least one trick-or-treater decked out in a classic costume this year!

9. I think homemade costumes will be big this year due to the economy. Store bought costumes have become pretty pricey over the past few years and a lot of people just can't afford them. Thanks to the birth of Pinterest (follow Halloween Night on Pinterest HERE) and several DIY websites, you can find a very easy to make Halloween costume for cheap!

8. Zombies will definitely be making a comeback this year. Zombies have seemed to become part of our culture with zombie walks, tv shows, video games, etc.... Just be sure to be armed with candy and you'll make it through Halloween in one piece! ;)

7. Monster High! The Monster High dolls have become a highly collectible fad among youngsters. Thanks to Halloween novelty stores such as Spirit Halloween, kids can now dress as their favorite Monster High character!

6. Who wants to visit Sesame Street? No need, because Big Bird will most likely make an appearance at your Halloween shindig! Thanks to the presidential debates, Big Bird has become a hot commodity costume with some stores actually selling out!

5. The Avengers hit the big screen this year and will hit your doorsteps this Halloween! Think of all the possibilities: Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, etc... Super heroes are always a kid favorite, so I think you can expect to see at least one of these characters this year!

4. Gangnam Style! Psy, the Korean rapper, has because a huge name in the past few months with his hit song "Gangnam Style"! It's a really catchy tune and the music video is great! If you attend a big Halloween party, I'm sure you'll see at least one person dressed as Psy!

3. Vampires will definitely be hanging around again this year. They are still huge in our popular culture with the tv shows True Blood and Vampire Diaries as well as the last movie installment of the Twilight saga. I love when little kids dress as vampires!

2. Angry Birds to the rescue! This action packed game has become a massive hit worldwide! Everyone I know seems to have played Angry Birds. I'm a fan myself, having three different versions of the game on my smartphone! There are costumes for kids as well as adults...they are cute!

1. The number one costume for this year is....Batman! The third movie in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy starring Christian Bale hit the movie theaters earlier this year. These movies are the best Batman movies I've ever seen. Kids love dressing up as Batman and I think there will be a lot of them this year! Of course, we will never forget the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado during the premiere of the latest Batman movie.

It has been a stormy weekend here at Halloween Night headquarters...perfect weather for doing Halloween activities! Speaking of, we promised to do a giveaway in October if we reached 200 likes on our Facebook page. We are now well on our way to 300 likes! So, as promised here are the details for the giveaway!

The prizes include: a set of Halloween coasters, a magnetic notepad, a Charlie Brown sticky notepad, a glow-in-the-dark ghost containing Skittles candies (this is awesome, I have one!), and two owls which were handmade by me (I sell them on my craft page Peridot Moon Creations). I wanted to include more items, but had to watch my budget. Maybe next year I will have a bigger prize package. ;)

Pumpkins & Salem Witchcraft: Part 2

Good evening!

Did you attend any haunts over the weekend? I'm hoping to visit the local pumpkin patch soon to take part in their festivities!

I did manage to get two pumpkins last week. Check them out! $4 for each!

These pumpkins are huge! Not sure how much they weigh. They are the perfect size and shape for carving and I can't wait until I'm able to carve them! I'll carve them the weekend before Halloween. By then I may have acquired more pumpkins!
